I have been exploring some of the Korean restaurants in this neighbourhood at lunchtime. So far there are a few similarities (menu, large portion sizes) and differences (decor). Lim Ga Ne seems to be somewhere in the middle from a decor and seating perspective. Half the restaurant has a simple, conventional table and chair arrangement, and the other half has a traditional no shoes and low table seating. The decor is modest, with a few posters, televisions, and international flags suspended from the ceilings. The restaurant wasn't too busy when I arrived, so I was promptly seated and served a cup of hot tea.
Admittedly, my menu choice has been very narrow in my recent Korean eating adventures. I seem to be stuck on TonKatSu and it's various derivatives. Although I did not see it in the Lim Ga Ne menu, they had a small poster on the wall, advertising TonKatSu for $10, so I went with that.
While I waited for my main dish, the server brought out six small side dishes. This seems to be a common practice at Korean restaurants. The dishes included kimchi, pickled radish, roasted potatoes, bean sprouts, shredded beans, and some short, broad flour noodles.
Then the huge plate showed up, with a large portion of breaded, deep fried pork cutlet, topped with a fruity, sweet sauce ("katsu"). On the side were sticky rice and coleslaw. The pork had been pounded thin, and the breading had kept some moisture in the meat, preserving some tenderness.
Another tasty, filling Korean meal.
24hr korean restaurant! Good place with good amount of choice of food to choose from.
I really enjoyed this dish and thought it had just the right amount of spiciness in the broth and various things mixed in it to keep things interesting.
Overall, I really enjoyed our dinner. The banchan was delicious, the service and restaurant setting were simple and great, and we got to try some brand new Korean dishes.
At Finch, Lim Gah Neh is a very popular Korean restaurant chain in the heart of Uptown Koreatown. This location offers especially fresh and delicious cuts of barbeque meats such as beef ribs and freshly sliced pork belly, and this is the place for Korean barbeques. Besides that, I will order extra cold appetizers (panchan) as they are both sweet, fresh and savoury and is a great start to the meal.
Lim Ga Ne (5529 Yonge Street) is one of many Korean restaurants just south of Finch subway station. It was a Sunday evening and somewhat busy when we walked by and decided to try it out!
Yummmmmy. My boyfriend and I got this dish to share and it was more than enough to completely stuff us. This dish also had tofu, hot dogs, and SPAM of all things. Finding spam in this dish really made us nostalgic about our time in Korea, haha. I really enjoyed this dish and thought it had just the right amount of spiciness in the broth and various things mixed in it to keep things interesting.
I love Korean food and was really happy with this place! I was initially a little confused that the servers didn’t seem to be paying attention to us but then realized there’s a button (located either on the table or on the wall next to the table) to call for their attention – I was surprised to finally see this at a restaurant outside of Korea! For an even more authentic and traditional experience, there are a few tables on an elevated platform as well where you can remove your shoes and sit on the floor to enjoy your meal.
