Nice little dim sum restaurant on the Danforth. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy for sure but the food we had was excellent. We had a selection of dim sum items and every one was great, hard to pick out a favourite among them. We also had soups to begin with, my companion had a wonton soup and I had a hot and sour soup and it was one of the best I've ever had, almost a meal in itself. To top it all off the prices were very reasonable. I will definitely return if I am in the area again.
Strong Tastes for a Small Selection. Some of the best finds at Ha Gow were the Steamed Eggplant with Garlic and Deep Fried Tofu with Special Spicy Salt. Both had some extremely strong flavours on them.
The eggplant was loaded with garlic, so if that's not your flavour, avoid it, but if it is, it's a really tasty dish that strikes you with each bite of the soft eggplant. The tofu was a crisp deep fried exterior with a hot soft interior. Just make sure you have water because while the spicy salt is mild and flavourful, it is after all, salt.
Other than that the dishes at Ha Gow are basic dim sum, with some interesting takes on them. It's a small menu, but the prices are reasonable (under $4 each) and priced according to size. There's also a section dedicated to some great vegetarian options as well.
If you go on a weekday, arrive just before the school across the street lets out for lunch. You wont find a seat as it is a pretty small restaurant and there'll be a line-up of students looking to buy some of the other affordable takeout lunches.
Great Find!. It's always hard to find a good dim sum place outside of Chinatown, but this little gem along the Danforth measures up! Great, friendly service and the food is fresh and tasty! The menu has a fantastic selection of both meats and veggies - all at an affordable cost (great combos too)! I grew up eating dim sum, so I know good chicken feet when I see (eat) it, and this place doesn't disappoint! I only wished I lived closer so I could dine here on the regular! So, if you are an east ender who craves good dim sum or chinese food in general, check out Ha Gow.
