First time here on November 26th and we're impressed. Growing up in Vancouver we would go to Chinatown every weekend to go the "club" and shop with my parents in the 70's. I've missed the places of old since none of the restaurants survived. The restaurant brings back fond memories of family and simpler times and even more so with the retro feel.
The food is amazing. My dad being an old timer in Chinatown has seen the neighbourhood choices decline over the years. Two years ago Daisy Garden suffered a fire and never recovered. He was so excited to find out some of the staff are here now. He remembers the soy sauce chicken and much to his delight, he had it today. The BBQ is on point, some familiar staff, and great service.
Great job by all involved. We'll make sure to make the journey from Surrey often.
The only thing missing was the sound of mahjong tiles being mixed from the rooms above.

A beautifully designed new restaurant in Chinatown allowing you to experience authentic dishes in an authentic decor. Please support local - and enjoy their great food. My favorite dishes are the BBQ duck of course, the curry and the gai lan in chili - all three were pure perfection!!! A new favorite for sure!! ***one of the rare places in the area that has a table big enough for 12 people to sit around for a team meal.
Keep it simple but do it well.
Great food, amazing staff.
You have to eat here.
Definitely a man’s kind of restaurant- pork, chicken, duck and rice. Friendly, clean and helpful!! Wanted noodles, etc but first time in Chinatown, it was overwhelming. Very tasty, would go again!
Thank you for bringing back old memories of when I was growing up (and that was a long time ago!). Congratulations on the opening and best wishes.
Fantastic BBQ pork. Curry chicken was spicy and delicious. Terrific find on our trip. Clean, retro deco. Friendly servers. Loved the tea they served. Wish we knew the brand and type. Would love to make it at home.
This is awesome bbq, duck, pork and lup Chong was killah!
Good food. Very friendly and professional services. Definitely will visit again.
The dynamic Carol Lee is at it again with her new restaurant ChinatownBBQ. Arising from the ashes of the nearby Daisy Garden Restaurant, ChinatownBBQ brings a wonderful value proposition to Vancouver diners. The restaurant exudes a warm welcome, with its spartan but comfortable setting, and delivers remarkable value with its high-quality food and reasonable prices. And, this restaurant makes it easy to share dishes with dinner companions!
Excellent restaurants have great people and this one is no exception. After the Daisy Garden Restaurant burnt down a few doors away, Carol Lee skillfully recruited a few key chefs and support staff from the Daisy to power ChinaBBQ's start-up. It didn't take long for us to figure out that this, indeed, is a recipe for success.
We began our meal with an intriguing tea that was full of subtle, pleasant, and refreshing flavours. Our teacups were always full, and ready to effortlessly accompany the wide variety of dishes that followed.
The feast began with a light, tasty, meat and vegetable broth that subtly prepared our taste buds for the satisfying dishes to follow. Our table of six quickly powered its way through the dishes that followed. The highlight dishes were the roast chicken and barbecued duck. These poultry dishes were extremely moist with delicious crispy skin. They were magically cut and beautifully presented. We also enjoyed the rack of crispy pork with its tender, sweet, crispy skin and the curried beef dish. The curried beef featured a full-flavoured, braised beef.
The main dishes were accompanied by fresh, green, sauteed vegetables that were wonderfully matched with light sauces. If you are feeling adventurous, try the braised lettuce. Covered in a light dressing, this side dish was innovative and refreshing.
Service was amazing and very responsive. Overall, ChinatownBBQ delivered great tastes and value.
A step in the right direction for Chinatown! Modernize, clean up, take credit/debit cards but keep dishes authentic and the old Chinatown feel. Hope other restaurant owners follow suit.
A few weeks ago I walked by this Chinese BBQ joint and was intrigued by the decor. I did some quick research online into the management/background and just gotta try it out!
So today, with some lovely sunshine, I took my fam to try out the food!! Upon entry, we were warmly greeted. The restaurant decor took us back to the 50s but bright & clean! Menu was full of pleasant surprises as the prices were reasonable and the food choices were great!
Out came a plate of Roast Pork & BBQ Duck on rice + curry beef brisket on rice. Super yummy!!! The spicy level of the curry was just right and I wish they had put in some coconut milk to enhance the aroma.
The duck was really tasty and juicy... and the roast pork.. wow! the skin was real crispy and not too salty....
Besides the great food and reasonable prices, we were all wow'd by the warm service by the servers and manager. I personally have NEVER experienced authentic Chinese/HK food with Canadian service!!!
This is a great gem in Chinatown. You really don't get to enjoy some nice Chinese food w/ great service other than this joint... hope there'll be more places like this in the area as most new places are more hipster coffee shops!
Friend of mine took me here for a mutual Chinese BBQ craving as we were both hankering for the stuff horribly haha. So off we went! My boy T is a regular at this joint & he recommended the "Four Treasures" combo set as it had all the go-tos (BBQ pork/duck, roast pork and quail egg on rice). The BBQ meat was solid but the true stand-out was the roast pork which was 🔥🔥🔥 Super moist, chewy and flavourful with nice crispy skin. Amazing! I ordered the duck wings on a whim and found them pretty underwhelming. Luckily for me the ASM Bobby came to our rescue with extra pork and rice! 😊😊 Made sure we were both taken care of fully and was always attentive. Easily the best service I've ever gotten in an Asian restaurant bar none! I don't give perfect ratings out very often but Chinatown BBQ has certainly earned it! Check em right next to New Town Bakery in Chinatown.
The moment we walked in the door we knew this place was a winner. The heady aroma of anise and clove, crispy skinned ducks hanging over succulent pork and a guy with a cleaver. It's basic, bbq meat served over rice with some greens smoothed in oyster sauce. Kind of like the menu at In-n-Out burger. Stuart and I shared the duck and bbq pork platter. The duck was too die for. The pork was sweeter than we were used to but still tasty. All up $20 for dinner for two. Will we be back? You betcha!
24 hr update: No migraine 💜💜💜💜
Went here on a Friday evening. There weren't many people. We got a plate with three meats- soy chicken, duck and Roasted pork. They came on top of rice. All the three meats were well cooked and very flavorful. The soy chicken came with a gingery sauce which was our favorite. The Roasted pork skin was so crispy. Duck was our least favorite of the three as it didn't have a lot of meat but it was still good and flavor full, you could taste the orange in the duck. Overall good chinease BBQ experience.
Would have been nicer if the foods came out hot, but it seems like they dont make it to order. :)
My coworkers and I came here to have lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was extremely difficult to find a parking spot on the streets. We drove around and around and finally we gave up looking for street parking. We parked at a pay parking lot on Keefer Street and walked to the restaurant.
The restaurant was full of people and some customers were waiting at the entrance. We were lucky to have a table right away.
We ordered food right away because we spent time to look for parking already. We had to go back to work within an hour. We ordered a dish of gai lan with soy sauce and garlic, curry beef brisket with rice, bbq duck and bbq pork with rice and roasted pork and soy sauce chicken with rice. We all shared these dishes, so we could try different types of food together. Usually people ordered their own dishes.
The gai lan with garlic and soy sauce tasted great! The veggies were fresh. The chef cooked the veggies with oil, garlic and soy sauce. The dish of curry beef brisket with rice was extraordinary. The curry sauce was a little bit spicy to add extra flavour to the dish. It definitely went well with the rice. The other two dishes were also rice but we could try all four types of meat: BBQ duck, BBQ pork, roasted pork and soy sauce chicken. All of them tasted great especially the skin of the roasted pork was very crispy!!
Due to the crowd at the restaurant, the customer service was just average. The servers were so busy that we wanted to get extra spoons and chopsticks. We just stood up and grabbed these cutlery by ourselves. We understood that the servers tried their best to serve all customers.
If you are craving for Chinese food in Chinatown, I would recommend you to try this restaurant.
The face of Chinatown has gradually faded over the years and been reimagined, Chinatown BBQ is a revitalized version of the classic BBQ restaurants that used to populate the area.
Video review on my youtube channel: vancity food crew chinatown bbq (if you wanna see the food in HD)
This place is legit. I went to try it out because there isn't a lot of really delicious asian barbecue places downtown, usually they are all in Richmond. This place delivers however. We ordered the soya chicken, bbq duck, and bbq pork. The bbq pork is standard, I've had better. The other two are really good. Great skin and flavour.
I returned a week later and tried the roast pork, its simply amazing. The crunch is proper hard and the meat is juicy.
I also hear their beef brisket curry is good, so I shall try that next time.
If there’s one kind of Chinese food that I’ve a particular soft spot for, it’s barbecued Chinese meats on rice. Sadly, there aren’t a whole lot of places that offer it, and of the ones that do, even fewer do it well. Then, I read in the Vancouver Sun about an up and coming barbecue restaurant in Chinatown that aimed to serve just what the nostalgia doctor ordered!
Yes. We,re Eating Again.

I love restaurants that not only have great food but have a great story also. The proprietor of Chinatown BBQ, Carol Lee, is part of a movement to preserve and restore the cultural heritage of a rapidly changing Chinatown. While restaurants like Juke and Mamie Taylor's move into the area and restaurants like Hon's Wun Tun House are moving out, we are in real danger of losing important Vancouver history and history of the Asian community. As a non Asian I have spent many pleasurable hours exploring the area and enjoying it's sights and especially the food. As a lover of history and our cultural diversity, I would hate to see it go and so I applaud this effort.
Chinatown BBQ is a Cantonese style barbecue restaurant and as you walk in the front door your mouth will begin to water immediately. You are met by the iconic barbecue case of duck and roast pork and chicken all leaving little doubt as to what you will want to eat! My partner and I were comfortably seated and served tea immediately. Take note of the tea! I asked and forgot what it was but it had some distinct citrus and herb notes and I loved it! We tried the Crispy Roast Pork on Rice and this made me weak in the knees. Tender and fatty with cracking skin, my utmost expectations were immediately fulfilled! We also had a Two BBQ Items on Rice combo with duck and barbecue pork. My partner who is a little pickier than I and sometimes does not care for duck enjoyed it very much. The duck was an excellent crispy golden color and very tender and succulent and not fatty and the pork was sweet and delicious also. Finally, we had the Soy Sauce Chicken Feet. This was a cold appetizer and a bit more of a challenge to eat than the dim sum type phoenix talons that we are used to but it was so tasty that we did not mind the effort. As always, we had too much food to eat (ordering too much is apparently what I do) but our server graciously packed it for us to go. This is a sharp looking little place evoking old Chinatown. It is decorated with some historic photos, nice green wood accents and comfortable seating. And reasonable prices also! There is no reason not to support this place and I look forward to Carol Lee's next project which is to restore Foo's Ho Ho just down the block!
Cute spot in Chinatown - retro diner meets Chinese restaurant! We came less than an hour before closing and while that meant they were out of BBQ duck, the soy chicken, vegetable fried rice and Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce did NOT disappoint. The chicken was so delicious and tender and the skin packed a lot of flavour. A great addition was the ginger and scallion side sauce provided for the chicken. The service was very fast and very friendly. Would highly recommend visiting for a meal!
Clean, simple, and fresh Cantonese fare in a hip retro-inspired interior with staff that is kind and attentive and efficient. I was immediately impressed by the pretty décor and the smartly outfitted host and servers. They are super kind and were gracious enough to have a conversation with me about their nationalities. The food is served in beautiful and traditional-inspired dishware, and then BBQ Duck in Noodle Soup that I ordered was delicious. I wish that the noodles were a bit longer because they were hard to scoop up with my chopsticks. The plum (?) sauce that accompanied the meat was yummy, and didn't taste like it came straight out of a jar. I really appreciate that after the meal the servers seem to ask all the customers about their experience and if they have been to the restaurant before. Even though many people are just stopping by for a quick bite, the attitude of the staff is very kind. I'll definitely be back.
Without a doubt the best Chinese BBQ restaurant my wife and I have been to. My favorite was the roast pork. So crispy and flavorful. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Appreciated the host recommending the 3 meat dish and Gai lan with chili crisp, a delicious combo that went very well together. I wish Boston or New York had Chinese BBQ this good!
I love going to this place not only for the amazing food but also for the retro vibe that reminds me of restaurants back in Asia.
We got the 3 BBQ meat platter and picked Roast Pork, BBQ duck, Soy Chicken. We would have also gotten BBQ pork but 4 meat dishes seemed a bit too much for just two people. We also got the Gai Lan with Oyster Sauce which was very flavourful.
This place honestly never disappoints. Food, ambiance, and service are top notch.
Really can’t go wrong with anything you order at Chinatown BBQ. Everything is delicious, good value and great atmosphere! You’ll hear your server tell you and every subsequent guest seated in your area about the best bang for your BBQ buck! Which is the duck of course, and pork 2 ways. Listen to him. Get only one appetizer if you want to finish your meal there, or get 2 or more if you want leftovers to take home. Amazing place, would return any time I’m nearby.
I love the BBQ duck. If normally you don’t eat duct because of its smell, you should try at this restaurant. It’s soft and tender.
I ordered: three BBQ meat platter (you can choose 3 meat) and Jellyfish Marinated in Sesame and Chili.
This place feels so peaceful and positive. The staff are sincerely gracious. The portion is generous for the price. I love the BBQ pork a lot! I must come back to try the other items.
