A couple of weeks ago I visited Truly India. I had heard positive things about the restaurant from my co-workers and wanted to check it out. The building was easy to locate as it stood out with it’s unique orange exterior. It reminded me of the orange on the Indian flag. Immediately upon entering, I was greeted by a smiling woman who asked me if I had something in mind to order. When I told her I had not been here before she kindly suggested that I try some free samples so I could decide what I wanted to get. The samples were plentiful and everything that I tried was the perfect blend of spice and flavour. The variety made it difficult for me to figure out what I wanted to order because I felt like getting a little of everything. Finally I settled on the dinner special; four veggies, rice, and a naan (a yummy, fluffy, crispy kind of bread), and a mango shake to go with it.
I was surprised at the amount and variety of items I was getting for such a low price. While I was waiting, I noticed the artwork on the walls. There were murals painted with traditional Indian artwork which seemed to depict Indian culture. Taken by the detail of the artwork, I asked the owner who their interior decorator was. I was shocked to hear that all the decorations including the paintings had been done by them.
My meal arrived quickly and I sat down in the seating area under the light of crystal chandeliers, which looked charming in the dim light of the evening. I had tried Indian food in the past but the food that I ate that evening was unlike anything I had ever tasted before. From my experience, Indian food is usually greasy so much so that I thought it was requirement of delicious Indian cuisine but I was surprised that the food I was eating was both delectable and healthy. It was like food your mother would make. I particularly enjoyed the mango shake, it actually tasted like fresh mango and was just the right amount sweet and refreshing.
After I was done my meal, I was offered some sweets to try, all of which I found delightful. Unable to resist, on the way out I asked them to pack me some chocolate barfi as well which they happily packed for me in a neat, resealable plastic container before they thanked me for coming and sent me off with a smile. Based on my experience, I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for an absolutely pleasant eating experience. I will definitely be visiting them again as soon as I can.
Preface: This review is written by a life long vegetarian and Indian food lover.
Summary: this place serves up authentic, delicious North Indian vegetarian food. If they were in a more populated area they would have a line out the door. A must try!
My adventure:
When I arrive here I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and colourful the decor was. Beyond the gold painted arches and hand painted murals on the walls, I was greeted by two very sweet ladies. I was quickly offered samples of all their none dairy options before being asked to pick 2 curry dishes and 2 dry curry dishes (a tough task as they were all homemade authentic and deliscious).
I'm so happy to have found a place like this in the eglington-dvp area.
Top shelf food served by wonderful sweet Indian ladies.
Food is really good. Not greasy like some Indian food - very healthy. Sunday evening 530-830pm is all you can eat plus a Bollywood movie. The only negative is the styrofoam plates - great for take out, but I would rather have a real plate and cutlery while eating at the restaurant. The place is super clean and very friendly.
