Review Maruwa Sushi Japanese Restaurant - Richmond

Simon Chung
This is a small Japanese restaurant near Tim Hortons. Ordered the Sashimi lunch box, beef teriyaki, and a few rolls. While good tasting, we found the serving sizes quite small. Was hoping for a few more pieces of sashimi. Service was friendly, though. For the money, I would prefer going to Kisho Poppo near by.

Outstandingly amazing food presentation. Food tastes great. Everything is always fresh. The place is very clean and is nice to sit and dine at. Waitresses are all polite and friendly.

Small cozy restaurant. The place is clean and service is good. Prices are slighly high. I ordred beef eriyaki and it was almost cold and that was a little disappointing. The chirashi don was a little small but the fish was fresh.

Simple but perfect sushi restaurant. Quiet and delightful place with colorful plates and authentic Japanese taste. Worth a visit.

Spicy Chirashi Don, small portion but fresh ingredients. There’s raw scallop in it which surprised me. This cost about $16+tax and tip

Everything is fine here. The position size is a bit small and so is the selection. The food was very tasty and the service was excellent.

This place has new owners now but they are still able to maintain close to the level of quality as the previous owners. The head sushi chef behind the bar is super nice and engaging. After going a few more times and remembering me he would give us a few complimentary creations he is working on. The place isn't that big and it can get quite cramped - but its nice and cozy.

Fresh sashimi and very good value. I have gone here for a few years now, and have never had any issues with the food quality here. Prices are very good as well. I personally order a mix of normal rolls (chopped scallop, spider roll, etc.) and the larger special rolls (for example, rainbow roll). The 'real crab california roll is also great. Highly recommended.

The food was generally great, the service was quite exceptional as well. Would be a 4 or maybe 5 star if the menu wasn't so inconsistent. The take out menu and the menu delivered by mail is completely different than the dine in menu. There are many sushi combos, specialty rolls, and dessert items missing on the dine in menu.

Great food, great service, definitely the best restaurant in ironwood

On an unplanned visit we were really impressed with the quick meal we had tonight . All of our choices were beautifully presented and very tasty. It might become the go-to!

It is a small restaurant, but is very comfortable service. The price is reasonable and very delicious dish. It is very convenient to be 3 min on foot from the workplace. 仕事の合間に食べに行く店が限られるのですが,小さいながらも丁寧な仕事をしてくれるお店があると助かりますね.

If you like small places with GREAT SERVICE and FOOD , you need to go here. Excellent food, great service, great prices and quiet and cozy ! A true diamond ! I have about 10 sushi places between my home and this place and I always make the effort to go there, well worth my time ! Love my sushi, refuse to have poor quality food and this place has never let us down. Any time we have company come to town we go there and everyone leaves with a big smile on their face. IMHO

Greater Vancouver is home to a plethora of Japanese restaurants, which means there is always a lot to choose from! One sunny evening, we stumbled upon Maruwa Restaurant, which is tucked inside Ironwood Plaza in Richmond. The reviews on Yelp and Zomato seemed positive, so we decided to give it a try.

The portions here are smaller compared to other places but the quality and taste are great. The space is small and can be busy during lunch hours, especially on weekdays as it's near several offices.

I have come here for lunch a few times.
The service has been very quick and food has always tasted good.
Prices are good and portion sizes are great if your getting a bento.
I will continue to come here more often.

This is my first time getting sushi in Richmond, and I have to say I'm not impressed. My office made an order consisting of 2 Miso Soups, 2 California Rolls, 1 Yam Tempura Roll, 1 Salmon Roll, 2 Salmon Nigiri and a Spicy Tuna roll. Everything had the vide that it was made in a grocery store hours ago, the rice was hard, salmon fishy and the yam roll was more soggy tempura batter than yam. Needless to say we will be finding a new sushi restaurant.
Domo Is Craving...
As you guys may all know, I am a major sushi fan, so wherever I am I'll always recommend eating sushi. A few months back I actually stumbled upon a Japanese restaurant located in the Ironwood Mall with my bro but for some reason I totally forgot to blog about it! So here it is!. When we first saw the menu, it was very limited. There were assorted combos or individual rolls, sashimi and appetizers for ordering. The lunch menu was like any other standard sushi restaurant, serving the usual types of dishes. The interior was pretty small but its clean and bright. The waitresses were prompt in serving us.

My wife and I have been searching for a sushi restaurant that's authentic, delicious and fresh while not overly expensive. We're in LOVE with Maruwa sushi! The sashimi is awesome and all of their rolls are always so consistently fresh! My personal favourite is the volcano roll while my wife loves the spider roll. Can't go wrong here.
Every Day Is A Food Day
Maruwa Sushi is a Japanese restaurant in Ironwood Mall. I felt like I should switch it up with my usual sushi take out spots and try a new one, so we ended up going to the restaurant to place our order. A short 15 minutes, and our food was ready. S got the not-so-traditional rolls as he usually goes for. The Beef Roll and Chicken Roll both looked packed with meat. S said that the rolls were decent.

It's getting worse.. The new owners are friendly, but they have to be given the horrible food they provide. This place use to be packed. Sure, everybody talks about the lousy service back then, but it was 2 people service the whole restaurant. 1 server and 1 sushi and cooked food chef. What do you guys expect?! They were never mean. Anyway, the new place is empty all the time and it's easy to see why. I had the gomaea. Today and the spinach was so chewey it was inedible. The sesame sauce was as runny as water. The Spicey tuna don was just all soy sauce. There was none of that sesame oil from the previous owner's recipe that made this dish so addictive. And this may seem petty, but ginger with this dish is par, I shouldn't have to ask for it. I've come back a few times now under the new owners and basically the food was always 60-70% of what it was. Still passable. The chicken karage, which was a stable under the old owners, is now a messy mush. My wife has vowed never to return because of it. I've given these guys a few more chances, but after today, I'm with her. It's not a special place for authentic sushi anymore. So sad.

Better service lousy taste!. We use to go quite often to Maruwa Sushi in spite of the lousy service of the previous owners! The food was very good.
The new owners renovated the place, the service is better although slow but the food is tasteless!!
All three rolls that we've ordered tasted the same, very dry, too much rice,no flavor. We are not going back!

Big disappointment!

New owners not japanese anymore.. I just want to say I've come to maruwa for many years and liked it for their style of japanese food. Family run by japanese owners. Albeit the service was just okay/satisfactory i never really had a problem and only really kept coming back because they where different and pretty high quality for the price.

Come today with the new owners, i give them a big thumbs up for service. Better than the previous owner and super friendly.

However! The new owners are not japanese and have changed things a little. Both my two favoriate dishes i used to just come for, tuna tataki and the chicken teriyaki are totally different.

The tuna tataki is... Not tuna tataki. Its sliced then seared all around... And then its hopelessly drown in soya sauce and warm OIL... I can't taste the ponzu. I've had variations of tuna tataki and this is just turned into half steamed chinese fish.

The chicken teriyaki is now your run of the mill "fast food" chicken teriyaki style that you can get at any AYCE. It used to be special, no batter and had a interesting smokey flavour. It tasted at least healthy and not just pan fried. Not anymore!

Lastly, many people love large rolls which i can understand. However maruwa used to serve bite size tasty and addicting rolls! Now, its just again your standard run of the mill sushi.

I give the new owners props on trying a new venture and offering great service but Maruwa really isn't that "special" place anymore. Its just now your typical japanese restaurant.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Although the restaurant is situated in a quieter part of Richmond, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food. I honestly believe the quality of the sushi, as well as the visual plating of its dishes are beautiful, and are somewhat uncharacteristic of the restaurant when looking at it from the outside. It may be small, but it is a cozy atmosphere. The service was extremely friendly, and family oriented and I will definitely visit again on my next adventure to Richmond if I am craving some great Japanese cuisine!

The change in ownership is a positive change. We ordered a selection of rolls, including the Mango roll. Everything was tasty and fresh. Service was excellent. We will be back. Happy to say that after a couple years of poor service.

New Menu & Better Service!. During the summer, the owners changed. They've renovated the place, so it's much more spacious than before. Most of the menu is the same, but there are new additions to the menu, including their new specialty rolls, noodles (udon, yakisoba, yakiudon), and so forth.

I really enjoy the Mango Roll and the Caterpillar Roll they serve there. The Mango Roll is sweet and tangy, yet crispy because of the prawn tempura. The Caterpillar Roll is deliciously spicy. Not only is the taste amazing, the presentation of the rolls is wonderful. Aside from the rolls, another personal favourite is their chicken karage. It's juicy and crispy every single time.

The servers are very attentive and kind, always making to sure everything is okay and refilling your tea when needed. I'll be back for sure!

Very good place. A husband and wife team. Excellent bento boxes and Sushi. Basic service as she runs around by herself and her husband cooks. Crispy salads, fresh Sushi and the best crispy tempura around. Very small place. Limited seating servicing mostly the business lunch crowd. If you are looking for atmosphere and service don't come here but if you are seeking good food and good price come.

Disgusting service!! We were almost refused to be seated because no kids allowed before 1pm, this is discriminate!!! Waitress never smile, snob and slow. Never again, don't waste your money go there!!!

Junky service. Lame place.. so small.. walked in there at 11:40am..10mins after they opened, most tables already had 'reserved' on them. also.. 30min wait for takeout? lame lame lame.. AVOID THIS 'HOLE IN THE WALL' !

Bad Service, Mediocre Food. I picked up take-out one evening, and then returned to my office down the block. I arrived just as they opened for dinner service, and it still took about 25 minutes for me to leave with a small dinner order. No one else was there, so I couldn't understand.

When I opened my order at my office, I found that everything was smothered in mayo and poorly assembled. Most of my rolls fell apart. Everything tasted pretty bland, and the sashimi I ordered smelled and tasted a little "off."

Easily the best sushi around. We stumbled across this tiny restaurant while out shopping and now we drive past 6 other sushi restaurants to favor this one.

No more. I have tried to eat at this place 3x in the last month..., I have tried to take out from this place many times. Every time I have tried to go, its empty. Then I am told it will take 30mins to get my food. If the tables are full great!, I get that. But when I don't see anyone, you are telling me you don't want my business. .

I will not suggest this place to anyone.

It's only took about a year for me to get my food, I think they had to kill the animals in the back first...

I will never go back there again!!!!!!!!. I have always been a sushi fan and i had been a Maruwa customer since its grand opening. I went there for dinner with my family, including my 15 month old daughter, yesterday at around 5:45p.m.( which wasn't the peak hours). I asked the old lady( i dunno if she's the owner or just a server!) if there's a high chair or booster which i could use, and she looked at me like i was talking alien language and told me there's no such thing!! The way she replied me really offended me! Anyhow, I went back to my table and waited for the menu. Although there was only one table occupied, we waited for 15 minutes for the menu to come and another 10 mins to order!( yet, NO tea, No greeting or whatsoever was given at that point!!) Moreover, my daughter spilled over some food on the couch, and that old lady rudely told me," the couch is brand new, don't let your child stand on it" and moved towards me and wiped the couch cleaned when my daughter and me were still sitting there!! I was totally pissed at that moment and wanted to leave. However, we didn't leave because we were too hungry!!!Alright, the food finally arrived but i was shocked to see how the sashimi looked like. I wasn't eating "all you can eat", but the salmon sashimi surely looked like it!!I am not talking about the quantity but the quality of it, it didn't look or taste like how much it was charged!! The service was so bad, really really bad!!! the food was ok, but too expensive for its quality given I had better sashimi there few years back then!!! :( If you have kids, don't bother going there CUZ THIS FREAKING RESTAURANT IS TOTALLY CHILD-UNFRIENDLY!!! If it was allowed by laws, i guess they could have made a sign writing, " no child allowed" right at the front!!! If you got the money and want decent customer service, just go somewhere else!! This restaurant sucks!!!

I'll never return to Maruwa. I had parked and was walking towards the restaurant one evening. As I was only 10 feet from the door, the woman inside the restaurant, who watched me approach their glass front door, switched the sign from OPEN to CLOSED and turned her back on me, walking away. The restaurant had people inside finishing their dinners but the restaurant was not full at the time.

I immediately stopped and turned 180 degrees and walked back to my car and left.

If this restaurant's philosophy had a micron of customer service, the woman might have said, "We're closing soon, but I would be pleased to prepare whatever you wish to have "to go."

Frankly this rudeness insulted me. And I will never again return. Not only that, I tell everyone who likes sushi about my experience with Maruwa Sushi. I thoroughly enjoy sushi and have it at least three times a week. But never at Muruwa again.
Like Good Food But Love Great S
I can't believe the BAD service. Food is fresh, but service SO bad... I work a cross the street and been in the restaurant many times. Every time I walk out of there thinking that should never go back their..initially thought that they can't communicate because language restriction but No they just are rude and don't care. But today's experience was the altimate Rudness.
I will never go back there ever. The girl was too busy to take 3 second tell sorry" we are two busy fully booked".
Just ignored me and when I try to grab her attention she screamed too busy to talk. I stood there in desbliefe..
My coworker happened to witness this....she wouldn't been new costumer... But after witnessing this, NO she would even consider going there.

Maruwa owner- your staff are soo Rude specially the two ladies work there..Not only lost me as client but also lost 15 more people from my work they all feel the same way...if you Do the math 15 people x3 times a week = 2,160 visit a year average value$15= $32,400 of potential lost business annually.

Not good business sense.

Even after called the manger explaining my bad experience still didn't get an apology. sham on them.

One of my all time favorite places to eat. They have a white board with todays fresh catch or special that I just absolutely love. Their "Rainbow Mango Roll" & "tuna tataki" is to die for.

Terrible service!!!. I went there with my friend and 2 babies just for a simple lunch take out. Me and my friend were holding our babies for more than 5 mins waiting for the owner to finish her serving and picking up phone calls when it's not even busy. She just simply ignore us as if we were not exist! We then asked for 1 extra bowl and the owner said they don't have it. We asked for a soy sauce and she said we don't need it. We asked for a split bills and she looked horrified with it! They should post a sign and say
NO KIDS! NO EXTRA PLATES, NO EXTRA SOY SAUCE and NO SPLIT BILLS!!
I really don't know what else they had in the restaurant except bad serivce!

Would never go back. Came in for dinner with my wife and 1yr old. Sat down and ordered our meal, found out the now only have an a la carte menu for dinner, no more bento boxes for dinner time.

Was not given anything to drink, not even water. This was 15min into sitting down. Our toddler started fussing a bit while we were just getting his dinner ready and the hostess asked us to take him outside!

This was the first time I have ever seen or experienced something so rude from a restaurant in Vancouver, and I was born here. I outright asked her if she wanted us to leave, she did not say no.. So We did.

Will never give them my business anymore.

OK Sushi. On the fence with this place. Sushi was OK - good not great. Seating is very limited - so I ordered mine 2 go. Flavor and freshness OK. for Ironwood-Coppersmith but better found in central Richmond

Bad food, Bad service!. Went there on a weekday lunch. Thought just want to have a good sushi place in this area with my 8 months old daughter and my sister in this area & heard this place is not bad. So we went. That was packed! The restaurant is so small, simple with not much deco at all and is kinda old and unclean to me especially as you see their menu you would know what i mean- a piece of simple white flyer inside a plactic bag!
Service was awful! I requested a jar of hot water to warm up the milk for my daughter. This is the only restaurant I have been said they have no container to offer me. Just finished by" Sorry about that" with bringing me a small bowl of hot water which I can't bearly soak 1/6 of the bottle!
Food was sucks too! Imagine the sushi rice like overnight and a freeze burnt sashimi with water squeeze out when you bite on it!
All the serving bowls were either discoloured or chipped paint which I have heard the paint from those cheap japanse bowls could cause cancer!
And more, my little girl spilled some soya sauce on her hands, table and some on the floor, imagine the owner(I guess) come towards our table without offer any napkins to my girl and even the mess on the table. She went staight down underneath our table kneel between our legs to clean up the carpet for more than a minutes! We were both shocked of what her did to us.
I definitely not going back for sure. Honestly, this is the worse restaurant I have ever been. I think the only reason they can still in business is there location which has not much choice around in terms of sushi!

Would not serve us because we had a baby in a stroller, said they are too small even though it was 11:30 am and there was only 2 other people in the restaurant
No Dessert Im Full
Decent. Little place in ironwood plaza, not too much seating but was full, waitress was very nice, service was prompt and food was good. good choice for a quick dinner

Terrible service. Food is so so but there is no customer service in this place! When u make a reservation with a kid, they say they do no take reservation. When u buy take out and ask for a pkg of soy sause, they say u do not need soy sause for their food. When u want to split the bill with ur friends, they will look very angry at u and ask u not to do it next time!
We have enough. We will never go again...

Mmm...... whats up with all the fuzz?. Food was fresh but if i am paying that sorta $ on that, i might as well go Guu in Aberdeen.

My favorite sushi spot in the lower mainland. Spicy Tuna is a must!!

Sakana Bento. I am reluctant to write about my beloved Maruwa. I often go there for their lunch box, sakana bento, just over $8, the box comes with a grilled piece of fish of the day, dashi-tamago, gomaae, pickles, miso soup and rice. The portion is smaller which I like about this restaurant, I'm for quality over quantity. It is healthy and delicious, costs less than a subway lunch! Downside is that sells out so quickly and writing about it isn't good idea for me. I love this place.

Only because I was meeting a fangirl of mine. She wanted to meet here and I was hoping to get places with her otherwise why go here? I am OK with sushi, so I've been to many sushi places coz people especially ladies suggest it. The food is the usual Japanese/Korean/Chinese.
Anyway the customer service here sucks!! It is terrible. Waiteresses never smile and always slam plates on your table. They dont even bother trying to look attractive for you. At least my date looked OK and we made plans.
Troy Spracklin
Maruwa is fantastic! Best Spicy Tuna I have ever had!
Danny
Small but good!. Maruwa is one of those 'hole in the wall' restaurants. It's small, but still very good! If I'm in the Ironwood area, and I'm craving sushi, Maruwa is a great place to stop by.
Picky Diner
I was pretty sure this place had a completely new ownership. And I also noticed that the chef was no longer Japanese. The menu looked really standard and boring, rather generic than exotic. I was staring at the blank specials board for another minute, debating if I should just get up and leave. But finally I decided to stay and ordered Chirashi Don. I have to admit, this bowl of sushi rice topped with assorted sashimi slices was much better than I expected! Visually the dish was aesthetic. The chef definitely got the eyes and the knife skills for making beautiful sushi. sashimi slices were not in uniform size and shape, but the placements really worked brilliantly. Tako (octopus) and Toro (tuna belly) were even cut into 2 – 3 smaller pieces to be filled into the arrangement, which I had never seen in any other places. The sashimi was very fresh and I enjoyed every single bite, especially when I was hitting Uni (sea urchin) and Hotate (scallop). The piece of scallop was huge, sliced into 2 halves, sweet and plum. Sea urchin was the little jewel of the crown, but I wish the piece was bigger. I hate being teased! The amount of rice was perfect as well, almos

Maruwa Sushi Japanese Restaurant is a restaurant located along Steveston Highway in the Coppersmith Corner Plaza. The seating arrangement is a bit tight with seating for around under 25 people with a few tables lined along the entrance way and some seatin

The first bite of the uni cone was memorable for me. It wasn’t even about the sea urchin, it was about the toasty crispness of the seaweed and the nicely cooked sushi rice.
Eating In Vancouver
We've eaten at Maruwa plenty of occasions over the years, as my sister-in-law introduced us to the place - she knows the owner, so we always receive first-class service. Authentic Japanese sushi is hard to find, but luckily Maruwa is a Japanese owned and operated establishment. And with plenty of AYCE sushi joints in the area, Maruwa is one of the few a la carte Japanese restaurants in Richmond. It's a great spot for lunch or dinner, but the downside is that they are always busy. And another downside is that seating is limited as it's a really little space. Usually, there are always lineups, so you'll need to call in early to make reservations during lunc

It is Japanese owned and operated and it is somewhat authentic, but I didn’t find it that great. At least it was all very affordable so the damage wasn’t too bad.
