Review Fune - Toronto

Came here for my birthday, was not disappointed! We particularly love the scallops and their salmon here, melts in your mouth, feels really fresh and taste quite a bit nicer than your average sushi place. And of course with great quality and service comes a greater price tag, more on the pricier side, but not outrageously expensive. We sat on the floating sushi boat bar, and the quality of the sushi is still very good, despite not being made right out from the kitchen, still tasted fresh. Also tried the Udon and wasn’t disappointed, the broth especially smells really nice. Would definitely come back on special occasions!

Quite an expensive place. But it’s a fun experience to sit around a turning table full of boats on water carrying sushi. They also have a menu where you can order more expensive items like the fatty tuna. The fatty tuna sushi is quite nice, but the sashimi is not that fat. Meaning it’s a lower quality cut of the tuna.

The service and quality of the food we received was great. It was a little on the pricier side but worth it. The experience was great especially seeing their rotating sushi boat system. I would highly recommend this place if you want fast service and quality food.

Went here with my entire department for lunch as a farewell lunch. The service was swift and efficient for a large group with limited timing. The lunch prices are amazing, I felt we got amazing value which included a free soup, salad and tea. I thought the food was delicious and everyone loved it. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and will be back for a personal visit soon.

Fune is probably the only place I know that has conveyor-belt sushi. Its my first time in Toronto but the sushi was fresh. The only disappointment is that it wasn't busy that day and not much people were sitting at the sushi bar so it was rotating the same kind of sushi. I was waiting for more of the sushi rolls (it was a torched salmon with mayo that melts right in your mouth) Eventually I never got to taste it again. It a good concept but next time I might go when its a bit more busier(maybe Saturday or Friday night) so I get more choices

Fun experience with decent sushi but lacking in that wow factor for the price. You are paying a premium for the experience of having one of, if not, the only conveyor belt boat sushi restaurant experiences in Toronto. Service was satisfactory and attentive but expected for the price. Sushi variety was average with some exotic options and a range of drink and sake selections at all price points. Each plate is between $4.50 to $8.50 for two pieces, on average. Higher priced items like uni are also available. The uni was tasty enough but not from Japanese waters. I would return annually for the floating boat (Fune) experience, not for the price or quality of fish.

Service were fast and good. I was so surprised by quality of food. Scallops and fishes were not fresh as I expected

Good food, good service - very reliable<br/><br/>We went to Fune for dinner. The service was welcoming and we were quickly shown to a table. We shared a sushi pizza - always a favourite and nicely made. The spicy salmon roll was good, but could have used a bit more heat. The sashimi was also good. Overall, they took good care of us and were efficient at bringing the bill at the end of our dinner. We’ll go back!

The Japanese restaurant was located at the basement level of the building, with three areas of separation: a bar with backless stools, an oval-shaped sushi bar, and table seating. We opted for the second option, as the concept of à la carte items revolving about us on small, wooden boats proved both fascinating and intriguing.<br/><br/>Once seated, we were informed that items could be plucked from the boats as they were traversing along their passageway, and that we would be charged according to the colour of the plate. Unlike Hana, our seats were devoid of a printout that listed these rates. Instead, a series of labelled plates floating atop the waterway informed customers of the associated prices.<br/><br/>Alternatively, customers could also order from the given menu; this was a great option for those craving hot plates such as udon or donburi.

This was definitely the most fun I’ve had in a sushi restaurant in recent memory! Fune Japanese Restaurant is currently the only Japanese restaurant in Toronto that offers “conveyor belt” sushi. What’s more, their conveyor belt sushi is even more unique than the regular ones on a track because these were boats of sushi floating on water around a sushi bar!

We came here because a friend recommended the miso black cod. I was hoping that it would be like the amazing miso black cod that we had at Nobu in NYC. It obviously wasn't as good, and the seasonings were a bit different, but it's certainly one of the best miso black cod I've had in Toronto, so far. Also the piece of fish was surprisingly large for the price. The sushi we had was decent, but a bit overpriced. Service was slow.

Terrible service! <br/>Bad food!<br/>I tried the conveyor belt sushi! It was really bad experience. Most boats were empty. I had to wait 45 minutes to get in and 1 hour for my food to arrive! I do not recommend this place at all.

Thoughtfully prepared dishes in an elegant setting at surprisingly reasonable prices. Most striking feature is the rotating conveyer belt carrying dishes of sushi, sashimi and maki--a feature typical in other cities, but rare in Toronto's downtown core. The circling parade presents a great option if you want to try something new, as most of the dishes on the conveyer belt aren't your standard California roll/salmon sushi. Really enjoyed their scallop maki topped with roe--a delight of cream and salt. Everything prepared thoughtfully and fresh. Often slammed at lunch; reservations not a bad idea.

Great service! Excellent quality! Expert presentation!

Nice Place but Not Authentic--Chefs are not Japanese. The Chinese chefs do not know the proper names of the sushi, or desserts. The fish was decently fresh, but the sushi falls apart when picked up by chopsticks and the rice lacked vinegar. It is obvious that the technique of sushi making at Fune has room for improvement. <br/><br/>The selection of sushi on the boats was limited; we chose a plate of hamachi sashimi (yellowtail), however, it had lost its freshness for being there for so long. In addition, I kept mentioning how the unagi sushi (eel nigiri) looked yummy, and suddenly, the next time it comes around on the boat, it's been microwaved.. (plate cover all steamed up) So, we did not choose it. <br/><br/>We gave them another chance and ordered a sushi sampler (5-pieces; salmon, two tunas, fake crab meat, tai) to have a real taste of their sushi and see their skill. We were extemely dissapointed as they cheaped out on one of their nigiri sushi--fake crab meat, at such a high end restaurant. For their price, the fish should have been extremely fresh (melts in your mouth and leaves a nice aftertaste), but it was not. <br/><br/>Hence, we did not order anything else, and decided to leave after 9 minutes of being there. <br/><br/>Decor was impressive, but that's all there is to it. Service was a bit too friendly (host pulled out the chair and seated you), and there was way too many staff at your beck and call. Private space not respected. <br/><br/>All in all, better than AYCE sushi, but would not recommend or go again.

Went last night, booked two seats at the boats and the experience was fantastic. My sushi lover boyfriend like each of the six plates he tried. They keep the plates on the boats very fresh and it's such a fun yet relaxing dimmed atmosphere. Was worth the $40 price tag at least every once in awhile. Staff is very nice too.

Must try the Chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) from the appetizer menu.<br/><br/>Avoid the deep fried dishes, such as the Tempura and the Pork Katsu Don/Udon/Soba.

Not as impressed as other diners. Although the presentation and decor left me expecting real excellence, I actually was not blown away by Fune's sushi. They way overdid their application of wasabi on their nigiri, between the fish and the rice, which is a pet peeve of mine. Let the diner choose how much wasabi they want (in my case, none at all). Other items beyond sushi were good, but simply not great. I was disappointed with Fune, given its high price point. I would recommend looking elsewhere, but I won't be giving it a "thumbs down", since I've only visited once.

Great for lunch. This place is great for a nice office lunch. Had a great time - make sure you make a reservation because it can get pretty busy.

Fresh. The food is fresh and good! I would give this place 4 stars because the food is delicious and it is authentic food. If you won't eat there and you want to take it home though, you should try it. Good stuff.

Sushi lovers' paradise. This is a good place for sushi lovers. I especially liked the sushi bar. It has a round table with a rotating belt full of all kinds of sushi rolls. This way you can look and choose the dish you want to eat. At the end of you meal, the server counts your plates and charges you accordingly. Ambience is quite nice too. Has very friendly staff. The chefs at the sushi bar interact with you and can prepare your customized sushi roll on request. I paid 27 CAD for my dinner portion. Slightly expensive but worth the experience.
Tami
Expensive, but I loved the atmosphere. We had steak and it was absolutely amazing, medium rare to a tee.
Tye
Expensive but worth it. Best sushi i have ever had and the sushi bar is great
Cris
Five Stars. Every time I go there I impressed the food is always delicious the atmosphere is quiet but active and then you get the bill.....really that's it???? Always a great experience.

Fune is an authentic Japanese restaurant with Japanese speaking staff. The sushi chefs are either Japanese or Chinese (don't worry it's fine). They have a rotating sushi "river" where the sushi goes around the bar. Very gimmicky but I like it LOL. For the sashimi I would actually just order off the menu so they have to make it fresh for you. The best quality/value combination is their Chriashi Sushi (for those who need translation: it's essentially assorted sashimi on a bed of rice). It's of very high quality and variety and it's only $17. It's comparable to Chirashi in other higher end restaurants in the range of $25 to $30. Of course, you can always go to a cheaper (and likely unauthentic) Japanese restaurant and order a $10 Chirashi but that's comparing apples and oranges. See my other Japanese restaurant reviews.

Great value in the Theatre District. Been to Fune for lunch during the week many times. Great food, always busy.

I've been to Fune a couple of times and it never disappoints. I just love the atmosphere and the selection of sushi. The revolving ships carrying the sushi adds the fun element to an amazing dining experience.
Bossy Potato
The sushi floats by you on wooden boats. You just grab whatever plates you want! It's so much fun. I love it here.

Great Place. Hidden besides the Elephant Castle on Simcoe; a friend introduced me to this place back in 2007. The first time we went there was my first time trying Sushi and I must say; I've been hooked ever since.<br/><br/>Although I don't have much experience with this cuisine but I must say I really enjoyed the experience and have been back many times. The service is friendly and quick; prices are reasonable and the place has a great ambiance.
The Canterbury Tail
Sushi Bar. Disclaimer: I've only eaten at the sushi bar. My favourite sushi place in the city. The sushi goes past on the floating boats (hence the restaurant's name.) Sushi is really fresh, and the variety is great. You can always order extras off the regular menu (I usually go for the gyoza), and speciality sushi that isn't on the regular boats and is usually imported from Japan. I love sushi, I eat sushi all over the city, and this is my favourite. Not even excessively pricey considering the quality.

Their Tori Tatsuta Udon is amazing. It's heavy on the pepper but the combination of the panko crusted chicken with hearty noodles is a perfect winter comfort food.
Om Nom Nom Nom
Cool Sushi. Traditional Japanese boat conveyor at the sushi bar. It's more expensive than the hordes of sushi places on Queen, but not as bad as I feared. I've only been there once despite living next door. I'd go back and check it out again now that I know what to expect.

Go here for a fun first date. The novelty is appealing and rolls are above average, but be prepared to splurge for what you’re getting at the end of the day. Read full review...

Fune is one of the few Japanese restaurants in the city that offer a rotating (floating) sushi bar. Recommendations • Try sitting at the sushi bar. You will see plates of sushi

How it works is you sit around a long oval table while the plates rotate around in boats. The chefs are in the middle making everything but nothing comes off unless you choose it. You don't know what it is; if it turns out to be awful, too bad for you.
