You can taste best flavours here, they have wide variety of sushi. Staffs is very quick and effective. It has a cool vibe and their interior is also very interesting.
Flavourful food cooked with fresh ingredientes. Quick and effective service provided by a friendly staff.
Highly recommend the udon august special noodles, the kobe need as well as the sushi and sashimi.
This restaurant is very popular so don't forget to make a reservation. It has a hip/cool vibe, It has a really nice and interesting interior. I particularly enjoyed the Japanese wood work on the wall. The food is uniformly good. We had the sashimi salad which was delicious. We had the fried corn which was good but not distinctive. We had the tempura shrimp which is typically served with a mayo sauce. We don't like mayo so we asked for a different sauce. The shrimp was excellent. Finally we had the tan tan noodle which is a soup and it was delicious. Service was attentive and quick.
Outstanding service, great ambiance, dishes are authentic, delicious and good variety of menu.
The limited deluxe bento box is a MUST!
We will definitely go back to try their other items.
Kingyo Izakaya is a located on Denman St., one of the busiest street downtown Vancouver. It’s also one of the top Japanese Restaurant in Vancouver. If you come to Vancouver, you should definitely go to this restaurant.
I came to this place with my friends few times with my friends. This restaurant was always super busy and had super big line up. So, I strongly suggest people that don’t come to this place right on the lunch and dinner time. It’s great service and food in this restaurant. The servers were very nice, quick and friendly. The food prices were a little bit expensive, but they were very reasonable. The quality and taste of the food were great. High recommend to everyone.
Location: L871 Denman Street, Vancouver, BC Meal: Deep fried calamari, deep fried chicken karagae, and New generation ginger ale. Service: Table service, it was later in the evening so it wasn't super loud like most Izakayas. No water refills though.
Regular love this place! Always tasty food services always friendly one of my favourite places to come and go to. Thank you for the best food service and environment
Great service and excellent food (quality and taste). They're always quick and polite. The food is also reasonable in price and very authentic Nagoya style. The only downside is their fabulous boxes are limited to 10/day (and honestly, are often all reserved by rich mainlanders how can often afford buying 6-8 at a time, as well as reserving weeks in advance.)
Came here for a weekday lunch around 12. It wasn’t crowded at all, although it started getting fairly busy after about half an hour. My friend and I had decided to come here to try the hitsumabushi, since we weren’t aware of any other place in Vancouver that has it. I also wanted to try the kaisen don, but alas, I’ll save that for another time.
One-liner: No complaints whatsoever about this premier Japanese Izakaya experience if you avoid the cauliflower karaage
Highlight: Pressed Mackerel Sushi
Price per person: $20-30
Would I go back? Yes.
Check out my blog post for the full review!
The one-grilled kobe beef ($24) was neat. You seared the marinated beef on the stone to lightly grill it. The beef was very tender and flavourful.
Finally, a 5 star Japanese restaurant that is not pompus and extremely noisy. We did not have a reservation and were admitted to the sushi bar. We watched a young, but more than competent sushi chef at work.
The pressed mackerel sushi was superb – easily the best mackerel we had in town.
The agadashi tofu was properly coated, not greasy, the tofu was the perfect size for enjoying the tofu texture instead of just consuming coating. The presentation too was superb.
The black cod looked small in other Zomato pictures, but we order it anyway. Good thing we didn't order two, or we would not be able to finish two orders of ghindara despite how well the dish is executed. Yummy!
The timing of when the dishes arrived is good as well, considering that we were sitting on the counter, it would not be good if all the food came at once vying for counter space and then they would all get cold before we can enjoy them.
Our server was pleasant and polite. But it took a while before we could understand that they ran out of black adamame.
We deffinitely recommend this place. If you like Suika, you must try this place.
Sushi and sashimi quality are some of the best around downtown and the west end. Great fusion balanced with authentic modern Japanese. It's also got my mum's thumbs up for authenticity and quality -this is our family's go-to for Mother's Day. Service is not great - i consistently have to wave them down to get anything. Last night it took 10-15 min to get a drink order in and the place was half full.
It doesn't matter what you order here because everything on the menu is delicious. This is no doubt one of my favourite restaurants for the past decade or so since it's opening.
One of THE best restaurants I've ever had for Japanese food, the atmosphere is great too with great uni sashimi :)
Their mocha desserts are the best too :)
Came for dinner. I liked most dishes - overall they were well balanced. With few exceptions, I did not find the food to be overly salty, like much of the offerings at their sister restaurants. Wasn't wow'ed by anything but honestly, not much to complain about - which is very rare for me.
Service was adequate. Decor sets a nice mood. Will return and recommend to friends.

After many visits I can say that consistency is pretty good. Food is always flavorful, service is good considering how busy it gets. Definitely best to make a reservation. The braised beef is a must have. Very unique style negitoro sushi.

When it comes to top Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, Kingyo Izakaya on Denman is undoubtedly one of them. This year, Vancouver Magazine named Kingyo as top chain restaurant and top restaurant in the West End. They came in second place for top casual Japanese behind Kinome. Known for a lively and upbeat atmosphere and innovative small plates and bento boxes, Kingyo is one of those places where all foodies in Vancouver need to try at least once. Here is a review of my lunch experiences at Kingyo these past several months.
Really love the food here; though the vegetarian selection is limited, the options are really tasty; the tomato kimchi was super fresh and had the right balance of spices. The deep fried corn is also really flavorful. For meat eaters, this place allows you to grill your meat on a hot black rock, which is think looks really cool. Staff were attentive and friendly as well.
I love the atmosphere of this restaurant, kinda romantic. The food is realllly good. I love how the present their food its so classy. I had a date night/quality time with my hubby so i picked kingyo izakaya from my list of restaurants that i have in my bookmarked in zomato lol. And i must say its one of the restaurants i see myself going again. We ordered warm sake, which comes in this beautiful clay-made jar? So nice! Anyways the sake was very good! Warmed us up ( i was freezing coz vancouver is getting soooooo cold!). For food we ordered the black edamame, ebi mayo, sushi ( i dont remember the name) and kobe beef on hot stone! Black edamame i really dunno was it called black lol it was normal green edamame. Apart from the color it tasted good as always. The ebi mayo was extraordinary, jumbo prawn tips dipped in spicy mayo, very nice n delicious. Not greasy or heavy like many other places. The sushi i really dunno what was it n what was it called but it was Goooooood! Very good lol. But the best part of the dinner was the greaaaaat kobe beef on hot stone! So delicious n succulent the meat was. The sauce that comes along ahhhh just cherry on top!!! For dessert we shared a soy pudding with caramelized soy sauce! It sounded weird to me but i wanted to try anyways. The taste was strange in the bite but then i got used to it n then loved it n i ended up finishing it loool. I couldnt take much pics coz it was suppose to be no-phone-time but i still got some. If u guys try this restaurant plz lemme know.
This is one of my favourite places to come for lunch. I love their Grilled Daily 2 Kinds Fish Combo ($15.80). It is my go to dish everytime I go because I love fish and they prepare it simply and well, just like in Japan. Also I'm usually too late to get their Deluxe Bento Box so this is a good alternative.
Kingyo always has good service and I personally find it less loud than most izakayas which is my preference.
This place doesn't disappoint. Love the Kakuni Bibimbap here. It's more flavorful than sister restaurant Suika's. The cocktail "Kingyo" is very refreshing and not very fruity in flavor.
Mind blowing. Easily entered my top 3 restaurant in Vancouver. Service, atmosphere, and food was exceptional. Literally every bite was an explosion of balanced flavor. Presentation was sheer art. I'm am already aching to come back here and next to my other most favorite Izakaya restaurant Suika, this place is easily two to three steps above better, and Suika is amazing!
Went for a workday lunch and found this place packed at 12noon. Ordered the duck breast soba and did not realized it comes with a veggie tempura, also ordered the cod sushi (3 pieces). And gosh, I ordered too much food. But their food tastes so good and refreshing that I ened up finishing everything. The service was excellent! Will definitely go back more often.
... First up, salmon carpaccio. Fresh, nicely textured Sockeye salmon, with fried garlic chips and crunchy sprouts; similar to sister restaurant Suika, there was too much sauce (actually a tasty pesto soy dressing) which covered the great quality ingredient.Stone-grilled Kobe beef was expensive at $24 for just about 6 slices or so. They were definitely melt-in-your-mouth, tender with its signature marbled fat, came with a grease-cutting vinegar sauce or sesame sauce, tasty.Black cod was ok with soft and buttery flesh, dried tomato and a white miso sauce. The plate of snow crab sushi looked really great, but there was too much shiso that masked the sweetness of the crab meat, otherwise, it was tasty ...
This is a must visit in Vancouver. It is a foodie Disneyland. Decor is tasteful and modern without giving a perception of cold and sterile. The dishes are all masterpieces beautifully presented. Flavours are modern and innovative. Only downside is that you might have to wait a while for a table
It's not a "must go" restaurant. It's a pretty good place for casual dining. Very busy so you need to be patient. The monthly special that I ordered was tasty. The sesame panna cotta was good and the green tea creme brûlée tasted awesome. However the creme brûlée was frozen and too hard- it was really awkward to eat it.
If you ever want to sample what Kingyo has to offer in terms of izakaya, you should definitely opt for their Deluxe Bento Box. The restaurant is only limited to making 10 of these a day, so do call ahead of time to reserve them. For $16.00, the bento boxes are such a good deal, especially when the prices for their izakaya dishes starts at $6.00 or so.
Their "famous invincible and undefeted tantan noodle" ($9.80 for a big bowl) was still good, and this time I got to try other stuff as well. Overall these choices were not as interesting or tasty, but price for what you get and for the portion is fine. Corn Steamed Egg Pudding ($6.80) super smooth egg pudding with corn and crab flakes
Kingyo Izakaya, the same restaurant group as Suika and Rajio, is one of my favourite fusion-Izakaya next to Guu. With the same quirky name styles as its sisters, meaning ‘Goldfish’, it delivers in both food and ambiance. The whole package and experiences there is what makes me give it such a high rating, I have never been disappointed with any their dishes, and it’s always a good time with whoever I go with. Pricing is about average, but it does add up quickly with alcohol and their small dishes, such as this night with Cal, Mizu and Sheshe.

Kingyo Izakaya creates a strong standard to base all Japanese cuisine on. A beautiful restaurant is paired with traditional cuisine that is tirelessly created with meticulous detail and care make Kingyo truly deserving of all its accolades and was, without reservation, one of best dining experiences I have ever had. An instant recommendation.
Four dishes between the two of us, and we couldn’t have made better choices in the amount of variety of dishes we ordered. Every single dish was mouth watering, to the point where we wished we could have eaten more bites of each one long after we had cleaned the plates. My favorite was the kobe beef cooked over hot rocks. Kobe beef is a treat and cooking it over rocks is a thrill. The Black Knight said it was the best meal he had had in a long time. Some meals are memorable; they stay on the tip of your tongue dancing upon our lips and are tucked away in the memory of our stomachs. Certain meals in some ways bring us back to that “magic bite” – one you’ll never forget and sometimes crave.
This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in my life. I went as a group of three and there was a big wait. We almost went somewhere else but I was really looking forward to this so we stuck it out.
We ordered six items which came out as they were prepared. Sashimi salad, sushi, chicken karaage, tan tan noodles, deep fried fresh corn, and bibimbap.
The sashimi salad was above average, with a wonderful combination of salad, yellowfin tuna, salmon, and albacore tuna. The fish was very good, soft and tasty and very fresh tasting, well complemented by the salad. I didn't have any pieces of the sushi but I heard it was pretty good. The chicken karaage was VERY juicy, the batter was tasty without being overwhelming, and the three salts were a really great way of serving it.
The tan tan noodles were absolutely the highlight and one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life, anywhere, ever. One of those culinary gems that you are so excited to find when you eat at a new place. They changed my life. I will dream of them. The broth is so good, understated sesame with a complicated texture of fragrances. The noodles taste so fresh, chewy without being too raw, soft without being mushy.
The deep fried corn was fun. I accidentally bit some cob in the beginning (it is quartered cob bits deep fried) but once I figured out how to eat it, I loved it. The bibimbap was probably one dish too many, but it was still very solid and tasty, served in a nice hot stone bowl to keep it cooking. I loved that the rice got crunchy. The piece of pork belly I had was kind of chewy and I prefer pork belly to be a little more fried, but that is one of my only critiques.
I will definitely go back and take friends here. I loved it. Probably the only 5.0 I will ever give on this site.
Came here on two separate occasions, so I'll give them their own respective reviews!
First time, we came half an hour early (coming from Mississauga, we didn't know what to expect in terms of lines) at 11:00p.m. - before the restaurant even opened. It was quite embarrassing to have waited outside for half an hour, with no line in sight. Anyway, we entered and the four of us ordered their Deluxe Bento (only 10 are produced daily!). About halfway through our meal, we heard a woman try to order the same beside us, only to discover they were now all sold out.
The bentos arrived and - oh my Lord - they were glorious! So much food, and so intricately placed. I loved the salads; they acted as a great palate cleanser with the tangy citrus ponzu sauce. The egg with unagi was a pleasant surprise - my parents usually hate tamago in Japanese restaurants, but they loved this as well. The miso soup had interesting root vegetables, and the chicken karaage was wonderfully light and crispy (though, by the end, I had to pick apart the batter because I was so full). I ate everything, leaving only some skin and rice behind. My favourite part of the bento had to be the lightly seared tuna, though the bento allowed me to try wild salmon for the first time... and it really does taste "wild"!
The appetizer was a slight letdown, however. It wasn't as fatty of toro as I expected, and my parents said it wasn't the best they've tried.
The dessert was delightful and so smooth! Loved the ponzu gelato, though the green tea one was quite normal and uninteresting. The pudding was so soft and fragrant!
The second time we came, it was for lunch again. My sister ordered the tuna don with some.... grated mountain yam? I forgot, but she loved every bit of it. My parents and I had the sashimi set, which didn't disappoint. However, I would've liked a bit more sashimi. That being said, the scallops were the freshest I've ever had (though that's not saying much, since I barely eat sashimi other than salmon). The wild salmon was quite tasty, and I loved the hamachi as well!
We also ordered some green tea, and it was very fragrant and rich.
Overall, great experience and the restaurant is very welcoming (all the staff greet you as you enter and leave). The washroom also demonstrates the staff's attention to detail and customer service; never have I seen a restaurant with mouthwash, Febreze, and tampons/napkins for guests to use!
However, if you come, be prepared for a quite expensive meal...
Kingyo means goldfish, and the little restaurant that feels like an old tavern in a period kung fu movie is heavily branded with goldfish images. Definitely worth checking out for the decor. Keep your eye open for the free mouthwash, toothpicks, cotton swabs, and air freshener in the bathrooms (in this respect similar to their sister restaurant, Suika).
First time at this traditional izakaya, amazing authentic Japanese cuisine with a variety of items. The ebi mayo and Dan Dan noodles were quite tasty, and the sashimi was extremely fresh, definitely coming back!
These are their business cards. My sister found the top one scary. I found it rather original. Faces with goldfish! It could be a new series of horror movies!. A moment of silences for the cute napkin and chopstick envelope…. And we can finally move on to actual food. For starters, we had tofu. This no ordinary tofu. This was a cold tofu served with heavily infused sesame oil dressing. It was heavenly.
First time at this place but came with a friend who is a regular. Ordered the Negitoro Avocado Bowl. I loved it. So delicious and unique. And crushing my own sesame seeds was a neat touch. Great tuna belly, and chilli sauce and miso soup. And great price too. Definitely a great place for lunch. Fast service as well.
Hands down the best japanese izakanya in town. Everything on the menu is amazing! I prefer this place over guu, hapa and suika hands down. In addition to the food, the cocktails are also great.
We were the first guests at lunch hour and managed to take advantage of their super deluxe bento box. Oh my, it's supreme happiness in my mouth! Ten different items, small portions but big flavours and really filled me up. As full as we were, dessert was a must and we had the frozen matcha cream brulee and the red bean panna cotta. Both were amazing - smooth, velvety and just the perfect ending. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. :)
Rock’n Kobe @ Kingyo Izakaya - The hot stone makes the dish interesting, but the fun makes it easy to overcook the beef. Despite some being overcooked, it was still tender. However, the beef didn’t taste like Kobe beef (though I am comparing with the ones I actually had in Steakland, in KOBE, Japan). So, order it for the fun, not for the Kobe taste.
Why I love this place: The assorted bento box is amazing!! If you can get your hands on it, you're super lucky!
Would I come back: Yes, any day, any time!
Would I recommend it to others: Yes!
Wonderful friendly exiting delicious! We were so pleasantly surprised by this teeny tiny gastronomic pleasure house! The service excellent, the food was great, the sake menu was extensive and the plum wine was rich! It was worth the coin and a great Vancouver memory!
Great atmosphere and welcoming staff. The typical izakaya treatment, lots of announcements and shouting. We couldn't get a reservation since they were booked for the night. We were instructed to arrive at 5:30pm for dinner service. We were probably 4th in line and got a table instantly. We had the hot stone beef tongue, which was interesting to cook at our table. The calamari was unfortunately overly salty. The sashimi was fresh and the portion were generous. Overall great service. Highly recommended.
Always great to come here right at 11:30am when they open to get their set lunch. Although it looks like the portions are all small... dont be tricked because it is super filling! There's a lot of variety in their set lunch boxes which I love. You can get a taste of everything.
They have matcha brulee that's super good too! A perfect ending to a Japanese lunch :)
Great place for date night. I never pick anything off the menu. Instead I always ask for the chefs recommendations or they fix me up with off menu dishes for me and my girlfriend. It's always a nice evening here and I always have a shot of sake with the chefs up front. Service is top notch

I only managed to get the lunch set by literally placing my order at the door. As I sat down and waited for my food, I noticed that all of the staff, as well as many of the customers, were Japanese. There were definitely a few moments when I felt like I was actually in Japan. The first time I visited Kingyo, the hostess actually greeted me in Japanese and continued to ask me where I would like to sit in Japanese
My girl friends Jenny and Justine often rave about their weekend brunch visits at Kingyo. This is how much they love it – they are on a first name basis with most of the servers there! For me the overall experience was quite enjoyable. Their lunch menu definitely has good values, and provides a different experience from the typical egg and bacon brunch fare.
Omg delicous. Food is consistently amazing. Service is great. Love this place!
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Great ambiance. The tuna is exceptional. As is the Kobe beef. The restaurant is always busy. But service is good. Will definitely return.
This place gets very busy - make a reservation. I love Japanese food, so I love trying them out. I went to this izakaya and it didn't disappoint! We had the tan tan noodles and assorted sashimi. My boyfriend really like the ikura bowl. They place was crazy busy when we got here, thank god we had a reservation! Service is delightful from the moment you enter: a lady greets you at the door with a very warm and friendly smile - this def made my day!
One of my fav Izakaya place. Very good food with a good variety of choices, I have been there like ten times and I haven't got disappointed at all. Many of my friends who traveled to Van like it as well! Recommend you to make a reservation though if you want a table.
One of the Best!. With so many places trying to cash in on the Izakaya craze, it's good to see that there are places like this that are the genuine article. Everything from the half-cooked cold eggs to the slacker Japanese students running away from corporate Japan as your servers just screams quality food i coming. I wasn't disappointed.
Hitting all he high notes, there is something special about the care taken and the depth of flavour. The "tapas" items are really the highlight. Tongue, Pork Belly.... this list goes on. This is now on my list of favourites.
Authentic Japanese Tapas & Bar Food. It seriously doesn't get any better than this. I love Japanese food and I usually order Japanese food at least once whenever I travel so I have tried several Japanese restaurants in other large cities such as Montreal, Toronto, New York, Las Vegas, LA, Hong Kong, San Fran, etc but Kingyo is probably the best Japanese Izakaya that I have ever eaten at outside of Japan! (I used to live in Japan so I know my stuff!)
Anyways, Kingyo is owned by the group that also operates SUIKA and RAJIO, which are both also izakaya restaurants in Vancouver. They're both very popular and serve delicious food so make sure to try them out!
Kingyo is located in between the core downtown area and the English Bay area so it's kind of nice that it's situated in a quieter area, but at the same time it's a bit troublesome to get to if you aren't driving. You'll definitely need to make a reservation at least a week ahead since they're extremely popular and usually don't even talk walk-ins. (Unless you're willing to wait 30+ minutes to sit at the bar)
I have to warn you though: Kingyo is quite expensive. Even though their menu has a variety of cheaper items ranging from $3.80 - $7.80, you have to remember that this is an "izakaya (Japanese bar)" so they serve a lot of small tapas, which can be easily eaten in a few bites! The last time I came here, we ordered quite a bit of food and it ended up being around $35 per person with a lot of stomach room for dessert after! Of course if you order mainly carby items, you may fill up faster.
Anyways, my favourite dishes would be:
Chicken Karaage - fried to perfection! They're as good as MOGU's / Guu Otokomae's
Stone-grilled Kakuni Bibimbap - possibly my favourite rice dish ever. the pork belly melts in your mouth!
Tantan noodle - a Japanese take on the Chinese "dan dan mein", which is surprisingly delicious and spicy!
The staff here are very friendly and accommodating while the store itself is very clean, trendy, and unique. Definitely recommended.
Warning: I browsed the other reviews and I have to agree that the 90 minute seating limit is a bit ridiculous but if you consider how insanely popular this restaurant is, it really does make sense (even if you book a week ahead, you probably still won't be able to get a good table during dinner time - Eg: I had to book 2.5 weeks in advance to get a table of 8 on a Friday night @ 6:30pm). The staff here do give gentle reminders when it is time to pay the bill so don't feel offended if they're only doing their jobs!
WOW. Enough Said! You can not go wrong with anything here!
Beautiful food, quick service, good atmosphere and value for money. Couldn't ask for much more! I'd recommend booking a table early.

Highly recommend. Best overall food experience I encountered in Vancouver. I heart you Kingyo!
FAVVV. You HAVE to get the King Bento Box at least once. No regrets in life! It's officially my new favourite japanese restaurant now!
Yummy~. My friends and I were left waiting for a server to show us to the table for a good 20 minutes but it was understandable since we went there the day after New year's day so they were very busy. Love the eel stone bowl and Kobe beef! Despite the fact that they were very busy, the server took the time to explain to me how to eat the eel bowl the right way. yummy!
Its an acquired taste. Finally made it in here, and its about time honestly
The interior is beautiful, it has a very cozy feeling with the bamboo plants and the use of wood inside and around the bar. Whats with the yelling in these places though? Is this a Japanese or Izakaya thing?
We had the sakura shrimp cabbage, i wasn't particularly found of the cabbage being raw and the deep fried shrimp were about the size of an embryo lol, not my thing. The sockeye salmon carpaccio was pretty good, the mix of sauces were very good, super small portion though. The ebi mayo was fantastic, great sized shrimp, perfect batter, and a delicious chili mayo sauce, with chili strings on it. The stone grilled beef tongue was not my thing either, I generally don't like seaweed and the bowl was filled with it. It was all washed down with a pitcher of Sapporo.
All in all the vibe and atmosphere is nice. The portions are of the tapas size so be prepared to order 5 or 6 dishes between the two of you. Interesting tastes though, I wouldn't mind exploring some of the other items in the future.
Delish. Yummy yummy!! Ebi mayo was my favorite here! Other things are interesting too.
Went for lunch today. The food is the best I have tasted outside of Japan!!!! Must try!!!
Can't... stop... eating... so... good.... Service was good. Fast and polite.
Room was cramped, The table was cool, it was an old door.
The 4 of us had over a dozen dishes, everything was amazing but here are a few highlights.
Stone grilled beef tongue. Raw fillets with a hot stone to cook it over. nice and chewy with lots of flavour.
grilled pig cheek, Fat marbled and delicate. Best I've ever had.
tempura tiger prawns, AMAZING.
Bibimbap, the pork just melted into the rice. it was so rich but balanced.
Steamed egg and corn pot. fantastic savoury egg custard with nice corn flavour.
Incredible meal, best non-sushi Japanese I've ever had. And that includes Japan.
Wonderful service! I accidentally got a splinter in my hand from my chopstick, and our sweet waitress patiently helped me remove it from my hand! So nice! Food was great and reasonably priced.
So much to eat! Homemade ginger ale is refreshing.
Kingyo is owned by real Japanese. They have good quality Japanese food. I can say this is my favorite Japanese place in Vancouver. They have best Tonkatsu ever. I also like tuna and avocado bowl. Today I have bento which they have only 10set a day. It's like high tea. You could get to try little bit of different kind of food.servers are very kind and interior is nice. The food is awesome!!!
Wow. This is the most Epic sushi restaurant I have ever been to. I feel like I'm in a movie and I have gone back in time to an asian country! Their Loud Yelling Voices yelling words in Japanese made it that much cooler! Amazing. I love it. This place feels too cool for words.
As for the food - just as amazing. The rice was sooo Perfect, like creamy almost, and I had the avocado roll! It practically melted in my mouth!
Always a delight!. Its always a delight coming here for a nice meal. I usually come here after work with a couple of buddies of mine with some drinks. The food is always excellent, ambiance is always spectacular. Best place for fusion Japanese food!
Great Fusion and Place to Hang Out!. This is Vancouver Downtown Sushi at it's best. I love their grilled beef tounge on hot stone! Brilliant idea they come up with. However if you want "plain old" sushi, you wont get it here. Great place to mingle, hang out before hitting the club!
Great Izakaya.. Came here because of a Vaneats special, but that didn't stop us from ordering a bunch of other food to try. The service was great, and the food was quite good. It's got a well-deserved reputation as one of the best izakayas in the city, and it's got an upscale feel to it. Definitely a must-try for visitors, though locals would enjoy it as well.
So good. This is on my list to bring out-of-town guests to... I love the dark, heavy wood furniture and the menu has the power to blow minds (visitors from the prairies still talk about the incredible box meal they ordered- it arrived as tiny dishes of things they'd never encountered before). Most recently we were here last weekend for lunch and had green salad (not on the house, as it is at Suika, but this one comes with avocado), katsu curry and the stone beef rice bowl- a lot of cold-weather food for under $30!
Fantastic. Amazing amazing amazing!! You get worth spending money.
If it was in N.Y. or Tokyo, would be great.
Is chef genius?
Made me cry. Why? Because I live in Calgary where sushi is in its infancy (say Vancouver 25 years ago). This restaurant is sublime. Fabulous food, great service, great atmosphere. a must on every trip.
If you are lucky enough to get one of the deluxe bento lunches (only 10 made each day) you will be very happy. This is one of the hilights of the izakaya scene in Vancouver. 12 dishes including rice and soup always something special and unique. Service is friendly the room is nice.
Uber good food and service. Last evening a fellow female foodie and I enjoyed superb dishes from the chefs of Kingyo. The salmon and tuna sushi were the best I have ever eaten....perfect tempura spot prawns, pork belly to die for (and from if you eat it every day)... black cod.. indescribably delectable as well as the Kobe beef we cooked ourselves on the stone....and 2 interesting deserts.....Crowded place from the opening 5 minutes.. friendly staff.. nice energy
I'd love to know what the wait staff shout at each other..
I'm going to save my yen for a return visit...... and recommend the restaurant to others.
Earns its reputation for best Izakaya in Vancouver!. VanMag has deemed it the best Izakaya in Vancouver and it's well worth the hype! Very fresh sashimi, friendly service, better atmosphere than Guu. Dishes also always seem to be changing and improving (whereas Guu has many of the same things). Also where else can you get horsemeat sashimi?
Great Food, Great Atmosphere. The sashimi is super fresh and other items are also delicious. Services were pretty good considering it was a Friday night. I actually like it better than Guu in other downtown locations. A must try if you already like Guu.
Authentic Japanese Food. Had lunch here ~ good food, good service ~ Japanese servers & lots of Japanese customers ~ good sign!
Izakaya!,,,. Come on a Sunday for lunch (there's hardy anybody) and the service is superb (heard it's been spotty sometimes for dinner). Loved the beef tongue and pork belly, the lightly seared tuna sushi, not so much. The tempura also was a bit off the mark.
One of my favorites.. This place, besides having some outstanding food, boasts the most amazing service of pretty much any restaurant i've ever experienced. This is no exaggeration. And the cocktail card.... HOLY CRAP. You must try the moscow mule. I've eaten at Kingyo three times now, and so far it looks like everything on the menu is a winner. They do really good things with mackerel when it's in season. If you seen any box (pressed) sashimi on special, you must try it. This place is probably my first 10/10. Try it if you want to treat a loved one.
Incredibly flauvourfull and exotic, the bottom line magnificent. Each meal is Each meal is unique and features it own little surprise. When talking about kingyo it is hard to compare it to another Japanies resturaunt
Awesome!. Went to KIngyo the other night, been there a few times and nothing has changed, except the specials. The food was awesome, nice presentation, good flavours, and quality ingredients. salmon carpaccio and yuzu jalenpeno pasta were top notch. and all the seafood, (sushi, sashimi) are super fresh. Service was excellent as well, very attentive, never had a empty beer all night. I'll be back again for sure!
