Review Nelson The Seagull Cafe - Vancouver

Great atmosphere with friendly staff. The coffee was good and it came in an amazing handmade mug. We ordered Peaches on Toast for light snack and it was delicious. The only complaint that I would have is that the bread was a bit too hard. But otherwise, it's a fantastic place to wind down and chill!

Best sourdough bread I’ve ever had in the town! I ordered the peach on toast and it was a fig walnuts(?) sourdough topped with ricotta, roasted peach, crushed walnut and mint. The texture of the sourdough was perfect, and you could definitely see the gluten formulated great structure by pulling a piece out to feel the stretch from the bread itself. The toppings had a pleasant summer taste which was light and sweet (but not too sweet for breakfast). The mint leaves were definitely the highlight of the entire toast, it elevated the total flavour and added a great kick to it. The store itself was extremely cute and well-decorated. The coffee was also great. It was a good location of quite reading or chatting with friends while enjoying the food and coffee.

Came here on a cold and gloomy day. The service was very nice. The pastry we got was the aged white cheddar and h croissant. It was really great warmed up! We also got the Nelson & Seagull sandwich which was just a normal sandwich, nothing super special about it. We love Mayo and there was extra Mayo on the sandwich so it was very enjoyable for us! The avocado toast was our fave food item. The coffee was really nice with a touch of honey.

Bread, FIRE. Pastries, FIRE. Atmosphere, calm and lovely. I haven't tried their coffee but I'm sure it's good, what I would recommend is any of their bread/pastry goods ESPECIALLY their sourdough. Boy. Their sourdough is amazing, the best sourdough I've had here. Soft and supple interior with a chewy and flaky exterior, their bread is perfect for toasting, eating alone or with some butter/jam, or making a sandwich. I highly recommend trying their Full Nelson Sourdough sandwich. The ingredients and how everything combines together so well. It's a homerun.

Great setting and store front. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Avocado toast was interesting and supposedly why millennials are broke! Super tasty coffee too.

Cosy and quiet ambiance. What a stark contrast with the street a bit further. Romantic and aesthetic place with fresh flowers. Recommandations : honey turmeric latte and a cookie. I don't drink coffee but I think they look amazing.

Very cute spot to enjoy good coffee and have a fresh snack, and also hang out ;) Bread is delicious! They also sell some nice local products.

We thought we'd checkout this awesome looking joint in the heart of Gastown with their intriguing 'Jol With Me, Honey!' as Parr of the Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival 2022, a great cause and way to support local businesses. Their hot chocolate was super yummy, really tasty and an elegant vibe of infusing honey without making it too sweet tasting. Absolutely rad, loved every second and the honeycomb chocolate treat was the perfect dipping buddy! Trust me, some of our friends got hot chocolates from other places but this joint was a cut above by far and our buddies were super jealous eh. A great vibe, super sweet joint to eat and drink in a laid back and minimalist clean setting. I love how they have an open style bake house inside and look to make some dope looking baked treats! Support local businesses!

This is the cafe I have been (dreaming of and) looking for! I am a student and love to post up hours on end in a cozy cafe. Nelson the Seagull has lots of places to sit, big tables, several outlets, free wifi, a water station and the best avocado toast! I love the ambiance, vibe and the customer service is awesome. I highly, highly recommend!!

The service, ambience and quality were excellent. On the edge of East Hastings Street the most poorest part of Vancouver and nextdoor to historical Chinatown it location could be challenging. Far from that it blends it well .The clientele include middle aged toutists to young hipsters. A great place to hang out a while.

best bread in Vancouver hands down. only loaf I have had that nears the texture in paris. their plates are simple and beautiful.

It was a cozy place. But the service was slow. Waited long to get Picinic Board - which was like cold cuts and three kinds of jam and some veggies. Don't know why it took so long. Well, food was tasty. I would go back for Avocado Toast for another try.

I absolutely love going here for breakfast. Poached eggs with avocado gets me every time.

zing that leaves my tongue tingling in the most lovely way. Slather that butter on the bread and dip it. into the soup or do none of that and just eat the bread dry but either way, you. are in for a treat because the bread is a true delight, and quite possibly the. real star of the show. Presented with a choice of three sandwiches,

Sort of a dodgy area, but what amazing food and fast & warm service. Their avocado toasts are hyped for a reason- they’re THAT good! One time I was here, someone from the street came in and snatched someone’s food, but the manager/owner in charge apologized many times & offered the customers a free meal!

Really delicious avocado. Perfectly riped. Toast was a little hard though. Love the salad, toast and avocado combination. Nelson the Seagull is at point X in Places Part 4 on the map below:. This is a popular bakery/cafe located in Gastown. I guess you can describe them as being hipster: the seating consists of communal long tables (and a few smaller tables for groups) and food is served on wooden boards. In addition to fresh baked bread and various other treats, they have a small menu of sandwiches, breakfast items, and drinks. I had their Lemon Zest Marzipan Croissant, Carnivore Sandwich, and Jam Wheel. While I wasn't blown away by the food, I thought it was still pretty solid. The prices are a tad on the higher side, but not unreasonable. This is a spot worth checking out.

Lemon Zest Marzipan Croissant ($4.00):
3.5/5
The pastry was quite flaky and tender, with a slightly salty flavour and a nice fragrance of lemon zest. I do wish that there was more marzipan.

Carnivore Sandwich ($12:00):
4/5
This contained roast beef, pesto, cheese, and mustard, and was served on their housemade sourdough bread. It came with a small side of greens, which didn't seem to be well dressed and was bland, although I did enjoy the strawberries that were mixed in. The bread was crusty on the outside and tender and chewy on the inside, and appears to have been lightly buttered. The filling was very tasty, with the meat being tender and smoky, the cheese creamy and sharp and the pesto lending a nice flavor and fragrance. It is a tad on the salty side, but I quite enjoyed it.

Jam Wheel ($4:00):
3.5/5
The pastry was a tad soggy, but still flaky and had a nice buttery flavour. The jam was not overly sweet, thick, and filled with blueberries. This was simple but tasty.

Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 3.5/5
Service: N/A
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: The Carnivore

I would give 3.5 stars.

I came here for breakfast before going to work. I saw good reviews about this cozy cafe. It is located in Gastown. Its interior design and ambience are quite cool and it does have its look and feel.

I ordered a flat white and carvinore sandwiches (rare roast beef). The portion of the cup of coffee and sandwiches was small in general. It was great that staff at the back of the kitchen made fresh sandwiches. However, the sandwiches cost $12. I could have spent this $12 on something else that would be nicer and better. The quality of the flat white and cappuccino was just average. The mustard made the sandwiches tasted very salty. The rare roast beef itself was not salty though. Also, the bread or sandwiches were cold.

The customer service was great that staff were friendly. People who came here usually walked but not driving as it is hard to find parking on the streets.

My breakfast cost $16 (sandwiches $12 and flat white $4) and I had it on a weekday. I could have spent $16 on a very delicious brunch on a weekend.

This is a very homey brunch/lunch place. 😋 The inside is very spacious and there’s plenty of tables to sit and enjoy a coffee or do some work. The menu is very simple. I ordered the Nelson sandwich and my boyfriend the Carnivore sandwich. I really enjoyed the bread. Would definitely come here again to try the coffee!! ☺️

Nice open concept, cozy and good coffee. I tried the pouched eggs and added smoked salmon. Tasty but I agree with some of the reviews that the meal was pricey. Two slices of sour dough bread with pouched eggs at $11.00 and added smoked salmon for another $4.00

Some salad was added, but I couldn’t taste if any dressing was added. I ordered latte too. I think my bill came out to $20.00
I’ve attached pic of food and coffee. The place is nice and cozy, but I may go somewhere else for lunch. But the pics of sandwiches look good! Maybe I’ll try the sandwiches next time.

I stopped by At Nelson the Seagull with a friend to get some studying done. Let me tell you right now, it was hard to focus in a café this nice! The ambience is very nice and clean, and the light coming in from the windows just added to the aesthetics. Service was amazing as well, there are people that bring the food you order to your table.

The food was good! I had the carnivore sandwich, and my friend had the poached eggs on toast with avocado. The roast beef in my sandwich was the highlight. Beautifully tender and flavourful. The sandwich was cold, however, and the bread was hard to bite into. I would definitely prefer that it was a warm, toasted sandwich. I got to try the eggs, and they were well made, but the yolk wasn't as runny as I'd expected it to be. When the yolk was split, it was half-set. Just a small issue though. The dish was well-balanced in flavour, and the greens tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette gives you the acid you need to cut through the richness and fat of the two dishes.

The coffee here is pretty good too, although it's not mind-blowingly amazing. It's not that acidic which I really like, and it was bold enough to leave a pleasant sensation on the tongue. All in all, I will be coming back for sure!

If you love avocado on toast, then this is the place for you! Great range in pastry’s, sandwiches, and rich lattes! Awesome study environment with such a cozy feel!

Takeaway - nice, but WAY too expensive for what it is.

The place itself was nice. Very cool kind of feeling. The toast was good, but insanely priced at $9 for Avo on Toast which can be had for $4 at a cafe very close by. Toast and jam for $5 is just as outrageous. Not to mention the incredibly tiny portion of the flat white for $4.

From the moment I stepped foot inside it was clear their bread game was on point. I loved the open concept and being able to see the entire bakery in the back. It was definitely a hipster vibe, lots of people sitting at the communal tables with laptops and notebooks. They have a simple menu, you order at the till and they bring the food out. They have all the standard coffee options, poached eggs and toast, sandwiches, soup and a small selection of baked goods. I had the vegan sandwich and side of butternut squash soup. Unfortunately the food was very bland and the soft bread just didn't hold up. I'd like to come back and try it toasted with avocado and maybe a latte but I'm not in a hurry.
Vancouver Barista
Nelson the Seagull has been around since 2011, though she’s still got beauty in that old interior. The detail on those high ceilings, remind me of fine cheekbones on a porcelain face. Her grey eyes, those huge windows looking out onto a cloudy sky, sweep me somewhere far away from the Downtown Eastside.
There is something unconventional and other worldly about this place. And it all starts with their muse, Nelson Mandela. Lest you forget, a blown up photo is above their counter, a young man sporting boxing gloves, literally jumping out of photo, in his best fighting stance.

Way over priced. $25 with tip for two orders of avocado toast and a coffee. It took nearly half an hour to get our food which seemed pretty excessive for sliced avocado on bread. The avocado toast came buttered which I wasn't expecting or wanting. The bread was fine, but nothing spectacular compared to other artisan bakeries. The avocado had some brown spots. When you're paying an absurd amount for two slices of bread with avocado on top, you expect it to be perfect. The atmosphere was nice, but I certainly won't be back as I left feeling so disappointed.
Eatwithmao
Coming here just for the sourdough bread is worth it. The popularity of the avocado toast results in them running out for the day often which leaves us in disappointment. Always come early if you want to eat this.
Everything But Weddings
If you love poached eggs and avocado toast, you must go here. While the food is generally consistently good, the last time I was there, one of my eggs was overcooked, which was a disappointment. Something to watch out for. I still give them a 4 because this was just a blip in the grand scheme of things. All the ingredients were fresh and great quality and they all taste good. I'll still keep coming back for more.

Overall: average service, wonderful space, fantastic bread, price is a bit steep for what you get.

Ordered: eggs on toast with side of mushrooms & cortado

My experience here was just so-so.
The food was very basic for the price you pay. It was $14 for 2 eggs on 2 pieces of toast that came with a small side tomato salad and mushrooms that I paid additional for. It was underwhelming and tasted average.
The bread alone was quite fantastic though. Flavourful, wonderful structure and crust.
Cortado was well made. Fair priced
Service could be better. They don't have descriptions on the menu for what each sandwich had inside. I had to ask the guy at the cash who was quite annoyed with I asked him about a 3rd one.
My side of mushrooms was also forgotten, which was fine because the girl in the kitchen said she never received the note but will make right away. Sadly she forgot about it and I ended up waiting for another good 20mins before I went up to her and asked for it again.

I'll probably be back but just for coffee and bread.

Meal: Lunch
One-liner: Expensive lunch cafe with disappointing results unless you like rock-hard sourdough
Highlight: The ambiance, because the food didn’t cut it for me here
Estimated cost per person: $15
Would I go back? No.

Check out my blog post for the full review!

I am a huge fan of Nelson the Seagull bread. If there were another location around the city, I would be a more frequent visitor (when I just crave the bread, there is also an option to get some at 43 Acres or Matchstick). The avocado sandwich is huge and satisfying and is really enough for 2 mini meals. I also love their house jam with a side of rooibos tea. The only downside is that I find the service is quite slow and the staff not very friendly, but perhaps it was just my luck on the days that I visited.

After seeing a million instagram shots of this I wanted to see for myself how good it was. And I was definitely disappointed. It wasn’t anything special, and I don’t think it warrants the high praise that it gets. The toast completely cut up the roof of my mouth, and this is definitely something that I can easily make at home for the fraction of the cost.

Took advantage of the extra day off to spend more time with my lovely friends, who I feel like I haven’t seen in forever. I may have been neglecting them a bit, but weekends are now for working and napping. S and I went to Nelson the Seagull in Gastown…. We had poached eggs with mushrooms, a sandwich named after Nelson, and a latte. Join me as I discuss these in detail.

Ive been dying to try this place for months, you see... i LOVE avocado and when i saw an IG post from them about avo toast I died inside. I was the first to arrive one early morning because I was planning on staying for a while to finish up some notes and to study. I ordered the avo toast and a lemonade and both were delicious! The sourdough is baked fresh and had a great crust but was still oh-so soft and pillowy on the inside. The lemonade was pretty standard but I would definitely come back to try other items on their menu.
Larbear
A whole avocado with two slices of bread was a bit much for me, so I was able to order a half order of the avocado toast with a side salad. The avocado on fresh sour dough was delicious, and the salad was good too. Cute Cafe too with lots of natural lighting and nice decor.
Rsvp.M
Cosy atmospheric location in a booming neighbourhood. The picnic board we ordered had a lil bit of everything they offered as advertised, but their chutney and pesto lacked a punch in terms of flavours. The soup was fine but not something i would go back for neither was the carnivore roast beef sAndwich.
Fork.it
Ordered the grilled cheese sandwich and the meat board. The bread used for the sandwich was amazing!!! Wish we bought some bread to go. The grilled cheese itself was delicious, fresh tomatoes and gooey cheese.
Naoki_art
I've never been a bread lover but the rustic sourdough here has made me a believer! Avocado on toast for $8 sounds overpriced until you try it. The bread is so soft inside with a crunchy crust, buttered and topped with generous avocado slices, salt, and pepper. Rich, creamy, decadent. Wait time can be long at lunch - you can call to place your order if you're short on time.
Romina Moradi
Love the pour over coffee . Sadly however, I didn't enjoy the French Toast and found it overpriced for $8. It was basically toasted bread with butter and blueberry compote .
DineVancity
I had the picnic board while I was here and I absolutely loved the bread that they served. Soft on the inside and firm on the outside, maybe a little toasted would have been nice. The atmosphere of this cafe was very relaxing. Looks like a quiet place for a lot of people to come and get some work done.
Mitkaese
Yet another bland and over priced hipster joint. Though, gotta say the bread is decent. The espresso is also not that bad. There are many better places just steps away!
Kris Moore
Visited this cafe for a late breakfast and coffee while I was downtown. Atmosphere is nice and it has a cool rustic feel with a bakery in the back where they make fresh bread. I found the service to be a little less than enthusiastic and the barista seemed unimpressed with my uncertainty in ordering. I settled on a cappuccino and a strawberry danish. The cappuccino was really really good - I savoured every sip. The strawberry danish was good - nothing out of the ordinary for a danish. I wish I would have known about the baked cheesy bread - oh well, guess I'll have to go back now to see what all the hype is about.

Love love loveeeee this place! I saw pictures of their food and it looked nice, but I had my doubts on the actual taste, however I ordered the picnic set and the avocado toast and WOW. Sooo delicious! I cannot wait to go back, the smell of freshly baked bread helps the already nice ambience of the cafe. If you're an avocado fan (or even if you aren't, like me) this place is a must-try!
TheNugger
This is a completely hipster place that doesn't even have good food. The lemonade is okay but the food is only satisfactory. Would not recommend this place.

Nelson The Seagull, a cafe that is, surprisingly, not on Nelson street. It is quite close to VFS if I remember correctly. The interior is spacious and bright. People making sourdough in the back was really cool and overall it was a sweet place to be. What can I say, I found a new appreciation of Avocados on Toast. It was great avocados with buttered housemade sourdough. The flat white was not bad either.

I have been there a few times as I work around the corner. When I miss good bread and some cold cuts, I use to go there. As a Swiss person, we love bread and I really miss it here in Vancouver. Seagull's bread is one of the city's best and satisfies parts of my bread needs.

So Swiss love bread but also we like it clean. Unfortunately, that's not the Seagull's strength. I noticed everytime that the dishes are not cleaned properly. Especially the water glasses are terrible. If you pick them up, nearly all of them are very dirty which kills my appettite. If what you see is dirty, I don't want to imagine how the invisible may look. I just hope it looks better in the kitchen.

I use to share the picknick board and add a salad or soup. It can be improved. Everytime, they have the same stuff on it. Make it more seasonal. Also the soup was the same after 1 month (squash). The food on the board is good but the walnuts taste old or like they got wet.

While my friend and I were waiting for our foodies come for dinner at Malt and Marrow, we were looking for a cafe in downtown to munch on some snacks. My friend wanted to have a Nelson the Seagull's Picnic Board so we walked down there. The place was spacious with the bright sunshine coming through the windows. Even though they didn't have an extensive menu, it seemed like every food item they had was was worth trying out.

Because we were going to have dinner in 2 hours, we only had a PICNIC BOARD ($15) which was like a DIY sandwich platter. A selection of sandwich ingredients on the wooden board included some bread slices, hummus, chutney (a mixture of spices, apples and dried fruits), pesto, swiss cheese, walnuts, corned beef, cucumbers, tomatoes, artichoke, avocado and strawberry. I liked how I could make several different sandwiches by using a variety of ingredients they provided. I simply put some veggies and spreads on a slice of breads and enjoyed them a lot. My favourite combination would be avocado, swiss cheese, corn beef, pesto and hummus.
This place can be perfect for enjoying your breakfast/brunch/lunch or maybe for someone who needs to work on their stuff on computer as I saw many people doing it. Come out on a sunny day and enjoy the sunshine while eating good food!

PROS
+ Picnic board is a must
+ Fresh ingredients
+ Spacious
+ Good for brunch/lunch

CONS
- Sketchy areas close by
- Not many food options

RATING
Food 3.5/5.0
Ambience 3.5/5.0
Service 4.0/5.0
Price $

I love the space more than anything else. It has a really cool interior with an open kitchen. It's very well decorated and is how I would want my house to look.

The food isn't bad either. Their bread is nice and fresh. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I highly recommend their picnic board too!

They could improve on their coffee program a little bit. They have so much potential.

So is this where all the hipsters hang out and eat their $8 avocado toasts? Yep, you heard that right, their avocado toast is $8 LOL. I keep seeing pictures of those fancy looking slices of avocado toast on instagram!! But the $8 isn't for the avocado. It's for the bread! Nelson has ah-mazing house made bread. Everyone comes here for their bread - and their overpriced avocado on toast of course ;) Yea, it's nothing fancy, but it's not meant to be. It's simple food, done right!! :D The inside of Nelson the Seagull looks a bit similar to my house LOL. Yes, my dad was a hipster long before it became "cool" LOL. The furniture, the artwork, are all strangely reminiscent of home. He's really into rustic/old school decor, our house is littered with rantiques haha. Since moving in with him his hipster ways have really rubbed of on me LOL (is that why I've been hanging around Gastown so much?!) I showed my dad the pictures in this post and he was really impressed with the decor!! He was like "Wow, this is a restaurant? Where is this?" And I was like "This is so you right?!" and he nodded in silence LOL. I should really bring him here sometime. For the ambiance though, not the food (cause he'll probably think its overpriced haha!) You guys probably don't know this about me - but I'm allergic to raw nonorganic veggies/fruit!! If it's boiled/heated then it's fine, but I'm allergic to raw veggies because of the pesticides on them!! That's why I don't eat fruit that often LOL (terrible I know) I can only eat organic fruit and my grandma hates me for it LOL...but I can't help that I'm allergic to pesticides!! :( In my mind I was hoping that Nelson would use organic veggies (I forgot to ask) but turns out they don't...because after my first bite I got a huge lump inside my mouth and it started bleeding!! :( Picnic Board $15 Bread: 4.5/5 stars Roast Beef: 3/5 stars Hummus: 3.5/5 stars How cute is this little board?! It's exactly what you would bring on a picnic, mini

Eggs. Avocado. Homemade bread. How much better can it get? The only concern I had with this place is that it was expensive, but otherwise I loved it!

It’s no secret that Nelson the Seagull is one of my fave Gastown spots. Had brunch here this weekend with some great people, and it was fantastic.
Syd
That fresh bread though. I got it with a simple broccoli soup, and my friends had it with meat sandwiches. Quite simple, yet satisfying and tasty. They've got a big open space, good for a lunch or coffee. I like that you can see some of the baking going on in the back as it's all open.
Rhoda.harel
Nah. It's a cool looking place and I'm happy we got to try it, but I don't see myself coming again. We got the avocado toast that to our disappointment lost the delicate flavor of the fruit because it was over salted and peppered. for 8$, it's not worth coming again.
Geek_design
Nelson the Pompous Seagull. $17 for 2 tiny poached eggs and 2 wafer thin slices of roast beef on 2 small slices of bread. Absolutely delicious, no doubt, but the price?! Outrageous. Even more so after I saw a notice at the till which read along the lines of "because we live in a low-income area, we are doing a pay-it-forward scheme so that less fortunate people can have a free coffee".

LOVE LOVE LOVE. This place is amazing! great food, great prices great services, it is a little slow but thats ONLY because everything is SO fresh

Sourdough Bread. I ordered pear avocado on one sourdough piece and 2 eggs on another. The yolk oozed out with perfection and the dish came with a light salad. I devoured it all in a blink. The sourdough bread takes it to home base. Pretty sure the washroom is haunted. The dim lighting does not help. The staff is very sweet. I would've stayed but the customer I was sharing a table with was sighing loudly and excessively and crampin' up my style.
Alice
This place it wonderful.. We were walking around Gastown and passed by this place. I had never heard anything about it, although I have walked by it numerous times. I was wanting a nibble so we stopped in and shared a picnic board and a soup. Boy was it good—no excellent. The bread was lovely and chewy, as any really good bread should be, the picnic board came beautifully presented with cheese and dips and chutneys and avocado and other little nibbles. It was huge and tasty. Between that and the one soup, it filled the two of us up. The owner seemed charming and the staff great, and it was just a great relaxing place to get a wonderful bite to eat. We were so glad we went in. Did I mention how good the bread is?

Very nicely done. Amazing

Super slow service. worst hours. worst hipster crowd clientele. delicious food.

Bluespoon. Ambience is warm, open-space, warehouse feel where you can feel comfortable communing with others. food is nothing special to rave about- poached egg sitting on top of toasted bread with a few leaves thrown on the side took a half hour to prepare and is 8 bucks! No cream, only milk for coffee and water jug was empty. would go back just for ambience and toast- nothing more.
Inna Paola
Not impressed at all. The ambience was alright...the food was not impressive at all. I had the vegan sandwich..the bread was so hard, i couldn't eat through my whole sandwich until I cut out the crust of my bread. For a $7.50 sandwich, I def expected something better -- good and EDIBLE bread and filling! And the so-called homemade almond milk that everyone raves about isn't even that amazing.
Vegggirl
The almond milk is divine, and the decor is cool.
Sofia
Cosy and awesome. This place is awesome. Why? Because they make their own almond milk! Almond milk lattes with real almond milk! And a daily vegan soup with thick slices of in house freshly baked bread. With their own vegan pesto! Essential the food is very simple and down to earth, which I love. They also serve sustainable charcuterie if meat is your thing. The room is beautiful with the heritage building very much in tact and vintage and found furniture . Lots of communal tables but a few tables for two if you are lucky enough to snag one. Love it here.

Hip spot. Another hip and kinda cool and cozy place in the Gastown area. My buddy took me here because he watches this show called Bomb Girl.

Ordered the lunch sandwich with meat (due to my allergy to fruit and veg), aka Carnivore.

It was a bit expensive for a sandwich. I also ordered a $3 house made lemonade that came in a small jam container glass jar (it was too sweet that my blood sugar OD'd after the meal) The meal came to $15

But the moment the 'cilantro pesto' met my tongue ... voila!

Nice for fika. Me and boyfriend love coming here for the bread and cheese plate and a nice cup of espresso. The owners are very friendly. We love the atmosphere, especially the open kitchen - makes it feel like we're chillin' at a friends extremely dope ground level apartment.

Love to find "Flat white". Hi I came from Sydney, Australia, and when I visited this cozy cafe in Gastown, I thrilled to find "Flat White" in the beverage menu. (Believe or not, coffee culture in Aus is quite amazing, we have so many different types of coffees....) Anyway, ordered Flat white of course, and zucchini muffin caught my eyes. Hmmm loved it a lot, but on that day due to the strange figure of the muffin, they did not charge me.! They even gave me another one for to go. Wow-I think it shows their pride / pursuing the high quality on their food. I've also tried picnic board the other day and it was enjoyable. Reminds me Sydney days - yes, we go on a picnic with a b/ of white on a sunny day A LOT!

By the way, don't miss out their lady's room, I felt like "I can live here!" ....was so cute. :)
Jacinta
Not only are the sandwiches delicious, but the space creates a wide-open yet intimate atmosphere. The carnivore sandwich is by far my favourite, and the little lemon tarts are so tasty. The only thing I wish for is more pastries!

Ok, so their seats are made of metal, and the attention to further tres groovy detail is almost exhausting from their millk and cream bar to their hip none-plussed cashier who will never die of hyper tension, it is a almost too cool to eat in vast space. But, despite this, I have to say there is something so damn appealing about this place it seems to work. Food quality is good, your mind won't be blown nor will you start dancing in the street but, you feel they are really trying to be honest. The Carnivore sandwich is $ 9 and their Herbivore $ 6. Being a flesh eater I had the Carni, it was good, great bread, slapped with pesto instead of mayo (nice surprise) and came with a cheery little side salad. Their Cappiciono was delish too. So I left happy with a half sandwich left over for an afternoon snack. I give it a B

Fantastic pastries. I will definitely be back to try their savory pastries!

Love it...but.... I really love this place. There are a few things to tweak.
Please put your hours and a message on your answering machine. Also, please put your hours on your website and front door. I am persistent and was finally was able to get inside! I found the staff a little snobby, far from warm. The food was great! The atmosphere is the best in Vancouver!

Nelson the Seagull. Fantastic space, friendly staff and delicious food at reasonable prices! Visiting once made me want to go back to school so I could spend all my time hanging out and studying there. Seating is somewhat limited for how huge the space is and how popular this spot is sure to be.

Nelson the Seagull, a not so tiny paradise in a fast changing Gastown. Opened by 3 wonderful young South Africans, Jonathan, Lee and Jodie. Jonathan the solo barista serves up some of the tastiest coffee ive had in the city, on a very classy lever press espresso machine (lovingly nicknamed Zooey) They use only organic and Fair Trade coffee of African origin, as well as being one of the few cafes that uses oragnic milk! They also have home made almond milk available.
Not only can you get a great coffee but they also bake their own fresh breads and other delicious treats! Theres a scrumptious looking breakfast and lunch menu as well as daily soups (mostly vegan friendly) I came in one rainy day to try a coffee and ended up sitting by the window eating a South African porridge and catching up on some serious people watching. If you have the time local or not i would definitely recommend stopping by to hear the story of Nelson the Seagull, meeting the genuine and friendly people behind it and enjoy the great atmosphere!

Overall, I suggest a visit to Nelson the Seagull, they have tasty sandwiches and delicious store baked bread. Some of the food items are pricey but overall it is well worth a visit.

Long Live Feasts
The pricing of their food is relatively inexpensive compared to other brunch places I’ve dined at. The herbivore sandwich, priced at $7.50 is seriously a steal considering the quality of ingredients used.

Mr hadn’t planned on ordering any food but I blurted out this order before he could object. I remember seeing this on Scout Magazine’s “Awesome Thing We Ate” so I knew we had to give it a shot. Verdict? It is an awesome thing that we ate as well. Such a simple concept of ripe avocado on top of their fresh bread with some butter, salt and pepper, but it’s in that simplicity that you can taste all of the amazing ingredients together. The bread itself is amazing – fresh baked and just lightly toasted to add a bit of crunch. If you’re in the neighbourhood, this simple dish is worth the drop by.

The food is fantastic – everything is fresh and made in-house at its open concept kitchen.
What A Pavlova
First I ordered their “grainy” salad with quinoa and grapefruit. This was really nice, refreshing.

Nelson the Seagull is one of the best things to happen to Vancouver since I moved here. Every place should aspire to do what Nelson the Seagull does. Namely: 1) serve amazing food, prepared fresh, sourced locally when possible, and all with a laser focus on quality. 2) prepare perfectly-made espressos (and I mean perfectly) sourced from local, responsible roasters (Agro). 3) be the place that I want to hang out in all day and never want to leave. It's the place in Gastown for espresso, breakfast, and lunch. With the food being prepared right before your eyes, Nelson is doing what every restaurant and cafe should be doing: putting themselves out there for public scrutiny, holding themselves accountable to their patrons, and not feeling the need to hide themselves behind walls and kitchens and cutting corners like so many cafes and restaurants are apt to do nowadays. And in doing so they provide a live show into their food preparation and organization. This is not just the place to spend

Andy ordered the carnivore sandwich ($10) . I believe their sandwich fillings varies, but today, his sandwich was filled with roast beef, boerenkaas cheese, dijon, and cilantro pesto

The cafe is simple in concept, design and open space. I’m serious about the open space as the kitchen is wide open and placed at the very back of the space! There are two big areas with long tables to do work at and a couple smaller tables and a couch area.

It was a lot of fun and the food was delicious. I highly recommend the dining experience.

Nelson the Seagull is a cafe in Gastown. They are known for their coffee and their simple foods. Once you step foot inside of here, you'll realize its very hipster. It's a great place to do some work over a coffee, or just sit to find inspiration. The space is very very open. I've heard lots about it, so I came to have lunch here with KoreanGirl, Mandu and Jojocake. Their kitchen is very open, no wall, no doors, nothing. You can see them at work making your meal. Here is their menu. Tea ($2.50) comes in their super cool ceramic cups. Its shaped like a crinkled beer cup. You know, the one where you play beer pong with. Kinda expensive for tea…but I love tea. Carnivore Sandwich ($9) has cilantro pesto, dijon, boerenkaas cheese, and Big Lou's Pastrami on top of their house made rustic bread. It also comes with a mini salad on the side consisting of apple, spinach and onion with a vinaigrette sauce. All of us at the table ended up ordering the carnivore sandwich. I think it was the only

Personally I love to hit up Nelson the Seagull when I’m doing a downtown trip all on my own. It is a great place to people watch, enjoy a light meal, have an amazing cappuccino and find some inspiration. I usually always order their “Avo on Toast”, which is lovely ripe sliced avocado on top of specialty bread sprinkled with salt and pepper. It is light and always hits the spot for me while I’m enjoying the space to its fullest. Nelson the Seagull doesn’t have any available highchairs but this is a very welcoming and big space so strollers, car seats, children and breastfeeders are always greeted with a huge smile. This is where to eat in Vancouver to escape the rain with your family and have a nibble.

It is a bit pricey and if you’re not into this healthy, organic style of eating, then it’s a lovely place for a great cup of specialty coffee (hipster), homemade lemonade (*ahem* hipster again) and light lunch or snack.

With its simple charm and open kitchen, Nelson the Seagull it’s a great place to sit and hang out, whether it’s surrounded by friends or just alone with a book.

315 Carrall Street Vancouver, BC V6B 2J4 T: 604 681 5776 www.nelsontheseagull.com Brief Description: A charming no-frills café in Gastown that offers some of the best coffee in Vancouver with simple, honest food. Prices are exceptionally fair. It is with hesitation that I review and post to the world about this new find. So selfish am I that I want to keep this little gem to myself so that it doesn't get too popular. It is already quite difficult to get a seat on a Saturday morning… Nelson the Seagull is a rare find in a city full of cookie-cutter chain restaurants and uninspiring Starbucks. Even the name has a very interesting story behind it. Nelson the Seagull is the real deal; honest, simple, charming. Let me explain… The food, and preparation of said food, is honest. Almost all of the food is made in-house from local products, with a push towards organic (I love that they use organic milk for the coffee). From the fresh baked goods, to the spongy ciabatta, to their very own a

I have an ambivalent feeling, not towards Nelson The Seagull 's staff, location and food (which I absolutely loved, so much so that I blurted out quite loudly that I was annoyed by the six or seven hipsters who were hogging tables AT LUNCH TIME), but towards the price of their food. Admittedly, sandwiches in this part of town (Gastown) are now going up to $10-15 per sandwich for lunch, but I think that is a little bit on the excessive side (particularly when you can have a fantastic lunch at MoMo Sushi for $7. I am not kidding). Prices aside, the staff at Nelson The Seagull are amazing, the ambiance is really nice, the room is spacious and comfortable. All ingredients to make your sandwiches are made in house. I ordered a roast beef sandwich (which was big and I wasn't really hungry afterwards) with hummus and pesto. The roast beef was great, and the hummus had the perfect blend of spices. At a $10 price point, and with a very small portion of salad to go, it was a bit on the expensive
