Review Copa Cafe - Richmond

David L
Excellent Chinese style Western comfort food, the sizzling hot plate combos are always my go to favorites! Friendly staff and efficient service, food came out fresh and hot within 15 minutes. Very comfortable seating in a spacious restaurant.

Nice interior. It was really busy when we went on a stat-holiday. It felt a bit understaffed. Overall the food and selection is what you would expect from a hk style cafe.

Got the chicken steak and instant noodles. Friend got the pork chop and sausage. The chicken steak is definitely the best meat out of what we tried! Instant noodles is what you expect.

We love their baked dishes! These are mini-sets that come with a drink. And I thoroughly enjoyed the lamb fried rice stone pot!

My favorite place in Richmond for HK cafe food. There are so many options! Great for when your whole family and or friend group is craving something different. Although it's my fav, it's not the best (reason for 4 stars). Like the recooked frozen veggies for the hotplate/customizable plates are terrible. Comparing it to many other HK cafe places, the quality and quantity for what you pay is good (others are pricey). I normally get the customizable plates (ribeye steak, fried filet, Fries or spaghetti, ice lemon tea). My family would get the stir fried noodles or Chinese set dinners to share. Service, not bad. They do get super busy often so I highly recommend making a reservation. Food gets served relatively quick once the order is in. Parking lot is a bit annoying, but it's free!

The baked rice and baked spaghetti were just OK. If you look at the pictures....the cheese they put on is just a sprinkle.. Not very much cheese at all. The toppings were very sparse so you ended up with lots of noodle and very little flavor. Barely any meat. The noodles were also over boiled and kinda soggy... Not even close to Al dente. The customer service is also not the greatest here... Very curt staff. Was not impressed..... :(

**update 01** - 1 hour after meal, both of us had diarrhea and we had to stop by Aberdeen center to poop --------------- 1) Tea - over boiled, bitter. Not to mention the server spilled a quarter of it and didn't even apologize for it. 2) Menu - expensive with small portion, "afternoon tea menu" has literally limited selection, and for the ramen option you have to add $3, and the price equals regular menu 3) Healthiness - absolutely zero... very greasy dishes 4) Soup Noodle - simply flavorless 5) Environment - Reno but I am here for food not for atmosphere. I can visit Joe Fortes for atmosphere. 6) Free parking is the positive. Is there anywhere in Richmond that actually is pay parking only?

Meh. A Chinese greasy spoon. Food is average. Service is average. Prices also average. Nothing exciting here. Value is okay if you eat the mini set meals before 6pm. I would say that if you want bigger portions and cheaper go to silvertower. If you want better quality go to happy day.

Great decor and comfortable seating. I was impressed especially since it's a quick, fast food style restaurant with inexpensive food items. The foods range from western breakfast items to noodles and congee. The chinese donuts were perfectly fluffy and crispy. I would definitely come again for a quick meal on a dime.

Huge menu with all of the classic cha chaan teng items & more. Noodles were good although beef was over-tenderized. T’s order got mixed up & he was not a fan of his sandwich...(3/5)

First restaurant in Vancouver! It’s decorated really nicely and full of Asians. The food was so so, presentation wasn’t great but the taste was decent. I was a bit confused why they chucked a random piece of orange next to the food. The iced coffee was amazing though: 10/10.

We went to Copa Cafe on River Road for an early dinner following our parents' doctor's appointments. It was before 6pm so they still had the afternoon menu set available so the four of us ordered four different dinner sets. While ordering our food, I asked for the stone rice with unagi. The female server asked sternly what kind of sauce I would like for the unagi. From my past experience eating unagi with rice in all other restaurants, I thought unagi would normally come with only one kind of sauce so I was kind of taken by surprise with her question. Naturally, I responded by asking her what kind of sauces do they offer? She did not respond to my question and just stood there and remained silent (she was expecting me to refer to the menu where they have indicated the different kinds of sauces to serve with the unagi). I found her unfriendly and unwilling to offer any extra customer service by simply telling us the kind of sauces they had to offer.
My parents couldn't finish their food so they asked for a take out box. Another female server said "I can bring you a take out box but it will cost $0.50 each". We were quite shocked when she told us that as we frequent Asian restaurants in Richmond at least a few times a week but were never told we would be charged for a take out box. To the best of our knowledge, all other Chinese restaurants and HK style cafes in Richmond that we've been to, would not charge their customers for a take out box and we were astonished that Copa has started doing this (they didn't use to do that in the past) to their customers, which reflects poorly on their owners how they have chosen to treat their customers.
When the female server finally brought the take out box to our table, she noticed that my Dad had put a $5 tip for our dinner bill of $48 (before taxes), she immediately said "this is not even a 10% tip you paid" (she was referring to the final amount of the dinner bill after tax, which was about $53.76). When my dad gave her another $.50 for the take out box, she said the take out box with tax included would be $.55. We were like "what!?". I was really furious that she said what she did to us about the tip and the extra tax on top of the take out box (which she never told us there would be tax for the take out box as she simply said to us earlier that a take out box would cost $0.50 each). I responded to her that "must we pay you 10% tip even when we are not happy with your service?". She then replied "whatever you want to do, it doesn't matter!".
This is such terrible service and lousy way to treat a customer! For their owners to implement a policy to start charging for the take out boxes, it tells you a lot about who they are and the way how they run their business. We will NEVER go back any of the Copa Cafes as we firmly believe that there are a lot of greater restaurant choices out there in Richmond, when it comes to offering the similar/same type of food (if not better) but with far superior customer service and higher food quality.
In fact, the food quality of Copa is very mediocre and one can find better food elsewhere easily in Richmond.

On a weekend, Ben and I had our morning walk at the Minoru Park. Spring is the most beautiful season, according to Ben. After our walk in the park, we walked over to the T&T across the Oval. After some light groceries shopping, Ben suggested to have lunch at Copa Cafe around the corner. We had a short wait for a table as it was almost noon. The decoration is modern as this is relatively a new restaurant.

August 18, 2016.
I tried their baked pork shank with Germany style ...it's extremely dry/ fatty / small portion/ mash potatoes not smooth and gravy was sour and nothing worth for $20. I also tried baked pork chop on pasta (not enough sauce/ too dry), services are bad

My family used to frequent the Copa Cafe on Cambie Street, but we haven’t been back in a long time. Last weekend when we were in Richmond we decided to drop by their Richmond location for some nostalgic eats. What I ate: Baked Ox Tongue on Rice with Tomato Sauce ($9.95) from their Mini Set Menu + Hot Milk Tea

This location is a more upscaled version of the other locations and other HK cafes. Prices are slightly more than your typical cafe. I usually go for breakfast as I like the tomato and egg with vermicelli. This joint is more about comfort as there is ample space and you don't feel crammed.

**update September 4th, 2016
Haven't been here in a couple months. Breakfast prices have gone up a bit. Satay beef with vermicelli is now an extra 50 cents with the combo. They no longer have the tomato and egg vermicelli. After the additional $1 for a cold drink and beef vermicelli upgrade of 50 cents, a combo costs $10.25!!

I went to copa Cafe last week , and the food was good. Id give it a 7/10 on the food. But the service that came along with it was beyond horrendous. At our table we had a waitress that was really nice and even told us about something I ordered that had tuna with sauce mixed into it, even though I didn't want any sauce. So that was great! And I ordered something else. But later when we got our bill, the waitress accidentally gave us a yellow card (I think a gift card or membership) and we didn't know that(maybe thought it was just for collecting points) , so we took it and walked to the car . Then then manger came running out saying to give it back to him immediately and how we should have never took it in the first place(actually yelling ) , Yet it was not our fault as we didint know. It was absolutely astonishing how the manager could act like that. Overall the food was good, and the waiters/waitresses but I couldn't believe the behaviour from the manager. It brings my rate of 7 down to a 1. I will never return there.

Asian breakfasts are always so satisfying and so worth every penny as usually the amount of food you get can feed at least two people. Copa Cafe is no exception! This location is the latest edition to this food chain. I am used to going to their Cambie location but realizing that this is across the street to my gym I started coming here. However, I can tell you right away there are a few differences in food quality and they are not good.

For those that are unfamiliar with dining at a 茶餐廳 (Cha Chaan Teng), it's simply referring to food with constarch-thickened sauces being served in a loud environment with either subpar or exceedingly ungenuine customer service. Copa Cafe is nothing more, and nothing less. The only exception would be that it's conveniently located at the bottom of a newly-finished residential building, and just across from the Richmond Olympic Oval in the case where you want to grab a bite after utilizing their gym facilities.

It seems like Hong Kong style restaurants are getting harder to find even in Richmond as they are being replaced with mainland Chinese style restaurants. At least that's what it seems like in Richmond. Copa has a few restaurants around the lower mainland. . This branch is located with the new T&T supermarket along River road, just across from the Oval. There is underground parking but can be awkward driving up and down the lot. You really have to use the mirrors set on the walls or you can collide with oncoming traffic navigating the lot.

For me the whole reason to be here is to continue my quest for the best Baked Pork Chop on Rice in the city. I heard some good reviews on their version ($12.95) here so I was very eager to try. The portion was huge, and pork chop itself was beautifully done – the crust was thin, thickness was prefect, and the meat was moist and tender. However the tomato sauce was slightly underwhelming, due to the quality of the tomato and the ratio of the cheese and starch. And maybe a touch of spices or herbs would help elevate the sauce too. Unfortunately it is not the best Baked Pork Chop yet.

Better than expected. Was a bit nervous about trying this place with all of the negative reviews. I found the service to be pretty good and the food was decent too.
There was a promotion for April where kids meals are half price with a VIP membership. Membership is $10 but also gives you 5% off so I signed up on the spot and got more than $10 worth of savings with 2 kids meals at half off (~$5) and 5% off. Membership is good for the year so whether or not I come again I've already got my membership paid for.
Kids meals were limited in selection but the amount of food was a lot. A bowl of pasta (meat sauce or cream sauce) WITH either fish and chips, chicken wings and fries or chicken strip sand fries. Plus drinks and mango pudding for dessert was included. At $10 ok not super cheap but at $5 that's a deal.

Been here a few times and the quality is better than other HK cafes, albeit smaller portions. But I rather trade quality to quantity. I tried the Copa on Cambie and that one is not very good. The Richmond location much better in food. Hopefully this quality holds up long term or else it will just be another HK cafes.

Not Flexible at all!. One of our friends is vegetarian and on Christmas Day we went to Copa for dinner, Copa was doing a menu with only 3 items that day. When I called to make a reservation they didn't mention anything about their Christmas menu, when we got there and asked if they could do a dish for our vegetarian friend, the waitress went to ask the manager and the manager wouldn't even bother asking the kitchen and told the waitress to tell us there's nothing they can do. The waitress had asked the manager come talk to us and the manager didn't bother and told the waitress to let us know instead. What kind of service is this? They would rather have a customer sit there with nothing to eat than ask the kitchen to make a simple vegetarian dish. We didn't ask for anything special, even just a salad would be fine!

So so food; hard to find parking. Nice new clean place, but the portions were small.
The parking will be hard once T&T opens.

Meat was 1/2 of the size of the bun. #1 Chicken Steak Bun in Portuguese style 2.5/5 - The menu says it can be chicken steak, pork chop, or filet in a bun. When I asked the server, he said the pork chop and the filet will be deep fried. That was why I had to stick with the chicken. Portuguese style is not suppose to be deep fried. Anyways, the "chicken steak" was a chicken thigh with skin. It was only big enough for 1/2 of my bun. The bun was like 2-day old and it was very dry. It also came with a slice of tomato and 2 pieces of lettuce, and fries. If I would to order this again, I would +$0.25 for caesar salad instead.

We waited 1/2 hour for a table and I knew the wait is going to be longer after T&T opens tomorrow. This means it will get even harder for parking. Our drinks were wrong and they charged us for iced drinks on the bill. I would rather go to Save & Smart Cafe with friendly service and decent food.

There’s a new Copa Cafe in town. It’s located at the newly built Ora condo complex along River Road in Richmond. If you don’t know already, Copa is a relatively popular Hong Kong “cha chan tang” with 2 existing locations in the Lower Mainland. With a father who loves Western Chinese food, the brand new Copa Cafe was worth a look.

Posted on February 12, 2015 by mag_mei Knowing my occasional cravings for simple Chinese food, my guest drove us out to the newest location of “Copa Cafe”, a Hong Kong style cafe chain. I haven’t been to the others, but he relayed this was one of their largest. The best part was that it came with a view. Located across from the Olympic oval, this scene was reason enough to visit it. Plus there is free parking in underground adjacent. Having been before, my guest was able to warn of signs. Oddly the lower levels of this complex required payment, where the upper was free for all to use. I questioned the reason of having some free stalls and other not. Walking up to the all glass exterior the mascot first catches your eye. He is a joyful looking chef, a cross between Nintendo’s Mario and Chef Boyardee. Given the more formal decor and dressed up setting, the cartoon character seemed out of place. Things were fancy for a casual style cafe, the most done up I have ever seen of one. It reminded us of a hotel lobby. My guest described it best as, “Not a Ritz Carleton but a solid Sheridan”. Between the ornate crystal chandelier encased by wire woven orbs, the giant stone urn in the centre of the room, the snake skin patterned booths, the arch way fronting the kitchen, and the stone facade resembling a house with window and sill; I concurred on his assessment. I agreed that this looked like the scene of a descent restaurant located within a descent three star hotel. The menu was wonderfully done, printed with easy to navigate photos above descriptions of everything offered. It was useful in helping me make my decision. There was a section for western style dishes, or their definition of western cuisine. My guest hypothesized that this was just a way to distinguish between dishes with and without steamed rice, which include chicken a la cart, baked linguini in bologna sauce, braised seafood on rice in a Spanish
Every Day Is A Food Day
This came with a baked lobster tail, steak in peppercorn sauce, some blanched vegetables, and mashed potatoes shaped like a pear and deep fried. The dish was cold when it arrived. To add, my entree came 5 minutes after my two appetizers arrived. Do they expect diners to eat that quickly? It was the worst service possible, with three plates in front of me. I felt that was really unprofessional. As for the food, the lobster was just average. Nothing special. The steak itself was cooked perfectly to medium rare, but I personally thought the peppercorn sauce tasted disgusting. It ruined the whole dish. Something about the flavour was just off. The fried mashed potatoes were decent but needed to be flavoured. The potatoes themselves were bland. Overall, I wasn’t happy with this dish.
