Love this place so much. On Thursdays they make an incredible Green Tuber cake which is one of a kind. The food, service and location is great! And nestled in between 2 art galleries. I think the American's are great here.
I recently went out for lunch with my mother downtown and she says she’s a regular at this Vietnamese restaurant. If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me. First impression, the menu is on the wall and it took me a minute to find where the noodle soups were. There is probably less than a handful of options for pho but definitely more rice dishes, western options, and desserts.
Downtown does not have a lot of Vietnamese restaurants. This one is considered a good one with reasonable pricing, good quality and many options. We love it.
We ordered a bowl of spicy rice noodles and lemon grass chicken with vermicelli and a spring roll. Both dishes were great. The rice noodles were the round thick ones that we loved the firmness and texture of it. Only one critic about the spring roll from the vermicelli dish was that the size was small and there were only 3 pieces.
The ambiance was okay. Space was quite big in the restaurant comparing to others. Customer service was average. It seems one of the servers didn’t quite understand English or English as their second language. We had to repeat our orders and made sure she got it.
Overall we had a great experience eating Vietnamese food in downtown. We would recommend to our friends and family to try it if they are in the neighbourhood.
came here during a lazy weekday afternoon, was thinking of a quick food to eat, and hmmm found this place in the middle of downtown and apparently is one of my bookmarked restaurants.. so went in, and ordered vermicelli, definitely good, i love it the juicyness of the lemongrass chicken, the nuts, and veggies mixed well enough to make a delicious lunch, definitely a good quick lunch in the area if you're craving for vietnamese food.
Great restaurant for a quick lunch during work hours. Their soups are super tasty and the portions are generous. Service is quick and our food was out within 10 minutes. It gets really busy during lunchtime and so it feels like one of those in and out places (rather than to sit down, relax and talk). There was lots of takeout too. I saw quite a few reserved tables but their phone was not in service so I couldn't make mine, that's something to fix. Ventilation isn't' great either, I came out smelling like the restaurant. Overall I'd recommend it for a quick lunch.
Good Vietnamese option for this side of downtown. They've got a few unique dishes outside of the typical pho. I like to order their bun (vermicelli) dishes because they really know how to grill meat well and their house fish sauce is great. At lunch time this place is super packed.
○good service/ call first and reserve if you want seats
○decent food but not the best Vietnamese food
○office meeting kind of place/ can be family friendly but a little on the tight side and very loud
○would I go back? Yes
Pretty nice Vietnamese place in the middle of downtown. Service was decent, and I liked how there was a huge vegetarian selection. Also, the lemon chicken smelled amazing for all you carnivores, though I just stuck with my tofu. Portions for the lemon chicken were not up to par, so my friend suggest to get the vermicelli versus the rice option.
Skytrain was broken again last night. Were you stranded on this urban island. Left figuring how to build a raft to get home, like thousands of other commuters. I was shivering on the sidewalk. Icy cold, standing in the wind turning, any residual good mood left in me leaving, fast, gone.Maybe I should have just turned on my heel, headed back into downtown, had some Vietnamese. Vietnamese is one of my favourite things to eat. Homey dishes, rice noodles in a soupy meat broth, fresh vinegary vegetables in crusty baguette. Grilled pork, cilantro, chili. Pickled, fermented.Joyeaux Café is the place we head for when life feels like it’s a little mean. This pretty French inspired café, with rounded archways, plain wood, jumble of tables, turn around this dark mood. A massive chalkboard menu crawls up to the ceiling with family style and individual dishes. They also do brisk take-out business and catering.
A completely unassuming exterior just beyond Dunsmuir on Howe led to a very spacious and welcoming interior. The service was kind, the food was delicious, and the prices were very fair. Would absolutely come back.
This little hole in the wall has been on my radar for AGES now! I’ve heard nothing but good things about not only their service but about the quality of their offerings too! Joined by a few coworkers, we ventured down Howe St. to Joyeaux Cafe!
Really great pho, especially on a cold and rainy Vancouver day. They also have good stir fry and salad rolls. It gets really busy at lunch so to get a table you need to go early.
I like this place. Food is always good. Probably my favourite Vietnamese sit down place downtown. They also have some breakfast/brunch menu too. Pho is great although the soup base is a tad bit sweeter than what I would like but then I just don't put any hoisin sauce. I recommend this place good food at reasonable prices. The portions are pretty generous too.
My supervisor at work invited me for lunch today at a Vietnamese cafe resto in the heart of downtown Vancouver. As I am always interested in trying a new place, I was excited by the opportunity. She had been there already once before and enjoyed it, and as she is Chinese-Vietnamese, I fully trust her judgment.
Daisy is a big fan of pho and has been trying to get me to go to Joyeaux Cafe with him for lunch for quite some time now, and so this time I finally said yes. Considering the name of the restaurant is almost French (I just realized it’s not joyeux which means merry in French), I was surprised that this place was in fact Vietnamese. Fun fact of the day, the name made me wonder so I brushed up on my history and it turns out French was the official language in Vietnam in the mid-19th century while the French were there. Around 5% of the population still speaks French today! Neato. We went a little earlier than usual for lunch, arriving around 11:30 to a large and mostly empty restaurant. Apparently the lunch rush gets crazy busy here and there’s always a queue so he wanted to avoid the crowds by eating a bit earlier. They have a small outdoor patio out front as well, though it’s not really the type of place I’d think to go for a beer on a patio. The menu is fairly diverse with a number of options including sandwiches, salads, soups, and of course pho. Daisy frequents them quite a bit and ordered himself the Special Beef Ball Noodle Soup (aka pho) and being a caffeine junkie with a m
Came in here on a Wednesday afternoon and had one of their lunch specials "Beef brisket on steamed-rice or French bread" and I had to say that it was satisfactory. I found the beef pretty adamantine though. The service was average, the interior actually looks marvellous I wasn't expecting it to be like that considering the outside look. This is very different from any other vietnamese restaurants.
Standard?. Hard for me to tell the difference between the Vietnamese cafes. The grilled pork/spring roll vermicelli dish was good, the crabmeat/shrimp noodle soup was not as good, incredibly fishy but i suppose a hit for those who enjoy the flavours of the sea! All in all though i did enjoy my meal hence the 'like' vote :)
I stop in every time I'm in Vancouver. The food is traditional, fresh and full of flavour! The owner is amazing and you can't beat the prices. This place is a hidden gem.
Finally got a chance to stop by this hidden gem in downtown. Food is tasty and price is reasonable. Good photo place if you're craving it in downtown Vancouver. It's pretty much a self serve restaurant. Friendly staff.
Overall experience: thumb's up
Went here with a group of 15 and the service was quick! The omelette was really good. The fruit was scarce. There were 6 fried potatoes slices with my meal. But the omelette was a good size. I thought it was interesting that they brought out the food as it was ready, not all at once. Definitely moved things along. The menu that's posted is old and the prices are higher than what are shown here.
First time at this spot because our usual Vietnamese restaurant was going down hill. GREAT SERVICE! GREAT FOOD! ready really fast, staff super friendly, place smell delicious as soon as you walk in!! grilled lemongrass porkchops were fantastic!!
Sub!. Found myself downtown at 11:30 and thought AHA, dare I run into Joyeaux and grab a quick sub! Yes, I dare! There was 5 people ahead of me but I was out in two minutes with my sub. I got the pork and it was delicious.
Magical soup. They got a to die for recipe of soup. I have eaten there many times and every single time I have the first sip of the soup, I have to go " Mmmmmmmm..".
Addictive good soup, try it!
Pho Lover. The first time I tried Pho was at a 24hr, neon-lighted shop on Kingsway 4 years ago. I hated it. I wasn't used to the spice/cilantro. 2 years later, my colleague and I went down to Joyeaux for some Vietnamese food. I ordered the Lemongrass Chicken since it seemed like any other grilled chicken dish. My colleague insisted I take a sip of her Pho Noodle soup. Following a couple of hesistant remarks, I took a spoonful and was mesmerized by the depth. I guess eating Thai/Malay/Mexican food often made my tastebud adjust to that taste. Joyeaux has decent Pho. Can't say it's the best in Vancouver but good enough for lunch. I tried the Spicy Seafood & Crab Meat noodle. It's a little heavier on the side because of the oily crab meat but overall a good soup noodle for a cold, rainy weather. Downside is that the spring roll is not good at all.
Great quick dinner. I just wanted something to take back to my hotel which was different than just a burrito or a burger. I found Joyeaux Cafe, and I am glad I did. I got the Lemongrass fish, and it had great flavor. I really enjoyed the food.
PHO OF JOY!!. Joyeaux cafe is nothing short of amazing! everything i have ever gotten there has always been so tasty and delivered so quick. the service is great and the food is excellent. nothing bad to say about this cafe! great vietnamese food! yummy!
I can't get past #3... best pho I've ever had. Very busy at lunch time so don't go right at noon! The staff have always been courteous and efficient and I've never left disappointed.
Best pho I've had in a long time! The beef brisket pho was very flavourful and delicious. Only thing is they lost our order so we waited a really long time and they forgot my friend's order again after that. Understand it was busy but maybe they need a better system. Will still go back for the awesome food!
Great Pho!. Awesome food and awesome service. I go there once a week and love it.Get there before noon or you'll be waiting outside.
Pho-bulous!. Delicious pho in the downtown area, and like everyone says, it's packed at lunch so be prepared to share a table and make some new friends.
I like the traditional rare beef noodle soup, the vermicelli bowls are great and the dumpling soup is also terrific.
Service is fast like lightning and the menu board is hard to read, you'll need to move fast!
Packed at Lunch, and for good reason. I've walked by this place many times but never thought about, but must admit i was pleasantly surprised after a co-worker suggested this the other day. Had the Seafood Soup (pho). Plenty of noodles, shrimps, dumplings. Perfect on a cold, wet vancouver day. Plus, there are plenty of lunch specials, most under $9. No complaints from any one in my group - everyone's food came out fast, hot, and very little was left behind when we were finished. I'll be back.
Packed for a reason. I went with 8 of my coworkers today for an impromptu lunch here, so we didn't have reservations. we arrived at the restaurant only to find that the one long table was occupied, so the 9 of us split up into two tables after a short wait. for most of us, we were first-timers at the restaurant, so we didn't know the ordering procedure, which was to order and pay at the counter, get a number, and wait for them to bring your food out to you. as we lined up to figure out what to order, i was amazed at the wide selection of offerings. my beef noodle soup arrived piping hot within minutes, and i thoroughly enjoyed my meal. the pace of the entire restaurant is quite quick - from ordering, paying, the arrival of your food, and the clearing of your bowls and plates when you're finished eating. the verdict for all 8 of us? it's probably the best pho in downtown(pricier than the pho in other areas in the Lower Mainland), but we'll definitely be returning since our office is just a few blocks away!
Joyeaux | 551 Howe St. I hit up Joyeaux today. This place tends to get packed so I'd recommend going before or after the 12-1pm rush. Today I had the shrimp wonton noodle soup. It's a safe bet. The broth is not overly salty but there's good depth of flavour. If they use MSG, it wouldn't be much at all. I also enjoy the beef brisket soup here. There's a ton of things on the menu which I have never tried but this place is busy for a reason. The shrimp wonton noodle soup came to $9.40 - excellent value! Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup:
I had a delightful lunch with a co-worker at Joyeaux Cafe today. I stopped coming here a couple years ago because I was able to get tasty pho or lemongrass chicken at Pho Express for a better price and it is a bit closer to my office as well. After lunch I was glad that we made the decision of coming here. The food is good and there are a lot more choices than Pho Express. For a sit-down restaurant in the heart of downtown, there are definitely some good values. However I need to come here more often to see how consistent they are. My Lemongrass Chicken was cooked very nicely- chicken was fresh and moist, and the lemongrass flavour was really coming through. The side dish was just okay – spring roll was a little small and could be a little fresher for my liking, side salad of pickled carrot and radish tasted a bit overdressed, but they weren’t bad and did not affect how good the chicken was. Lemon Grass Chicken on Rice Special @ Joyeaux Cafe My co-worker really enjoyed his “Everything” Beef Pho. I noticed that they only gave out a piece of lime – no chilli, no bean sprout, and no basil. But then if the beef broth is good enough, those condiments are truly insignificant. “Everything” Beef Pho @ Joyeaux Cafe It is a very popular place. We came here right before noon, so we beat the peak lunch traffic and were able to find ourselves a nice little table. But diners come and go rather quickly, so if you are looking for a quick lunch and it shouldn’t be a problem. I love the high ceiling and French cafe influenced decors. The busy and cheerful atmosphere is great, and reminds me some of the cafes that I visited in Europe. They also offer desserts and they seem to have a full liquor license. Overall, I think this place is awesome for meeting up a friend for a quick lunch date. As I saw some diners sharing a plate of chicken wings that looked really yummy, I gotta try those wings next time! Official website: http://www.joyeaux-cafe-restaurant.com/ Map and other reviews: The
The name and outer appearance of Joyeaux Cafe & Restaurant give no indication to the casual passerby of what’s really inside. From the street, with its plain awning and signage, you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking that this place is just another coffee shop that happens to serve meals.
However, once you step inside, the aroma of grilled Vietnamese barbecued meat and deep-fried spring rolls tells you immediately what to expect. As it was my first time there, I was rather discombobulated by the seemingly endless number of options on the menu board. Parts of the board had photos, and others didn’t, so it was a little confusing at first for me to figure out what was offered. I didn’t immediately see any pho, and I didn’t part
This is the place to go if you're looking for the real deal flavorful Vietnamese mamma cooked meal!
Despite the warm summer weather, I was craving a noodle soup and I chose the beef brisket soup ($8). This soup was filled with rice noodles, brisket, carrots, onions, and cilantro. The broth was slightly different from regular pho broth and it had a slight orange hue. It was flavourful and had a hint of spice to it. The punches of flavour from the fresh cilantro made the broth extra tasty. The beef brisket was cut into large chunks and it was so tender it fell apart in your mouth. The large pieces of carrots were soft and the onions added some crunch. This bowl satisfied my noodle craving and it was nice to have something beyond regular pho. I ordered the lemongrass chicken on rice ($8) to go since I needed dinner for later. This also comes with a small salad and a
With so many choices, I decided to stick with my usual favorite, Bun Bo Hue The Bun Bo Hue had plenty of noodles, on top of a variety of pork, and meat slices. The mildly spicy soup had a light broth, faint notes of lemon grass and beef stock, it was very enjoyable.
Joyeaux Cafe- when you hear the name the last thing that comes to mind is delicious Vietnamese treats...instead you are given the impression that perhaps its French. Not until you step inside this unassuming restaurant do you discover that its one of the best Vietnamese places in the downtown core and also very popular amongst downtown workers. I myself am a frequent customer. Whenever its cold, grey and wet (which seems to be most days in Vancouver) I find an excuse to wonder over to Joyeaux Cafe for lunch. If you go during the week at lunch you will find yourself waiting in a line up. However, don't let the line deter you as there is a high turnover rate. Most people come on their lunch break, grab a quick bite to eat, and leave right after. I have tried several dishes on their never-ending menu which is plastered all over the walls and tend to favor the pho and the Korean bbq short ribs. You can't go wrong with any of the wide range of phos served at Joyeaux nor the other not so Vie
Joyeaux Cafe & Restaurant is this amazing Vietnamese restaurant on Howe Street near Pender. Just walking by, you wouldn't expect that this place has some pretty delicious and cheap pho! The interior is very large, which isn't a bad thing at all. Most lunch hours are packed! People actually make reservations to ensure they get a spot. Best to either come earlier or late… or just make a reservation. They have a lot of choices on their menu…. most items are very affordable and under $10. They also have pho / vietnamese noodle soups! If you love to look at photos, they have a few photos on a wall too. Fresh Young Coconut ($4.50) can either come in the whole coconut or takeout in a cup. Flo got her drink in a take out cup since she didn't have to scrape the coconut meat herself. Cold Vietnamese Coffee ($3.50) doesn't have the dripping apparatus, but makes the drink less messy. It is still as strong and delicious as usual. Good for the afternoon caffeine kick. Special Beef Noodle Soup ($
pho-ology :Downtown: Raulie recommended Joyeaux for Vietnamese. Thanks Raulie . I loved Joyeaux. It is the definition of cheap and cheerful. Huge menu, friendly service, and Vietnamese comfort food. If you're in a rush they have an easy order by picture/number menu or if you have time, sit down be served. It has all of my favourites: pho, bun, lemon grass fish, salad rolls, iced coffee, etc. And it's all well made, served in good portions, and easy on the wallet. So easy I let Momma GG pay when we went for an encore. On the first visit, the sister opted for beef noodle soup: She ate it all. Animal. I had the seafood noodle soup: Not one to talk, I ate it all too. A week later we returned, this time with Momma GG , and ordered the shredded crab noodle soup, beef noodle soup, seafood fried rice, fried tofu with black bean sauce, and spring rolls. Every dish was good (except the shredded crab noodle soup...skip it). The waitress thought we ordered too much food. OBVIOUSLY she has no idea
There Is Always Room
+4.5
The menu focuses on Vietnamese food with some all day breakfast thrown in. I do like the option for pancakes whenever I want them
You can tell a lot about a restaurant by some simple signs...are there lineups, are the tables clean, do the staff look you in the eye, etc. But for me, the kicker at Joyeaux Cafe (yes, the owner knows it is spelled wrong, but she believes it has brought

I needed to buy lunch one weekday and luckily for me, both Craig and Edith were in the same boat. Since it was a cold and rainy day, we decided to go for pho and Edith mentioned that she found a pretty good place downtown called Joyeux Cafe and we wouldn’
Despite the fact that my downtown courses were taught literally three doors down from Joyeaux Cafe , I never ventured in, for whatever reason. I guess I never really felt the need, although I am always puzzled by those little cafes that seem to be wildly
