Mak European Delicatessens

Great cevapi. The price is very reasonable. It's a deli with a little sit down area in the back. Great Burke and good Yugoslavian food. I also like the fact you can buy everything frozen and take home to cook. And the sauce is awesome.

Mak Restaurant is a casual Bosnian lunch venue, using real plates and serving made-to-order food right off the grill.  Our order was taken by the cook at the grill, who said she would bring the food to our table.  We said that we would split the orders, so we could try more things.  We were given a bottle of tap water and some glasses.  

First up was the burek, flavourful ground meat in light pastry.  Then the cevapi (skinless pork and beef sausage) and sudjukica (smoked sausage) arrived.  The cevapi was grilled meat like a flavourful hamburger, while the sudjukica was more like a debreziner sausage.  The lepinje bread was a pita shape, but leaven rather than flatbread.  Condiments included were chopped onions and a white (yogurt?) sauce.  

For drinks, we had an imported blackcurrant juice and an apricot juice in the bottle.  We got extra glasses to sample the flavours.  

The meal could be best described as European fast food, not haute cuisine.  Freshly prepared, tasting the different spicing was worth the slight detour into Scarborough.  This isn't a dress-up occasion, but a small adventure that doesn't require an airplane ticket.  We arrived at the restaurant after 2:30 on a Friday afternoon, and were the only customers.  Other tables were eventually filled by people who seem to be regular customers.  The front of the store is well stocked with products from Eastern Europe.  Between the meat counter and the restaurant at the back, some takeout food (cabbage rolls) were available in a small hot table.  It would hard to justify Mak Restaurant as a destination if you're not in the area.  However, if you're exploring Lawrence Avenue East or want to make a short stop of the Don Valley Parkway, it's easy to navigate to this parking lot.
