If not during rush hour such during a Sunday peak brunch crush, this picturesque restaurant/café is a lovely hideaway oasis from the frenzy of Little Italy and offers a tasty menu selection with the pictured breakfast omelette a good pick me up for the days' challenges. Good staff, reasonable prices with unlimited customer sit-down parking

This place has transitioned from a great coffee place to a great dinner place. It's right but still cozy. Staff are attentive and the food is the main event as it is supposed to be. I might add I love their cocktails. Creative and old school at the same time.

Enjoyed some caesars and appetizers on the patio at Kalendar. Love the patio here as it's good for enjoying the outdoors and for people watching! They offer brunch on weekends and a healthy selection of other meal choices throughout the day. The food has a bit of a Mediterranean twist.

On College St. in Toronto just west of Bathurst St. and tucked between quaint shops and restaurants, we happened upon Kalendar; an historic and charming bistro with a unique personality. We were immediately intrigued by the patio décor, accolades that the restaurant has earned adorning the windows and classic black and red exterior – the perfect spot to escape the chilly winter with.

We were warmly welcomed out of the cold by a plethora of delights; a friendly smile from the host, simply gorgeous rustic décor, a gentle hum of the busy atmosphere, and best of all: scintillating aromas wafting through the air. We were seated in a cozy corner by the window and thank goodness for the gorgeous sunshine streaming through that shed light on all of the delightful little details in the dining room. The snug space boasts plenty of natural beauty, from aged decorations to intimate lighting; it’s really no surprise that this nook has been continuously rated Toronto’s #1 first date spot.

We came at just the right time to enjoy a quick brunch, so we perused the menu for some unique choices to satiate ourselves. We went with the Eggs Napoleon ($14.95) and the Banana and Mango Stuffed French Toast ($14.95). The Eggs Napoleon came served on a huge plate filled with savoury roasted potatoes and fruit so fresh you would think you were dining in July rather than December. Stacked artfully on a surprisingly flaky and buttery croissant were hearty poached eggs and melt-in-your-mouth smoked salmon, all layered well to deliver an exceptional flavour in every bite.

The Banana and Mango Stuffed French Toast was, simply put, a revelation. We opted to add a side of bacon ($2.50) to this dish to bring in a sweet and salty balance and it was a fantastic addition. The French toast was very moist and fluffy pairing well with the soft fruit tucked inside, adding a little maple syrup turned every morsel into a warm, gooey mouthful of sweet and tart heaven.

If you have a loved one that you’re looking to take to a romantic dinner or if you’re pro-active enough to jump on some Valentine’s Day plans, you would be very fortunate to sneak in a reservation here. Whether it’s for their scrumptious brunch or delectable dinner, you’re sure to fall in love at Kalendar Restaurant and Bistro.

Good - great for dates and drinks, mussels, black bean hummus, seafood risotto with scallops. Bad - would not recommend the warm pear salad.

A Lovely Time. I have been going to Kalendar for a few years and make it a point to bring all my friends there, especially in the summer! The patio is always great and the food delicious! Also a really good selection of desserts and teas if you just want a nice treat or for a quick meeting.

Delicious mussels!. My bf and I love the the mussels in red sauce and we've also tried their scrolls "wraps" and they're pretty good. But we definitely go for the mussels! The atmosphere is cozy and the patio is great on a summer day.

The spot was great. My hubby ordered the lobster and raviolli and it was disappointing. I had the seafood linguini an it was a bit over salty but still good.

Great little spot. Intimate enough for a great date and casual enough to bring your close friends... Great dishes and overpriced booze. If the patio is not too full then it's a great place to hang out despite being so close to all the douchebag spots of Little Italy

Lovely little place, reliable but predictable food. Always a great "go to" for brunch. Beware if you're hung over, it's always quite loud.

Great overall. I eat here often and have never had a bad experience. Staff has always been very friendly and efficient. Food is great. Particularly love the salads (though would recommend you never add chicken to any of them - my friend ordered additional chicken to one the other day and was rewarded with the equivalent of half of an unseasoned bird on top).

Great dirty vodka martini. Good brunch with great coffee.

Great Patio! Frequent summer stop.. I love Kalendar's patio; it's big and enclosed from the busy foot traffic of College St. Inside is quite cozy and romantically dark at dinner time

It's usually where we stop to have after dinner drinks or a late evening snack. Specialty coffee has been hit or miss, I guess it depends on who's making it. Had the pizza a few times, crispy thin crust and very nice topping combinations!

Although service can be slow if you dine at prime time, I have always had friendly service - one night last November it was actually warm (though jacket necessary) and the server was totally cool with serving us on the patio!

Cheap & Cheerful!. Wonderfully eclectic setting for a casual dinner. The Orange Carrot Ginger soup is my favourite soup of all time! One day I'm going to order two bowls of the soup for dinner! 'Scroll' wraps are delicious and the price is small. I've never had anything I didn't like. A great find!

Great ambiance!. Food quality is pretty good but not amazing. Their signature dish is a "scroll" - which is basically a flour roti filled with either Italian (e.g. sausage and spicy tomato sauce) or a curry. The ambiance is definitely better on a winter's night - as they decorate the place with pine and spruce boughs, candles, and have mulled wine and cider!

It's a pretty tiny restaurant, so be prepared for long waits if you have more than 4 people. We had 7 people and had to wait well over an hour. We were patient because we had mulled wine and some interesting beers at the bar. I think it would be a great place for an intimate dinner for two.

Great dinner overall. I went to this restaurant over the weekend hoping for the patio (which is great) but it rained. So we sat inside and it was nice, darker and intimate with red votives on the tables. The food is definitely creative and of the 5 in my party, everyone's meal was delicious. I especially recommend the nanettes. Service was also good. This would be a cute date spot but equally good for a group.

We both split the french toast. It was stuffed with banana, mango and cream cheese served with herbed potatoes and 2 slices of fruit. It was humongous. It was good but I think the bread itself could've used a bit more flavor.

Kalendar is a beautiful cozy restaurant located in Little Italy, west of College and Bathurst (just past Palmerston Street on the north side) that offers a Parisian vibe, owned and operated by childhood sweethearts known simply as Ellis and Cher-Ann.

Kalendar has come a long way. The building has been at its current location since 1912, and has always been a meeting place in the community. From its origins as a barber shop to its final transformation as a restaurant in 1994, the owners take pride in the fact that Kalendar has been named the best spot for a first date.

The atmosphere is beautifully romantic, with dark wood panelling and seating, dim lighting, and décor that sets off an intimate tone that almost makes you feel as if you have been transported to a European cafe. Our favourite spot is the 4 seater wooden booth in the far back corner underneath the almost unseen DJ booth, which we’ve somehow managed to snag a spot at every time we’ve gone (here’s for travelling in large groups!)

The menu is varies from Italian and Indian-inspired cuisine, and they have a nice variety of wines and cocktails at a reasonable price. The dishes they are most known for is perhaps their “scrolls”, which are rotis that are a mix of North American and Indian ingredients.

Taylor and I both ordered pizza at Kalendar, our favourite. The crust is always thin and the combinations of toppings put a creative and delicious twist on an otherwise ordinary, run-of-the-mill dish. I got a Mediterrean-style pizza–Pizza 1–a thin dahl-puri crust with olives, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, onions and feta cheese; Taylor got Pizza 4, a thin crust with a pesto base, a brie-style cheese, roasted chicken, roasted red peppers, yellow zucchini and red onion.

The good: The food is well priced for the portions, and comes fairly quickly. They have a good size patio, perfect for watching College Street on those warm summer nights. The atmosphere is delightful and one of our favourites along this strip.

The bad: They don’t take reservations so it’s first come, first serve. Street parking during the day is usually available but come night time, it’s almost always packed. The best option would be to look for parking lots or take the College streetcar.

Overall: Kalendar is a reasonably priced and warm little restaurant. It’s usually always fairly crowded without being overwhelming packed, and it’s the perfect spot for a first date or catch-up dinner with good friends.

Well, I gave it a good, long, every-muscle-engaged push. My little wheels were spinning 120 km/hour, but no matter what I did, I remained stuck in the rut. I wasn't getting anywhere, and I wasn't getting out, and we all know how frustrating that can be.  Eventually my little engine conked out and I was left to wonder why I tried to go that route in the first place. I had laid things out quite nicely for my dreams to come true, and I had put them all on hold thinking I had to move through a series of specific, structured motions.
I haven't even bothered to hide it. The past two months have been hell for me, and everyone else that have been brave enough to step into my life.  Being the hard-working, goal oriented person I am though, I stuck it out because I knew I should, and I prayed that one day... whenever that may be... I would be happy.  Kind of a vague concept, now that I look back, but I suppose that was just because I put all of my energy into the concrete goal of a degree, without any thought into the seemingly abstract goal of my happiness. Happiness is hard to measure, and I guess I like tangible things.
Well, this past weekend, I embarked on a reflexive journey, filled with a lot of crying and uncertainty, but I came out clearer than ever. I finally came to the realization that as abstract as it was, happiness should be the goal, and the process of getting there does not have to be miserable.  It's not like math where two negatives always make a positive.  Two negatives are probably more likely to yield a negative in this case, and I just am no longer willing to risk that.
So, without this sounding like a re-print of my diary (ha, who am I kidding, this is my diary), I will just get to the positive moral of the story, and then, more importantly, the food.  Grad school out, full time Abbey's Kitchen in.  Do I ever have a hell of a lot of exciting ideas on my to-do list.  Ha, and that to-do list may be even longer than it was when I was in school, but I am just jumping to get at each item.  Can't say I felt the same about each new Marx essay.
This is going to be my year, and now I finally have the time to enjoy it.  So definitely keep your eyes on the website, facebook, twitter and blog for updates on all the mischief I get myself into.
Okay now onto food. Well, reflexivity makes a girl hungry, so some friends and I headed out for a casual meal on College St at Kalendar.  I had been to Kalendar once before when I moved back to Toronto after high school (so, ages ago), and all I could really remember were that the scrolls were pretty delicious. So as a last minute dinner option, we figured we'd give it a try.
The room is old, a little dark, but charming enough.  The chairs aren't particularly comfortable, but it wasn't a long, lingering type of meal, so I didn't mind too much.  Our server was friendly, but a little absent.  It often took a while to track someone down, but the timing of the meal was still appropriate.
Their cocktail list is playful, and extensive.  They definitely had a variety of options that I could easily entertain, but I opted for the South Beach (vodka, banana liqueur, mango juice, orange juice) because once I saw the banana liqueur (my favourite flavour for anything), I knew it was for me. Well, it's definitely an easy-drinking cocktail, basically tasting like juice, which I must say can be dangerous for some of us who are in a tender state of life-goal-confusion.  As tasty as it was (and therefore, maybe a good starter drink), it was probably even a little too sweet for me to drink throughout the night or with food.

Food wise, we started with a couple of shared appetizers:

Hummus Plate (with carrots, apple slices, olives and naan)

I wasn't a fan of this hummus.  It was too "gritty" for me (not the smooth consistency I prefer), and while I prefer a more pronounced lemon flavour, was almost bitter from an excess of garlic.  Also, because of the strong garlic aroma, I definitely did not think the apple slices worked.

Baked Camembert (wrapped in phyllo, sprinkled with walnuts, served with berry puree, sliced pear and apple, and naan)

This was a much more successful appetizer.  The Camembert was creamy, and mild, which was complemented nicely by the sweet puree and tart apples.

We all opted for half scrolls with salads, which were massive despite being the half size.  I also like that you are able to sub any other cold salad for a $3 up-charge if desired.  I only sampled mine and my partners, as I was a little sick and didn't want to spread the bug.

Scroll Three (Oven roasted chicken, sugar snap peas, carrots with sweet yellow curry sauce) Honey Roasted Beet salad (with chevre, walnuts and arugula)

First of all, I love the roti-like wrap on these scrolls.  It's got a really satisfying chew, it holds up to significant weight and moisture, and it isn't heavy or tough. I did really like the flavour of this filling, the curry was aromatic and substantial, without feeling too rich.  However, I did find the texture a little off putting.  There was a little residual grittiness that I tend to experience if I haven't cooked out or really dissolved curry spices/paste well enough in a sauce.  Regardless, it was an enjoyable dish
The beet salad was good, but not great.  I found the honey dressing a little bland, and very sparse on the greens, so I was looking for a little more acid and a bit more salt and pepper.

Scroll Five ( Oven Roasted chicken, avocado, plum tomatoes, feta and herbed mayo) Black Bean Quinoa salad (with corn, tomatoes, cucumber)

Scroll Six (Roast Beef, portabello mushroom, caramelized onion, asiago cheese, plum tomatoes with horseradish mayo) Honey Roasted Beet salad (with chevre, walnuts and arugula)

This one was the best dish of the night (that I tried, at least).  The beef was a touch dry, but still, was not at all leathery or chewy.  All of the vegetables were well cooked and appropriate- the mushrooms were really meaty, while the onions and tomatoes lent a balanced hit of sweetness.  It was well lubricated with aromatic mayo, and bound together by a healthy helping of salty pungent cheese. That poor roti was seriously packed full, but I actually ate it all.

Scroll Six (Roast Beef, portabello mushroom, caramelized onion, Asiago cheese, plum tomatoes with horseradish mayo) House salad

While the dessert menu looked extensive (and there were quite a few offerings that I would have been pleased with), I thought it might be more fun to change up the scenery and head to Yogurty's for frozen yogurt.  Mmm.. self-serve anything is a little dangerous for me.  But the pumpkin yogurt (especially with Skor bar on top) was definitely a good choice.
So for the 2 apps, 5 cocktails, and 4 dinners, I think the bill was about 175 including tax and tip- very reasonable for us.  Would I return? Probably only for another last minute/ week day dinner or lunch, or in the summer, when the patio is open.

So- where does that leave me? Well, after Friday night, I spent the entire Saturday in reflexive mode, pretty much made my final decision, and then drove all the way to Peterborough in the storm to see my psychic (don't you roll your eyes at me, this guy is for real).  After our chat, I felt WAY better about my decision, and super excited for the months ahead.  I don't want to give you any spoilers, so let me just advice you to check back regularly.

Have a wonderful week y'all, and for those out with the kids (or friends) tomorrow for Halloween, indulge in a little childish pleasure (yep, that means a couple "fun sized" chocolate bars).
Boo!

Quite possibly the romantic restaurant in Toronto. Super cute little cafe, open for lunch and dinner. I came here not on a date, but with some girlfriends for a much needed catch up. We shared the baked Camembert, which was delicious, and I had the mushroom salad for a main. I'm don't usually love endive, but with the mushrooms, it all worked well. Would definitely come again.

I really enjoy the atmosphere of this restaurant, it's intimate but simple and the staffis friendly. I've tried most of their Scrolls (like a wrap but bigger and more culinary)and all are pretty good. I do wish they'd change their menu at some point, though. Once you've been therea few times, there's just nothing new to grab your interest. Don't get me wrong, though, what's there is good. So's the coffee, too, cinnamon spiced.
