Review Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine - Vancouver

Leah Fletcher
$120 wasted on inedible food. Gave our 5 year old his chicken satay before we sat down for ours and noticed how raw the meat was. Hoping he isn’t sick tonight. Our family is eating cereal for dinner tonight. Tried to find a contact email to let management know but can’t find an address. Unsafe place to order from.

Delicious food and a good wine selection. Will return and bring my wife.

I have to comment on their take-outs. Very well packed and the food is still hot after 5 hours! I love their Thai style ox-tail hot pot, so juicy and the meat is so tender. I have ordered twice before and never disappointed me.

For our family dinner, I ordered: - chicken satay - beef satay - pork satay - beef rendeng curry ALL of the meat in each dish was raw and uncooked. Some of which we only noticed after eating. The food was expensive, uncooked and caused members of our family to be ill from raw food. Will be reporting this restaurant to health authorities.

Roti canai....thats all I need here! Delicious authentic meals here. Things are slighly more oily but done with intention to style of food and flavouring. Besides the roti, would recommend the curry dishes. Many things worth trying and will probably go back to try more. Service was quick to serve here as a takeout.

When Tropika was in Calgary I went there all time cuz I loved their roti. But then it closed down. Ever since I’ve been searching for a place that made it as good as them. Well now I moved to Vancouver and I saw this show up on skip the dishes. So glad I ordered from them. It’s the same! I had no idea there was a tropika in Van! So happy. I ordered take out and the food was delish! Well definitely order from here again and go check out their location for some crispy, flakes roti!!!!

We found 1 shrimp cut into 2 pieces and half of the scallop in the famous sea food fried rice that cost 20 bucks. We did touch the rice in the photo, we were just excavating the seafood from it

Tropika has been around for a long time if i remember correctly. They used to have many locations, but I think they closed some of them over the years. Tropika has been one of my favourites, their dishes are flavourful and good place for families. I always order their chicken satay, prawn cakes, pompano fish, pine apple fried rice and pork chops. I think those are my go to dishes. Their roti is also not bad, but personally not my taste. The restaurant used to get very busy and loud before covid-19. Service is very typical Asian restaurant, ie you have to flag down servers to get things. But food comes out fairly quickly and servers responds very promptly. I hope they don’t close more locations as it’ll be a shame to lose this restaurant from this city’s dining scene.

Went for happy hour with a friend and every dish was pleasant surprise. I had no idea eggplant fries existed?! Also had the papaya salad - not bad. Not the best I've ever had but if someone asked me if it was good, I'd encourage them to give it a try. The eggplant fries were tasty but kind soggy but not because of the fry but because of the nature of eggplant. So if you're okay with that, give it a try! They have some pretty interesting drinks as well with flavours not typically explored. Nice lil place to drop by. You may have to flail your arms around to get them to take your money though.

After looking at different cuisines, we decided on Malaysian! I can’t say I’ve had much Malaysian food in my life. Anyways, we have heard good things about Banana Leaf and picked the location on West Broadway. We came on a Saturday evening around 6pm without reservations, and it was quite busy already.

The environment is nice and staff are friendly. We enjoyed a couple of curries with some roti bread. Roti was very tasty and overall enjoyed our meals.

The food was good and delisious
We ate curry lamb with rice which eas so good and halal ! Which was very suitable to us
The chicken wasnt halal so that we coild not try it
The waitress was nice and polite

The food here is ok. I came here couple times during lunch hour but their service is so so. I called the restaurant trying to reserve a table for 8 and the girl over the phone told me that they can’t because they need to save the table for smaller groups. Then I asked her what if we come in and wait? She said the same thing and told me to call back 6mins later to talk to the manager. Then we went in to the restaurant at 6PM and only 1/3 of the tables were taken but told us to come back after 830. That’s ridiculous.

Dine out dinner-11 courses $40 per person
We have made reservation and didn’t have to wait for long at all. Friendly service, great food and varieties. I have no complaints with any of the dishes. We will come back.

The alluring aromas don’t disappoint.

If you love Malaysian food, your appetite will awaken once you open the door & step into the restaurant.

Service at Broadway location is always excellent. Been there a few times & the quality of the food is consistently amazing.

My recommendations- the eggplant fries, satay & char kway teow.

It's seems like it's been years since visiting this location stepped in for lunch i ordered the Nyonya Calamari,Hot & Sour Soup and Lamb Curry all the dishes were a very hearty portions and delicious, the soup hit the right spot. The service was fantastic i would highly recommend this location
FoodEverywhere
Not the greatest food I’ve had. The food is under seasoned and oily, fishy smell to the seafood. Delivery was quick, and the service was nice. Food not so much.

This so good! Great feelings when I came into this place, with my friends, we both agree this place is worth to go. Affordable prices and sweet services, $20each person. Feel comfortable to eat there

Love coming here to get a quick fix to satisfy a craving. This time we had the 9 course tasting menu for $30 a person for lunch. For the most part it was delicious but for $60 for 2 people we were probably better off ordering A la carte but you get to try a variety of dishes which is great..especially when you can't decide what to order.

The cumin mussels we thought was a tad watered down. My husband was looking forward to the beef rendang and we felt the portion for 2 fell short. Tiger prawns and scallops was plentiful of beans and prawns but only came with 1.5 pieces of scallops. Besides that everything was delicious! Chicken satay skewers were juicy and tender. Sambal green beans were crunchy with a good kick. Caramelized ginger sablefish was soft and tasty. To finish off, deep fried banana with ice cream...YUM!!

Overall great service! There is parking in the back but limited.

○good service
○good food
○family friendly
○reasonable price for portion and quality
○parking in a parkade near the restaurant
○would I go back? Maybe

Came here with 3 others. Food was good and flavorful but overpriced. Presentation was nice. Beef rendang and roti were my faves. Service was ok.

Never disappointed coming here. Food is always great service is good for a place that is always busy. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Passing through, this is a great local spot. Had the 8 course sampler and everything was great. Food was delightfully spicy. Found them on Zomato and agree with their rating.

I got a vegetarian version of Nasi Goreng. The kitchen served a version or the dish with no meat and no veggies, just rice and a bit of green onion. I get that I shouldn't expect much with vegetarian mods, however, the server was quite adamant that any dish could be made vegetarian on that page.

I paid 13.50 for 'fried rice' and 7.50 for a mango/tequilla drink special that was ok.

A month ago I was at VGH so stopped in here to get a Haiwanese chicken rice to go and found it was quite tasty. My last experience was the reason I decided to come back. Unfortunately, my late 9pm dinner this evening resulted in a not so great experience. We ordered a roti cani, eggplant and basil and a pineapple fried rice. The roti cani although not greasy was not fresh and did not taste good. The flavourless fried rice had some cold parts so clearly it was reheated. It was missing the heat and flavour achieved by frying rice in a proper restaurant wok. There was a late night special on the pineapple fried rice where if you ordered it at the restaurant, you could bring an order home. I should have known why there was such a special; the dish was so poorly made that they had to give it away. The $16 dollar rice order that they send you home with fit into a small 3.5x4 inch box - yielding
Shemomedjamo.yvr
The food here is not bad and the service was really great though, I would love to come back and try their fried rice in the pineapple (see pictures of this all over IG).

It’s dine out round 2 for me! Went to Banana Leaf on W Broadway (close to VGH) to try out their Malaysian food. Their dine out menu is different from other restaurants in that it’s 7 courses to share family-style at $20 per person. Banana Leaf W Broadway. Banana Leaf entrance. Since there were 7 of us in the group, we decided that we would only order 2 dine out sets and the rest from the regular menu to share. I’ll start my review with the dine out set. Note that each dish is meant to be shared between 2 people (except for the salads, which are individually served).

Food is delicious here and friendly staff. Family-friendly restaurant. The menu has a wide variety of dishes with high quality photos that will make your mouth water. Lots of flavour in the fried rice dishes. Prices are average.
Joshua Hueller
Definitely a good place to get some Malaysian food. I think this place used to be better when I was a child but still not too bad overall. The pineapple fried rice was a bit bland, and the lamb curry didn't boast too rich a flavour. The other things we had like the chicken satay and Mee Goreng were pretty tasty. The Chicken Satay was very tender and tasted excellent with the peanut sauce. Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for some Malaysian cuisine.

Great staff with a fun vibe and very tasty food.
Even on a busy Saturday night they are overly attentive and explain the specials well. Some of the best Malaysian food I've ever eaten.
Amanda Teo
I am Malaysian and I definitely appreciate the food served at Banana leaf! It is authentic and always a pleasant evening whenever I am there.

Our dining experience was wonderful beginning to end. The host seated us immediately; our server was there promptly and helped us choose, as we were not familiar with the menu; the food, which we shared was absolutely amazing - the staff were attentive and when our bill was presented, we were encouraged to take our time. My guest was very impressed! Thank you.

I am writing this review because of the $2000 giveaway. The food was delicious and the lunch menu very nice. But your restaurant broke three restaurant industry faux pas:
1) When we were waiting to be seated, the concierge was on the phone and she snapped her fingers at a server to seat us. You never snap your fingers at a fellow employee, *especially* in front of the customers
2) When we received the cheque, it had the tips precalculated at the bottom. Indicating that you require a tip is rude.
3) When the server took our cheque and cash, she asked "do you need any change back?". She should have said "I will be right back with your change". Do not make the customer feel like they are having to ask for their change back. It should be assumed that change will be given, not assumed that there will be a tip.

We live very close to the Kits location and we go there often. The appetizer sampler is a good introduction and we really like the pineapple fried rice and the green beans. Good twist on oriental flavours that are a mix of spicy and just plain flavourful!
Michael
This is a fun place with tasty food. The eggplant fries were a great twist on an old classic and very addicting. The nasi goreng was nice and spicy, perfect for a hot day. Bright atmosphere and pleasant and attentive staff as well.
Amanda Pang
This I'd place is more like a modern twist on Malaysian food. Every time I come here, I get really full; each dish is more food than you think.
Djakaputra
Good Concept but not Authentic. It's good but the taste is far from the original. Nasi goreng was too sweet, and awful presentation - at the end is like sticky rice. The mussels was ok but think you can put bit more salt as too plain for me.

Cold Treatment. We walked into the Banana Leaf at 820 West Broadway Vancouver BC and the waiter ignored me and my two companions at the front door. After waiting for approx 10 min he finally comes over and acknowledges us, says he will have to clean a table and walks away. We watch him carry on serving other customers for another 10 min ; a waitress approaches us and says she'll clean a table for us. The waiter sees her getting a table ready and tells her he is taking care of us. When I placed my order I asked if the fish I wanted was spicy hot because I don't like my food too spicy hot, he assured me that it was mild. He was wrong, the fish was really spicy hot (my friends tasted it and agreed it was very hot), would have helped if it came with rice but the restaurant is too cheap for that they charge extra for rice. I watched him make my drink at the bar, he made too much and poured the remainder of my drink into a small glass but did not give it to me, hence I could not taste any alcohol in my drink!!! I will try the place again, however if that waiter is still working there I will refuse his service.

Great Lunch Sampler!. Went with a group of six and tried their lunch sampler. All the dishes were pretty delicious although the curries were a bit bland. But for ~$21 each person the value was pretty good. Service was super fast too!
Clara
Great food but okay service. I tried out the restaurant a week ago and I enjoyed the food. However, the service was terribly slow. The restaurant wasn't full at the time so I was expecting fast service. I lost track waiting for the waitress to come and take our order. I loved the Pad Thai and Singaporean Laksa so hopefully next time it'll be better.

Very unhappy with the customer service. I called a day before to book reservation and left my cell phone number for the reservation. A day later we came in and told them that we had a reservation and the host said "oh your parties already arrive at the back". We came to the back and we didn't see our friends arrive so I told the host that he gave away our table to someone else. He insisted that I book the reservation at the wrong location and that there is only one table reserved under my name and they are the ones reserve it. He told us we didn't reserve a table. I told him that is impossible because I always book at this location and asked to check my telephone under that name. The telephone number was mine number under my name. So the host ended up made mistake and gave away our table. Worst part is he didn't even apologize for the mistake. That is by far the worst customer service I got from that location and I've been going to that same location for over 10 years. Very disappointed in the way we got treated.

Disappearing Reservations. 2 weeks ago I made a reservation for 6 for a work event. A few days later I had to call back to add 2 people to the reservation and was told they had no reservation listed under my name / number. I confirmed this was the 820 West Broadway location, it was, but no reservation so they gave me a new one, no problem. This worried me though, so a few days later I called to confirm, just in case, and was assured that there was a reservation for 6 people. I asked for it to be changed to 8, mentioned I had called previously and already had done that and on that occasion had been told there was no reservation. Again, it was no problem - and again I confirmed that I called the correct location: 820 West Broadway. We show up today - no reservation! So we get crowded around a table for 6. The food and service was excellent, but the reservation issue is clearly something that needs work.

Great food and affordable!!. I visited for the first time and have to say was happily impressed. The price is not an indication of quality at this restaurant. I ordered the BIG LUNCH - Rendang Beef/Roti Canai/Salad. Good portions and great tasting. My server as well as all the other servers had nice smiles and I felt welcomed. The meal came within 10 minutes of my ordering and I was out and back to work with 5 mins to spare. If you work downtown and tired of most of the restaurants who charge WAY too much for flavorless food try this place. I've tried other $10 or under lunch specials and this is now my favorite!

Had an awesome lunch yesterday. We ordered the "perfect lunch" order which is an amazing value. The food was delicious and the service was great. I was in Vancouver for only a few days but would recommend this place to people walking through Fairview.
Cheers

W.Broadway Banana Leaf service. I love Banana Leaf in general and I did love @Broadway as well but today's experience changed my whole view of this restaurant. I have no idea if the Asian server guy with glasses had a bad day or whatsoever. His service was horrible. (But he said He gave me a excellent service, of course)

I had not a satisfying meal service on that day and then while paying for the meal I wanted to tell the server about how i felt and what could make difference for next time (until then, I wanted to come again and that's why I wanted to tell him). As soon as I started, he was pretty much starting argument (Even didn't give me a second to explain him properly) and raised his voice so much that all the diners enjoying meals in the restaurant could hear the unpleasant arguing sound. As for me, I have been in hospitality industry for long. therefore, I could not even imagine server has that kind of attitude towards customers. so, I just told him to stop making noise (Especially it's where he works not me but I was the one worrying other customers ) and left the restaurant very much disappointed.

It was a unforgettably horrible moment. I would rather not having a meal than filling myself with this memory. I will definitely never come back to Banana Leaf on W. Broadway. I even wish I didn't go there today.

Great service and food. Had lunch here and the server was friendly and attentive.

Ordered the Roti Canai, Singapore Laksa and a bowl of Hainan Rice. All very tasty and filling plus a bonus since it was their lunch special.

I came here on the recommendation of the front desk clerk at a nearby hotel. I'm glad I asked.

The canai roti is flaky on the outside. It's the perfect vehicle for the delicious curry sauce accompaniment. The beer selection is nice, though it's disappointing that they don't carry a Malaysian selection. The lamb curry was medium spiced, and the meat is beautifully cooked. There are a few potato chunks in the curry, and I'm happy to say that they aren't there to replace the chunks of lamb, as the lamb is generously portioned.

The service was fast and friendly.

Great meal. Give it a try.

Amazing. We went there for diner after reading some reviews. Everything was delicious, service was fast and professional. New best restaurant for us when in Vancouver.

Good alternative to casual dining. We ordered the appetizer sampler with the roti, satay, papaya salad. It was standard Malaysian/Thai fare toned down for North American palates. A great restaurant to try if you have never tried this type of food before. They also have decent options for vegetarians. However, you might find it average if you're used to other tastes. There are options for what most people are interested in. Overall, the restaurant is relatively clean as well.

I would recommend this restaurant as an alternative to casual dining places like Cactus Club, or Earls.

Bring on the Roti Canai. Is it possible for the food to get better each time you it at a restaurant? This is what happens for me here. I could live on the Roti, but then I'd miss the Mei Goring and Rendang Beef.

Love it!
Brendan.m.shaughnessy
INCREDIBLE!. Where do I start!!! Rendang beef, Malaysian seafood noodle, Obviously the Roti Canai (best in town), The duck was amazing, Pineapple rice looks incredible and TASTES even better. From the atmosphere, the food and staff. It's all just BANG on!
Doctorsamj
One of my favourite restaurants for Malaysian food. Oh my, I generally love their Rendang beef, but on this particular visit, the meat was very tough. A Disappointment for sure, but as this is the exception, I'll definitely be back.

I enjoy coming here for lunch. Service is generally good and the lunch specials are great.

But dinner is another story. Service goes downhill. If you come here in a group of 6 or more there is an automatic tip.

You might want to try Kaya down the street. Sometimes I prefer it to Banana Leaf for food and service.

Delicate Flavours. I ate at Banana Leaf 4 times and I've always been impressed. I ordered a variety of skewers with chili peanut sauce, and various curries. All met my satisfaction and seemed appropriately delicate for the price. Service was reasonable for the business of the restaurant. I recommend the deep fried banana and ice cream for dessert.

Leaf falling?. I dine out on an almost daily basis and Banana Leaf is one of the few restaurants I wanted to take my gf to in the last little while. It was my gf's birthday and our first choice was actually Tropika up by Cambie and 16th but when we went there, the host/ server there was being pretty anal about reservations and told us there is a time limit before the next reservation arrives for the opened table for 2. Really? Sorry if my money isn't good enough for me to sit down and enjoy a meal. So we left and decided on Banana Leaf on Broadway because it has been years since I last ate there.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a Caucasian hostess and were shown to a small table by the entrance separated by a little thin narrow panel. Personally I am not too picky as to where I sit as long as whatever I ordered will fit on the table and both my gf and I can eat comfortably. But I am one of those who like to try out food and always tend to order a bit more (my gf always give me crap for that lol) so I told the server to see if we can move to a bigger table (Hint the fact that there are a few bigger tables that are empty and the restaurant was only 1/3 filled during that time). He looks around and said he will have to ask the hostess. During this time, I gave him my order and he looked at it and he acknowledged that the amount of food I ordered will DEFINITELY not going to fit on the table where we were sitting and perhaps need a bigger table. So he went away and came back and said sorry he talked to the hostess and there were no tables available? SERIOUSLY??? I can clearly see that there are at least 3 empty tables even without turning my head in a 360 degree angle and I know there is a few more behind me. Alright, who am I to argue right? I figured they might do some magic trick to fit all my food onto my table.

I ordered the spicy seafood papaya soup, roti canai, chicken/ lamb/pork skewers, 1/4 of a Hainanese chicken, peppercorn and garlic king prawns, pineapple fried rice, Singapore chilli crab, curry lamb, and steamed mussels.

The soup came first, it has a mild spicy clear seafood taste but nothing to go wow about because maybe I am spoiled by the Lobster tom yam goon at Tropika. Next came the skewers which I find the meat a bit chewy and bland besides the chicken skewers. The steamed mussels followed which I found it pretty tasty and fresh. By the time our Roti Canai came, our table was pretty full and had to juggled a few things around so our side plates don't go tumbling onto our laps (I jokingly said to the waiter, you sure the rest of the food will fit?) The Roti Canai was a bit different, I don't think they cook it thoroughly cause it was like eating a soggy bun once get to the middle. (I whispered to my gf, I hope they will pace themselves so our food will come slow so we will have enough time to finish some of the appies off first otherwise the waiter will be carrying the food besides us while we eat) Well what do you know??? Our next dish was the crab and literally the server can't find a place on our table to put it (I am no asso so I tried my best to help out in minimizing the amount of plates etc so the crab on fit). Well that didn't last long because the Hainanese chicken arrived shortly (ummmm... so I asked the server if they have a little side table to put the chicken? nope.. so once again have to uncomfortable juggle things around) Okay, Hainanese chicken is Hainanese chicken and steamed chicken is steamed chicken, there really is no genius to it. I can assure you it wasn't Hainanese chicken and what I tasted was steamed chicken which was bland and the ginger sauce was just as bad. Sorry to say but it was probably the worse Hainanese chicken I have ever eaten? When the server brought out our fried rice, there was not even a tip of the corner of the table left for it to be placed on so he asked if it was okay to serve it to another customer first and make a new one when we finish some of the dishes off first (well, now we didn't really had a choice now did we? so I okay'ed it). Well after uncomfortably rushing to finished off some of the food off, we finally got the fried rice, curry lamb and prawns to fit. The curry lamb was a bit dry and the curry tasted a bit powdery. The PINEAPPLE fried rice was missing some pineapples? (If it is fresh pineapple fried rice and served on 1/2 a pineapple should it have at least 1/2 a pineapple in the fried rice? All we saw or bits here and there???) As for the garlic king prawns.. it was kinda bland?

Anyways, to sum it all off. The food wasn't as I remembered when I first ate at Banana Leaf or maybe just caught them on the wrong day? As for the waitresses and hostess and servers... okay, when I first walked in.. I felt as if I just walked into Cactus Club or the Keg? Not to be rude or sound racist or sexist or whatever, but why do my gf and I have this strong sense or impression that the waitresses, bartender, server, hostess were kind of selected and Caucasian? Banana Leaf is an Asian restaurant right? I know that the neighbourhood and its diners have a fair amount of white folks but the only Asians serving is 1 waiter and 1 female server who just brings the food out and the rest of the crew were Caucasian? Well there is really nothing wrong with having a mixture of employees, but at least balance it out perhaps? And the only person who seems like on the move all the time and polite is this Asian girl who brings us the food?

Honestly, I always over tip even when I get some crappy service at places like Chinese restaurants where 90% of the time service really doesn't exist, but the dining experience at Banana Leaf this time really went below that. There were no surprises to what I ordered and yet my gf and I have to struggle to try to eat our meal (Banana Leaf, TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES on how to accommodate your customers, use simple logic) It got to the point that we had to bag everything to go home to eat and had to skip dessert. The bill came to about $140 (I think that's what a table of 4 usually spends) but for once I just have to force myself to only tip $12.

In conclusion, will I repeat? I will not say never but there really are better Malaysian restaurants that will be happy to serve my gf and me comfortably and take my money and I am more then happy to give. Also, you guys at Banana Leaf, I think that Asian girl who's bring out the food, she'll be a better waitress then who you have doing the job right now.

food 2.5/5
service 2/5
price 3/5

Close to home.. Although it may be a little pricey, but it is worth it as the dishes served are really tasty and delicious. As a Malaysian myself, I would say that this restaurant serves dishes which is closest you can find to home. thumbs up.

Cravings. I decided to take my little sister here for her birthday and as always Banana Leaf never fails me. we ordered their lamb curry, scallop curry, skewers and a soup. We were having a feast! Both curries were excellent. A little on the pricier side of south east asian food definitely a craving satisfier a must try if you haven't yet

Excellent food, very good service, good location.
I have tried all Banana Leaf in Vancouver and I wish the other ones would learn with this one at Broadway how to keep the standards and make the customers always feel welcome.

Good curry laksa and fresh coconut drink. But it would have been nicer if we were rushed to leave as soon as we finished our food.BThe servers cleaned the table and brought us the bill right away - before we asked for it.

Great Canada Family Meal. We're a family of four enjoyed this great meals with Sambal chili Kang Kong, Curry Lamb, Rendang Beef Murtabail, with Coconut rice and Turmerricric rice. Followed with a serve of Toti Canai. They are spicy and yummy. Only the curry sauce come with Toti Canai is a bit sweet. I'm highly recommended people like spicy food. The serving is good enough for 4 adults.

Top notch food, balanced pricing. This restaurant is amazing.

To begin with, I highly recommend the 'appetizer sampler for 2' if you are hungry. You'll get a great sampler of delicious menu items, including the roti canai and a nice little salad with a perfect (sesame oil based?) sauce.

The lunch specials are at an amazing price. If you order fish, you can be sure it will be cooked well, and not overcooked. Seafood is always fresh, food is seasoned perfectly, and serving sizes are solid. If you're having a gathering, getting a crab will always please the crowd.

I have entertained 5 guests at this place for both dinner and lunch on different occasions. If it's extremely busy, you will want to get appetizers, although I have never had an unpleasant situation here. Ambiance is nice, even if it does get busy sometimes.

Maybe I visited on their off night?. I really wanted to like Banana Leaf. The atmosphere and service were both good. But my dinner partner and I were very disappointed with their pineapple rice which is a signature Malasian dish. It was as bland as plain rice, even the little bit of seafood and meat in it had no flavour at all. This dish is pretty hard to mess up, even if they just added a little pineapple, I would not be writing a bad review! We enjoyed the appetizer platter alright, but the salad ingredients need to be BITE SIZE.. I had to ask for a knife to eat the salad!?

Not as expected. Expensive for the quality given. I agree that the food there is not tasty

Best Malaysian Restaurant. I adore their roti canai! Nice friendly staff and quick service. Always make a reservation as this place is ALWAYS packed! Not surprisingly though because they're truly one of the best Malaysian restaurant in town!

Haven't been here since the half cooked fish incident just right after their renovations. Dropped by earlier this week, the food still tastes great but the portions turned a slightly smaller. Mee goreng was delicious. The rendang beef was flavored but the inside was dry, it was okay. Service was not quick and we sat with our menus closed for a good 10 minutes before a server came to take our order. Overall it was a mediocre dinner: slow service, good food, limited parking at the back. I used to be a regular when they first opened, food was delicious and servers were friendly.

Best Malaysian food in town. Hands down the best Malaysian food I have tried. I have yet to order something on the menu that didn't taste phenomenal. My favourites are the Nasi Goreng, pineapple fired rice, satay skewers, Roti Canai, some type of coconut non-spicy curry, seafood Gulai, Mee Goreng, and Laksa. Come with an empty stomach because you'll leave stuffed. The food is NOT overly greasy which is so refreshing. The servers are nice and they know the menu and have great recommendations. They're attentive and seem like a cohesive team! You should book a reservation in advance and arrive early. It gets really busy during prime hours. I had a reservation for 7 last time I came here and I still had to wait 30 minutes or so before they can clear a table. The food arrived quickly after we ordered. Oh! And they also serve a yummy deep fried Banana split. I don't think it's on the menu but you can ask the server if they have it.

Dinner at Banana Leaf is always a good time . I haven't tried any of there other locations but I will soon in the future. Keep up the good work Banana Leaf!

Pricy but not tasty. Great atmosphere, cute servers, fast services. Fresh ingredients.
However, the pineapple fried rice has no taste, the curry beef is not tasty. A bit disappointed.

The decor was spot on and on fathers day we were seated quickly even though we didn't have a reservation. We ordered spring rolls, chicken satay, abundance of seafood and coconut rice. Although I would have liked a little more chicken on the satay the taste was wonderful. Rolls were full of flavor and not overly greasey. The abundance of seafood had one of the best curries i can remember. Calamari was overcooked and the prawns only slightly. The fish, clams and scallops were perfect. I'll be making the coconut rice at home. Very tasty. Service was great even though our server was very busy. Our water glasses were always full and the bill came promptly. This was my first dinner here but it's most certainly not my last.

The four diamonds of Banana Leaf. What Banana Leaf does well, is what all restaurants should do well if they want to attract customers, and that is 4 things: 1. Attentive and polite staff , 2. High quality food served, 3. Reasonable pricing, and 4. Great atmosphere with comfortable seating. Banana Leaf is one of those restaurants that everyone should visit ... you will not be disappointed!!!

Great food. Tasty food and generous portions. Really enjoyed the roti canai and the Abundance of Seafood in Gulai Sauce. I've been to Malaysia and sometimes I think food here is better than over there.

From start to finish, exquisite!. Started with the Roti and it was unbelievable. Could not wait until the main course. We share boneless chicken in curry, complimented by rice cooked in banana leaf, mi goreng (fantastic, loved it better than pad thai), chicken and beef satay, and finished off with banana fritters for dessert. My son was so full, almost had to roll him out the door! We both agreed this was one of the best restaurants we had ever encountered. Be back again!

Great spot to take parents and visitors. We love Banana Leaf. I've had many a meal there over many years, including once after a truly gruesome job interview. Even that didn't dissuade me from BL. I reckon the tasting menu has to be the best value in Vancouver, judged on quality, taste and quantity. But it's all good, the wines are exceptional and well priced for a restaurant list, and the service is always very good indeed. My mother, who is something of a fan of Malaysian food, became addicted to BL when she visited me, and insisted we take her back three times in the course of a ten day stay. We were happy to oblige.
No Dessert Im Full
Awesome malay food! Gotta start with the chicken skewers with peanut sauce, i would avoid the mango kerabu, unless thats your thing, i didnt find it too appetizing, something about the onions and cilantro. sambal prawns were awesome! great chili paste sauce, served with red and yellow peppers. Mee goreng was very good, so similar to pad thai? but this has an egg noodle that looks like spaghetti and small slices of beef, it also had some chicken, shrimps and tofu, very good. Steamed coconut rice wrapped in the banana leaf wasnt really for me either, i wasnt into the banana taste. Coconut ice cream was really good! And the tiger beers did an excellent job washing it all down. Two thumbs up must try.

Yum..... It's hard to go wrong with Banana Leaf when I have a craving for Malay food.

Nice flavors. The food here was pretty good and portions sizes also. We shared a bunch of dishes (we ordered the equivalent of 1 dish per person) and some roti and steamed rice.

Especially enjoyed the green beans with shrimp, the roti and the mee goreng. Beef rendang was flavorful, and liked the boneless hainese chicken.

Pricing was okay. Worked out to about $22 per person for food (without drinks).

The only downside is that the food is so rich and at times heavy on the oil, that I left feeling a little woozey and heavy. Not sure how often I would go back because of the heaviness, but it was delicious.

Heaven's clouds are coconut ice cream... .From Banana Leaf, yup. Omg if you haven't tried the coconut ice cream, try it. It's the best ice cream I've had in my life. The flavor was sooo amazing, not artificial tasting like a lot of coconut flavored things. And the top was covered in a coconut powder dust, which sounds strange but I can't even describe how amazing it was. The satay is really good, the roti canai is absolutely wonderful! I didn't care for the Nasi Goreng, unfortunately. The service was great, they were super busy but he was never MIA or anything. I would most certainly go back.

Favorite Asian curry! Good every time. Lychee mojitos are simply divine! Warm decor and friendly staff.

Decent Malaysian. Good food but can be a bit inconsistent. I prefer the fairview location to the others but the fourth avenue one is definitely the nicest atmosphere. The roti and sambal green beans are my favs.
Andrew
Food was fantastic and we were well taken care of, all the smiles were authentic and at no time were we ever rushed, best part of it all? food was genuine Malaysian! will be going by again soon :)
Iheartfood
Best Malaysian. Hands down the best Malaysian in town! My favorite dishes are the sayur lemak (yellow curry) and kari lamb, but far and above everything else I'm heavily addicted to their roti canai! There's just something about that curry sauce.... mmmmmm

Haven't been there for a while but I remember enjoying my dinner there all four or so times. Good service and good food. Warning:it can be VERY spicy.

Tasty beef and lamb, affordable for how good it is IMO.

Fruit & Other Flavours = Savoury. I've come to this Banana Leaf twice, both times were pleasant.
The atmosphere is nice, the staff seem to be either hit or miss, the first time I went was with a group of people and the waitress barely looked up from her notepad and had no patience, the second time was with my boytoy and the waiter was nothing short of lovely.
I'm not very familiar with Malaysian food so I can't really compare it on that level, so from an unaware point-of-view, the food was good. I especially like the green beans with prawns, the sauce is quite tasty.
I also got a lychee mojito and it was delicious and refreshing.
For the price, a nice venue. I'd come here for a casual date or a group gathering that is looking for a bit of flavour.

Amazing asian dishes. One of my brother's favourite place to eat, he brought our family here for dinner. Every dish we tried were delicious. I must go back to remember the names of them all! Overrall experience was wonderful! Great service and food! They has some amazing tropical martinis with fresh ingredients! Such a nice treat to start the meal off. The ambiance was definitely going back to the asian ways!

Take out or Dine In. Good value everytime. Quick service, hot food and always tasty. Never a bad experience. The prawns, roti kanai and lamb is just great.

Never disappointed.. I've been here several times for lunch and I always leave happy. It gets very busy at lunch, so you should make reservations. Also, you must try the roti - it's the best here!

I celebrated my birthday here with my close friends and was delightfully surprised by the food. It was very good Malaysian food, and i can definitely say that they're much better than Tropika. All the dishes we ordered were delicious, but my only complaint is for the Hainanese steamed rice which lacked in flavour. We ordered 5 bowls of rice, and they just piled the rice into one larger bowl. I prefer that they had given us the 5 separate bowls instead. Other than that minor detail, overall it was a good dinner!

Good food, not as bad as has been said. Portions are generous and acceptably priced. Service can be slow at times, but I think it's because they are usually busy. Order pickup a half hour ahead and you'll be happy as a clam. The Malay laksa is delicious!

Busy place, food is ok, but the host girl was very rude. One day we went for lunch there, it seas packed. I ask the hostess "teble for 2 pleas" she said, "wait outside!" then I said "ok, no problem, any idea how long it's gonna be?" she said, in a cold tune, "I don't know!" So we turned around and left, may never go back there again.
Gotta Eat
Satay chicken wasn't that great. A bunch of us went to try this place and it wasn't as great as I had hoped. I especially didn't like the Satay chicken, and I love chicken. I also had the pad thai and I didn't think that was that great either.
Purdey
Decent food and their lunch specials are priced Moderately. Service can often be slow.

What Happened?. When I eat here it doesn't remind of me Malaysia, it reminds me more of the Richmond Market. The food is not good, tastes to healthy. The restaurant has decided to let the customer cook the food. The food lacks that certain grittiness when you grind your own spices. The staff no longer speaks Malay, it's Chinese now. I have decided to stop going here. It is no longer Malaysian, it is now an Asian Restaurant.

Banana Leaf is one of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver, and I have visited all their locations. On this occasion, I tried out their Dine Out Vancouver 2015 lunch menu , which included 7 courses. The p apaya and pineapple green asian salad was a refreshing appetizer. It had s hredded fruit salad with cucumber, carrots, and jicama. They are tossed in kerabu fish sauce and sweet and sour dressing, then served with crushed peanuts, sesame seeds, and shallots. I love the Nyonya Calamari rings with sweet chilli sauce. They were very crispy! The roti canai is my regular must-have, and luckily it came part of the Dine out menu.

My girl friend had been raving about this place for quite some time sooo we finally made some time to check it out. Walking into the restaurant made you feel warm and welcomed. We were seated almost immediately (a large family came in moments before we did) and they brought us ice water and tea along with the menu’s. I think the menu deserves a special note of its own… it was a culinary picture book with prices on it. I LOVE that someone who isn’t familiar with Malaysian food [me again lol] knows exactly what they are ordering.

We ordered beef sauteed with some spices and vegetables. Fresh green lettuce on the side. It was very flavorful and I love the crunchy fried wrap.

Upon being seated the waitress provided us with the menus right away and returned a few minutes later to ask if we had any questions. Hurray for attentive service. To start we decided to get the vegetarian version of Nonya’s Lettuce Wrap ($9). It came with four big pieces of lettuce along with a filling made with tofu, spices, jicama, shiitake mushroom, bean sprouts, chives, soy bean sauce, basil and chilli. There was also a dipping sauce on the side as well. I didn’t really taste the heat from the chili in the filling but the basil in it was very aromatic. I love my basil so I liked it quite a bit, but if you’re not big o
MISS VANCOUVER PIGGY
Banana Leaf overall left a sour taste in my mouth. The food is mediocre and the staff needs some training. We ordered more dishes than the tables of four and because of our small table size when there were clearly more suitable tables for us, we spent majority of the time juggling the plates around. ON MY BIRTHDAY? You have got to be kidding me. We only left like a $13.00 tip too because there was no service and we ate so uncomfortably because of the small freaking table. In hindsight, we should not have left a tip.

It has been a while since I last visited "Banana Leaf". I remembered not being impressed over dinner, however today's lunch turned that all around. You can't miss the place driving down West Broadway, a bold green building with bright yellow text. Inside, the restaurant is jammed packed with authenticity. From wooden statutes that faintly resemble humans and giant fanned out fans, to neatly stacked spice racks and etched on voluptuous urns. I liked the Thai paper puppets and the symbols of prosperity that hung off walls. Mix all this with framed art work, tropical music, and servers wearing traditional patterned aprons; you got yourselves quite the theme here. It was busy on a Thursday for lunch. We came at a little past 12pm, and avoided waiting with the other hungry guests. Those who had to stand in the foyer without reservations, that came after us. Already enjoying the atmosphere I was now ready to enjoy the food. I was overwhelmed with options that I knew I would like. If yo

The meal was disappointing and rather flavourless. The Beef Rendang in contrast was rather dull in flavour which surprised me since it’s basically stew.
Mashed Thoughts
My friend W.W. was craving Malaysian food so arranged a dinner out at Banana Leaf on Broadway. Complimentary peanuts where given to us to snack on while we decided on what to order. We decided to chose one dish each and share it family style. We asked the waitress if she had any recommendations and she gave a couple from each category; some we ordered like the noodles and the seafood dish. Roti Canai - $7 - Flaky layered bread served with coconut curry sauce - one of India's great cullinary contributions to Malaysia Of course, we had to order the Roti Canai. That is a given! Char Kuey Teow - $13 - Fried flat rice noodles in sweet chili, soy sauce, egg, bean sprouts, shrimp, fish cakes, and squid. This was only ok. I'd probably try something else next time. Gulai Seafood - $20 - A taste of the ocean; scallops, prawns, fish, mussels, clams, and squid simmered in our spicy Gulai Sauce, turmeric, tamarind, galangal, coconut milk, giner, and lemongrass. I really liked the Gulai Seafood. It

Who loves Malaysian food?! If you do, then you most likely had tried Banana Leaf before. One of the well known, popular Malaysian restaurants in Vancouver. Believe it or not, it was my first time trying Banana Leaf and I'm so glad I did. I don't know what was holding me back from trying before. I went to the Broadway location and I am very pleased with the food and service. I skytrained there so no difficulty with finding parking.. none the less, I would expect parking would be a hassle if you are going to be driving there. I went on a weekday with my friends, Spikyhairlicious & Bee, and considering on a weekday, business was very busy. We had to wait for around 5-10 minutes before there was a table available. Bee ordered the coconut water and her words about their coconut was 'VERY REFRESHING'. If I did not remember wrong, Spikyhairlicious ordered the Singapore Laksa ($10.00). This is a spicy dish with rice noodles with puffy tofu, egg, chicken, squid, fish cake

I have yet to have a Pisang Goreng at Banana Leaf and disliked it. It’s GOOD! I think if they put the plate in the fridge for a bit before they served this particular dessert, it would have been better. But otherwise, no complaints here.

If you live in Vancouver, you’re probably familiar with Banana Leaf, a chain restaurant specializing in Malaysian food. I’m not sure how authentic Banana Leaf is, but to be honest, I have trouble recognizing authenticity in any type of ethnic restaurant (well, except Korean, I guess). All that really matters to me is how the food tastes! I’m not a picky eater (well…kind of.)
Somerville Kitchen
Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine has always been one of my favourite places in the city. I have not visited you in over four years and I miss you. So when an opportunity to lunch with a dearest friend came up, off we went to the original location on Broadway. The place , charming and welcoming as usual, started getting busy very quickly. But we have done our homework online and were ready to order on the spot. And we did (including a faux pas of asking for Mango Lassi in a Malaysian restaurant). They had a mango smoothie... A unique appetizer that is not at all locations is their famous roti, but this one stuffed with a delicious combination of meat and eggs. A real tasty treat. While not Malaysian specifically, it is on the menu and they do it better than any Chinese restaurant I sampled it at. Hunan Chicken, served warm, beautiful sauce, crunchy peanuts and excellent Hunan rice. And one of my favourite dishes there - the Sambal Chilli fried okra, green beans and eggplants with small sh

Menchie’s: This time we got one of the new flavours: Caramel. It was sorta sweet, so we only put a little bit on top. We also had Maple Nut on top of a layer of Vanilla :) And of course, we had to add a whole bunch of yogurt chips! So yummah!
