Review Phnom Penh Restaurant - Vancouver

Yuri Yamaguchi
Exquisite! Everything I’ve had here so far has been excellent and I am eager to eventually try everything on the menu. If you love Asian food and cilantro you won’t be disappointed here. Try to go in a big group, and 100% share so you can try as many things as possible. When I went at 1pm on a Monday, there was a 30 min wait and when I went again, wanting more, on the following Thursday at 11:20 there was no wait.

A completely satisfying meal and the long queue outside the restaurant is proof of how famous and popular they are. The place is bustling with activity. The food is excellent. The Fried rice is really tasty and full of flavors. Loved the Hot Vietnamese coffee. The beef items were well prepared. The squid was also very good.

Went on a Wednesday at 5 PM - had a 15 min wait MAX; the line was definitely longer as it approached dinner time. Never had a more efficient service experience in my life. Food was served within 7 minutes of ordering. Deep-fried chicken wings (#78) were amazing and must-tries. Marinated butter beef (#71) not my personal favourite because of the strength of the sauce, but would recommend trying. Beef luc lac was very good, and is a safe option.

So yummy! We (3 people) ordered large chicken wings, rice noodle soup, butter beef, and BBQ lemongrass chicken on rice. Portions weren’t too big so 4 dishes were adequate for the 3 of us. The chicken wings are PHENOMENAL - sweet & crispy!! The restaurant seems to use a lot of cilantro on most of their dishes, which I love! We went on Monday around 7PM and there was a 15 minute wait. Would return just for the chicken wings!

Always amazing food at Phnom Penh! The chicken wings are to die for, it's a MUST when you come here to eat. I usually get a large order of wings for each person. That's how good these are. The butter beef is another must order here. It's so good on its own. Beef Luc Lac is another must try dish here. You can order it with white rice. This time I tried it with fried rice and it's seriously delicious. Fried rice, with fried egg on top. You have to have to try it. I think everyone knows by now that this place is a must try, whether you're a foodie or not. I've been coming here for years and they never disappoint! Food is always amazing, service is always great, and this time we didn't even have to line up to get a table, which is a huge bonus!!

I really liked the place! Visited on Sunday at lunchtime. The wait was shorter than expected. They have a good system with callback so that you can walk around in Chinatown instead of crowding in the waiting area. The food was excellent! The fried chicken wings and Butter beef (don't let the name fool you - it's actually thin raw beef in marinade) were recommended as their specialty and they were great! And to top that the service was genuinely friendly and helpful. Thank you!

Absolutely delicious food. Our absolute favorite were the Chicken Wings (we liked it without the lemon pepper sauce... Good thing they put that on the side), the Beef Luc Lac and of course their famous Butter Beef!! Will definately be back.

To say Phnom Penh is a staple in the Vancouver restaurant scene is an understatement. Always popular and always pleasing for a reason... The food is so comforting. From the famous chicken wings to the melt-in-your-mouth butter beef to the simplicity of fried rice with Chinese sausage... You can't go wrong. We came by in early December and dine-in was a little less busy than in the past (covid related no doubt) but picked up as we were finishing. Some other recommendations to try here is the Beef Luc Lac (you can either get a small order served with rice and a fried egg or get a large serving by itself and pair it with a full dish of fried rice). The squid here is similar to the addictive chicken wings and is often overlooked but worth the try. If it wasn't so darn cold out, we would have picked up one of their tasty moo shakes.

They don't take reservations, also after we checked in the list, we kinda have to stay close to the restaurant. They don't have phone calling system, like notify customers "You are 2nd in line" or "Your table is ready. Please come back ..blah blah blah.." something like that. It's way too outdated...Not like nowadays restaurants.<br/>Taste is good. Everyone says their chicken wings is the best! Also Butter beef is very good too! Just waiting time is way too long and waiting system is super bad...

After we were seated and ordered our food for some reason everyone who was seated after us had gotten their food already. We were waiting for about 45 mins or so until I had to ask one of the server about our orders which was only rice, chicken wings, and hot and sour soup with chicken. They had realized that they had forgotten about it and about two mins later two of our order had finally came out. We were told that the soup will be done in 6 mins and it was actually less then 6 mins, and it tastes as if it was quickly made since the chicken didn't look quite cooked. The hot and sour soup was sweet instead of sour which was disappointing. Not sure why this place is so hype, but the chicken wings were pretty decent though!

Excellent if you’re not looking for a fancy place, yet your focus is awesome food at a reasonable price. The Butter Beef and the Chicken Wings were outstanding choices and everything tasted great. Service was ok and restaurant could have been cleaner, that’s the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

Holy. Mother. Of God. This place is a must if you're in Vancouver and are adventurous and like strong flavours. Southeast Asian food at it's best. Even Anthony Bourdain thinks so. Every time I'm here, I have to get the deep-fried frog legs and the marinated butter beef. The hot and sour soup is also a go to. There's always a wait so try to get a reservation beforehand. I've known people who have reservations who have still had to wait - yes this place is just that good. PLEASE GO!!

It's a bit overhyped. Waited about 40min-1hr for seating. Chicken wings were delicious and the best part of this place. Tried Marinated butter beef. Love the sauce but I don't think it's worth the money...it's similar to beef sashimi in a way. Beef Luc Lac is very tasty but I think it's overpriced for what it's worth. I'd go back for the chicken wings.

I really enjoy Phnom Penh, but the long waits deter me from coming more often.<br/><br/>At 4pm, we took one of the last tables and I remember people were starting to line up around 5pm already. Beef luc lac: One of the classic dishes at Phnom Penh! The beef was very saucy, and delicious. It was slightly sweet, garlicky, and oniony. The beef luc lac was also accompanied with a fried egg, rice, and some fresh greens. With everything combined, you are sure to be full and satisfied.

Amazing quality of hospitality and highly recommend the scrumptious beef balls noodle soup and the hot and sour soup with fish was comforting and delicious! Loved it!
Megan
Go for the chicken wings, butter beef and beef luc lac...the perfect trio! Line ups are usually quite long and they don't take reservations for parties under 8 people. Well worth the wait!

We’ve been to this restaurant for twice so far, both on weekend. That means we had been waiting for two hours last time for Saturday dinner. The kids were moaning and the husband was complaining....but the food here are always great. We love the raw beef dish and the chicken wings.

This is definitely a hot spot in Vancouver. We went around 630pm and got in around an hour and a half later. Butter beef was definitely popular and definitely was worth it. As was their Phnom Penh wings. Servers were very prompt. Food didn't take long either. Their grass jelly ice drink was good as well. I don't think any servers really spoke Cambodian and to call themselves "Phnom Penh" was ironic but the other main dishes were more Vietnamese if anything. Coming from someone who has a Cambodian mother I can say that only a few dishes were Cambodian inspired. I'd come again if the wait wasn't that long... definitely would recommend trying it- Don't forget reservations!

this place is very crowded. and has a nearly perfect zomato rating. unfortunately, we don't get a pleasant experience here. our family came to seven, and had to wait for the waiting list which he said was half an hour but we waited almost an hour. even some of us had to stand because of the limited seating in the waiting area. because we are Muslims, the halal food recommendations that we order are not very good compared to the length of time we have to wait for the queue. and it is rather difficult to also communicate English with the servant. we even ordered not to mention the menu name but the number in the menu was ordered to them so that they understood what we wanted to order. sorry for the photo only 1 because I am lowbat
Y2eats
Yeah. The wings are so good. Stopped by in the afternoon to beat the crowds and for a quick snack. Pass on the spring rolls....stick to the wings.

I personally think that this is one of the best restaurants in Vancouver. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's family owned, it's consistent, it's really good food and the portions are so so nice. I would definitely recommend coming here with family as you can order more things, rather than just a date.

Video Review on my youtube channel: vancity food crew phnom penh<br/>.<br/>By now everyone knows about how awesome Phnom Penh is. Its all about their butter beef and chicken wings. The butter beef is essentially an asian carpaccio, and the wings are lightly battered and fried to perfection with a lime sauce. However, nothing else on the menu has ever really been as good as these two appetizers. I don't like the beef luc lac. Its too strong in flavour and sauciness. We tried some other stuff, the lemongrass chicken is very basic and lacking and the beef vermicelli dish was uninspired, with an overpowering amount of onion. Yes, the butter beef and chicken wings are to die for. But nothing else really is. Go early to avoid a 1 hour wait<br/>

Never fails to satisfy my craving. Always butter beef and their chicken wings. Our favourite go to. It’s always pack here. We went on a weekday at 2pm and we still had to wait for a table. Worth the wait though.

There's a reason why Anthony Bourdain loves this place and why the ratings are so high! BELIEVE the hype yall - there is absolutely NO other restaurant where you can find the holy trifecta of BUTTER BEEF, BEEF LUC LAC, AND THE WORLD FAMOUS CHICKEN WINGZ!!! if you have a friend visiting out of town, YOU HAVE TO take them to this restaurant! Of course, the line ups are a biT much but expected due to the high POPULARITY of dis place

Best restaurant in Vancouver!!! If you love tasty asian food this is definitely the place to go. You will have to wait about 30-60 mins to be seated as there’s always a long line but it’s definitely worth it!!! We went on a Monday around 2pm and the place is still packed. They have the yummiest soup I have ever had in my entire life!! The beef pastrami looking meal on their photo is extraordinary it’s something you will never have anywhere else. I look forward to coming back to Vancouver and will definitely definitely go back to this piece of taste bud heaven!

This place deserves all of its praises and awards. Food was delicious! ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE BUTTER BEEF! Would definitely eat here every week if I lived in the province. The mango moo shake I got was refreshing and sweet.

[4.5/5] We didn't miss any of the signature dishes here today. The fried chicken wings, the marinated butter beef, the beef Luc Lac, the hot & sour soup, the dry egg noodles, and the green papaya salad. For many years of living in Vancouver, those dishes still taste amazing every single time. However, I would recommend getting the hot & sour soup with fish, not with prawns which are easily overcooked, and it was exactly the case today.
Kathy
food was delicious, and had some of the best chicken wings ever. the butter beef was also amazing, it just melts in your mouth. waiters were also nice. must go back soon

Have to try: Fried chicken wings, Butter Beef, Beef Luc Lac with egg and fried oyster omelette<br/><br/>Skip the line If you have a party of 8 or more<br/><br/>#chinatownfood

Definitely need to try the Bo Luc Lac, Butter Beef, and Fried Chicken! Super delicious! I also enjoyed the 9 Layered Cake and the Black Rice Coconut Dessert. Favourite restaurant ever!
Ms Phoodie
heard about this hidden gem all the way from edmonton and its a must try! ordered two orders of the marinated butter beef and chicken wings. definitely lives up to their reputation! those dishes won’t disappoint your stomach or tastebuds. tried their beef lac lac on rice with a fried egg and that was amazing as well! will definitely be back to eat some more

This restaurant is very popular and has an almost perpetual lineup, no matter what time you go. <br/><br/>They served an extensive menu that features Cambodian and Vietnamese flavours and dishes.<br/><br/>Their deep fried chicken wings are legendary! <br/><br/>Certainly worth going to once or twice for locals and visitors alike - basic ambience and probably not the cleanest place you have ever been.<br/>

Meal: Filet beef luc lac with egg, Chicken wings large, BBQ lemongrass chicken with shredded pork and ham, butter beef. . Service:  Not bad, they're hella efficient and know what their popular dishes are. Easy to ask for recommendations, they'll even upsell you. Atmosphere: Loud, packed, you'll probably wait in line for a table.

Super B amazing!! Can't wait to go back for more. My friend bought take out from here for us and it’s always their number one stop when they’re in the area. I love their butter beef, wings, rice dish.. everything!
Vanfoodiebuzz
Great experience every time. The wings are probably the most popular item on the menu and they are certainly a must. Hands down some of the best wings I've ever eaten. I ordered a rice dish (forgot what it was called though) and it tastes great as well.

Phnom Penh Restaurant is located on E Georgia St. , which is nearby the Chinatown area Vancouver. It has many excellent reviews from customers online. I’ve just been there once with my boyfriend and his coworkers. We’ve been there around dinner time between 6pm and 6:30pm. The restaurant was super busy. It was all full inside. There was a huge lineup to the outside the restaurant. We had to wait for a table outside the restaurant about a half hour and 45 minutes. It has Chinese style decorations inside the restaurant, which makes people feeling warm. After we got a table, we quickly sat down and began to order our food. The servers were nice, friendly and helpful. We ordered one of the most popular dishes Chicken Wings to share. Besides that, we each had our own food to order. I had Phnom Penh Stew Beef Rice Noodle and my boyfriend had BBQ Lemongrass Pork Chops with Shredded Pork and Ham on Rice. His friends had something different from us too. The food came fast, fresh and well cooked. The taste of the food was very delicious. It was my favorite Vietnamese food place ever. Strongly recommend people to try the food there.

Overall: This place disappointed us, and I'm not even a tough 'food critic', considering I do take context into consideration. And we typically enjoy Vietnamese food! With that said, it was a 20 minute wait for a full restaurant on a Tuesday at 3pm, mid September!! <br/><br/>Food: Out of the 4 dishes ordered, one was good (the spicy sweet potatoes chicken hotpot stew - huge portion, easily sharable when hungry!). The rest, not tasty by any means.<br/>The pho (first item on menu) had these mystery (rubbery tasting) meat balls that looked like a Bologne version of what meat balls would be. And the beef had more fat/tendon than actual meat, although I understand it is traditionally eaten that way and liked by many. The chicken wings (I think #78) were okay, seasoning was overpowering (salty/garlicky) for a person who loves hot/spicy food (which btw-when we googled the week prior "best wings in Vancouver", this place came up so we had to try it!). The pork spare ribs had tiny bits of bone spread in the batter so you kept having to spit out the bone bits, and they did not have much meat on them (#81).<br/><br/>The service: I don't know if it was an off day or they were short staffed, but it was hard to even get the hostess' attention to give our names down because she was working the floor. Our servers mixed up our food orders, so two of us were eating the wrong dish. We also got an uncleaned plate (which when pointed it out, we got a new one; but with no apologies as if we inconvenienced them). Washrooms (male and female) were unkept; wet floors and sink.

I'd have to say I'm a little disappointed here. I ordered the beef pho special and it was not what I expected. The broth had more of an onion flavor and less beefy like other pho places. The noodles broke very easily. I did however enjoy their lemon chicken wings which were cripsy with garlic. The wait time was about 30 - 45 mins so be prepared to wait.
Scrum Diddly Umptious
Their chicken wings and butter beef are my all time favourite. There is almost always a wait to get in, but it is worth it. The service isn't anything fancy, but their food is everything. You have to try it.

I crave food in this place often! Butter beef is super tender and the wings! Those wings! Both best served with steaming hot rice. Super busy during lunch and dinner hours, but get there early and no problem getting a table. If you're there on your own (no shame dining alone) or with a friend or two, share one of the big tables! You'll get seated faster. If this place ever closes, Chinatown is over for me! LOL!

Not as good as I expected<br/><br/>Having read so many good reviews, and also strongly recommended by some of our friends, we decided to place a visit on a Friday afternoon - a table for two.<br/><br/>We had been waiting for almost an hour to be seated (we already knew that this restaurant was very busy all the time so, could not complain.....).<br/><br/>We expected to have a very enjoyable lunch, because we had waited for that long.....<br/><br/>We ordered : Phnom Penh Dry 2 kinds of Noodles, soup aside; Phnom Penh Rice Noodles in Soup; and an order of Phnom Penh Deep-fried Chicken Wings.<br/><br/>The DF Chicken Wings were good.  However, the meat & other ingredients in the 2 bowls of noodles were not very good, not very tasty,  The soup base was just ok.   A bit disappointed!<br/><br/>It may not be worthwhile for us to visit this restaurant again.

When we got here around 7 PM on a Sunday night, there was surprisingly no one waiting outside. Probably because it was really cold with snow on the roads. There were two of us and we probably had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. We actually came from a different dinner beforehand, so we didn’t order too much. We got the two dishes everyone recommends when coming here, which are the deep fried chicken wings, as well as the butter beef.

At first, i didn't expect much about this restaurant. But then when i came in, the line was very long and there were a lot of customers inside. We waited for about 15-20 mins until they called my name then we seated. They gave hot chinese tea and water for free. They have a lot of menu lists, from appetizer to dessert. I tried their famous crispy chicken wings with garlic flavors which was indeed their must try item, then we also ordered the beef vermicelli which also good and has a big portion, lemongrass pork chop which tender and juicy, and garlic kai lan which also nice and the kai lan itself very big and juicy as well. We also order rice on the side. This restaurant has numerous award since 1990s until 2017, they recognizable for a reason because they serve delicious food.

food was so yummy!! but all the dishes seem dirty a bit ...:( BUT!! I loved the food. haha.<br/>I might go again to try other dishes. and see how I like the most in this restaurant. Don't expect good service tho. lol

• pay street parking<br/>• no reservations, first come, first serve only<br/>• this place is soooo busy day, evening and night, come early and make sure your party is complete and ready to sit<br/>• Food, everything and I mean everything is sooooo good!!! Frog legs, chicken wings are the bomb!!! Garlicky oohhh!<br/>The only bad thing is that unfortunately they use MSG in all their dishes. I'm sensitive to it and get migraines so I can tell. I asked if they can eliminate this, they can't :(<br/>• I'll still go anytime!

Phnom Penh has long been on my to-eat list as recommended by many people in Vancouver.  I finally got a chance to visit on a Friday afternoon around 2pm to check it out.  I wasn't expecting 4 groups of people to be in front of me at that time!  The place was busy with people who were beginning to clear out, presumably from the 1pm lunch rush or something.  Either way it took us about 20 minutes to be seated.  Service was overall really friendly.<br/><br/>I ended up settling for their pork dry egg noodles, kai lan, and their famous deep fried chicken wings.  The pork dry egg noodles were good - tons of garnish which I unfortunately don't enjoy but it's just my personal preference.  I can see a lot of people liking the dish.  Kai lan was garlicy which I really enjoyed.  It wasn't anything to special, but a solid choice.  The highlight as everyone else says are the chicken wings.  I don't even have words to describe how the texture and flavour combines in your mouth to create a foodgasm when biting into the chicken wings for the first time.  I really appreciated that I ordered a large sized dish for it.  I have some left over to eat tomorrow and I can't wait.  The garlic is great too.  I didn't like the sauce it comes with unfortunately.<br/><br/>Portion sizes were adequate and reasonable.  Service was kinda slow when the place got less busy as they cleared tables, however they answered any questions I had reasonably.  All in all, I love this place.  Highly recommended.

Walked to restaurant from downtown, passed some bad districts before reaching. Full of people and noisy, expect long queue. Food is not authentic Vietnamese. The wraps are so bland inedible. We didn't receive good service so we didn't intend to tip, but the cashier asked for tip after we paid for our meal. Definitely can find better Vietnamese food with better experience at other place.
Natalie
I've been here a few times over the last few years and there's never been a time where I haven't had to wait. This time wasn't bad at all. We waited about 15 minutes for a table after we had our name taken down. It was a little difficult to get a hold of a server to get our names down at first though. I think this place only takes reservations for large groups, so be prepared to wait. <br/><br/>There were two of us so we ended up sharing a large table with two other groups. Even though this place was busy, service was pretty good once we were seated. We were quick to get tea, have our order taken, and food came fast.<br/><br/>We ordered the fried chicken wings, oyster pancake, and two types of dried noodle with soup on the side. If you've never tried their chicken before, you should. Crispy on the outside, tender chicken on the inside, and full of flavour. Oyster pancake was pretty good too. Kind of oily, but the sauce with it was a little bit vinegary so it helped. The dry noodles weren't too salty, which made it good with the other food since they were quite flavourful. <br/><br/>There are tons of options on their menu. And I'll likely be back to try more! Definitely a place worth trying.
YM_Bape
I know the line up is a pain but they try to accommodate you to the most possible way. If u have the most whitest friend and never had anything delicious and exotic, then this is the place to be! From the crispy oyster pancake with the spicy vinegary dip to the famous granma's chicken wings and Cambodian soups with pineapples! Truly authentic! The luc lac beef and butter beef is a must to order!<br/>

This place is know for a wait to get in, and I get it it. This place is great. We tried the com bo luc lac, which was a great intro to Phom Penh. I am eager to go back and try some other dishes.

March 15, 2017 · by ThatShanghaiGirl · I don’t know why it took me so long to visit this place, but I have to say my built up excitement wasn’t exactly fulfilled. Infamous for their butter beef and luc luc but the food here just didn’t

First things first, don't expect good service here. It's a typical asian restaurant that is fast paced and chaotic during rush hours. Wait times can go up to an hour sometimes. With that being said, that's because everyone wants to come here for their amazing food! Highly recommend the chicken wings and their butter beef. Definitely can't get these anywhere else that would be nearly as good.
Angel Liu
The service here is super fast and good. Everyone is nice and quite speedy. We had a estimated 30 min wait but it only took about 15. We also shared a table with some strangers which was fine by us! I got the beef stew pho, which overall was super comforting w generous pieces of very tender beef. BUT the vermicelli was overcooked in my opinion, it broke with the gentlest chopstick touch. The beansprouts came cooked which was cool, and the spice sauce, Ho! That is SPICY! I almost cried  . More of a broth, less of a stew. Big portions.
Girllovesfood
We're obviously all addicted to the same 3 dishes : chicken wings, butter beef , and bo luc lac with egg (sub the plain rice for fried rice,- trust me) your welcome :)
Leslie Huang
Definitely a hole in the wall restaurant (it's honestly pretty dumpy). Went here because all my friends wanted to go and they always rave about the food. The food has so much MSG it gives me migraines, sure that makes it authentic but it doesn't make it taste good. The beef was sooo salty and the meat seemed low quality just masked by the sauce. The wings like everything else has flakes of MSG on it, lacks real flavor aside from the garlic- pretty generic greasy fried wings. Service is super terrible, servers know they arent going to get much tips from the cheap clientele I guess? Never refilled waters and were extremely absent minded. Really not sure why people bandwagon so hard....
Xin
It was totally packed at 12pm on Saturday. Ordered the popular garlic chicken wings and shrimp salad rolls. The chicken wings are well worth a try. The roll was just ordinary, no better than the ones in other Vietnamese places.
Cynthia Glowacka
Great place to eat! Delicious wings!!<br/>Only suggestion would be to create a better system for the waiting list.. it can get a bit hectic sometimes..
Teresa Tran
Having grown up eating Phnom Penh, my family and I  endured the worst experience. We fully understand its extremely busy and glad to wait for good food. They nicely gave us a table which was limited to 30 mins of service because there was a reservation in the next half hour. In the time we were seated and eating, we were rushed to finish up and leave multiple times even though our time was not up. To top it off, 15 mins into being seated they stopped letting us take any more orders. This dinner costed us $260 in merely 30 mins. Didn't even care for the food because we were treated like this. NEVER coming back, end of story.

○ok service<br/>○known for their chicken wings (must be the MSG that makes it so addicting)/ other dishes were ok (Vietnamese coffee sucked)<br/>○no PHO (Vietnamese Noodle soup) If that's what you crave<br/>○family friendly<br/>○Pricey compared to other Vietnamese restaurants<br/>○make reservations if you can at peak times otherwise you'll wait a while<br/>○not many parking space on the streets<br/>○reservation for 6pp + only. Be prepared to wait in line and make sure u put your name on a waiting list<br/>○would I go back? Yes, for their wings and take out only

I always enjoy coming here. Not for their service or ridiculous line ups, but strictly for their food!!! their chicken wings.. YUM. hot and sour soup with prawns.. YUM. beef loklak on rice YUM. butter beef. YUM
Inez Karina Tanu
Chicken wings were AMAZING. The portion was huge. I really like the butter beef too! Ordered the butter garlic frog legs too, it has the same sauce and spices as the chicken wings too but not as good. Wait time is really long, however you can reserve for large groups.

Phnom Penh is located at Chinatown on George Street. A restaurant has line up all the time. It is well famous to any Vancouver Food Bloggers, and it is a place which a tourist should go. <br/><br/>Waiting time is approximately 15-45 minutes, but it is worth to wait. <br/><br/>Food: 5/5<br/>Services: 5/5<br/><br/>Special Features: Butter Beef and Chicken Wings
Ah
There’s a reason why the lines are always out the door, and a brag wall situated in front of the doorway. From awards dating from 2009, known for their chicken wings and recommended by many Vancouverites; this has been on my list since I started my foodie journey. Boy, was I excited to finally get to cross this off.<br/><br/>For a table of two grumbling tummies and an estimated 45 minute wait- I was SO pumped. The wait ended up only being 15 minutes, 15 grueling minutes might I add. The aroma of the restaurant, seeing as every table had an order of chicken wings made us drool from a distance.<br/><br/>But once we were seated, wait for food was only 10 minutes, came out hot and fresh - really like 15 minutes for all threedishes to arrive. <br/><br/>Service overall was pretty scattered. We didn’t have a designated server, drinks came late, no one checked in on us, busy restaurant led to someone spilling tea under our table, and once we looked like we cleared our plates they were very prompt to rush us out.<br/><br/>But on to the food,<br/>We ordered<br/>Sauteed Water Spinach (Tong Choy) $12.95<br/>35. Beef Luc Lac on rice with an Egg $10.95<br/>78. Phnom Penh Deep Fried Chicken Wing (L)$13.50<br/><br/>Yup, lives up to the hype. Every dish was delicious and well executed. You honestly can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.<br/> Though I only got the chance to try 3 dishes, the wait along with the mediocre service can be overlooked with how awesome the food is.<br/>The dry noodles and fish cake are next on my list!<br/><br/>
It's Me Chuck
<br/><br/>This place is known for their Butter Beef, Beef Luc Lac and Fried Chicken wings and much more. You really have to go here and try it for yourself. Eating in a big group is a benefit because you could really sample one of everything. <br/>I recommend that you go to this place with someone who has already eaten here. This is beneficial because they have a lot on their menu and the majority of it is extremely good.<br/><br/>Besides the food, the customer service needs a lot of improvement. I've been here on many occasions and some days your are rushed to eat and some days you are neglected. This experience normally happens when the place gets really busy, which is almost all the time. Plan ahead and expect to wait for a long while, unless you have reservations.

Way before the food blogging craze, I first heard of Phnom Penh from a friend. To date, Phnom Penh is probably one of the most-talked about restaurants in Greater Vancouver for
Mejp396
I loved their chicken wings so much when I first tried them so I decided to come back once more. However, when I came back, I felt like it's not the same wings anymore. I don't know why, but it's still good just not as good when I tried it the very first time.
Timwongster
One of my favorite restaurants to eat at in vancouver. The proportion sizes are smaller than some of the other vietnamese places I've been to, but their great tasting dishes makes up for that. Their legendary wings are a must try for sure. The food here is well priced but there is always a line up for seating. Will be coming back at some point for sure.

Dishes ordered:<br/>-Frogs legs: tasted ok. The lemon pepper dip was made from...supermarket bottled lemon juice (yeh you know that weird taste I'm referring to). I would've thought a venue of such success would at least use fresh lemons. Strange. <br/><br/>-Dry Seafood noodles aka Hu Tieu Kho: when this dish arrived I was shocked how much garlic was in it. I had a flu at the time and my nose was compromised but I was still almost paralysed by the garlic. It was just simply ridiculous how much was in my bowl; I'm guessing about 2 whole cloves minced in. I'm not sure what happened in the kitchen. Garlic isn't meant to be a feature of this dish. <br/><br/>-Com Bo Luc Lac: sorry again this tasted like cheap Chinese takeaway stir-fry. The beef in this dish is meant to be cubes of tender fillet flame grilled or flash fried and the meat's flavour allowed to compliment the sauce. PP's dish was tiny strips of meat drowned in sauce. BAD. <br/><br/>-Drink was JackFruit Smoothie. WAY too much sugar to the point where it was so evident they had added syrup. Good jackfruit does not require sweetening as its almost sickly sweet already. <br/><br/>I'm one of the few dissenting reviewers here going against all the positive reviews. I'm Vietnamese and have eaten Vietnamese from mum, aunty, grandma, and all over Vietnam. I know how it should be and these dishes all missed the mark terribly. PP has such high reviews here though I think we just went on a bad day or something because there is no way so many people can think the food we had was terrific.

I have been to Vancouver for so long, but it was my first time to try this Vietnamese and Cambodian restaurant. Everybody said that it was good and there was always a lineup every day. <br/><br/>It happened that I was in the same neighbourhood in the late afternoon, so my boyfriend and I dropped by this restaurant and gave it a try hoping there was no line up. When we opened the door, many people were waiting at the foyer. We gave our name to a server. The server asked if any of the customers would like to share a big table with others. My boyfriend and I said sure! We only wanted to eat and try the food, so we did not really care about where we sat. In the end, three couples including us sat at a big round table. Each pair of us got a letter such as E, B, and C. That means the food and bills would go to the right letters and that was how we paid. <br/><br/>We ordered the butter beef, deep fried chicken wings (that every single customer almost ordered and loved to eat), Phnom Penh dried rice noodles and Phnom Penh rice noodles in soup. Everything tasted fabulous! I would love to eat more, but I was so full! <br/><br/>One of my friends worked here as a server. He told me that the owner of this restaurant is Taiwanese, but they make really good Vietnamese food. If I will be in this neighbourhood again, I would definitely love to come back to this restaurant and try something else such as deep fried prawns and fried rice. The food here might be slightly more expensive than the Vietnamese food out there, but I think it is worth it. <br/><br/>Just a recommendation. If you don't want to wait a long period of time and if you only care about the food here, share a table with others.

This place didn't really live up to the hype the first time I went a few years ago. Since then I haven't gone back. I decided to give it another whirl with a friend and ended up ordering their version of pho and the Bot Chien. The pho was had tons of noodles, decent amount of meat, and the broth was tasty. I was looking forward more to the Bot Chien, which seems to be rare in this city. This place did deliver on the dish and I was quite happy (see picture). Recommend this dish.

The food is always awesome, but the service is not really good. The food comes quick but we had to wait so long for refill tea, salt and napkins we asked. Besides a male server forced us to pay more tips, just saying " it has to be more than 10%." Really!?!? If it's true there is another proper way to ask, isn't it?

ahhhh ... what can i say about this place that hasn't already been said?<br/><br/>the place to go when you crave ...<br/>chicken wings<br/>raw butter beef<br/>and my absoulte favourite Beef Luc Lac on Rice!<br/><br/>too busy (always 30 ~ 60 min line up during normal dinner hour)<br/>cambodian food should be this expensive but what i can say ... this is the best

She told me go for the crispy garlic wings and stay for the butter beef – and that’s exactly what I did. I went with some family I have in Vancouver and got there early as I thought I’d be smart and beat the rush. There was no such luck, it was packed with a line out the door, our wait was 25 minutes and by the time we sat down the wait was 45.

Good portions, above average service and everything had a very distinct, colorful taste. Will definitely be back again in the future! I recommend the chicken wings and the luk lak beef.

Have been here a couple of times hoping to find authentic/good Vietnamese, but unfortunately haven't been too impressed. The banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake) was disappointing, it was probably overcooked and came out oilier than expected with a firmer crust than it should have, and hence losing the lovely taste/texture of the rice batter. I came back a second time to try their signature dishes, the butter beef which wasn't bad, and also the chicken wings, which whilst nice, wasn't the best I've had. Overall, it was average.
ForTheLoveofFood
This is one of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver! The wings! Butter beef, squid are all addicting. My friends and I come here often, and we know exactly what we want to order. Out of town cousins visit, and we take them here.
Kimboslice
I literally love this restaurant so much. If you've never been there and you're reading this, you better go tomorrow! You must get their Beef Luc Lac rice, Spring Rolls and their specialty Chicken Wings!! Theres always a huge lineup so I would suggest going around 630pm!
Gloria Chui
Always love this place. But never never would go back to dine in. Always order take out instead due to the constant line up. Even friends from Asia said it's more authentic then what they can get back home. It's a must try when friends are visiting from out of town.

If you haven't eaten here, stop reading and go now (but expect to wait because it's always packed)! <br/><br/>Chicken wings, butter beef, dry noodles, beef luc lac, trieu chau fried rice, phnom penh stew, lychee moo moo shake. Order it all, enjoy.

Best Chicken Wings on the planet!! My first stop every time I come home for a visit!! I really don't need to say anything because everyone who eats here can agree, the food rocks!!

This place is so good! Go here not indochine (the sister restaurant) PP had better value and it's better too. But remember to reserve a table in advance or else just go to indochine pp's sister restaurant where you will have to spend more money and get less food, and GET THE WINGS

Been here before and only just found it again. Huge bowls of soup for not many dollars, and amazing flavors. Can recommend the Phnom Penh stew with egg noodles.
Naoki_art
What is there to say that hasn't already been said? Nothing. The chicken wings, squid, frogs legs are as tasty and addictive as people say. The dry noodles have been bringing me back for over 20 years. The butter beef is fresh and so flavourful and aromatic. Incredible how quickly they turn over and serve with how busy it always is.

Go-to orders: chicken wings, butter beef, lac luc beef, fried rice with Chinese sausage (among other things).<br/><br/>Every time I go to Phnom Penh, I order way more than it is physically possible for me and my companions to eat, but I can't seem to help myself. Something about Phnom Penh really hits the spot, like I grew up eating it (even though I definitely did not eat raw beef growing up).

What better way to close out the year than enjoy a meal at Phnom Penh?<br/><br/>This restaurant is so popular that it’s always busy. Knowing that, we arrived when they first opened (10am). By 11am, there was already a line up of diners waiting for an empty table.<br/><br/>Is there anything as gorgeous as a big plate of Butter Beef?<br/><br/>Before I answer that question, here’s the Steamed Rice Rolls.<br/><br/>Now the reason that most people come here is for the Deep-Fried Chicken Wings… and they’re spectacular!<br/><br/>Now, going back to my original question… is there anything as gorgeous as a big plate of Butter Beef? How about an XL order of Luc Lac Beef? Normally, I order #35 which has a smaller serving of Luc Lac Beef served with rice and a fried egg. But you could always order a full order of Luc Lac Beef and add 2 fried eggs! It doesn’t come with rice, but there’s an answer for that too.<br/><br/>Just order a big plate of fried rice to go along with the Luc Lac Beef!

The butter beef and chicken wings are pretty good! However I cannot say the same about the pho... The noodles were not really good and broke apart in my soup :(
Asquared
What can I say that hasn't been said. Yes - try the chicken wings. If you don't eat beef or pork, 1/2 the menu is off limits. Still lots of choice though - go for curry chicken.

Pros: Dry noodles, chicken wings, frog legs, butter beef are all amazing. <br/>Nothing like this in the city.<br/><br/>Cons: Lineups

This little hole in the wall restaurant from the outside doesn't look like anything special, on the inside is always packed, usually with a wait. <br/><br/>We ordered the Filet beef Luc Lac on rice with egg and a large Pho.<br/><br/>The most popular dishes at this place are the Marinated butter beef and Deep fried chicken wings, two dishes that you can't go wrong. Pho here is not as good as a restaurant that serves just Pho as the staple, I don't suggest getting pho here as not much people do either.

Phnom Penh is one of those restaurants that you must try in Vancouver.  From the exterior, it doesn’t seem super inviting and there isn’t too much to rave about the interior either.   But when you do get inside, you can’t help but feel the great energy.  It’s packed inside with customers happily eating, food is coming out of the kitchen at a fast pace while takeout is being packed up.  Patrons crowd around the doorway in eager anticipation of the moutwatering eats.  Phnom Penh is the kind of place that just makes you feel good with their delicious Cambodian and Vietnamese dishes.

Phnom Penh is a Vancouver staple and if you haven’t been here, you’re missing out on some amazing Vietnamese/Cambodian dishes. It’s crazy busy everyday for lunch and dinner. Try to get reservations or avoid peak times. They only take resos for groups of 5 or more. I’ve come here so many times in the past 5 years and I can’t get enough of a few of their signature dishes.

Atmosphere 0.5/1<br/>It's a busy busy restaurant. Tons of people, huge line up. Sometimes you might just have to share a large table with other groups. It's common to have a wait time of 45 min+ to get seated<br/><br/>Service 0.5/1<br/>As you can imagine... If it takes that long to get seated the service is also rushed and tend to be slow due to high volume of traffic. However despite this the servers get things done in a timely manner and it's not difficult to flag one down <br/><br/>Food 1/1 <br/>Best. Chicken. Wings. Ever. Seriously. The rest of the food is as expected, sometimes a bit on the salty side. <br/><br/>Price 1/1<br/>Definitely great price for the portions and taste. The wait to get seated is debatable... Therefore it's best to get takeout <br/><br/>Personal opinion 1/1<br/>Down for Phnom Penh anyway 👍 Only have to time my visits for when it's slower or be prepared to wait for awhile

We arrived at around 4:30 on a weekday, so were seated immediately. We definitely recommend avoiding peak hours if you want to dine in, as there was a line-up forming halfway through our meal. We ordered several of the dishes Phnom Penh are famous for: butter beef, beef luc lac with egg, fried squid, and of course -- their amazing garlicky fried chicken wings. Service was quick and courteous enough, and everything we ordered was hands-down DELICIOUS. Just lots of flavour and lots of comforting, filling food. This is one restaurant that really lived up to the hype!

Phnom Penh, the good ol Chinatown classic. I was debating whether or not to even bother with this post because I know it's been covered a gazzzzzillion times by everybody walking on the face of this planet. Even caught the attention of Anthony Bourdain. I still come here at least once a month as cheat meal for the 3-4 dishes that every table usually orders. It's like my kind of comfort food, and because I live downtown now, the drive or take out isn't as much of a hassle as it used to be. I've gotten to the point where I don't care if I share tables to bypass the lineup. Like yeah sure, I'll let stangers witness me eat twice my size and maybe a baby too. Heads up, if you never been here.. this could be your option.

1: Be prepared to wait<br/><br/>2: Be prepared for some awesomeness.<br/><br/>3: While everyone raves about the Chicken Wings, the Frogs Legs, and Butter Beef, the Sauteed Pea Shoots are so good, you could JUST eat a plate of it, throw $50 down and be happy all afternoon.<br/><br/>(but seriously try them all :P )
Alpaca Lunch
Let me just rave about Phom Penh. Even the name has the word “nom” in it. Enough said. The magic in Phom Penh lie in their butter beef and chicken wings. They are must order items. I will shake my head at you if you come here and don’t try these two items. Seriously, they’re awesome.<br/><br/>Marinated butter beef ($13.95): The thin slices of rare beef are served in a sauce made up of complex flavours. It is savoury and tangy, slightly sweet and incredibly flavourful. The cilantro and fried garlic really compliments it. The acidity in the dish totally revs up an appetite. The beef is a tender, but a little clumpy and hard to separate into pieces to share, but who wants to share anyway?! Just take the whole dish to yourself. (Jokes!) I have to mention that I have always had an aversion to raw meat, but this is the dish that converted me.<br/><br/>Phnom Penh deep fried chicken wings (L $13.50): I can only tell you how many times I’ve heard people compare these wings to crack. They are literally addictive. The chicken is fried to perfection, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. They’re seasoned with lime salt and pepper. These infamous babies are just unlike any other wings I’ve tasted. They’re so flavourful on their own that I don’t even dip it in the dipping sauce it comes with.<br/><br/>On this particular visit, we also ordered the beef luc lac, a hot and sour soup, dry noodles, a plate of veggies and dessert.<br/><br/>Filet beef luc lac on rice with egg ($10.95): The beef luc lac is another popular item at Phnom Penh. It is a very hearty dish. The beef is very soft and tender. The flavour is savoury and a little sweet. While the beef is saucy, there wasn’t enough sauce to go with the rice. <br/><br/>Phnom Penh hot and sour soup with prawns (S $12.95): This Cambodian soup really warms you up. There’s plenty of bean sprouts, sliced tomatoes and prawns in the bowl. It’s sweet and tangy with just a very mild kick, very tropical and complex. However, the flavours were a bit strong, so a few sips were more than enough for me. Also, this soup would’ve earned more brownie points if they used fresh pineapples instead of canned ones.<br/><br/>Sauteed gai lan ($11.75) This particular visit was with Totoro. Totoro always likes to order some veggies. The gai lan was fresh and tender, and the stems had a nice firm and crisp texture, however, they were pretty bland and way overpriced.<br/><br/>Nine layer cake ($4.85) These little cakes are so fun to eat, I just love peeling them, and eating them layer by layer. Probably psychology, but Baby-Paca agrees with me that they just taste better eaten this way. The texture is gelatinous and a little chewy. Flavour-wise, I'd say it's comparable to pandan. I don't actually think they taste any special, but I just like the interactive component, I'm just a kid that likes to play with her food.

My friends raved about Phnom Penh and couldn't believe that I have never gone in my previous visits. They said the wait is incredibly long and unless you have 5+ persons you can't make a reservation. So to ensure we avoid the wait, we arrived at 10:30am on a Monday.<br/><br/>The atmosphere is spacious and clean. The waitress brought us tea right away. Never having Cambodian food, the menu seemed a bit overwhelming to me. Good thing my BF knew what to order. We are a regular fan of raw beef so we ordered just that but it's called butter beef. It wasn't spicy and the beef was partially cooked. I am more used to refreshing raw but this was tangy. I think that's the style of it though. The dried noodles was mediocre. The bo luc lac was excellent! Even though I was expecting cubed beef it was sliced but the flavour was so good. The chicken wings were fresh all over from the batter to temperature to the seasoning. <br/><br/>Overall it was good and worth a visit but I think it was a bit over-hyped for me.

Went to this restaurant on a Sunday night, very busy 45 min waiting time, for a table of 4, service was generally good for a busy place, I ordered fried chicken wings, green papaya salad, luc lac rice, butter beef, dried egg noodle, deep fried spring rolls, and meat ball fish ball soup, everything was very good, I would recommend this place if you don't mind waiting and go on a weekday if possible.

Phnom Penh, a super popular Vietnamese/Cambodian cuisine restaurant on East Georgia Street in Chinatown.  Phnom Penh is one of the smoking HOT and BUSY restaurants in town.  It is a "must go" place if you are a Vietnamese food lover!  You have to go Phnom Penh because you cannot go wrong.  The menu has wide selections of Vietnamese and Cambodian dishes which you cannot find in other Vietnamese joints.  We would not mind facing line up for delicious dishes so my friends went there first around 6pm.  Hubby and I rushed to Chinatown after pick up Hubby from work.  They did not let us to have the table until all 6 of us arrived to the restaurant.  At last the waiting time was around 45 minutes but we were told we only got 40 minutes to eat.    We placed our order while waiting so the food came really fast after seated.MUST EAT:  Butter Beef & Beef Luc Lac
EatingIsMyJob
Loses a star for a lack of online reservation system but that's too much expectations here lol. <br/><br/>The signature dishes are the wings and beef with egg on rice. Egg pancake with oyster pretty good too.

My good friend first told me about this place a week ago when planning for a birthday celebration. He mentioned that the whole lower mainland was raving about the food, and that it was a must-try. But I beg to differ. Not that I'm trying to be a hater or anything, but I just thought our experience was not up to par with all the hype. First of all, we had to wait for about an hour to get in. By the time we were seated, my friend was so hungry, that without looking at the menu, he ordered 5 dishes that he remembered from all the recommendations: Butter Beef, Deep Fried Chicken Wings, Beef on Rice, Seaweed Fish/Meatball soup, and the Oyster Pancakes. The Butter Beef, although scary looking at first, is truly a must try! I never thought I would ever eat raw beef slices, but the flavourful marinade and garnishing made me want to go back for more! Out of all the dishes we ordered, this is the only one I'd come back for. Moving on to the Chicken Wings, it was mediocre at best. I liked the salt and garnish they used for the wings, but the wings itself? Terrible. They used some of the scrawniest wings I've seen in a while and it was cooked dry and lifeless. They also included the tasty wing tips, which was really a meatless plate filler. The Beef on Rice was most definitely not worth the hype. The beef was well cooked and tender, but the marinade felt like a thick store-bought sauce, or even a sauce I could conjure up at home. The meat to rice ratio was almost 50/50 but the overall portion size was on the smaller side and not worth it for the price. On a side note, there was a somehow hint of a chemical taste in the beef, probably from the tenderizer they used, and my sister refused to eat it after a few bites. Next up, the Seaweed Fish/Meatball Soup. Made up of thin clean broth, some wisps of a light seaweed, and very large beef and fish balls. What can I say? It tastes exactly like the 5 minute soup my grandma and mom makes at home. Besides the size of the beef and fish balls, this soup didn't have much to offer. I am however, interested in trying the Special Sour Fish Soup I saw advertised outside, so if by any rare chance I revisit, I will give that a try. Last but obviously not the least, the Oyster Pancakes. If you've ever tried the Taiwanese style oyster & egg pancake, you will find this dish very very similar, but unfortunately without the sweet and spicy sauce to accommodate. They did provide a type of spiced up fish sauce though, so that sufficed for the time being. The portion was big with a diameter of 10 inches! Taste wise? It was lacking in flavour, but I liked the rims, they were crunchy and had an excellent texture. Towards the middle it gets softer and goey. The dish didn't make much of an impact on me, but they could definitely make it more favourable by paring it with a suitable sauce and garnish. Time for the big reveal!! The bill. My friend and I had quite the shock! Butter Beef $13.95, Deep Fried Chicken Wings $13.95, Beef on Rice $9.95, Seaweed Fish/Meatball soup $11.50, Oyster Pancakes $14.50, for a whopping grand total of $73.00 including tax and tips!!! My final verdict for Phnom Penh based on these dishes: unimpressive, uncreative, poorly executed and grossly overpriced! The only saviour of this meal that earned it a rating of 2.0 from me was the Butter Beef. Although extremely pricy for a few thin slices of beef, the taste is unique and worth a try. Patronize at your own risk! Happy eating :)

Everything is to die for! Always have a wait at any time of the day proves that it's a popular joint. The butter beef and chicken wings definitely hit the spot! It is definitely worth the wait to get to eat here.

Chicken wings!!! Butter beef!!! Papaya salad!!! Bo luc lac!!! Oh my gosh so yummy in my tummy. Everything was so good, I can see why everyone has been raving about this place for so long. Don't know if it was the long lineup that always keeps me away or what. The lineup is worth it though. Restaurant is cleaner than I expected, and service was really fast. Only cons are the wait and noodles. I saw a few reviews talking about their noodles not being very good and I would have to agree. Stick with whats suggested, other items are a hit or miss.

Food: 4/5      Service: 3.5/5      Atmosphere: 3.5/5      Price: Avg.$20/person<br/>Return: Once in awhile      Must try item(s): Chicken Wings & Beef on Rice<br/><br/>If you were one of the die-hard-fans craving for Vietnam food in Vancouver, this restaurant could become one of your check points. They do not take reservation; and you will usually see there is a long line up on the street, and they are waiting to get in to try this restaurant. The server will usually announce how many minutes you could have for dining, so please do not expect you can enjoy your meal for full hour. Last time, I went there with friends and we had been waiting for 45 minutes for the table and only got 30 minutes for dining. TIPS: We requested to place an order before we get in, and when we sat down all the food were already there. Back to the food, the Chicken Wings is a must EAT item, and as well as the Beef on Rice. I would not recommend to try their Pho Noodle as I noticed many people would think of that if they went to a Pho Restaurant. This restaurant is different, not a good place for noodle but rice and appetizers or snacks are so good to try. Once you taste their food, you will understand why this restaurant is always so popular in the Chinatown area. <br/><br/>Please add me if you likes my post, thanks for your support.
