Best Fish and Chips place in St. John's!
Cheap and Delicious. Scampers is a nice, quick treat. I have had the hot turkey sandwich twice and loved it. Cheap prices and good portions of food. My fiance enjoys their two-piece fish and chips. My parents enjoyed their meals from there as well. Scallops are delicious (warning: they are battered). Have only had take-out; not somewhere I would want to eat-in. Take-out service is good. Love the gravy.
Scampers - basic diner food. Scampers is a great little diner, located just off Kenmount Road in St. John's. It's been around for many years and chances are the menu has been pretty much the same since it opened. The "daily special" which never changes, is a hot turkey sandwich (dark meat only) for $5.95 and a salmon dinner for $8.95. Note to salmon purists: this is the first time I have seen salmon breaded and deep fried - not my favourite way to eat it. I scraped off the breading and the salmon was quite good underneath, but I wouldn't order it again.
Prices are generally under $10 for pretty much everything on the menu, but be aware that, unlike a lot of diners, the portions here are smaller. They use smaller plates and although the plates are full of food, you're getting less than you would at many other diners.
There's a "booth" section and a "counter" section. The service is ok for a diner although sometimes it can be a little slow.
Noon hour is very busy; the supper hour seems to be less busy. I haven't been there for breakfast although I'm thinking of trying it some weekend morning.
If you keep your expectations realistic, you can get a filling meal for a reasonable price. As long as you like it fried!
