Review Shanghai Morning Restaurant - Richmond

Wow! Some of the best Xiao Long Bao I have ever had! Bursting with soup like the ones you see on television shows. You should dine on site though because they steam your food fresh to order. Also had the glutinous rice siumai which was large and so satisfying with starchy rice goodness. Highly impressed and definitely reccomend this place for Xiao Long Bao soup dumplings.

Soup buns (Xiao Long Bao) was good. Pickled cabbage noodle soup is a bit greasy for me, and pan fried buns is a bit too doughy.

For a mall stall this place was quite good. Always nice to see the XLB made right before your eyes. They had one kitchen staffer at the XLB station making XLB after XLB. The noodles were good. Good quantity and was piping hot. Would definitely try what else they have to offer.

Tried their Sheng Jian Bao (生煎包)。It is good, but not authentic. It is way too big, and not as juicy as the original version from Shanghai.

Amazing ! We loved it ! Delicious soup dumplings, super juicy pan fried dumpling. I just can’t get enough of this little stand. After many years of living in China in Hangzhou and a Changzhou, it’s even better that I remember. The staff is lovely too.

The xiao long bao were good but nothing special since steamed soup dumplings are almost always good, but the shenjianbao (pan fried pork buns) were AMAZING, juicy and flavourful!!

One of the best Xiao long bao I've had so far in Vancouver. It's a bit over $1 each (they come in 6 and I think it's $7 )but are full of good soup with a light not densely packed filling. They also hold their shape relatively well yet is a thin enough wrapping to not overwhelm the flavor. We also got the pig intestines which were also 5 🌟

Had the Xiao Long Bao, Sheng Jian Bao, and Shao Mai. The Xiao Long Bao had a perfect amount of soup, and tastes great and the Sheng Jian Bao were even better, with a crispy bottom, soft and fluffy top, and the perfect amount of filling. The Shao Mai was pretty disappointing though, as it was almost completely rice and nothing else. This place is overall still a great place to come to if you're looking for some dim sum.

Hit & miss with this place. Last time we were there the food was ok, but the time before that was so bad we left almost everything untouched. On the flip side, service is usually great. Trying to find parking can sometimes be a challenge. I would choose Long's noodle house on Main over this place.

Mediocre Food

Went there to have an early lunch on a Sunday - a table for 2

We ordered : Steamed Mini Pork Buns; Dan Dan Noodles (signature dish); and Shanghai Style Pan Fried Thick Noodles

The Dan Dan Noodles were quite tasty, because there were lots of peanut butter in it (but I could hardly find any minced pork); the other 2 items were just mediocre.

Overall environment and services were ok.

Since there are so many similar restaurants there in Richmond, I will not be interested in visiting this place frequently.

Really like this place. Good food. Large portions. Fair prices. If you go for dinner service on a weekday, you can get free xiaolongbao with purchase over $40. Place is cash only.

○decent service
○good food/ not many options for dim sum / huge portions so good for sharing
○average price
○family friendly
○If I had to choose 1 dish: xiao long bao
○would i go back? Maybe

I’m not the biggest fan of waking up early in the morning, but when there’s Shanghai food on the line, I will do my best. Deviating from my go to Shanghai Wonderful, we decided to check out this restaurant which was recommended by a friend. What I ate: Seafood Hot and Sour Soup ($8.95). This was alright, not a whole lot of seafood and the portion size was pretty small.

Came here for dinner and the place was almost full. Service was quick. We tried the fried rice served in the small wooden bucket, and it was quite good. There are also a reasonable selection of vegetarian dishes as well. Cash only

Pretty legit Shanghainese food. At lunch, the food is order via a paper sheet where you write down the quantity -- but the sheet is in Chinese. The dish that stood out to me the most was the chicken noodle soup and the green onion pancake.

The chicken noodle soup was very addictive and tasty with just the right balance of salt and milky taste.

Service: fast even when the restaurant was full.
Nuinui The Cat
Another Shanghainese joint in Richmond area. This one's quality is just so-so. Everything we ordered were not bad, but nothing special about their food. If you are just looking for something reasonably priced, this restaurant is not a bad choice.

•Braised shredded pork with pancakes•
The pancake skin is too dry and easy to break..the service wasn't good and not worth paying that much tips..

I keep hearing about this place giving away free soup dumplings for lunch and dinner, with minimum purchase of 20 for lunch, 40 at dinner. Our uncle Mike was treating my girlfriend out for dinner here, it's her bday month. I was excited and it was Friday night. Nice way to kick off the weekend with a full belly.

We were disappointed because they ran out of the soup dumplings. But fair enough though, I'm sure alot were given away for free. The decor inside is up to date. On the outside it didn't look fancy at all.
Service is decent and quick friendly. Don't be expecting interaction lol. We tried the peeking duck, ma po tofu, veggies and sauce over rice crackers, prawns, pea tip leaves, and brisket. All delicious. Then for dessert we got the sesame balls and some sugar rice dessert with wine. Absolutely fantastic.
The prices are very reasonable here. We ate a boat load and the bill only came to 109. Can easily feed 5 people. We were STUFFED. I would recommend this place to anyone.

It was salty, but otherwise not bad. Best part was the free xiao long bao that comes with any orders over $40.00USD. Farmer’s Market was canceled this week due to above mentioned storm. The rest of this weekend will be me staring out my window at the wind blowing apart the trees, while drinking coffee and reading. I told myself I wouldn’t waste money on buying books anymore, but it was so hard to resist! Picked up Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman:

One of my fave places to go for Shanghai food, although I think they have changed chefs as food has changed a little. Food is great and always fresh/hot. Mostly go for lunch for small plates/ Shanghainese dim sum. Menu is quite extensive with good prices.

On weekdays, you get free xiao long baos if you purchase over $20 for lunch or $40 for dinner. It gets busy on weekends and because it is a small restaurant, probably a good idea to go early.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had Morning Shanghai Restaurant – they used to be famous for their Sheng Jian Bao. Deep Fried Mini Bun. The buns were okay – very filling and heavy. Pan Fried Pork Buns. Wow this was a disappointing – they used to be the best, now they must have changed owners or chefs because it tastes different

went here on an early morning and my friend somehow has mistaken this place to be a dimsum place, thought she had done her review, so trusted her withouth knowing anything and went in.

being one of the earliest i was curious of how the place is not packed, and well came in and mentioned that i have large group going to arrive, and well luckily the came late, because the place is not a dimsum place. that's only after seeing the menu, and so after changing my mind, and looking at the reviews i decided to just packed a xiao long bao, and one other item that i can't remember.

while waiting for my friend, ate the xiao long bao, it's definitely juicy, and in terms of flavor is okay, definitely not bad.

overall i would say the xiao long bao is decent, and that's all i have tried at this place, will definitely come back and try other items, but as for now, i would recommend this place for a quick bite of decent xiao long bao, but definitely not the best one in town, but a decent one.

I remember coming here previously and they had a variety of Shanghai dumplings to order. I came back and the menu completely changed. The Shanghai dumplings were a disappointment and the soybean soup was tasteless. Seating is very cramped too. Overall, disappointing.

Lately I've been on the hunt for good quality XLB. I've heard good things about Shanghai Morning so I thought I would give it a try. The XLB lived up to their reputation - thin skinned, juicy and a generous amount of meat. My only complaint was that they were served a bit on the cooler side, although my tongue probably is better off this way, I'm used to having to blow my XLB before digging in. The other dishes I ordered included seafood hot and sour soup, panfried shanghai noodles, green onion pancakes and stir fried pork with pancake wrappers. The food was decent but nothing extraordinary. I also thought the portions were on the smaller side; however the prices were average. I would definitely stick to the XLB at this place.

After a disappointing meal at Shanghai Gourmet a few days ago, I was in desperate need of some REAL Shanghainese food ASAP! Seriously, I'm still having nightmares about the XLB from Shanghai Gourmet LOL (jk). So my dad and I headed to Alexandra Road (aka Eat St) in Richmond, for some Shanghainese, done right!! :D Shanghai Morning is one of the more well known Shanghainese restaurants in Richmond, they're always busy and there's usually a lineup outside!! Shanghai Morning is located in the same plaza as La Amigo HK Cafe (their african cajun chicken is AWESOME) and MaxNoodle (one of my favourite places for wonton noodle soup!!) Oh guess what? I went to Shanghai Morning without looking at the reviews first and when I got home I found out I had unknowingly ordered all the most popular items on the menu!! I guess I'm finally getting good at this whole ordering thing ;) Service was shockingly great!! Is above average service becoming a thing at chinese restuarants now? LOL! The waitresses were really friendly and they even smiled!! (Shocking I know) ;) They seemed genuinely concerned about my peanut allergy after I asked if the sauce they use is a mixture of peanut/sesame sauce (Turns out it was.) They were quick to fetch extra rice/napkins, and our tea was constantly refilled! Both my dad and I were pretty impressed haha! My dad was just as impressed with the food (and he's really picky, especially when it comes to chinese food!) He even said he likes Shanghai Morning more than Dinesty haha! Most of the items were pretty solid, and for the price point, we really didn't have any complaints!! :D Apparently they had a promotion going on if you order $20 worth of food you get a free serving of xiaolongbao, but we didn't get any :( I totally forgot to ask because I was too distracted by all the food on the table ;) Pan Fried Buns $5.50 3.5/5 stars Pan fried buns is their signature dish!! This was a very good version, the bottom was crispy and evenly pan fried

Don't like it. The food is not fresh. For that price I rather go to Ning Tu or Shanghai River. The noodles and rice there has lots of carbs but very little meat. As well service is not great. The waitress there are very rude and if you spend $20 after being insulted they said their policy is to pay 20% tip to 25% tips. NOT 15%.

(Frozen) glutinous rice siu mai. Not coming here again.

1) Everything tasted decent until our last dish - (steamed) glutinous rice siu mai. There were 5 of us and 4 of us each tried a piece. When we bit into it, the inside was still frozen solid. We told the waitress and she apologized and took the dish (with one piece left) to reheat it and brought back the plate with one reheated piece. That was disappointing. They should either have replaced the full dish or have done a refund, not just reheat a single piece.

2) When we came to pay the bill, which came to $49 ($51.45 after tax), we gave the lady at the counter $56 total. She said, "that's not really enough." Do the math yourself, but that was 10% rounded to the nearest dollar. For the service we got and the unacceptable FROZEN glutinous rice siu mai which should have been refunded or remade completely, that was more than they deserved. We gave her a toonie and she's said, "no, don't need that much," and gave us back a loonie. When I told her about the frozen dish, she just gave a smirk and didn't reply. I can't believe she had the audacity to demand more tips when one of their dishes come out inedible.

They changed the Boss and the entire kitchen/chefs at the restaurant, but sold the name !!! Don't ever come back, the food is so salty and terrible !!! Tastes horrible, don't eat here !!!

Nothing like it. Bye. Bye

Horrible service!. Stopped by in the afternoon on a Tuesday around 2PM. I walked into the restaurant and politely asked the server if they did take out. She said yes. Then she started to take the menu to give to me but quickly turned to talk to the lady at the cashier. The exchanged a few words in mandarin and then to me they said that they there is no takeout because they are CLOSED! I find that this does not make any sense because they did not tell me they are closed when I walked in, there were people eating in the restaurant, and giving me some takeout does not even take that long!

Their beef wrap and radish cake are too salty..

Love this place. I love eating siu long bao and I have to say this is the best place I have tried so far. The bun is big and juicy and the wrapping is thin.......everything is just right. Their noodles' portions are really big. I shared one bowl with my friend and both of us almost couldn't finish it. Will definitely come back more often when I want to have shanghai food

oh and I must also mention, their service is good. The servers were very friendly! Another big plus for this restaurant.

Sucks. They use yucky canned snow vegetable. Over salty ears with over use of soysause. Everything tasted heavy-duty with no heart

Loved the Duck and the XLBs. Oh if we could only get Chinese food half as good as this where we come from -- the capital city of Oregon -- we would be so happy. We got here early before the place started to fill up. The highlights for us were the XLBs -- really good and juicy, and the tea-smoked duck which to our taste was perfect. We thought we ordered the pan fried XLBs too but they never arrived. Oh well -- a good reason to come back. Attention restauranteurs in Richmond: there are no high quality Chinese restaurants in Salem, Oregon. I mean none. The field is wide open. We would welcome you with open arms.

Food were fantastic and offered with great values. Server was very friendly and attentive. Definitely repeating my business.

One of my fav Shanghai restos. Have been eating at this resto long before its current location (they've moved a couple times). Simply put, the food is uber yummy and the price is reasonable. I've been here so many times and foresee many more visits. Some of my fav dishes (all of which are very typical but also very delish) are the pan fried Shanghai noodles, pancake beef roll, xiao long bao, fried mun tao, and tea duck. That's not to say I don't like other dishes (I've eaten many others), but these are some of my "usuals".

Ms. G. Tried 3 things from their menu. The beef roll was OK taste wise, but rather skimpy on the filling. Same with the San-chin pao, hot and juicy but rather small. But the disappointment for me was the dandan noodles. It had ground peanuts alright, and the soup was spicy, but it wasn't tasty! It seemed to be missing something... And 30 minutes later I got quite thirsty! Sorry to say but I prefer Chen's over this place. Pricey little dishes (using cheap ingredients) with little bang for your buck will leave you still hungry (and thirsty to boot)! BKD, ie bwe-kian-dit...

continuing the shanghai adventures in richmond, my mom and i visited shanghai morning in a tiny plaza with limited parking. focusing mostly on dimsum dishes this meal... wine chicken ($5.50): chilled chicken soaked in a wine sauce, a huge portion for cheap with not many bones! deliciously moist chicken and a strong wine flavour, this was a delicious appetizer! 4.5/5 green onion pancake ($3.50): supposed to be panfried but came out deep fried making it quite oily meaning i could only have one piece despite it being quite good. 3.5/5 xiao long bao ($4.95): of course the pork soup dumplings! what meal is complete without this?! filled to the brim with soup, these had a thin skin and delicious flavour although a bit lighter than others. one of my favourite xlb's to date!! 5/5 spicy wontons ($5.95): LOTS of delicious wontons in a spicy chili oil. perfectly spicy and one of my favourite dim sum dishes. nothing bad to say at all...so good. 5/5 overall: shanghai morning is one of my FAVOURI

The Shanghai dumplings at this restaurant are bigger than most in Richmond and very flavourful. Probably one of the best I’ve had.
Since I had Chen's Shanghai the night before, Shanghai Morning did not even have a chance (sorry!). The XLBs and pan fried buns are juicy, but not tasty, and the other dishes are average or barely average. I will mention they have a smoked chicken I really wanted to try, but they were sold out.. maybe it is that good? Or they do not make much? For service, it did not look too bad. I noticed the waitress walking around refilling tea cups.

Alright. Before we start, I have to say that this restaurant several “the best we have ever tried”. So be prepared!! It locates on Alexandra Rd. We have tried (or at least......To conclude, must try their xiao long bao and pan fried pork bun!!!

Given the freshness and quality of ingredients for the price point, Shanghai Morning Restaurant of Richmond, BC is a contender for XLB eateries in the west. It mimics more of the authentic experience but with flavours that are subtle with sizable buns enveloping a large portion of soup with every bite.

We ordered 5 items for the two of us, which was way too much so we packed some things home. I would come back for the XLB and spicy dumplings for sure and of course try their other items on the menu. Although they didn't have that many people working, they managed to fill our teacups still several times without us asking:)

The leek cake was a little on the chewy side, I’d personally would have preferred a crispier finish but oh well. Mrs Badger loves that they are packed full of chopped leeks and egg. Tasty but maybe a pass since we’ve all had better.

Tonight, Shanghai food lovers can rejoice as I have found the holy grail and its name is… 小南國上海小吃 (Shanghai Morning Restaurant)
YummyWorkshop
This is one of my favourite dishes, the flour wrapper was tender and warm. There was also enough flavourful beef with the Hoi Sin sauce and cucumbers. It would have been even better if there was more browning and crust on the wrapper though.

XLB: Juicy! Drunken Chicken: This chicken is cold, it is juicy, and drenched in wine. The marinating liquid for this bird is 50% chicken broth and 50% rice wine. Although regarded as an appetizer, there’s not reason to label this to a started. It is very good as a main course, especially for the portion sized provided here.

Shanghai Morning Restaurant 小南國上海小吃 is now one of my favorite go-to XLB restuarants. This little place took over what previously used to be Twinkle (bubble joint). Shanghai Morning is opened by previous owners of Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen 白玉蘭餐館. So if you are ever wondering why just don’t taste the same. Now you know! They’ve moved shop, sold it’s old name and opened shop as SM.

Anyways, let’s get back to the food. Particularly the Xiao Long Bao 小籠包. Juicy little big suckers I tell you. There is a lot of soup and meat. Watch out for an explosion if not carefully eaten. The meat is well seasoned and not mushy. If you liked Chen’s before, there’s no reason this would be any different.

Overall, the girlfriend was a bit disappointed of the overall food it served and just didn’t live to par compared to Dinesty and Shanghai River. The prices were a bit cheaper compared to the two but it also wasn’t as good. Everything was nearly there but not quite. The pan-fried pork bun was a disappointment. We didn’t make a reservation but when we got in it was packed, we waited for about 10 to 15 minutes for a table and we were squished in this tiny little corner with a chair, a stool and a small square table. It felt like I was eating on the streets of Hong Kong. What used to be “Twinkle Twinkle”, a Taiwanese cafe turned into a restaurant with minimal adjustments. It was just jammed pack. The service was mediocre, they were busy but didn’t really come back besides for serving the food. We ordered a rice, but it never came.

Chen’s, while being very good at their dumpling dishes, was never a good Shanghai generalist – so some of the other dishes were merely passable. The potstickers were as good as before, but the flakey radish pastry was not up to standard (Suhang – who I think is the best at this flakey stuff – makes a good version).
OurFoodAdventure
I’ve had the smoked duck with tea before and this dish was absolutely delightful! It came within 2 minute of the green onion pancake. The exterior of the duck is crispy and the meat is moist with a strong hint of tea within the meat. There is no gaminess of the duck at all! It is just a very well done dish!

Late last month, we decided to throw caution to the wind and headed into Richmond for Shanghainese. I dread going into Richmond because of the potential car crashes and long lineups for everything, but it was early on a Saturday and we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. We decided to head to Shanghai Morning , just off of Alexandra Road (aka Eat Street, no, not the TV show). Let's start with the most disappointing dish and work our way to the best. This was their Beef Roll , and as evident in the picture, despite the roll being quite large, the amount of beef is rather lacking. The hoisin sauce had a stronger presence than the beef. Also, I like the outside layer to be a bit more fried, with a least more than a touch of flakiness to them. These were a bit too soft for any textural contrast and the lack of filling made them a bit boring. Our next favourite dish was the Xiao Long Baos (XLBs) . The soupiness was amazing, but unfortunately, the skin on these were a bit tough and
