The broth was really good and I found the cold buckwheat noodles to taste a little firmer than the ones I’ve ever last time at Cho Sun Ok. However, it was just as satisfying and delicious. There was an egg and vegetables including sliced sweet pear in the cold clear broth.
In my soup there were a mix of egg, daikon-like cubes, clear glass noodles, green onions and dried seaweed as garnish, all swimming in clear beef broth. It was so satisfying, I wanted to finish the whole bowl. I was in a daze at each spoonful. It tasted very similar to the beef soup I regularly had as a kid but it was far from having the same ingredients. I really tried to eat it as fast as I could, mindful of the other people waiting for a table. I tried to ward off the guilt that I was sitting on a four-person table as no matter I had good intentions to finish quickly, it was impossible with the amount of food before me.
All the table cooking soups are fantastic. Especially the bulgogi/octopus soup!
Their mackerel soup/stew is very good as well.
Service isn't the best but if you're cool with moms & pops kind of atmosphere, then you'll have no issues.
Overall: My go-to place for Korean food- tasty side dishes, generous portions, good service
When I asked my Korean friend where to go for good Korean food downtown, she recommended me this place. She was right! The restaurant is very clean and the service is good. I asked the server what to get, she instantly recommended me the Pork Hock- which turned out to be the best choice! Their Small Pork Hock is delicious and it comes is very very large in portion- I had hard time finishing, even though I shared it with 2 other people. The side dishes here are tasty- and comes in variety, too. I want to come back here and try different dishes!
Best Authentic Korean Food. As a Korean myself, I absolutely loved the food at Lim Ga Ne. A friend and I ordered Kimchi Jjigae (Soup) and Grilled Croaker and to our surprise, the food exceeded our expectations. The Kimchi Jjigae (Soup) was full of kimchi, vegetables, and pork, which made the broth full of flavour. The Grilled Croaker dish actually came with two fish and was plenty for the two of us. We had seven dishes of assorted side dishes and they were equally as good as the main meals. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody. Lim Ga Nae is probably one of the best restaurants with authentic Korean food I've ever been to.
I’m on this Korean food binge lately and I thought I ought to review a type of dish that hasn’t been featured on this blog yet and that is samgyeopsal (samɡjʌp̚sal). It’s basically pieces of pork belly (similar to uncured bacon) that is grilled fresh at your table via a table grill and garnished with sauces and wrapped with lettuce. The crisp edges of the grilled pork work wonderfully with the sauce and lettuce wrap, it is no wonder why this dish is a favourite among Korean food lovers. There are no super complexities with the dish other than the fact that the best samgyeopsal comes from fresh-never-frozen pork. One thing to note for people new to the dish is that the meat is not marinated at all; the sauces are responsible for lending the pork most of its flavour. If you’re up for the prepping the ingredients and picking up the sauces from your local Asian supermarket, this is a rather simple dish to make at home.
It’s a bit plain but typical of a cheap Asian restaurant, where food and affordability is the emphasis not decor. I have been on a Korean food binge lately and came across Lim Ga Ne while in the area. Decided to come with my family because my mom wanted to try a variety of Korean dishes (she likes to cook). The first dish we received was a complimentary pancake appetizer, a nice yummy touch I appreciated. Then we had the bibimbap I usually love to order, which I sadly did not love it at this restaurant. Felt it was a bit bland and missing a certain “jena se quai” – Korean style. Our third dish was
This is like a second home to me. Best side dishes ever, strong sharp and rich in flavour. They offer complimentary pancakes and once i even got soondae! I am a Samgyeopsal bbq fan and theirs is big enough for 3 girls with a complimentary stew. Also this is one of few places I know that offer soondae and grilled beef intestine. It opens 24/7. The more conventional offerings are all very good as well, the cold noodles, kimchi chigae, soondae chigae, kalbi soup etc. I personally think if you just want a bibimbap, then it really doesn't matter where you go. I never order it here but it looks quite good from other tables orders.
Also catch the latest korean dramas on the TVs if you go on weekday evenings !~
I agree with review before me, their grilled mackerel is quite impressive.
Another popular Korean restaurant chain in the Greater Toronto Area where there’s often a long line up for its popular pork bone soup which is rich in flavour after having been stewed for many days with a superbly rich broth made from pork bones and korean herbs and spices. One of my personal favourites would be the oxtail stew which is rich is collagen and nutrients and my girlfriends all loved it for its extra nourishment for their health.
What I like about Lim Ga Ne is the marbling that you get with the pork pieces. Also, when the place isn’t too busy, the wait staff even help you cook the pork at the table. Their side dishes are pretty standard, however the fishcakes that they gave were very good with a bouncy texture to it. If you do end up coming, make sure to order some of their grilled mackerel, it was very fresh and grilled perfectly.
This location has two locations in Toronto, one in North York and the one near Christie Pitts Station (the one I tried). The one on Bloor is a tad pricier than the one in North York yet the quality of both are actually the same in my opinion.
