What an awesome brunch spot! Inside, it's really cozy and comfortable and the service is absolutely spot on. We had the Spanish fried rice and fried chicken thigh sandwich. I'd go back in a heartbeat for both.
The only thing holding this back from a 5 is I found it a bit pricey but still, can't recommend County General enough.
Next, the Crispy Pig Ears arrived. I believe I have had fried pig ears before but not in this fashion. The pig ears were fried and definitely crispy and a little spicy. There was a container of sauce made of maple syrup, scallion, and spicy mayo. Mmm, this was absolutely divine!! The crispy pig ears were like potato chips, once you start, you just can’t stop! There were such delectable and tasty snacks that completely satisfied my taste buds’ preference for salty and savory bite-sized snacks. The combination of spicy mayo, scallion, and maple syrup was also an absolute perfect sauce. I absolutely loved this!
This is our second time here - after a phenomenal first time visit (after months of following their delicious Instagram account). I like that they have mainstay favourites, mixed with rotating seasonal dishes. The Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich definitely lives up to the hype - both crispy and moist without being too greasy. The Fried Chicken Benedict is as decadent as it sounds. A perfect Sunday brunch treat. The service was also fast and friendly. Definitely recommend!
Stopped in for a late lunch with friends. Two of us had the brisket burger special with salad or fries and two of us had the falafel with kale salad. We all enjoyed the freshness and flavors. The burger with salad wasn't a lot of food, but the fries were a good sized portion and the falafel was larger. Service was good. We will be back again!
Stopped in here on my first week in the city and i was impressed but almost everything.
The Man behind the bar made a pretty damn good old fashioned while the kitchen put out a divine duck cassoulet and fried chicken thigh. the only disappointment was the terrible coffee
With the warm weather upon us, long walks through Trinity Bellwoods Park are a must... and so is brunch!
The County General lives up to the all the buzz and talk you've all been hearing. It's a tiny restaurant located in a big city - steps from the park - serving farmer inspired dishes, with a rustic decor and plating and a fantastic menu.
For all brunch lovers out there, looking for a homey breakfast done right, using fresh ingredients, The County General is the place to be at.
According to their site: "We make great food, inspired and supplied by Ontario farms and producers, bringing flavor to the forefront of honest cooking, welcoming every one of you as friends and family, and always serving up a good time. We hope you’ll call the County home!" - We feel they live up to this statement!
Last Sunday was the very first nice day of Spring, all of the patios were rammed. We decided to stop-in here for some eats and I'm glad we did. Everywhere was busy and we had to wait a bit for a table, but that was expected.
Starting off with some Mocktails, we tried the Lucky Luciano (Fresh squeezed OJ, black walnut, chocolate bitter, vanilla & ginger beer) and a Ginger Lemonade. Both equally refreshing and an explosion of flavour, due to the clever mix of ingredients.
The cocktail list is very creative too. They have Happy Hour every Mon- Thurs 5:00pm - 6:30-pm ($6 cocktails, $3 beers and $2 Apps*) Happy Hour Menu
Apparently, you can "chow down on whole suckling pig"; we got adventurous and tried out the Crispy Pig Ears (Spicy remoulade and maple) - very brave but we enjoyed the dish.
Also, we had the Chocolate Chip Pancake, Buttermilk Cheddar Scones, Pan Roasted Fall Veggies and the Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich. All of the dishes we shared; we both loved the pancake and the chicken sandwich the most.
This place is a great Spring/Summer hangout. Very small place with high traffic, so be patient. Our server was very friendly.
Hands down my favourite sneaky restaurant in the city. Amazing culinary creations coming out of such a small Toronto kitchen. Also, the cocktails are to die for. The County General has one of the best selections of liquor in their bar in the city. I highly recommend anyone to this place for a beautiful and creative time.
Favourite!. First time I went here I must admit the service was a bit wishy washy - however since then I have no complaints! Great service, great food and great drinks!! love love lovee!!! The KFC chicken is a must have! Oh and their music /playlists are great too!
Perfect. I mean it. My girlfriend and I have lived in the area for a few years and every time we visit this place it just gets better and better. The staff is amazing, the cocktails are brilliant, especially for those of us who enjoy induldging in darker spirits, and then there's the food.
Here's hoping the fried chicken for two never leaves Toronto's dining landscape.
While the food is flavoursome, it leaves you wanting more - literally. The portions are too small. Service was pleasant but not outstanding. The food, albeit not a lot, wins the vote.
Delicious. I've had several meals at County Kitchen and although I never feel like I'm having a very healthy meal I have always loved the food- one of my first choices on a splurge day! Personal fav is the chicken thigh sandwich. Pretty good coffee as well but they don't have any sort of drip coffee (ie no free refills).
Fried Chicken Sandwhich. Well-seasoned, crispy yet juicy. Not a bad lunch bite
Chicken sandwhich is absolutely delectable. I've had it every time I go here. Portion size is great too, not too huge.
Fried chicken sandwich is amazing! The cilantro and avocado make this dish superb. The fries have some good kick to them too.
Terribly Delicious Food... Terribly Terrible Service. County General has won my "like" vote based solely on how good their food was. To counter that, however, my friend and I received service from the waiter that was horrific to the point where it was actually funny.
Let's start with the food - I ordered the Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich, which was small, but mouth-watering. Very reminiscent of KFC style chicken - made gourmet of course! =P It was topped with lettuce, some sort of house mayo, and avocado spread. I loved it.
To drink I ordered the sweetened Iced Tea (also made in-house), and it was the perfect refreshment for the +30C heat we were having!
My friend had the Eggs Benedict and enjoyed it too.
As for the service... Oh boy....
First off, the waiter started taking our order while SIMULTANEOUSLY cashing out the table right next to us. Shouldn't you finish off one task before moving on to the next?
He then proceeded to count his money in front of us while listening to our questions about the food, with a grand finale of a massive sigh of displeasure, derived from the mediocre tip that the above-mentioned table had left him.
With his attention now fully devoted to addressing our questions, we began to inquire about the menu items.
He rolled his eyes at nearly every question. Here's a little excerpt:
My friend: "What kind of fries do the Eggs Benedict come with?"
Waiter: "They're just fries"
My friend: "Oh ok... but are they home fries?" (fair question, given that home fries ARE usually served with brunch)
Waiter: "Just regular ass fries bro, do you want them or not?"
Wow.... we nearly died laughing. lol
Great Brunch!. Had a great brunch there the other week. Showed up at noon. Wait was about 30 mins. They call your cell. Very small, narrow space. Atmosphere was fine. The croque madame was very good. The banana bread French toast was off the chart decadent! Service wasn't great. It's definitely worth checking out. Plus the price is right vs Victor's other location ;)
Second time and although the small room and crap shoot seating is a bit annoying, the food is amazing. Simple menu but great ingredients beautifully cooked with drinks under $100. Really a fantastic place. A pleasure to have in the hood.
Good! Try it out.. Went for brunch and had the croque monsieur and IT BLEW MY MIND! lol seriously, it was very good and the service was excellent. If you don't mind shelling out a bit more for a nice brunch then I would def recommend. I wish it was a bit larger though as sometimes you have to wait for awhile. Cool thing is that they will take your number and call you when a table opens.
In the mood for something a little more casual we stumbled upon The County General , the joint I’ve been meaning to check out for some time for the famed fried chicken thigh sandwich. I must say I really love the décor. Panels of wood line the ceiling leading to an impressive wall of jenga-like blocks with the signature white coq serving as the focal point. Mr. Pig makes an appearance alongside with “Eat Me” scribbled on the chalkboard he holds up. Atop the bar shelves you’ll find heads of various carnivores adorned with the likes of sunglasses. I thought they were quite cute. The rectangular restaurant does not allow for a whole lot of seating though the space seems more accommodating towards large groups than small ones. The young staff here are all very easy-going and while I wouldn’t call them inattentive, they work at their own pace. We opted to start with the Trio of Steamed Pork Buns ($12) with green apple slaw, avocado chutney and kimchee
After getting up super early to be at Ontario Place for Sylvia's bf, Morton's triathlon, we needed something to eat that would hit the spot. On the way home, we passed by The County General and thought that perhaps this could be the spot. As soon as we got in, we were seated at one of the 5 (or 6) 2 person tables. There are also about 10 seats at the bar and 6 or 7 outside. As luck would have it, they had room for the three of us. Half an hour before we finished our meal, a line started to form. It was quite a modern looking restaurant, with chic lines and lots of wood. The music included 90s classics such as Postal Service and Radiohead. Oh, the memories! It was a great ambiance overall with the music and the chatter around us. Not too loud but loud enough. Bloody ceasar Mimosa They have great drinks so I started with a mimosa which was, well, a mimosa. Nothing special, you know, orange juice and bubbly. Seeing as it was freaking 12$, I would have liked something more...exceptiona
...we decided to gear our direction toward a little gem called The County General. We were there during their Happy Hour (4pm-6pm) . There were about 6 of us, so we literally decided to get each and every items on their happy-hour menu. Our waiter couldn't be happier. If I was serving a table that wanted everything on the menu, I would be skipping and singing all the way to the kitchen. ATMOSPHERE : I'm going through a phase of loving small-with-great interior restaurants and The County General happened to be perfect. The place had a very warm and homy feeling. Surrounded by awesome exposed wood work. I especially love the plates and napkin setting on the table. I find those two are some of the most pivotal points when it comes to co

We were walking around the Queen West area looking for somewhere casual to go for dinner. We stumbled upon the County General . A small, intimate, yet homely restaurant which only has a few tables. They serve up some classic North American dishes with a slight Asian twist. I started with the CALAMARI TACO. The soft taco was packed full of lime creme, black bean sliced calamari and crispy green onions. They serve it with a slice of fresh lime and a bottle of hot sauce for those who like their food with a bit more heat. It was loaded with flavour but very messy to eat. AM started with the PORK PLATE. He loves pork but he was a little disappointed by the dish. The grilled pork belly was crispy and cooked beautifully he wished they had given him more. Unfortunately he was less impressed by the headcheese and crackling pork skin. He found bo
The Colonel Club was very refreshing with apple slices within : ) My friends that got the Fried Chicken Sandwich said the chicken was very tender too.
The white bean meatball sandwich ($10) was more decadent and authentic than I really expected. It resides somewhere between the taste profiles of an Italian fried sandwich, luscious and virgin tomato sauce adding the strongest flavour, with a hint of the old South, with a crisp and oil deep fried shell, and a thick slab of soft bread.
We started lunch by sharing the homemade White Bean Ham and Mustard Soup. This was soo good. I loved how fresh it was with the crispy croutons, fresh basil and cilantro on top. Ya, we loves this!
The clear winner of the night was the fried chicken thigh sandwich. It arrived on a slice of bread rather than a bun (which I actually prefer) and was perfect. Fried Chicken. Guacamole. Cilantro. Onions. I love each individually and together they were an amazing few bites.
This is a cute little restaurant and they had a pretty cool bar with different kinds of bourbons and rums. We ordered the chicken thigh sandwich and the Croque Madame. They were both very tasty. The only complaint was that the fries and ketchup were a bit too salty, but I would definitely return to this on
The burger was absolutely wonderful! The meat is ground up in house and the 6oz patty was thick, juicy, flavourful. With the addition of the cheddar, the sublime juices just ran down my hand. The milk bun has a nice texture and an overall a fantastic burger.
The burger came with handcut chips and home made tomato sauce which was beautifully smoky.
The food is good and there's definitely a vibe. I'll be back!
What really caught my eye is not the menu list. The County General offered Canadian comfort food (Burgers, Reuben sandwiches, Steak Frites, etc). What compelled me to come and check it out were the images of the restaurant interiors. The restaurant could very well be my place. The design of the interiors beckoned me as it was all centered to showcase wood, giving the interiors a rich and cozy feel.
The grilled patty came out a perfect medium rare, and was absolutely outstanding.
Finally made my way to The County General for Brunch, previously Oddfellows location. I have heard so much about their Chicken Sandwich and also their Croque Madame which is voted Best Breakfast Sandwich by Toronto Life. Love how they got rid of the long communal table from Oddfellow days, it just open up the space instantly with the tables push to one side and the long bar at the back... the long strips of wood on the ceiling and behing the bar just lengthen the place visually (^_^) Love the tea towel as napkin together with the rooster plate Spiked Hot Apple Cider & Muskoka Double chocolate Stout Croque Madame $14 ~ Country Ham, Grilled Bread, Bechamel, Fried Egg w/Fries The ham is slow smoked in house and it's delicious with the messy yolk.... Yummm, this sandwich is best eaten with a knife and fork. Really live up to it's name as one of the Beat Breakfast Sandwich in Toronto Even their fries are very well seasoned and love the slightly spicy housemade ketchup Fried Chicken Tight Sa
The County General lives up to the all the buzz and talk you've all been hearing. Its a tiny restaurant located in a big city, serving farmer inspired dishes, with a rustic decor and plating and a fantastic menu.
They have a really fun and tasty take on some southern comfort food in every dish on the menu.
So since hearing that the chef of Splendido (a friend of a friend) was opening a new restaurant in the city, I was very interested in checking it out. I could see that the menu was very simple, and the space was very small (seats 30), and based on its Queen St W. address, I had a feeling it would be a fun young spot worth checking out on a Saturday night.
So, this place doesn't take reservations, and the line ups can apparently be incredibly long. Luckily, we got lucky and got a table right away. The drink menu was pretty intriguing, with lots of delicious sounding choices.
We tried:
Punch 'N' Pie: El Dorado 12yr, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Pumpkin Puree, Apple Cider, Fresh Nutmeg 15
Private's OrderX 2: Havana 7yr, Basil, Pomegranate, Lemon and Angostura over ice
Cherry Mint Jubilee (not on menu)
As you can probably guess by the "X 2" factor, the best of the bunch was by far the Privates Order. It was perfectly balanced, while I found the others a bit too strong for my tastes.
Okay lets move to food. We tried:
White Bean, Ham and Mustard Soup
This was probably the best thing I had all night. The pork was tender, the beans were perfectly cooked and I could have eaten those crispy crunchy croutons all night long. My only complaint was that it was a wee bit salty (which seemed to be the theme of the night).
Vegan Potato Leek Soup
While I can't complain too much, because it WAS advertised as vegan, I definitely felt like this soup was missing something, likely butter or cream.
Smoked Pork Belly & Steamed Buns: Kim Chi, Avocado Chutney, Green Apple Slaw
So this was pretty delicious, each pork belly-bun sandwich topped with a different condiment: one slaw, one kim chi, one chutney, the best of the bunch being the slaw in my opinion. Again, the pork was deliciously cooked, and the buns were light and fluffy.
The General’s Reuben: Smoked Peppercorn Brisket, Braised Cabbage, Gruyere, Country Rye, County Dressing and Fries
A good sized main, but everything was incredibly over seasoned. Even though the fries were cooked perfectly, all I could taste was salt, and while I only got a bite of the sandwich, it seemed to be suffering from the same misfortune.
We opted not to go for dessert, as the offerings were not particularly exciting (cookies, cupcake and apple pie- meh), and we figured we would go get some chocolate smores at Moroco. Having said that, I thought the meal was still pretty enjoyable, and I would return based on the appealing menu, and hopes that the salt issue was just an unusual happening.
I've been here a few times both for lunch and dinner. I prefer dinner better so I can indulge more. The food here is mouth watering. There are 2 dishes I would like to highlight. The Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich. This little number will turn you to the dark side, as in never to eat white meat on a sandwich again. It's incredibly moist, juicy, and toppings really pull all the flavours together (avocado chutney, cilantro, and pickled onions). The bun they use is also soft and squishy so you can get everything from top to bottom in one bite!
Next is the "KFC" Chicken For Two. The KFC stands for Korean Fried Chicken. And boy do they do it right. This dish will take over your entire table. Kraft paper is laid down and they basically dump an entire chicken (chopped up into crispy bite sized pieces) on your table. They are tossed with 2 different sauces so one side is hoisin tossed and the other is a more a garlicky one. The final touch is a sprinkle of sesame seeds, cilantro and an advocado aioli. You also get Chinese steamed buns in case that wasn't enough food for you.
The drinks are nice and boozy and the service is laid back. Works well with their vibe.
Will be back. I just wish I had more room in my tummy!
Cute cozy country spot in an otherwise super hipster part of town. Awesome drinks and quality food. I went in for brunch and had the pancake but was really disappointed with how small it was. Gimme more!
I did find County General a little pricey for what we got but the service was great.
Great service and interesting menu. The fried chicken and burger were highlights, while the caesars were delicious. Good brunch option too. They have a small patio with single bar-style seating - not much room but great for people watching when the weather is nice.
The County General lives up to the all the buzz and talk you’ve all been hearing. Its a tiny restaurant located in a big city, serving farmer inspired dishes, with a rustic decor and plating and a fantastic menu.
For all brunch lovers out there, looking for a homey breakfast done right, using fresh ingredients, The County General is the place to be at. As the weather warms in this rather cold city, I long for those warm Sundays where the act of “brunching” becomes a fundamental part of one’s weekend.
I would describe brunch at The County General as tasty and comforting with a “farmy” feel to it. Their Croque Madame is certainly representative of that and a crowd pleaser with a decadent cheese melting conception. The Croque Madame is simply a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with a twist. The twist being the soft béchamel sauce, the use of hand crafted specialty cheeses and the added element of a fresh sunny side-up egg. Served with your choice of french fries or salad, this sandwich is melted ooey-gooey goodness on a hard-wood cutting tray. Although sandwiches seem to be what drives the Toronto crowds to the County General, it seems their big hit, whether for brunch, lunch or dinner is still the infamous Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich.
This sandwich has been praised and talked about all over the city, and its popularity does match its taste. I mean, who would have thought of taking tender pieces of chicken thighs (which in my mind are the best part of a chicken), soaking them in buttermilk, then frying them to perfection and assembling in a mix of avocado chutney, pickled red onions and coriander (aka cilantro), on a milk bun…truly mouth-watering. The way to eat this sandwich is by squeezing the top bun down until the master piece is bite-able, and then sinking your teeth into what ‘s about to become a great brunching experience.
Last but not least, I would like to give an honorary mention to County General’s Eggs Benny. Although I can attest I have had better eggs benny experiences, such as the one from the already closed Hoof Cafe (thanks for ruining me for life btw); I would say CG’s Eggs Benedict are quite good and worth the try. They tend to be more rustic and dry than your typical benny, but the hollandaise is quite fresh and tasty and the eggs are done just right. So if you are a Benedict fan, you would not go wrong with these.
As a parting thought, I would also like to give a mention to CG’s coffee. I had one of the best cappuccinos there. Their coffee is done to perfection and the milk is frothy and fresh. So much so, that I even doubled on my coffee order that day!
Buen Provecho,
Foodies Inked.
A popular Queen West place to grab lunch, dinner or a cocktail. The music is loud but the servers are friendly. If you want a light meal, you can’t go wrong with the County Salad, a plate piled high with butter lettuce topped with seasonal veggies, shallot vinaigrette, old cheddar and peanuts (if you want a bigger one, just ask for the 'big, big salad'). The Kale Salad is also a great bet, with loads of parm, lemon and anchovies. For something heavier, the chicken thigh sandwich and burger are very popular. The showstopper, however, is the fried chicken. Watch the servers cover your table with craft paper and ‘plate’ the chicken right before your eyes. Lots of sauces in squeezy bottles. Cocktails are crafty (the tonic in the g&t is homemade). Great rum selection if you’re a rum lover.
Came here for Sunday Brunch. There was room on the patio - which is one long communal table, set up as a perfect place to people watch, if you're into that. The the Americanos were amazing, but took longer than our food! I had the eggs benny and was super happy with my choice. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Loved that you could have half fries, half salad. I will definitely be back! I just hope the coffees are quicker next time.
