We went here after being told by a friend that they had really good schnitzel. We ordered 3 meals, schnitzel with ham and cheese on top with pan fries, the regular schnitzel with potato salad, and the rouladen. The salad that came with the schnitzel was amazing, the dumplings that came with the rouladen were tasty too. I thought all the meat was a bit dry but still good flavours.
Very European food. The staff and owner are friendly and fun. The building is scary when step in but the food makes up for it. Good prices, good people, good food makes it a good time.
Worth the trip, imho. A great place to go and do a mini-road trip with friends!
The buffet is small and modest compared to Gasthaus Gutenburger, but what was served was absolutely delicious. Schnitzel? Perfectly cooked. Spaetzle? Yum. The salads were delectable too. Meatballs, roast, chicken... all great and I went for seconds, that's for sure.
If you're vegetarian or vegan, probably not the best place because it's mostly meat-based dishes.
An enjoyable evening with the family. We took our spouses and parents out for dinner around 6pm one evening, having called ahead for reservations. We all enjoyed the buffet. The schnitzel had a citrus flavour that hit the spot. The gravy goes well with the spaetzle. My wife really enjoyed the garlic shrimp. She also liked the cake.. not overloaded with sugar like your local supermarket. Drivers excluded, we each tried a pint of german beer. If you're driving through this part of Manitoba, I would recommend giving it a try.
Go for the buffet!. Friday and Saturday evenings they have a huge smorg and there is much to try! My Opa and Oma LOVE this place and Opa says it's German food like he's never had in Canada before. Even better than some parts of Germany!
While I'm not a huge fan of (cooked) fish, their fish is amazing. The schnitzel, obviously, is to die for. Just about everything here is wonderful.
My husband loved the roast beef so well he actually got two more pieces for dessert instead of something sweet.
The price is about $13-$15 per person for the buffet, reasonably priced, for sure! Kids may be a bit cheaper. And the woman who owns the place is lovely too. They are very kind.
It's a bit of a drive, but it's worth it!
Enjoy!
Just Like Grandma's. After spending an afternoon in Steinbach, my family and I dropped in to Oma's for lunch. All of us had the buffet and the response was overwhelmingly positive. My young nephews even enjoyed it. Reminded me of the food my Grandma used to prepare.
Omagawd. Oma was standing over the buffet making sure I was having enough. Felt ashamed about not finishing everything on my plate. Ate so much I was hallucinating.
From the moment I walked in the door I knew I would love this place, it smelled just like my Grandma's house. We went on a Saturday eve & it was busy! We ordered a couple of German wheat beers which were both very good & had the buffet. It was delicious, especially the ribs & the potato salad. Would've liked to try the Roulade so we will be going back for the Sunday buffet & I can't wait. It is definitely worth the drive!!!
Friday Night Buffet. I decided to surprise my Mom tonight with a drive to the country and a home cooked German meal. Actually the drive turned out to be less than an hour from North Kildonen even with a little Christmas traffic !! Oma's was easy to find, right on the main highway as you pass through St Pierre Jolys.
Each Friday, Saturday & Sunday they have a buffet with varied items on it. You can also order off the main menu if you so desire.
The buffet was tidy, well stocked and constantly attended to, with German delectables such as schnitzel, red cabbage, spaetzal, fried potatoes, roast beef in gravy, fried chicken, creamy butter dill fish and home made Bratwurst that was very tasty. There was also a salad section and chocolate Amaretto trifle and ice cream for dessert.
The food and service were both great and a total value at $13.95 for the buffet. Everyone in the restaurant also enjoyed their dark beers served in special huge glasses.
Definitely worth the drive as another poster stated !
Authentic, delicious German cuisine. My heritage is basically entirely German, so my family and I really love this restaurant and its authentic, home-cooked tastes!
We have only ever been to the weekend buffets. The Saturday and Sunday night buffet menus are different, but both delicious whatever they are serving.
Some of the treats you might enjoy on your visit:
-golden, buttery schnitzel (thin breaded pork cutlets)
-tender (also buttery -- buttery can be applied to most hot dishes at Oma's) spaetzle, which is like the German version of pasta
-doughy, bread-filled dumplings
-rouladen (thin beef rolled around a pickle filling and drenched in gravy)
-buttery seasoned shrimp (sorry, I can't resist using the word buttery)
-traditional German salads, like coleslaw and carrot salad
-golden pan-fried potatoes
-authentic Schwartzwaldekirschtorte (translation: Black Forest Cherry Cake), which is not like its North Americanized cousin but less sweet and more alcoholic
This restaurant is run by recent German immigrants an if you're wondering, the name translates to "Grandmother's Schnitzel Room."
A more critical note: the decor is as tacky as the food is delicious. But I'm more interested in the food than the decor.
