Review Hou Lok - Richmond

Tiff Y.
Came here from reading good reviews for late night eats. We ordered 7 dishes to get a taste of how their food is. Each dish was either sweet, too salty, or tasted off. I walk into each place with no expectations at all, so that I can give it a fair decision and review. However, this restaurant just didn't do it for us. Don't get me wrong, service was good, but the food just wasn't.

Not bad. Cant be a bit dirty at times.

They have a late night menu that is $6 per dish and for every $20 you spend, you get a complimentary giant bowl of congee (they say it is ground meat congee but the meat morsels are so few it is really plain congee, but it's free so...¯\_(ツ)_/ ¯)The food is actually decent. It isn't worth a special trip to try, but if you are in the area, on a budget and hungry after 9pm then this is a good place to check out.

back in 2016 when i was in graveyard shift, we bought lots of foods from this restaurant. good for late night takeout as they are the 4pm-4am restaurant. but yesterday, i came to buy my late food at about 12:15am, aug20, and today, about 12:30am-aug21, the restaurant is again closed back to back days so im thinking this restaurant is done. its closed permanently.

Horrible restaurant, they use cheap and not fresh ingredients for food. Food doesn't taste good and definitely not authentic Cantonese cuisine. Very dishonest and impolite people. Charged extra in our bill and ask us to leave them more tip. Don't ever go there.

Their lotus leaf crab on fried rice is a MUST! Everything else is amazing too. The absolutely stunning taste of everything more than makes up for the shoddy decor.

Great place for small Chinese dishes and late night food. Kind of an older place but adds to the charm. Food is quite good.

It's good place for dinner or late dinner. $6-8 a dish, free congee over $20 of spending. Tasty food.

Went shopping with H and his mother at Tsawassen Mills this weekend, and by the time we were done, it was already 8:30. Hou Lok is open for late night, so we took our hungry tummies here:. The honey garlic pork is one of my favourite Chinese dishes. They have a good one here, a good balance of meat and bone and lots of sauce.

was curious for a long time and finally get to go over here at last, went with a few foodie friend, and well i was actually had a feeling this will be a decent restaurant that is worthy to come over after quite a few times tried to come over. well then came in at 6pm ish and quite late. went inside the place/ambiance is quite promising, nothing fancy, and looks really relatively old with history written that they have survived for a long time. well then, time to order the food.only ordered 4 items, since i know i'll be eating again soon, so ordered the free range chicken, half of them, stir fried seasonal vegetable, fried rice, and egg foo yoong.

well the chicken is by far the best dish, even though it's a cold dish, the flavour is there. the rest, the stir friend seasonal vegetable is definitely alright, but i think even my friend can cook as well or even better. The fried rice is definitely okay as well nothing stands out. and the egg foo young maybe i was expecting more of a runny and starchy type instead of a sunny side up egg.

overall for the price/quality/quantity i wouldn's say it's worth it, not sure if they have changed chef when i came or i did order the wrong item, but base on the cooking of the simple items, i can definitely match my own cooking as well.

I decided to try out their late night menu as I've heard about their good prices. Each dish are $5 each. If you order over $20, they give you free congee. The portion was small of course with the price being so low. The food was average. Not bad, but nothing special. I ordered 5 dishes and one of them was silver fish with egg. The egg was very fluffy and soft, but I didn't like the shells on the silver fish (maybe it's suppose to be that way??). The fry garlic w/ watercress was a but salty in my opinion, but my bf thought it was fine. The rest of the food was fine. The service was not bad too, the lady that served us was very friendly. Overall, I would come back to this place.

I have an evening class which makes me return to Richmond at around 10pm. My parents decided to wait for me for dinner, and we went here as we have not been here in a while, and they serve late night meals. So I met up with them here after class and we ordered several dishes. This place serve Asian (mainly Chinese) cuisines. They serve in smaller portions at $5 (most of them) a dish with a free congee if you order minimum $20. The congee is meant to be shared and can probably serve 6-8 bowls. A refill of this congee bowl is a additional $5. There are other dishes which cost more than $5 as well, but we ordered all from the $5 menu. We ordered fried egg with silver fish, sweet and sour pork, pig intestines and some chicken wings. So when they came, I must admit these portions were pretty small. I was quite disappointed.

The dishes don't stand out much and don't really meet my expectations for a dine out place. I probably won't come here again as I believe my money can be better spent elsewhere for better quality food.

cafeeeli.blogspot.ca/

Good place for late night meals after badminton in Richmond. The "da lang" dishes are priced reasonably. We ordered the chicken herbal hot pot, pickled veggie with scrambled eggs, and pan fried garlic lettuce. Everything was solid except the lettuce was a bit too salty for my liking. It opens late so would be another good option over No 9 restaurant (24 hours). Service was quick.

Cheapest da lang dishes. The amount of food and the reasonable prices keeps me coming back here for late night food! the ginger egg custard dessert is also to die for as well at a whooping price of $0.88! best late night in richmond!

Nocturnal. Been to this hole in the wall resto numerous times for laaate nite eats. great place to sober up at lol. looks can be deceiving....the derelict appearance of this eatery doesn't reflect one bit in their food. this place is known for their killer congee with all the trimmings. luv their tiny periwinkles, crispy skinned pig intestines dipped into a tangy sauce, deep fried tilapia, quadrilateral chunks of pork's blood with slivers of green onion, and ginger & scallion crab. yumz.

They have this unbeatable ‘Da Lang’ menu, on which all dishes are $5 each. ‘Da Lang’ is like late night Chinese tapas, where people snack on various smaller dishes over white congee. The dishes are small, greasy, and packed with flavours, complementing the plain and comforting white congee. Another great deal at Hou Lok is that, for every $20 spent on ordering dishes, you get a big bowl of white congee on the house! For $20, this meal is the bomb!

If you’re hungry in the middle of the night or you need to eat after a late night shift, there are not a whole lot of options for eating out.

Hou Lok is a busy restaurant that stays open late and serves a Chinese-style late night snack call da lang (打冷). There’s usually a variety of Teochew dishes like braised meat in a soy sauce marinade, seafood, and congee served on tapas-style plates. I arrived at around 9 pm and the restaurant was packed. I ended up sharing a large round table with other patrons. Hou Lok is tucked in a corner beside the T&T Supermarket. They definitely cater to the local Chinese crowd. The daily specials were written in large Chinese characters on sheets that are pasted all along the walls like wallpaper. I asked for the da lang menu where every item was $5. They throw in a free congee with a minimum order of $20. The menu had around 70 different items to choose from — from vegetable dishes, to meats, to seafood. For the more adventurous, they have several offal dishes. The boneless duck feet are surprisingly vinegary and spicy. I ordered the boneless duc

Concept: 打冷 "Da Lang" 宵夜 or 夜宵 "Late Night" Simply put, this is the Chinese style of late night cuisine, which is widely popular in different places of Asia with different variations. "Da Lang" is originated in the Chaozhou, China. Till this day, a lot of late night eateries in Asia are opened in a "Dai Pai Dong" 大牌檔 setting, which means it's in an outdoor food stall setting. Unfortunately, a lot of these are being closed down because of health regulations. The traditional dishes served in this type of cuisine are: Braised Meat in special prepared soy marinates. (IE: Duck, Intestine, beef, ETC) Chilled crab with special dipping sauce Congee Various fresh seafood prepared in different ways (steamed, pan fried, deep fried, ETC)

Hou Lok is open until 4 a.m. There’s a special menu of five-dollar dishes (fried smelt and pickled vegetables with pork intestines are two of my favorites); order four, and you get complimentary congee—the ultimate comfort food to set the stage for restful sleep.

This restaurant is so low key that for the longest time I had forgotten about them. Even driving past this restaurant I did not even notice it is there. It came back on my radar when Keev organized a “dalang” chowdown with a focus … get this … chicken TES
