I owe this restaurant a review badly. I ventured here last year and I was so happy by the ambiance, service, and quality of food that I am excited to write this much delayed review. I've been to Japan in late 2015 and this is one of the few places (other than the newly opened Dorinku) that reminded me of Japan. The presentation and choices are excellent. I loved the deep fried oysters and the korokke (japanese potato croquette). The bento box was neatly presented and light tasting. The sashimi tasted fresh and was not slimy. Japanese rice was used. The miso soup was actually drinkable. It's not too artificially flavoured, not too salty, and not full of MSG. I can't wait to drive all the way from south Edmonton back to here. I just wished this opened in Edmonton but I somehow think there is strategic importance in opening out of town for better competitive edge. So good on them. Make me drive here instead ;)
We went here on a Friday night when the oilers were playing so it was fairly deserted. Ordered beef tataki, albacore tuna tataki, tempura vegetables, rainbow rolls, and as an afterthought salmon sashimi. All were very good with the beef tataki being the highlight. Service was great, the place was very clean and very nicely decorated. The only issue was the price. 2 people with 1 beer and 1 green tea was near 100$ including a modest 15% tip which is a bit much considering we were both barely full. Will probably go again to try some other dishes.
Have never been disappointed eating here. My bf, who had never had Japanese food, absolutely loved it. We have been several times and our faves are the beef tataki, tempura, various sushi/sashimi. Always so fresh and the presentation is a work of art. We often share the saki sampler, my favourite is the Mandarin one. The service is always good. The owner/manager is always very friendly and has comped me my fave saki a few times. Decor is modern and simple and nice and clean. Good value for the dollar.
