Majority of the table opted for The Big Schnitz, offered in the form of either chicken or pork. It was a plentiful portion that many noted to be of greater value than the typical Winterlicious trios.
My own picks of French Onion & Ale Soup (taken from the Goose Island Brewhouse menu) and Beet & Quinoa Salad were a far cry from the standard pub fare at other ends of the quadrilateral. It garnered a few quick glances at first, but wasn't fundamentally too out of character.
The name says it all!
A group of us went to "Bier Markt" for drinks and to catch up.
They have a great selection of beers on tap and in no time we had our selections in front of us. After a few pints, we were a bit peckish and decided on some burgers which were very tasty indeed.
We had an enjoyable night out!
Love the range of beer they have to offer. It's a chilled out place, having great ambience, good music and food. The onion rings were slightly salty but they were juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, the sweet potato fries were super comforting.
I love this place for various reasons the decor , beer selection, food quality and great service. The variety of beer available at this place is awesome, I have not seen a collection of beer so vast at a restaurant. Its definitely heaven for beer lovers with so much options to chose with and try.
One can always find something to eat here with a pint of beer, though the food selection is not as huge as the beer section. But still the food quality is good. I have hosted few office dinners as well here and have loved the service provided by the staff.

Great choice of beer—there's a type for everyone! Good options for food as well (but can be on the pricier side), amazing fondue. Go here if you're craving different types of beer but be ready to spend more money.
This was my first experience eating at this restaurant. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. It's extremely dark in the restaurant but we luckily sat near the window. It was somewhat crowded where we sat but we made the most of it. My boyfriend had the burger which he loved. They accidentally gave him french fries but came out 5 minutes later with onion rings for him. I had the potato flat bread pizza. It was different and not something I'd typical choose. Overall it was pretty good.Their drink menu is nice and large which always nice.
I was treated to a nice meal here over the weekend. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Burger ($20) which is described as "sushi-grade tuna with sesame and soy marinade, wasabi aioli, napa cabbage and cucumber slaw" with a side of Markt fries. The burger was really tasty. The patty was really interesting and I definitely enjoyed it. The toppings brought a nice balanced flavour as well. I ordered gravy on the side that went great with the fries. Add a few Hawaiian made Kona Golden Wave Ales and away you go!
Was here with the team a couple of days back. Great fun place to hang out. Not many veg options though. They serve with a smile. If you are looking to Hangout with friends as a group would recommend this place. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, they love the blue jays
The Little Red Spoon
+4.5
The beer selection is excellent here. Very large beer menu, anyone could find something they like, even someone that doesn't particularly like beer (or doesn't think they like it) could find something.
The food was very good, no complaints there. This would be a great place to have a bunch of beers and apps. I am a vegetarian and there wasn't too too much on the menu for me but I adore cheese so I was satisfied with my baked brie and vitagreens salad.
The baked brie was delicious and the crispy quinoa croutons on the salad were very interesting.
We sampled a couple different beers. The service was pretty good. Only problem was we were sitting beside the sidewalk and were bothered for change twice during our meal by people panhandling.

Fab beer list and atmosphere. Kids welcomed but I'd recommend avoiding busy weekend nights. Favorite dishes include the wurst board, poutines and calamari. Stroller friendly!
All the bad reviews here I think are based on ordering dinner. We ordered brunch and had nothing but praise for the food. The Bavarian Benedict and the Brioch French Toast were completely delicious. The service was good, nothing to write home about. The lack of either freshly-squeezed Orange juice or OJ with pulp was disappointing, I'll admit, but the various cocktails almost made up for it. I'd go again for the brunch definitely.
AMAZING ALL AROUND!!!!!. Everything about this place rocks!! The service is some of the best service I've experienced in all of my years living and dining in T.O. Very attentive, knowledgable and friendly. My recommendations on which bier to pair with my meal was a slam dunk and a never knew a beer could complement a meal so nicely until then and In terms of desert it's not a night well ended until you've treated yourself to one of there deserts :0 honestly I rarely go out and order desert but I'm do glad I did. you can taste the freshness of every ingredient and it's just the right touch of sweetness you need after a good meal to satisfy those sweet cravings. Job well done Bier Markt esplanade I'll be back very soon!'
Went in before a event for some dinner downtown. Was thoroughly amazed with the food and service. Not to mention there beer selection. Even ended up back there the same night. Had a amazing fondue and charcuterie to start. Great portion of lovely charcuterie and really tasty fondue. Loved it.
Great Beer - Poor Food Choices. The Bier Markt definitely tries to replicate the "German-style beer hall" type atmosphere and they for sure have loads of selection to choose from. However, the food options are few and far between.
Definitely would recommend a go if you've never been.
Local Bar. I live in the neighbourhood and have been coming here since I moved to Toronto. Thursday nights are my favourite. This past week, the band that played was great. The vibe is always good, and the crowd perfect. My only complaint is that Dekonick is no longer on tap! Other than that, I love this place!
Great Selection of Beers. I cannot believe the selection of Trappist beers that this place has. I normally stick to the Chimay's. The server encouraged me to try the Westveelrten 12, the story behind it is very interesting. If one is looking for great service, educated staff and a vast selection of beer, this is the place to go.
This place is sick. Huge beer menu and awesome food. Even their desserts are made in house from scratch. Had the pork shanks with Palm beer from Belgium then shared a charcuterie platter with friends. Great all around. Service was great and the servers were very helpful with knowledge of beer and food. Will be back!
Good beer menu. Well, the beer menu is great, for sure. however I needed some appetizer to go with the beer. I had mini salmon burgers and it was really disappointing. It was tasteless and a somewhat cold. I didn't go there for the food anyways. Beer menu is great!
Fondue!. Went there recently for the Fondue Feastivul and it was great! I ordered a pint of Stiegl with my 'Croque Und Monsieur' Fondue order. I'm a vegetarian so I asked them to HOLD THE HAM in the grilled cheese you get to dip in the fondue-- could've ordered a more vegetarian-friendly fondue option but, alas I adore Gruyere too much. The Bier Markt is by far one of my favourite places to take my husband. [He thinks I'm humoring him when really it's my pleasure.] Fantastic European beer selection.
Great for drinks!. A great place for drinks! Don't bother with the food.
Beer and mussels. good stuff. Whenever I'm in Toronto, I make a point to stop here. It's the must-do on my list.
Quality beer selection as the name would imply and great mussels. The beer will keep any beer snob happy. Do yourself a favor and order a pot of mussels - yes they bring the pot to your table. The rest of the food is OK, not spectacular. If you're going here for the food though you're in the wrong place. You go here for the beer, then have some food to sustain you so that you can drink more beer.
The Name Says It All. If you are looking for a HUGE selection of beer - this is a hot spot. Mind you . . . it will cost you to boast your uniqueness of taste! You will find everything from lambics, trappists to standard imports and domestic light brews. This is a place you can bring a chick, or your burly stout swaylin' buddy Sven.
The seating inside - mediocre. At times the bar is the only seating available if you choose not to be in the dining area. The patio is great, but more often than not there is a waiting list to be seated. This place is a hot spot for the over 25's and under 50's. And in the evening and summer days - it gets packed. Be warned.
On to the food - expensive, and tiny. My husband and I EAT. We ordered the sausage platter for 2, he ate most of it and we went for sandwiches when we left. "Kids . . . go for the beer. "
It's a fun adventurous splurge to try "liquid newness." If you want your old standby - go to your local pub. If you're hungry, hit the "Mustache" at the St. Lawrence Market around the corner.
Better for drinks than food. The food here is ok, but better to come here for late-night/after work drinks than to actually come for the food.
My fiancé went on a Saturday @ 5pm for an early dinner. We had a reservation. No lineups. Got a table right away. Our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable. Free Wi-Fi. Great atmosphere. I had the Snitzel. It was AMAZING. My fiancé had the sea bass. She loved it. I also had the poutine. It wasn't so great. The beer selection is incredible. I had a sampler and a pint of Staten. Very smooth beer. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Nice afternoon spot. Enjoyed lunch with friends
Salads were HUGE and very delicious
Chicken flat bread was ok but a bit bland
Burger was a la carte.. thought for the price it could have came with some friends
Beer selection was great
Well trained server
Would be back again!
Amazing Beer!. The food at the Bier Markt is really overpriced, so I wouldn't go there for dinner. As far as beer goes, AMAZING! Huge selection for all you beer drinkers that think Canadian and Bud are basically bottled piss water. So many great imports. Good live music on Fri and Sat too. No cover, but the line gets long early
Had a meal there last night food was fantastic and the service was great the management came to our table twice (two different managers) to check on us and our meal. The whole atmosphere was lively & professional the room was packed we will definitely return to try out more of the menu Great beer
Patio. Beer and mussel... crowd is so so.
Bier grate, das Menü lousy.
Great fun place to go. We went during their fondue event earlier this month, and had a great time. I love fondues, but normally have difficulty eating more than a few bites due to the heavy one-dimensional taste I associate with the dish. However, the brie & lobster fondue was delicious! I scooped up every last bit and just couldn't get enough of the smooth lobster-flavoured dip!
The mussels (with Stella & sausages) weren't nearly as impressive. The individual flavours weren't put together well at all, so I was tasting either very strong beer (in the broth), bland steamed mussels, or large slices of sausages.
Still, our server was fantastic... engaging, informed and friendly without being overbearing. And the beer selection was beyond impressive. We had a great time, and would probably go back just for the beer and great service.
Presented on an iron cast pot, the sheer size of the serving was impressive. I excitedly dig in and was pleased that the mussels were cooked to perfection. Tender and moist, with a right hint of spicy and smokiness from the chunks of chorizo added to the dish. Valerie was equally happy with her flammekueche and Natalia insisted I should try a sliver of her tender spare rib. After the drone of the work week, the dinner at Bier Market surely makes all the work toiling worthwhile. Good food and the company of good friends always me thankful. The next time family visits me, I think this would be part of my Toronto tour. I am sure, just the selection of beer would make my cousin, Dexter and my little sister, Ishy, really really happy they visited me in Toronto.
Come for the beer, stay for the food. A surprisingly tempting selection of menu items awaits and can naturally be paired with a vast selection of beer. A perfect spot for a memorable dinner or a quick bite and a pint after work.
The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and are always pleased to answer whatever questions you may have when it comes to their food or their beer.
With one of the best beer selections in Toronto, it’s no surprise that the Bier Markt has exclusive Canadian availability of Chicago’s Goose Island Honker’s Ale on draught.
I attended a dinner at Bier Markt marking their launch of the beer. But before I get to the dinner, let’s talk about Bier Markt. Their beer selection includes over 150 beers from over 30 different countries. Their comprehensive beer menu is organized by country and contains a handy glossary of beer terms.
Their restaurants are designed like a European brasserie with a similarly themed food menu created to complement their beer offerings. They have an extensive menu with something for everyone – salads, sharing appetizers, cheese boards, seafood, meat, several kinds of schnitzel, Flammekueches (Belgian flatbreads) and even large-format meals which includes a whole-roasted pig for the table.
During our special Goose Island dinner, we were treated to a series of Bier Markt dishes paired with Goose Island beers. We were lucky enough to be guided through each pairing by Executive Chef Michael Cipollo and Brewmaster Brett Porter.
Our first dish was the Salt Spring Mussels – baked Salt Spring BC mussels, smoked bacon & aromatics, herbed bread crumbs & beurre blanc paired with Honker’s Pale Ale. The mussels were one of my favourite dishes of the evening. I’m accustomed to eating mussels in a broth so this rockefeller-like preparation was a pleasant surprise. I loved the smokiness from the bacon and the crispy crumb topping.
The Honker’s Pale Ale, which has a subtle apricot flavour, complemented the mussels nicely as it wasn’t too overpowering.
Up next was the Beet Trio – roasted crimson beet, cider poached golden beet, shaved stripe beets, pickled breakfast radish, crisp quinoa croutons, goat cheese coulis & red beet vinaigrette paired with the Sofie Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale. I love beets so needless to say, I really enjoyed this salad. It had a nice variety of beets and the crispy quinoa croutons were a very original (and delicious!) addition to the salad.
10% of the Sofie is barrel-aged for 3 months with orange peel which gives it a subtle citrus flavour. We were told that if it was aged for less than 3 months, it would taste too fresh (like raw orange peels) and any longer than 3 months and it would taste almost rotten. They’ve definitely got it down to a science! I particularly enjoyed this pairing as the light and refreshing Sofie ale and fresh salad played off each other wonderfully.
For our main course, we were served the Short Rib – Leffe Brune Abbey Ale braised certified AAA Angus short rib sous-vide, heirloom baby carrots, grilled asparagus spears, roasted cauliflower puree, caramelized turnip & veal glace paired with the Pepe Nero Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale.
What a delicious piece of meat – fatty (just how I like it!), moist and fall-apart tender. It was a very hearty and comforting dish which required a strong beer that would stand up to the meat. The Pepe Nero accomplished just that. With its black pepper notes, it’s definitely a strong beer that won’t get lost when paired with a bold dish.
Our meal ended with the Dessert Charcuterie – milk chocolate “country pate”, strawberry white peach prosciutto, red velvet “boudin noir”, peach & apple terrine, poached pear, cherry & almond tapenade, chocolate “rye bread” & banana crostini, compressed melon & sweet yogurt which was paired with the Matilda Belgian Style Pale Ale. It was an incredibly creative dessert which replicated components of a charcuterie board in the form of a dessert. It was certainly a fun dessert that’s ideal for sharing.
As the Matilda is aged over 5 years, it’s difficult to make exactly the same each time. Over the years, the beer loses its sweetness and becomes more acidic. Even though we had so many components with our dessert, I felt they did an excellent job choosing the beer pairing.
Needless to say, I had a fantastic evening trying out Bier Markt’s newest menu items and beer offerings. Drop by your nearest Bier Markt and check it out for yourself!
*This was a complimentary meal. The opinions in the post, as always, are my own.*
I liked the simple, well executed food here. The three of us shared the spatchcock chicken for two, and the Provencale mussels. We asked them to leave the tomato concasse out of the mussels. Mussels were lovely and plump, with no hint of overcooked chewiness. Homemade mayo came with the fries. The chicken was good too, with both legs and breast cooked well. Whole roast chicken, especially when not spatchcocked, often suffers from overcooked breasts if the legs are cooked through. Terrific rosti and gravy.
One of the best spots in the city for experiencing unique and exciting beers from all over the world. The Belgian and German selection is definitely their best, with the majority available on tap as well. The Belgian Trappist beers are particularly exquisite, as well as the German wheat beers. The food however is only decent, however their menu has a few standout choices. Overall, the full experience of Bier Markt revolves around their excellent beer menu, arguably one of the best this city has to offer.
This is a great place to go for a fun night with great live music. The dance floor is always packed with people enjoying the night and great music. Bier Markt offers a wide selection of amazing beer and food. The crowd is usually young adults ranging from 25 to 35. Definitely a must do if you feel casual and want to have an awesome night.
Good spot to hang out, decent food option but variety of drinking options. Great music, good crowd, nice vibe for a night out and LIVE MUSIC!
The Bier Markt invited me to a Goose Island Dinner with Goose Island Brewmaster Brett Porter and Bier Markt Executive Chef, Michael Cipollo.Goose Island is a Chicago Brewery on an island populated with lots of Canadian geese, which is how it got its name. Bier Markt is the exclusive carrier of their Honker’s Ale.nBrett was very knowledgeable about all of the beers, and taught us how to properly taste beer.
The first short sniff tells you if there are wrong sulfur compounds that shouldn’t be there. Second sniff is to appreciate full aroma. When you sip, you should move it around your mouth, covering your entire palate with beer.
Got it? Okay, here’s a preview of the new Bier Markt menu paired with beer.Baked Stuffed Salt Spring Mussels from BC. Mussels are stuffed with bacon, herbed bread crumbs and topped with a white butter sauce. Confession: This was the first time that I’ve ever eaten mussels….and I liked them! I don’t think I would’ve eaten them raw, though.Paired with… …Honker’s Pale Ale. This ale was first brewed in 1988, and was the first beer ever made by Goose Island. This is an English bitter style beer that has the scent of apricots.Next up was a super interesting Beet Trio Salad. Roasted crimson beets, cider poached golden beet and shaved candy cane beets. My favourite part of this were the quinoa croutons. The quinoa was ground and fried into delightful, crispy golden puffs. Yum!
This was paired with…Sofie Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale. The bitterness of the ale was offset by the beets. 10% of this beer is barrel ages in a wine barrel. Then, 40 pounds of oranges are packed in for 3 months and gives this beer solid citrus notes. Wild yeast adds “Belgian Magic”. This beer will last in a bottle for 5 years! I really liked this beer and it’s elegant looking wine like bottle.I am not a huge red meat eater, but this 72-hour Short Rib was the best I’ve ever tasted! It was so tender, juicy, and fell right off the bone. This AAA Leffe Brune Abbey Ale braised short rib was cooked slow at a low temperature. This kept all of the yummy juices and flavour locked inside. It was paired with……a dark Pepe Nero Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale. This beer was created to stand up to hearty dishes, and it passed the test! Pepe Nero means black pepper in Italian. It was brewed in 2013 and uses an unsalted dark roast malt in beer, with a large amount of rye. Black pepper is added to the beer during the brewing process.
Last but certainly not least was the amazingly creative Dessert Charcuterie. This board may look like meat, but is entirely dessert. The pate is milk chocolate. The proscuitto is like a grown up peach and strawberry fruit roll up. The red velvet “boudin noir” is a particular favourite of mine.
The “bread” is a banana bread crisp and chocolate “rye” bread. Peach and apple make up the terrine. In the glasses are poached pears, cherry & almond tapenade, and honeyed walnuts. This was so much fun to eat! Chef outdid himself with this one. And it was made even better with beer!
Dessert was paired with….…Matilda Belgian Style Pale Ale. This beer has a 9 day fermentation period. It ages over 5 years and changes overtime. This is one of the most difficult beers that they make…and it was my favourite.
Bier Markt never disappoints!!
Came here to dine-in one evening, was happy to be seated right away considering it was Saturday night. Our waiter was super friendly and very attentive throughout the whole evening. We ordered the wings and calamari to start, and both were delicious! For mains we tried the Pesto Pizza and Brie Burger, we loved them so much that we went back to get them for take-out two days later. Highly recommend! Also love their selection of drinks.
The duck wings have a lot of flavour. The sauce dry rub adds a nice kick.
The brisket burger wasn’t bad and the fries were good but the jus the burger came with didn’t taste like much too be honest. I liked that it came in a pretzel bun though.
We had the pink elephant drink which was delicious!
Bier Markt is an excellent spot whether you are going for a beer and appetizer or for dinner. My current favourite appetizer is the delirium cauliflower bites! If you are lucky enough to go in the summer they have an exceptional patio!
Nice spot with great beer selection. Very spacious inside and its great to catch a game in as there are multiple TVs and screens. I’d recommend trying their 1L stein, believe its only for Oktoberfest but the Weissbier was delicious and very well priced. Interesting and delicious cocktails as well. Service was friendly and fast too. Would recommend.
Very pub place , they have a few itemps to eat , food was good and service was friendly. They offer lots of different styles of beer and the place itself is very spacious.
It was a wonderful afternoon at the Bier Markt in Toronto (The Esplanade location). My husband, son and I...went there for lunch in celebration of Father's Day on: June 29, 2022. It is an upbeat, fun-filled atmosphere. The perfect place to be. We sat outdoors on their lovely patio, enjoying life. All of our food options were VERY delicious. I had the Atlantic Salmon which was super yummy. We would especially like to THANK Mia. R., our wonderful server. She made our visit one that we'll always remember with great happiness. Mia is a true people person. Her most welcoming and beautiful personality makes others feel happy. Mia's contagiously MARVELOUS smile matched the sunny sky. Bier Markt is VERY LUCKY to have such a fine employee because Mia truly takes EXTRA care of her customers. She presents herself in a very classy way. Mia definitely provides a RED CARPET FEELING for everyone. THANK YOU sweet MIA for making our time at the Bier Markt a Wonderful Time. You are appreciated!!
