China Cottage is a well known hakka chinese restaurant located in Markham near Markham and Steeles. The interior is well decorated and has a clean, classy look to it.
I haven't tried too much here other than the typical chilli chicken and fried rice dishes. Their take out menu is also quite cheap. If you're looking for a $6 meal in Markham, it's not too bad. The last time I went, I got their Chicken 88 with Beef Curry and Vegetable Fried Rice. Their chicken 88 is probably my favourite dish as it has a spicy tandoori flavour and I love spicy food. The fried rice is a huge portion and probably impossible to finish even with two people (unless you're very hungry!). The beef was okay, nothing exceptional.
Overall, if you have hakka chinese cravings, it's not a bad place to eat. I'd say it's equal to Fredericks (the well known Hakka Chinese restaurant two blocks down).

Delicious, flavorful, fresh, fast and great service. Food is always piping hot and super delicious. Choice of spicy or mild and every dish is packed with vibrant Colours and awesome flavours! Definitely a new favourite for us.
Excellent hakka food served in big portions. The soup is the best I've ever had. No complaints about the prices, either.
Best part of my visit was the Masala Fish
Went for dinner yesterday. Got a hot and sour soup, definitely do not recommend it, it wasn't very good. The Masala Fish was awesome, definitely recommend that. We ordered spicy mixed rice and Manchurian beef. Those were really good. Next time I would probably reduce the spice on the beef.
Our server was good and patient with us as we discussed the menu and recommended some good items. However, we waited a long time for our meal. The price was really good for the large portions they gave you. Three items was plenty enough for 4 people.
Would definitely go back and try other items! No Soups!
Went there for lunch and the food was good. The portions were very large and the place was busy. I would go for lunch again. Good food for what you pay.

Surprisingly impressed. I had a very enjoyable experience here. This new location on Steeles is beautifully decorated; modern, dim lit, and clean! Half the menu is Hakka (spicy Chinese/Indian mix) and the other half is Thai food. The platters are HUGE and like most Asian restaurants, dishes are served family style for all to share.
I normally have low expectations on customer service when I dine at Asian restaurants in Markham, so boy, was I pleasantly surprised to have such GREAT SERVICE at China Cottage. The menu doesn't describe the dishes so I had a lot of questions; our server was patient and he knew the menu like the back of his hand (all 100 or so menu items!). The manager/owner came mid-meal to see how everything was going (always makes you feel special) and having declined refills on our iced-teas, he brought us glasses of water without us even requesting - perfect!
Fried Chillies and Chicken App - Huge portion, very spicy, but flavourful.
Shang-Hai Veggie Noodles - delicious, and unlike other places I've had this dish, the onions were actually cooked :)
Thai Coconut Curry Shrimp - the flavour was present but too subtle, almost bland
Fried Plaintains with Vanilla Ice-Cream and Maple Syrup - beautifully plated, plaintain batter could be improved but otherwise good
Will definitely come back with a larger party so I can order more dishes to try!
It's really good,cheap,and has good portions.I enjoy the food everytime I go but they take a long time to prepare good which annoys me when I'm hungry,
Great place for some nice spicy Hakka food. Got their special pepper chicken and it was absolutely delicious. It was nicely cooked and they give a good portion. The Hakka Chicken Noodles and Chicken Fried Rice definitely have some nice heat to it and has a nice blend of flavours. For vegetables, we got the Long Beans which were quite spicy but nonetheless tasteful!! Overall, a great dining experience despite some people in our group not being able to handle the spiciness and the heat. It was a filling meal for a great price. Will definitely come back for some fire in your mouth!!
