Ate the appetizer eggs which were very tasty and well cooked. The laksa was also very nice and rich. This street has amazing food! My friends had the wings, noodles and some other dish which all looked amazing.
This place has some really great Asian inspired menu items, as well as cocktails. Had the cucumber salad and curry soup with chicken, and the person I was with ordered the pineapple pork. Everything we ordered was done really well, and all the drinks were great! Would definitely go back.
I’d walked past Hawker Bar once or twice before and had the opportunity to go one Friday night, I was excited to try their wings and their son in law eggs, two dishes id been seeing a lot of on social media. I went with a friend and we ordered the son in law eggs, the chicken satay special, the wings and the red duck curry.
Love at first bite! Experience flavours of the heavens right here on planet Toronto, delivered in a hip and friendly fashion.
Hawker Bar for life! ✌
Terrific Food, friendly service. Hawker Bar has the best chicken wings I have ever eaten. Their son-in-law eggs were interesting, the prawn and ginger dumplings just fine, but go for a whole pound of the singapore sweet chili soy glazed chicken wings. Their daily specials are always good. My husband and I couldn't decide if the lamb shank curry (his choice) was better than the beef cheek rendang (my choice). They both had wonderful flavour. The laksa was ok, as were the noodles, but the specials outshine the regular menu. This food deserves beer; ignore the cocktails. Prices are reasonable. Service is excellent. Street parking is a matter for prayer, but worth the attempt.
Just Okay. I had high hopes for this place as beef rendang is one of my all time favourites. It was okay but my homemade rendang is superior! The laksa and cocktails were okay but to be honest, I really don't see myself returning. My boyfriend however loved the laksa the first time he went and already went back to try the rendang for himself. Great service.
Had the Prawn and Ginger Dumplings, Singapore Noodles, and Whole Fried Sea Bream! DELICIOUS!!! Especially the sea bream!
Good for lunch!. So we went here for lunch... and the Laksa yellow curry with chicken (we each got the medium size $10) was just about one of the best things I've ever tasted! It's a GIANT bowl with super-flavorful, and just spicy enough yellow coconut curry, chicken, tofu, a hard-boiled egg, water chesnuts, bamboo, eggplant and lots of noodles.
I have a fairly good appetite and had to take more than half of it home (same with my friend). So we were pleasantly surprised. They flavors are wonderful and just the right amount of spice.
We were pretty much the only customers inside, but the space is a bit tight. There are wooden tree stumps to sit on, while creative, might be a pain for people with back issues. We didn't try a cocktail, but they were a bit pricey.
Anyway, this place also has the SAME lunch and dinner menus. (main dishes besides the laksa curry are $14+!) Since they're open for lunch, it would be great to see a separate lunch menu, since the food is good. Considering most of the specialty restaurants in the area have separate (i.e. cheaper!) lunch options, it would be best if Hawker can offer the same.
3 Great Things About Hawker Bar. This place will stick out in the Ossington strip for three reasons:
1) They have a sign outside that clearly states that they serve alcohol and food until 2am!
2) The servers are so funny and welcoming
3) Their tofu & wings totally hit the spot. Flavourful, affordable, and fantastic.
P.S. Only drink Evan's Revenge if you like a good, swift kick in your alcoholic beverage!
Spontaneos Visit, Surprising Results!. Spontaneous Queen Street food crawl started at Hawker Bar! The friendly staff and cool decor was a good first sign. ( Although when they get their liquor license they will be hard to stay on) We started with the Son-In-Law eggs. DELISH! they dont have that food where we come from! We also started with pork saatay with peanut sauce- so many flavours! Our mains we the Laksa soup ( have pepto handy if your sensitive to spice) and the Ox tail which was outrageously fabulous. \For desert.... fried bananas and ice cream!!! NomNomNOm the bananas were bright green, DEFINITELY not around where we come from. Two country thumbs up
I have read complaints on foodie forums that Toronto's first spot for Singapore-inspired street food isn't authentic enough. Oh please. I have never eaten street food in Singapore but even if I had I wouldn't be comparing; I like when restaurants give tradition a twist. Rosie :)
hit it on a Thursday night around 7. had to sit at the bar for a few but was soon seated on a tree stump and was handed a cut-up wine box with a menu hand-written with a black sharpie. there was a nice buzz in the place with a diverse crowd…older, younger, daters and drinkers. Service was decent. he made recommendations when asked and explained the dishes he brought out.
The food at Hawker Bar is simply great. Although I've been hearing different people saying about how it's not authentic, and how the cut of the tofu should be bigger, etc. TRUE, I agree it's not completely authentic. However, the chef is still able to keep the integrity of the cuisine by using the proper ingredients and spices. I don't hear people complaining about Susur Lee adding foie gras to Peiking Duck?! But anyway, I'm pretty sure I've tried everything on the menu after 4 times visiting in just 1 month.
We were just randomly finding a restaurant in the area and walked in. They were only serving brunch menu at this time so I couldn’t try their laksa. I had the Eggs Benedict with pulled pork, chilli jam and taro croquette. It was delicious with Malaysian flavours. The egg was perfectly poached with running yolk, pulled pork was tender, the taro croquette is different from the Chinese ones but it was good, like a taro patty.
Hawker Bar is dedicated to serving up Singapore-style street food.
Small, whimsical and decorated with wallpaper and wood, this eatery serves simple, but fragreant Singaporean cuisine. Perched on a
Great place food for post work drinks and some delicious small plates. We tried the Son-in-law eggs, Singaporean wings and the Prawn and ginger dumplings. Complex flavors in quick bites is always a win-win.
The service was quick and efficient and worked well for the short time we were there and the ambience was warm and inviting. Definitely seemed like a place that would get packed as the night went on.
Singaporean influenced restaurant, Hawker Bar is located in a cozy place at Dundas and Ossington. The restaurant does their own style of Singaporean street food. To start we had the Singaporean Sweet Chili Soy wings (pictured above) which were fried with a bit of a kick. It was served with a mixture that tasted like soy sauce on hoisin sauce.
We also had Brussel Sprouts with red pepper chili which was one of the daily specials.
My main was the Braised Duck Leg with Thai Red Curry. The duck was tender and fell off the bone and the curry was very flavourful.
As I ate, I sipped a First Flight which was Gordons gin, Chartreuse, St Germain and fresh grapefruit juice.
Even though I was completely stuffed, I couldn’t help ordering fried banana for dessert!
The meal at Hawker Bar was enjoyable. We were pretty lucky to get a seat though in the small place without a reservation.
We are regulars and usually get take-out. Curry Laksa is our staple, the flavor is perfect. We are disappointed that they changed the large size to a medium and charge the same amount. Chili-soy chicken wings are awesome.
Great food! The chicken wings were really good, one of the best chicken wings I've had! Very reasonably priced. The curry noodles were also one of my favourites. Small place so ideal for group up to 4. We were a 5 so it was a bit of a squeeze at the table.
If you're here, you MUST try the Laksa. This dish is a hot soup with all kinds of veggies, tofu, your choice of chicken or meatless, in a delicious coco-nutty (curry?) broth. It's so good, I have yet to try any other dishes.
Cocktails are great as well, my favourite so far is the sling.
The decor is very cool and casual. The place has some 'log' stools at it's tables. I was a bit intimidated when first approaching one to sit, but they were fine. I promise you will not fall off. Red lights that shine on the room throw me off at times, but they add a warm feel to the space, almost as if you are underground at some secret little hideaway.
Service is always good.
