Food were great. I love Hainan rice, Assam whole fish (deep fried) and so the curry lamb. Very very goodDefinitely recommend!!!
Food was excellent and has variety. Price was fair and service was fast. Indonesian fried rice was my favourite dish as well as the roti.
Excellent and I would suggest that the appetizer playyer should be good for a family of 4 not 3. Make your spring rolls for 4 people.
The roti canal is to die for. A must try for sure.
Amazing food. Friendly staff. Big portions. Authentic Malaysian.
Amazing service! Had a wonderful dinner here!
Place does not look great from the outside and is not the best in the inside but the food was good and the service was also not bad. We were a large crowd (13 of us) so we tried various things and shared a lot. Mango salad is amazing as was chicken satay. Other food was good too. Did not like the eggplant option in vegetarian as it was bland but it looked fresh. Will I go there again? Not unless I am in that area and at lunch or dinner time.
I shared a few of the dishes with others at my table, so I got to try several different ones. The fried rice dishes were really good. The Pad Thai was very tasty. The service was ok. The menu could use descriptions of each item, so that it's clearer for those that are unfamiliar with the cuisine. I enjoyed what everyone else at my table ordered, but did not enjoy my own because it was not what I was expecting. Overall, good food, and I would return again.
If you want good Malaysian food in scarborough then this is the place to be. They have a huge selection of Malaysian dishes to choose from.
Also their roti is the bomb! Their food is delish and tasty! I also love that they have a huge selection of vegetarian dishes. A must try :)
One of my favourite places to go when I visit Toronto. The food is spicy but authentic. And it's the closest we've ever found outside of Singapore/Malaysia. Our staples are always the satays, mee goring and Singapore laksa. Till the next visit. Yum!
When I approached this restaurant from the outside I didn't have high expectations. However, once I sat down and smelled the food I was pleasantly surprised. The lunch specials are pretty good value and offer a lot of food. I ordered the curry chicken noodle and thought it was delicious. The meal came with a soup and cold iced tea. The nasi goreng did not disappoint either.
It had a good vibe as I walked in. For some reason, I really enjoyed just admiring the white curtains against the window and sunlight seeping through. I guess it sort of reminded me of a scene from the movie The Great Gatsby. . It appeared they recently hosted a banquet. . You Fan Service Callers. It's pretty much a call bell for customers' needs. I think this is brilliant and effective!
By some strange fate, I was checking xiaoeat's blogs and discovered that this Gourmet Malaysia was also strongly recommended. After more cross-checking on Yelp and other blogger websites, I was more convinced to visit this. Lastly, my wife's coworkers suggested a restaurant that was really good for Malaysian food since they originated from there - located somewhere on Sheppard East and Brimley. Was it the same restaurant, "Gourmet Malaysia" ? YES! Historical records online revealed that this restaurant used to be located in a food court long ago.
Food:4/5
Service:4/5
Price: $10-20 per person, depends on the dishes
Atmosphere: ...
Ordered my first Singaporean laksa here! I thought the flavours were quite all right and rich in coconut; however, my mother said that it wasn't the best version that she has had and that it still lacks in depth. The Hainan chicken rice was very flavourful and delicious in garlic taste, but the chicken fell flat and was too dry. Overall, decent but may not come again purposely!
I go there all the time. It's one of my favourite places. Never been disappointed with food. Huge selection of food, Singapore laksa is amazing. A+++
I love this place! The size of the menu is absolutely ridiculous, and the restaurant space is large as well. They've got tonnes of great menu items, including their satay, their curries, and their Hainan-style chicken with flavoured rice. Whenever you have the choice, go with the roti, which is crispy, buttery, and super delicious with curries. Word of warning: some of their menu items are very spicy, coming from someone who loves spice. They also offer a unique fried version of Hainan-style chicken, which I haven't seen at other establishments.
I've been to this restaurant a couple times and it hasn't disappointed. The mango chicken and calamari was great because it wasn't too heavily fried. The curry is very good, I recommend the lamb curry with roti. The pad thai is great too but there are so many other dishes I found more delicious than just pad thai! Great pricing and good portions. Definitely will be coming back again!
Hailing from Souh East Asia, this was the food I grew up on and I missed it dearly when I moved here a few years ago. I was feeling particularly homesick (and craving all sorts of things) that day and decided to venture out to Scarborough and Gourmet Malaysia!
The menu was so extensive that I had the hardest time deciding what to get. Next time, I'll probably bring someone with me so I can order more. Their portions are also fairly substantial. I had the roti canai with chicken curry to start, which brought me back to the mamak stalls back home where we'd get our roti canai for breakfast. It was delicious, crisp, flaky and light and the chicken curry was spot on. Highly recommended.
Next, I had the char kway teow which came with ample amounts of seafood. I even asked for it to be 'extra charred/burnt' which might sound like an odd request, but works really well with the kway teow noodles. To my surprise and delight, the waitress knew exactly what I was talking about! The dish was delicious to boot!
I also had the kangkong belacan which tasted exactly like my mother used to make, and I even bought a jar of their sambal belacan to take home with me.
Delicious food and great service. Always a winning combination!
The chicken roti canai ($7.99) was a great starter; large cubes of tender chicken and potatoes cooked in the fragrant curry. But, it’s the three pieces of roti canai that make the dish special, their fluffy texture very different from the relatively flat Jamaican and Indian roti I’ve had in the past. You’ll also find it heavier as the dough is grilled in oil rather than being baked like its unleavened counterparts. But, its flaky crevices are such great vessels for soaking up the light curry. After reading Xiao Eats review, I knew the crispy butter prawns ($12.99) were a must. A heaping dish of fried bites soon arrived, sure to excite any Carnival lover’s heart. The shrimp were lightly dusted, deep fried, then stir fried with a nest of crispy salty bits, which our waitress explained was fried cream (traditional recipes use an egg mixture). If you’ve ever had pork floss, the dry brittle texture is similar to this, except lighter in consistency and flavour. Despite its name, there really isn’t much of a buttery taste. In the end, the dish was a decent rendition of fried shrimp but lacked any spices to make it e
It's hard to find authentic Malaysia food in GTA, so there is not many comparison. The food here are very tasty but the price are way more expensive than before.
Stopped in for a.quick lunch. The place was about 25% full, so service was prompt and good. Prices were also reasonable, decent portions and good value.
Food quality was also quite good, but not exceptional . These guys are competing on speed and value, not quality.
They also appear to be a Chinese restaurant that has branched out to try to offer something different with "South East Asian good" .
The pad Thai was not even remotely authentic. As is typical, Chinese ho fun noodles, with tamarind sauce instead of soy. Pad Thai does NOT have red and green peppers. The spring rolls were good.
Bottom line: good stop for lunch if you are driving by and you feel like something different from the typical Chinese in the area.
Nicely decorated restaurant with beautiful chalk drawings on the wall. Every single thing we ordered was plain delicious. The only thing is our tea smelled like clorine. Will be back for sure!
Good food, good price. I have tried their Roti Cannai (with beef) and Satay Chicken with Noodle. Both the food were pretty good. I also tried Teh Talik but it's taste was average. Their staffs were not that efficient. We waited long to place the order and no one was taking out the dishes when we were done. Over all experience was good. I will go back there again.
Fast service. Clean washrooms. Cheap food. Tasty and filling dishes. Have nothing bad to say about this place. Mango salad was great. Fried tofu was delicious. Their prawns were massive and juicy.
Authentic Malaysian Flavours, service needs improvement. I've eaten here twice and my dinner party has left very full and satisfied each time. My Malaysian friends say this restaurant serves dishes with true Malaysian flavours. The prices are really good and portions are fair. My favourite dishes are the satay meats (all very tender) with a delicious peanut sauce, laksa soup (spicy and creamy), Kangkong belacan (water spinach) and roti with beef curry. Even the hot tea is nice with a settle roasted scent that is better than average. (I keep forgetting to ask what is in the tea.) If you like spicy food, this is a great place.
My only complaint is the service needs to improve. The servers are not attentive; they never check on you so you have to wait a while to wave one down and get your tea filled. Also they don't give you serving utensils with the family style dishes unless you ask. The timing of food from the kitchen is not good either. Our appetizers were served with the entrees, and our roti came out after we finished the curry.
Although I barely scratched the surface of Gourmet Malaysia's behemoth menu, what I was able to try has been promising. Sure there were some average at best dishes, but there were some gems of delectable proportions to be had as well and with a menu this big, who knows what other treasures lie hidden at Gourmet Malaysia.
My Malaysian-Chinese friend who has lived in Malaysia mentioned the dishes at this restaurant were closest to “home” for him in Toronto. Being authentic was a big draw for me, as I have had so called ‘Malaysian food’ in the past, but the dishes were noticeably Thai dishes. In my head, I puzzled together “Scarborough and authentic Malaysian” and totally assumed the place would be a dive. Sorry, if I offended any Scarborough peeps. OH, was I wrong! We were there for a family birthday celebration and were comfortably seated at a round table with chair covers. The place was clean and spacious at 6000 square feet. The dark walls were covered with drawings of places in Malaysia and they even sold imported snacks at the front. First impressions count, and I was already impressed. Of course, the food
...we decided to try something different and give Gourmet Malaysia a shot. After all, with a special board like this: featuring chicken cartilage, you know it’s gotta be good. It’s a good sized pl
For the past two years, The Fiance has lamented about the closure of his favourite Malaysian restaurant and the lose of their famous “coconut shrimp”. After some serious time spent Googling, he found the dish on Gourmet Malaysia’s menu. While the shrimp was close to our expectations, a number of other dishes were also hits.
The lack of an available parking spot in front of the establishment is always a good start (though there is ample parking just around the corner where a giant asian grocery is located). The next really good sign is the signature whiff of curry and lemongrass. Though the dining room looked pretty empty when we walked in, it filled up quickly with regular customers who were greeted warmly at the door.
Dishes were hit or miss at Gourmet Malaysia. Maybe I ordered the wrong things but in terms of authentic flavors and quality, I found it to be quite inconsistent. I loved the chicken flavored rice and even just for that, I would go back to this place. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes (hopefully all Hits next time!)
Authentic Malaysian, Singaporean, and Indonesian cuisine. Price is reasonable and portion size is large.
I used to only know about one other Malaysian resto in Richmond Hill but Ken Sinn recommended this lovely place in Scarborough. It's less busy than Restoran Malaysia but serves equally amazing food. They also take reservation so it definitely saves a lot of queue time.
The most delicious dish was the roti canai. The roti was flaky, crunchy, and not greasy at all. The curry was flavourful and there was plenty of sauce to soak the roti in. The fried noodle (Char Kway Teow, or stir-fried rice noodle strips) was above average, the taste wasn't as strong as Restoran Malaysia's. In fact, it was more similar to the Chinese style that I am used to.
We also ordered 2 versions of Laksa, Penang Assam and Singaporean. The Pennag Assam had a spicy and sour soup with thicker noodles than the Singaporean. The Singaporean version tasted like a curry soup and I personally found it tastier.
All in all the service was fast and friendly. The food was good and roti amazing. If you haven't tried Malaysian food before, definitely give this a go.

OH, was I wrong!

Of course, the food would ultimately sway my perception.
After speaking with the owners, Amy and Yummy Tan (yes Yummy), they informed me that their Gourmet Garden Restaurant across the street was opened for about 20 years, which was a fast food joint, and Gourmet Malaysia restaurant/banquet hall was only opened for 2 years. The main room holds up to 150 people and the private room holds 20 to 50 people. The main dining room also has a stage, which gave me instant flashbacks of attending Chinese weddings in the 80s and 90s , when karaoke with the hottest thing ever!
Now, on to the ordering. Luckily my husband had been here several times to help us narrow down our choices, since their menu is massive.
I highly recommend everything that we ordered. We had a great balance of meat, seafood, veggies, rice and noodles. I have left the menu number below, so you can order the same thing!

Gorgeous fruit place. It was on the house!
And also, we ordered ‘The Talik’, both hot and cold (Malaysian tea).
It’s hard to lose weight in my family, you should see how much we order when we go to dim sum! I hope that the food pictures were enough to convince you to go.
As for improvements, they need to make sure all their servers are comfortable with explaining the dishes. One of our servers was noticeably shy and would drop the dishes and walk away. I know this happens at many Chinese restaurants, but when someone at our table has a food allergy, it is crucial for us to know what’s in our dishes.
We had a great experience overall and I would highly recommend this restaurant for a large group.
Okay, go already!
