Review Denny's - St. John's

Renée F MacDonald
My first experience with my family at Denny's did not go well but we returned a second time in hopes of a better experience. I ordered double berry banana pancakes during my second visit. Though they were not served with whip cream as I believe they are supposed to be, they did taste lovely and the portion was fair for the price. The service was atrocious to say the least. After speaking with the lovely, professional and caring manager Willem, I feel confident that the service will be more pleasant from now on. Because what happened with the server was not Denny's fault, I am giving this review the stars Denny deserves in my opinion of my second visit and definitely not what the server deserves. I look forward to eating at Denny's again

Had a Salted Caramel & Banana Cream Pancake and a Oreo milkshake.. pancakes were really sweet but tasted great. The milkshake is big enough to share, they give you extra. They even have me a free smoothie taster. Our server did everything to make us happy ! Would go back again.

Fantastic service, delicious food and great atmosphere. The salted caramel pancakes and egg white omelette were to DIE for 🤤 Will definitely visit Denny's again!

Food was tasty and very affordable. My parents had great meals from the seniors menu without breaking the bank. Our server was exceptional, very friendly and returned multiple times to ensure all was good. Would recommend 😊 for an enjoyable evening out on a budget.

Took my two kids for brunch, restaurant very busy but they were able to get us a table after a short wait (shorter than estimated!) staff was quick and friendly. Food came fast, was delicious and the kids loved it. Can’t wait to go back. The strawberry crepe was amazing. I don’t recall the lady who was our server but she was very attentive and friendly. Thanks!!

Denny's was a great experience. As first time diners we didn't know what to expect. Service was excellent, great selection of things that I like. Portions were perfect. Best part was that the server noticed my CF1 card and stopped my payment to give me the military veterans discount. A very good experience!

Our breakfast was delicious and the service was wonderful as usual! Thank you, Katelyn and staff!

I just went to Denny's in St. John's and had an awful experience. Usually the service is fantastic but not today. After being seated we sat there for 20 minutes and no one came over even to offer us coffee. My husband went to the front twice to question why we weren't getting service. Finally the waitress Came over and told us that they are short staffed. No apology was given and she just left..It would of been appreciated if we had been told this earlier. Finally we just left.

Our first experience here tonight- table of 4, 15 mins after we were seated we still hadn’t met our waiter/had a drink order taken so one of us went up to ask if we had been forgotten. We were heavily apologized to- apparently the waiter scheduled for that section had just gotten off work and wasn’t replaced? Anyway, finally got to place our order and the waiter we did have was pleasant. Our drinks and apps came out within a reasonable time and were DELICIOUS- the bacon cheddar tots are amazing and to have a “build your own platter” option was really nice and also very reasonably priced. Then our mains came out, which we all enjoyed with no real complaints. I will say that even though there was nothing wrong the breakfast (bacon, eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, toast), I’ve had much better elsewhere; it was good but nothing special, I wouldn’t get it again. Especially not after the breakfast experience I recently had at the Omelette Wizard on topsail rd- THAT was a phenomenal breakfast. Denny’s pancakes were the only breakfast item I was excited about- they were really fluffy and delicious, almost had a slight hint of vanilla to them. I’m also not sure what happened with our waiter but 3 different people were kind of serving us at random points and he was no where to be found? We then ordered drink refills and desserts... the drinks never came and then our dessert came out wrong. My friend and I both ordered the strawberry white chocolate pancake puppies... neither of ours had white chocolate chips or strawberries in them, they were just plain dough. Still good but not what we had ordered. At this point we asked to speak with a manager about our experience and she was by far the saving grace of the evening. She took all of our concerns seriously, thoroughly apologized, told us the evening was on her (over 100$ bill!), gave us her business card and wrote a coupon for 2 free apps on the back. I’ve never seen such a generous gesture from a manager at any restaurant! You could tell she was sincerely sorry for the experience we had and really wanted us to come back. We will definitely be giving Denny’s a second try! Hopefully they’re able to work out the kinks in the service because overall it seems reasonably priced and once you find the menu items that are spectacular (like the pancakes or bacon cheddar tots), I could see this being a go-to place.

We were excited to visit this restaurant today for the first time. Our server Sydney was very attentive and friendly. It was a 45 minutes wait for our breakfast selections, though coffee and tea were served almost immediately and ‘top ups’ were offered frequently by all staff (not just our server). Three of our 4 plates were laid on the table next to us (by another server) before those diners realized it wasn’t what they had ordered and it was picked up and laid on our table with assurances that it ‘wasn’t touched’. My husband’s ‘hard fried’ eggs were runny and he was given sausage instead of bacon. We likely will not return based on today’s experience.

The restaurant itself is very nice, however the service is slow, be prepared for your experience to be at least 1.5 hours from arrival to end, at least. The food portions were surprisingly small. I ate at Denny’s in Ottawa and raved about the large portions and value for the money. When I was brought my hash browns, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 sausages on a small plate I nearly choked, I thought it was a joke. I would be ashamed serving a piece of bacon and a sausage that small in my home to guests, I wouldn’t be able to serve it to a paying customer. The only value would be the pancakes , they were large. I would not say the food was served hot, but it wasn’t cold, we had to ask after 40 minutes where was the order. There are other options to choose to get a breakfast in St. John’s, I don’t think I will go back for the breakfast, which is unfortunate as I had higher hopes for it. I have not ruled out going back for their dinner menu, that will be a review for another time.

Arrived late afternoon on a Sunday. The place was not overly busy. I have visited Denny's in Vancouver a few times so we were excited to try it here !! We arrived, the host was very nice. We waited about 15 mins and no one came over...10 mins later I had to bring the little one to the bathroom. There was so much water on the floor on the way in she slipped. Could not find any paper towel to clean it up and no one to get a hold of to let them know about all the water on the floor... we were there for about a half hour and we decided to leave because even when we tried to get someone's attention they kept on saying "just a minute " and going off. I can not comment on the food, well because we never did get that far. A bit disappointed in our first visit. Normally do not mind a bit of a wait but a half hour with no acknowledgement or even offered any water/drink or to let us know there would be a little bit of a wait is a little much. Maybe they were short staffed, who knows.

The fact I am taking the time to write this is concerning enough. Honestly the worst customers service we’ve ever experienced in a St. John’s restaurant. The staff was friendly, but wow...... just poor and slow customer service. Constantly asking for things, the amount of time it took just to get served when there’s only 8 customers in the building. The food however, was really good. I wish management sort this out as I won’t recommend this place to anyone.

This was easily the worst meal I have ever been served in my entire life. Uncooked hash browns, wiggly bacon, inattentive service. When I told the "certified trainer" everything was terrible it was shrugged off as "working out the kinks". I will never recommend this restaurant nor will I ever come back myself.

Worst experience that I have ever experienced. Waited over an hour for my food and it came out freezing cold. Denny’s in the states is much better. Won’t b back again! The waitress never even apologized for my meal being cold. Nothing.

My husband & I had supper there the other night & even though service was good I found it to be over priced & I was underwhelmed & very disappointed with the food. The seasoned french fries had no taste & absolutely gross. My burger has no condiments on it and wasn't even hot & kept falling apart. Very disappointed indeed! This was my first time eating there & I'm sorry to say it will be my last.

Service was good -scrambled eggs were a little dry but the buttermilk pancakes were amazing and they use real maple syrup-service was excellent but food was slow to arrive at our table -we waited 40 minutes for food to arrive -growing pains!

We absolutely loved our trip to Denny's at the St. John's Newfoundland location! Our server was beyond amazing. He went above and beyond to accomodate our kids. The assistant manager helped keep our kids preoccupied waiting. It was a 15 minutes wait and gave the kids stickers and coloring activities. The food was awesome and customer service on all ends was fabulous.

Service was ok. The food was awful. The sausages were barely cooked, the French toast was undercooked, the bacon was undercooked and microwaved. The scrambled eggs didn’t even taste like eggs. We will not be going back.
