The elegant and bright King’s Café on Augusta south of Nassau is a wonderful Asian vegetarian/vegan restaurant with a delicious selection of freshly made dishes, served by terrific staff, at reasonable prices. A must go-to oasis!. Author: gastroflaneur. I love traveling and posting here Special Meals as well as great & cheap Good Eats oases along the way
Kings Cafe is one of the latest coffee shops to spring up in East Vancouver and one of the few places that serves alcohol. Like the words decorated on the window, “Good Things Happen Over Coffee, Beer and Wine,” it speaks to the vibe you feel inside. Relaxed, comfortable and an oasis for students to go and study, all over what is offered inside. Having been commuting past this busy big street for years, it’s a nice to see a proper coffee shop addition to the neighbourhood.
just so so. Food is tasteless. Especially pan fried radish pastry! Small soup is enough for two people. If you eat alone, order the XS one. Sao mai is no favor at all. the only taste good thing is fried chicken.
I am a vegan. I loved this Restaurant! Staff are friendly, food is out if this world, price is fantastic!
Highly recommended!
Delicious vegetation food that could fool your non vegetarian friends, great service, fantastic prices, what more could you ask for! I definitely recommend this place!!
Love this place! Delicious food, extensive menu, reasonably priced, clean modern restaurant, attentive staff. Couldn't ask for more. The food is amazing and tastes brilliant every time.
Unique ambience compared to most Asian places. Food is medicore. But service is exceptional. Without asking we were reimbersed for ovecooked food. Service is worth going back for a second time.
Delicious, healthy. I liked this place better when I wasn't gluten-free (the faux meats are amazing) but it is consistently delicious and there's always something new to try. Can't find better for veggies.
Family of four went to King's Cafe, ordered the Lemongrass Fried rice which was excellent! As well as BBQ Seitan, Soy drumsticks, Crispy Duck Seitan, and Singapore noodles. All dishes were amazing! Our top faves were the Lemongrass Rice and the BBQ Seitan! Totally recommend this place to anyone who loves well balanced flavors that aren't too heavy.
Great menu. Stumbled upon this place late one night when everything else in Kensington was closed. I usually can't eat much on a vegetarian menu because of a soy allergy, but their menu had many soy-free choices. We were pleasantly surprised--food was delicious, tea was amazing, and the service was fast and attentive. Simple, modern decor, and very clean. One of the best places to eat in Kensington.
A True Delight. Everything you can ever dream of for a vegetarian like myself. They're Faux Duck with the Teriyaki Plum sauce is an absolute favourite of mine, but I am hoping of trying some of they're other more delectable menu item. Plus, you can buy some of they're ingredients in the little grocery section of they're restaurant. I always get the Faux Bacon when ever I get the chance to go up there. It is a real vegetarian treat, even if you're not. I say GO!
When I first walked in, I didn't really know what to do. Was it seat yourself? Do you order at a counter? I opted for seating myself. The service was a bit slow and they got my order wrong but when everything was sorted out, it was really delicious. They have a few gluten-free options which is good because I'm celiac.
Really nice people who work here, love this place. The bentos are a really good deal though whenever i come here i always get the faux bbq duck and hot and sour soup yumm
Great service, heaps of choices and the food is great! I would recommend it
This restaurant has a nice contemporary feel to it. In the heart of the Kensington market. The large windows open fully in the summer to allow a gentle breeze flow throughout. The food is amazing. Most dishes are vegan. I have had a combination plate both times I have been here. Teriyaki cutlets were outstanding. Combo comes with hot/sour soup, salad, soy protein nuggets and a spring roll. All were very good. My daughter had a sushi plate and it was wonderful. My wife tried the ginger soy chycken and although it seemed liked it drowned in ginger, it tasted fantastic. The fresh veg juice cocktail was fresh and delicious (carrot/beet/apple/ginger). The menu specializes in many Chinese dishes, that use textured soy protein. The kicker is that they really know how to prepare this stuff very well so that it tastes incredible. I highly recommend this restaurant. For the health conscious, beware there are some fried foods and some dishes are salty. Very tasty and great atmosphere.
Food is excellent even for non vegetarians. Large variety of dishes and every one of them tastes great.
Even Good for Carnivores. Even if you think that no meal is complete without meat, a meal at King's Cafe will satisfy you.
Enoki mushrooms... eggplant... these things don't usually seem exciting to non-veggies. However, at this restaurant, you will never feel cheated. The food is so good that you won't even miss the meat. How'd they do that?
Compare King's Cafe to places like Live or Fresh. And neither will leave you as satisfied as this place in Kensington.
Soy nuggets = must-try!. Nicely decorated place with a large menu selection of asian vegetarian food. The soy nuggets that came with the bento box were absolutely delicious - better than real chicken nuggets! Their bento boxes for $12.99 are a good deal and comes with a main entree, purple rice, salad and two pieces of soy nuggets.
The enoki mushroom balls wrapped with seaweed mentioned in a review below are indeed delicious when hot, but alas, are nauseatingly oily once they cool.
The food is great!!. This is the best vegetarian restaurant in town. The employees are excelent.
Food is 5 stars!!
Enoki Mushroom Balls - Yum!. Delicious! Get the Enoki Mushroom Ball Combo/Bento. I brought a non-vegetarian and he loved it.
Surprisingly tasty. I went to King's Cafe for lunch yesterday with a group from work. One of the girls is vegetarian so we thought we'd try it out. I was a veg'n back in the 80's so I was curious to see how things have changed. Overall I have to say it's more mainstream than it used to be. Lots of faux chicken nuggets must be appealing to kids who grew up on McDs. There's a heavy reliance on deep fried faux meats, which is fine if that's what you're looking for. I remember veg restaurants back in the day being more experimental and health conscious. However, the food at Kings Cafe is tasty and if you like chinese food this is a nice alternative to the usual pork and chicken dishes.
King's has great food, it's not just for vegetarians. I've taken my whole family and even the picky eaters loved it.
Great vegetarian restaurant. This place does a really great job of making tasty vegetarian food. My favourite is the spicy eggplant with a side order of purple rice. For apps, I usually get either the soy nuggets or soy drumsticks. The portions are always quite generous and the price is just right. Highly recommended.
In my opinion, the best vegetarian restaurant in Toronto. Great food, great environment, and great service.
I really enjoyed my experiance there. I went on April 16 2009. I thought that the food combinations were outstanding. The chicken nuggets were full of flavour. I'd have to say that I liked it better than real chicken. And I'm not even a vegan. This is Anthony saying that I give this resturant an 8 out of 10. I thought that the idea of no pop or alcohol was not a good decision. I really needed a beer today. And that they brought one very thin napkin today. That being said the overall look of the resturant was very classy. Great place to eat. A new favorite..
Soy ice cream. If you've got a friend (or family, in my case) who doesn't eat dairy products, King's Cafe is a good bet.
They have vegan desserts!
King’s Cafe meets the need of the Chinese food lovers and the vegetarian food lovers. (Interestingly, although it serves Chinese food, the restaurant does not have a Chinese name, like the ones in Chinatown nearby). The answer becomes clear when we enter the restaurant. It is obvious that this restaurant has successfully fit into the Kensington Market milieu and its multi-cultural clientele. The ambiance is simple, but refreshing. Soft music plays in the background. The atmosphere is very inviting. At one corner, there is a display of an assortment of tea and vegetarian products and they are also for sale. The menu included sushi, dim sum, rice and noodles, and a good selection of entrees. We ordered a fried rice, and four main courses to share. The rice arrived first. The rice was light and not greasy, and added ingredients such as goji berries, endame and dried bean curd enhanced both the texture and the taste of this dish. When the Veggie Duck with Plum Sauce was served,
Yes, I love King’s Cafe, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t tried it before, especially if you’re a vegetarian.
It doesn't matter what time you go to King's Cafe, you can always get a seat! This is a regular spot my dad and I visit because they have a great vegan and gluten free menu. We always order hot and sour soup (a medium is more then plenty for 2 people and it's super cheap), a California roll which is avocado, rice and seaweed (not sure what they put in the rice but it's soooo delicious and lastly we always get crystal rolls.
Next time you're in Kensington Market, be sure to stop by this place for lunch or dinner!
Vegetarian Chinese food. Affordable and tastey. Sometimes the wait staff is a tad rude.
