Very happy with my visit to Makkal Chon (well, relatively speaking—I went to a funeral immediately following lunch). Nice atmosphere and the service was super friendly and efficient. The food was excellent and the sides were the best I’ve ever had in my many years of eating in Korean restaurants. One of the best experiences I’ve ever had with Korean food. Highly recommended.
I visited this restaurant on 7th April, 2017 and overall it has been an enriching experience for me to try Korean cuisine for the first time. Located at Lawrence Avenue East in Scarborough, the restaurant is situated in a commercial town centre right along an array of small shops which is opposite to a gas station. The ambience is nice although the interior is quite small but cozy with well-lit overhead lamps on each table. The waitresses were friendly and willing to assist in explaining the different food items on the menu. However, service takes long and the good thing is that they serve a lot of complimentary side dishes such as kimchi salads and glass noodles along with the main course. We tried a lot of dishes, chicken in a clear broth and braised pork just to name a few. In a nutshell, that pork dish was an absolute winner for me since it was succulent and tender in texture and so juicy that you couldn't resist ordering an another plate. They also serve a pot of herbal tea which is quite soothing on a rainy day and I think it is customary to drink tea before the main meal according to Korean traditions. The prices are reasonable for the amount they serve and would definitely visit this place the next time I am in town.
Always good but it get busy early evening especially on weekends , friendly service. Has recently been refurbished. Never too long to wait for a table
I really enjoyed this meal. We ordered combo B veggie wraps (grilled pork, bulgogi and mackerel), pork bone soup and kimchi fried rice. There were 5 adults and a toddler. That was just enough for all my of us.
The veggie wrap combo was good, bulgogi and grilled pork were tender and tasty the mackerel was flavourful. The dishes weren't greasy and weren't full of msg. I personally liked wrapping but everyone else thought it was unnecessary.
Pork bone soup was amazing, my favourite dish from this meal. I would go back and just have the soup, perfect for a cold rainy day.
Kimchi fried rice was too spicy, it was the only dish we didn't finish.
We went on Sunday around 2:00 pm, the restaurant was half full with steady traffic. The service was slow considering it wasn't too busy (took 15 mins for ban chan, about 30 mins for food) and they weren't attentive (had to ask 3 times for tea). With drinks the meal was ~$80, so not too bad for 6 people. I would definitely go back and recommend this place.
If you want yummy Korean food in scarborough then this is one of the places to check out.
It's not he typical Korean food but the quality of the food is awesome. They have these meat wrap you use lettuce and the favorites like bulgogi.
Also a tiny place so be there early cus it does get packed!
One of the best things about the cooler weather is the return of hot, comforting stews back into my diet. The other day I had a craving for pork bone soup and ended up at Makkal Chon as we were running errands in the east end. The restaurant is located in a small strip plaza at Lawrence and Warden in Scarborough. We arrived at 5:45 on a Saturday evening and while we were able to get a table right away, the restaurant quickly filled up and by the time we left, there were several groups waiting. So if you come during peak hours, you can expect to wait.
Finally returned to this cozy place after many years. Seemed like a long wait to eat during the dinner rush but was worth it and many more customers were lined up after. The best Korean dinner I've had with my family.
Had Kpop on and my favourite rice tea and served ddukbokki as a banchan. Not to mention the Korean grocery store next door with all the Korean favs and music.
Even my parents enjoyed the bibimbap and Bulgogi wraps after much complaining.
Will definitely come back!
Love eating here. Food is always very good. My personal favourites are the dol sot bibimbap and the pork bone soup. My rating is based on my experience eating here multiple times. Took some points off for the quality of the wraps that I have received a couple times: once i got a lettuce with a mouldy looking spore on it the size of a pea- I seriously gagged since we have eating half of the wraps already. We showed it to the server who took it and returned apologizing and saying it is because their leafy greens are all organic.......hmm...but then they did replace the basket with a new one so that was good. Some more points taken out for service. The service here is usually excellent, but sometimes they were not ex: ordered more side dishes and asked for tissues and tea- was waiting for a while cause she was really taking long. Looked behind me to see where she was and she was eating at the table behind me. I mean if you are on break, send someone else to the table to serve us. Don't just come take our order, not say anything and then go to your break..like really now. But anyway, all in all the food is great and will keep coming back. Definitely recommend people to try this place out.
This is the first Korean restaurant I have been to on the east end and I had a really good experience. I can confidently say that this is one of the few of my favourites on the east end. Came here on a Sunday afternoon knowing that this would be my only meal for the day. It was quite busy but the servers were very efficient and friendly. I ordered myself the pork bone soup as to that is one of my favourite Korean dish. My partner ordered soybean paste stew with beef brisket. The side dishes were mostly good and there was only one we both didn't really like. Pork bone soup was one of the tastiest I've had. I liked the fact the you could adjust the level of spice. My partner who usually doesn't enjoy soybean stews really liked his bowl for some miraculous reason. We both left quite full, satisfied and happy with our choice for the day. I would make this one of my go-to places for Korean food.
Best Korean food restaurant!! Everything was tasty and delicious. The kim chi side dish is a bit weird but the BBQ food was excellent. Not recommended for people who want to save some money in the budget. Over expensive quite a bit but it worth for the taste.
Team DesMan loves some piping hot gamjatang (pork bone stew) on a cold day. There’s something so comforting about hot soup and flavourful, fall-off-the-bone pork. Gamjatang is akin to sushi of a Japanese restaurant; it’s the crowning glory and usually, best representative of a Korean restaurant’s merit. Last weekend, Team DesMan decided to try out a local Korean joint and put their pork bone stew to the test!
What an amazing little treasure. Firstly, the food is amazing. So much flavor and such a good variety. But the service was top notch. So polite, courteous and willing to do anything to make the experience as amazing as possible. I recommend going here m, I know I will be coming back
Very good food, served in a nice atmosphere. The samgyetang was quite tasty (with tender meat falling off the bone in a well-simmered stock) and the eggplant banchan was out-of-this-world good.
...tiny Korean restaurant known for its deliciously authentic food. Unknowingly, my parents and I had walked into the second Best Korean Restaurant in Toronto according to blogTO .
I have tried a lot of Korean restaurants in the Toronto area and I can honestly say this ones the best I've ever had! The restaurant itself is in a weird location and there's only about 10 tables altogether, really small inside and decor is pretty minimum. I recommend doing reservations if you don't want to wait. Food is super authentic and really flavourful! The pork belly veggie wraps are my favourite! So many side dishes as well. The servers there are super sweet and accommodating, always refilling my tea without me asking. I will definitely be back again! Amazing place!
A great place to go for some authentic Korean food in Scarborough.
I'm all about the pork bone soup
It's a small restaurant and would suggest to call ahead if you're planning to go during peak hours at dinner.
I'm no expert I Korean food but I'm very impressed. I got the bi-bim-nap for takeout. The restaurant was packed and most people seemed to be having the lettuce wraps. I was jealous of all the side dishes they couldn't seem to start on and to my pleasant surprise when my takeout came it included 4 generous sides as well! Everything was very fresh. My recommendation is that you order ahead for takeout, mine took about 20 min. I will definitely come back with a friend to try the wraps. So so pleased with the variety in my meal for $11
Love it!. I almost always get the veggie wrap combo but everything else I've tried is amazing. My go-to place. Side dishes are great and everything is fresh and tasty.
Soft tofu stew with beef is especially good. Generous side dishes. First time trying Korean food and this was good! Service a little slow.
Combo A. Great quality food and large quantity for 2 ppl. sided dishes are all really good too. love this place!
Never thought I will find a Korea restaurant at this part of the town. My wife and I ordered their Wraps combo, and we were glad we made that choice. Combo came with a basket of veggies (assorted), 2 types of meat, 2 bowl of rice and tofu soup. The portion is big, we can only finish half of the food (part of the reason is they serve those korea side dishes and we ate a lot, and even those were delicious). I will definitely go back to this place and recommend to everyone.
Each dish is well-made with care, everything is truly amazing Korean. So tasty. Fresh. Good price. I could go there every month. Mmm
Excellent Korean Food. I'm not Korean, although many Koreans mistaken me for one of their own - I'm a big fan of Korean food, and love going to Makkal. Food is excellent, service is always friendly - price is more than reasonable. However, the food might take a while to come when they're really busy... but the best pork bone soup in town, and side dishes more than make up for it.
Pretty good. Very good side dishes. Veg wraps are different and good. Soups are a bit on the salty side but also good. Best K-restaurant that I have been to in Scarborough.
High-quality ingredients and skilled preparation makes for great food at Makkal Chon, but maybe next time I’ll make a reservation to cut down on the wait.
Makkal Chon serves real quality Korean food, it's not in heart of downtown- but it's close enough. If you are sick and tired of the typical BiBimBab, Seafood pancake and Porkbone soup- give Makkal Chon a try and you will get to experience what real Korean food taste like.
After reading my favorite Korean foodie aka Justine @foodigatorJ blog post here , I just have to try Makkal Chon out. Unlike most Korean restaurant located on Yonge or Bloor Street, this one is located in Scarbrough at Lawrence and Warden. Heard from a few other people that it's where a lot of Korean goes to for authentic Korean food, so I am confident that I will like it (^_^) Side Dishes Wraps Combo A ($25.99) ~ Basic Vegetable Wraps Choice of 2 Meat Dishes ~ Choose between Bulgogi, Chicken Teriyaki, Spicy Chicken, Mackerel, Mackerel Pike, Spicy Pork, Grilled Pork and Spick Squid & Pork ~ Purple Rice & Soy Bean Soup (Daen Jang Jji Gae) We decided on Bulgogi and Spicy Pork Came with a assortment of veggies instead of just lettuce for you to wrap your meat with and I love all the different texture and flavor here (^_^) Spicy Pork, love how it's not overly saucy nor too sweet like most other restaurant has it. The balance of spicy and sweet is perfect here ;) Bulgogi was tender and
