Chinese Traditional Bun is unassuming from the outside but makes up for this with delicious and thoughtfully prepared dishes. A couple of us headed here on a cold afternoon last week and the food definitely hit the spot.
The first few dishes we tried were the pan fried dumplings, pan fried pork buns and beef pancakes that were all tasty. The noodle soup also stood out and warmed us up quickly from the frigid weather outside. The lotus salad and sea weed salads were a good addition To cut the heat and cleanse out palates.
But the highlight for me was definitely the fish soup. Served steaming at our table the owner assured us that this was a one of a kind dish and this definitely was. The fish was cooked perfectly and the spicy broth complimented it well. I would also recommend the soup filled dumplings as long as you can master the art of eating them.
All in all it was a well rounded meal that we would return for for the friendly service and to try some of the other items on the menu.
Delicious lunch with friends today in Chinatown at Chinese Traditional Bun. We started with something I would never think to order because of it's name (Black Fungus) but it was a delicious cold app along with the lotus root salad (had a spicy kick to it, super refreshing).
Then we moved onto mini pork sandwiches cut into quarters (the pork was slow roasted and melty as it should be) and round meaty buns. The pork and leek dumplings had a lot of flavour and a good crisp on the outside. Then came a bowl of spicy potato noodles with tofu - holy cow are potato noodles delicious. I've never seen this on an menu before so this was a fun change, the broth was tasty as well.
Then came a huge, beautiful bowl of spicy soup hotpot with fish. It smelled as good as it looked, but wow was it spicy. The broth had beautiful pieces of fish and glass noodles, the dish was amazing on a cold Toronto day like today. Finally, we finished with vegetarian shu mai and soup filled meat buns (loved these, you poke a hole and sip the soup first before chowing down on the meaty bun). Staff was friendly and it was a great lunch overall.
I came to Chinese Traditional Bun a little while ago with pretty high expectations and I'm glad to say this place met them.
The waitress who served me was very nice and attentive.
I ordered variety of dumplings ($6.99) and the pork and shrimp Shao Mai ($5.99).
I've had really good dumplings before in Scarborough and this place was almost as good.
The dumplings made for a delicious lunch, but there were a few things that could have been improved.
I thought the wrapper on the dumplings was a little too thick, the meat could have been more flavourful, and the dumplings stuck to the paper.
The shrimp tails were not taken off in the pork and shrimp shao mai, but I was relieved to see the shrimp were deveined. I might have just ordered the wrong thing but I believe this place has much more potential.
I will be back to try their other delicious food items.
The most incredible Chinese fare I've ever had. The spicy aubergine, the baos, the noddles, the dumplings..OMG just everything so so good. Just don't mind the grease on the tables. It's a small price to pay for authentic fare. Also rem like all little gems this ones cash only. So next time you're at AGO make a stop here for a bite. Hamza Nakhoda Aliasghar Taha
Hidden treasure will not disappoint. Situated below the street level on Dundas St. just west of Spadina, this Chinese restaurant is a hidden treasure. Super-spartan, super-simple, utterly unpretentious, this resto provides great flavour and the best bang for your buck. Order dumplings or buns from their vast menu and watch two ladies roll out the dough, form the dumplings, and steam them. I find this restaurant to be much better than other dumpling restaurants on Spadina which are better known because of their location.
So good dumplings. This place just has it all, good food and great prices. The dumplings are just so filling and they are made in front of you, there is also a cured pork sandwich (don't remember the name) but tastes just amazing, so good. I cant even start to describe how good it is. We also order the steam pork buns, this ones where alright, the same standard as other places. I would recommend eating here if you are looking for good priced dim sum. We ate a lot that day we couldn't even had dinner, and we still had leftovers for the next day, all this was for less than 20$ (with drinks).
***And for the review about the cleanliness of the place, well is not like super clean but which restaurant is clean? I have seen filthy kitchens with mice in restaurants in college st and people still eat there shitty food.
Handmade goodness. I'm from Vancouver, the centre of great Chinese restaurants in Canada, and came here with a friend who recommended it. Was not disappointed. Right off the bat, I was happy with the service and hospitality. Even though we walked in 40 minutes before closing, they seated us and ended up letting us eat half an hour past their quitting time.
The waitress was quite friendly, made good recommendations as to what to order, and when the food came it didn't disappoint. There were also some unique items I've never seen/tried before, like the glutinous rice dim sum, which was quite tasty. The portions were generous for the pricing, and overall quality was good.
Definitely worth a try for their buns. Mind you though, being part of Chinatown probably means there's tons of places that do just as well as this place, but I just mean you won't go wrong coming here either.

This is the most authentic northern Chinese restaurant I've been to in Toronto thus far! It's unfortunate about the tragedy that happened here, but the food is still great. My boyfriend and I enjoy 'real' Chinese food and we can get it here. I recommend the 'high quality lamb soup with bread', their 'cured pork',the "steamed noodles" under the chef specials, and all the buns. Yum.
Was there last night. Dan Dan noodles are amazing and spicy! Pork buns and dumplings are outrageous.
I agree with previous post: if you think the restaurant is too dirty to eat in, you don't deserve the delicious experience.
Amazing food, I don't know what the next review is talking about. DanDan noodles, any type of dumpling or bun is great. I had fresh pulled noodles in China and this is the greatest place since.
Apropriately named, the traditional-style buns are excellent.. These are not the snow-white doughy buns with the deep-red, sweet "cha-sew" bbq pork inside. This is more along the lines of an unbleached flour, hand-made, with delicately-seasoned fillings, eaten steamed, moist, and with vinegar, soy sauce and chili oil. The grilled satay lamb skewers are tender and smokey. Not a quickie kind of food place, but the wait is worth the authenticity.
This place just rocks my socks everyone.
Chinese Traditional Bun 中華經典包子舖 is definitely a true hole in the wall and they serve legit Northern Chinese food, and to start we have the Xi’an Curdled Pork in the Bread which is toasty and crispy on the outside and rich and savoury with the pork gravy being the star of the dish.
The main course we ordered is the Xinjiang Spicy Chicken with Noodles, which is a generous portion but it is leaning on the spicy side. I would recommend to request a milder spice level for the dish, the chicken is rich in flavour and the noodles are thick and possess great bite.To best accompany this dish would be a plate of lamb dumplings that are stuffed with marinated lamb and rich spices and herbs that complements the Northern cuisine.
