Review Diplomat Bakery - Richmond

Stephanie Snopek
We ordered special "mermaid" cupcakes for our daughters mermaid-themed birthday party, they were a huge hit! I asked for two-toned buttercream swirls on top and special sprinkles, and half of them made with chocolate cake and half vanilla cake. They turned out gorgeous and to me had the perfect level of sweetness (not too sweet which I like). It was hard to find a bakery in Richmond that did custom cupcakes like this so I'll definitely be back for other special occasions!

Had really high expectations on their cakes but really disappointed. Mango cheesecake: sour, very artificial flavour. Tiramisu: dry, very dry. White chocolate bailey: very sweet I can only taste "sweet" instead of other things. Even T&T has better cakes than this tbh.

On the sweeter side, but still good! It reminds me of Trafiq in Vancouver. The triple chocolate mouse cake was my favorite over the red velvet cake. Each slice was $5.50, buy 5 slices and get 6th free. My daughter wanted the chocolate cupcake but I’ll definitely skip that next time, it was a bit dry.

My boyfriend bought me cakes for my birthday and I have to say, out of these different flavor my favorite is torn between tiramisu and triple chocolate. The tiramisu has just enough coffee flavor and the cream is light. The triple chocolate mousse is so smooth and flavor. Not too strong and not too sweet. It’s perfect. Highly recommend this shop!

Cakes, doughnuts and pastries. They got em' all. Top fancy pants dessert spot in Richmond. Treat yourself.

Very nice store front. No dining in at the moment and limit 6 customer inside. Lots of choices of different cake/donuts/Danish/muffins to choose from. They also have gluten free options. My favourite there is their mango cheese cake, and it never disappoint!! I'd love to try other cakes I just don't have the stomach space for it!!

The cake was very good. Very fluffy and filling and flavourful. For $5 each the donuts were not worth it at all. For that price your much better off driving to duffins for much better tasting donuts at half the price. Very dissapointed paying $20 for 4 donuts which were mediocre at best.

Best lookin’ cake, eh? Interesting flavours, good new location, it was so difficult to decide which one of the cakes I should get! Ended up with this Mango & Matcha cakes. I swear, I could’ve gotten more flavours.

Super cute bakery in the more residential side of steveston! Really love their cake and drinks! It got pretty busy but service is fast to beat the line! I love that you can walk by the water just near by and it's not flooded with tourists like in central steveston.

Only big downside is the only cold coffee/tea drink they serve is iced Americano!

Well today is my brothers birthday! His girlfriend brought over to our home a birthday cake. I've never heard of the diplomat and it's located in Richmond. After our sad attempt to sing a happy birthday song we sliced into the cake... And dude, it's a cheese cake INSIDE A CAKE. That's right you heard me. I was really quite impressed and above all, it tasted like a asian cake, meaning it wasn't that sweet. What a joy and surprise the elements this cake has. I will definitely go on my day off to check out the diplomat because I was also told they had a white chocolate bailey's cake!
Oh and I was also told that they sell individual cakes too! That's awsome for people who are not sure what to get or just want to have a slice to themselves. Great option.

Update: I went there in person for the first time. Chef Stenson had mention they are moving across the street in may of this year. I told him his cake was amazing. A master of his own art indeed. He was kind enough to offer me a slice of cake and Americano on the house. I asked the kind lady who served me what her favorite is and she mentioned the white chocolate and man oh man I'm so happy she recommended it. It's light and not too sweet! Ever close your eyes when you like something your eating? LOL
The Americano just lovely... Had a nice froth...
Nothing but hand claps, seriously... Wow!
Two thumbs up, I'm bumping my 4.5 rating up to a full 5!

Great bakery with a variety to select from. On this visit, my wife and I shared a Lemon Chocolate New York Cheesecake and an Almond Croissant. The cheesecake was smooth and tart, showcasing great technique in seamlessly melding the crust and cake layer. Unlike many of its counterparts, this almond croissant featured a decadent almond cream which provided a much needed texture and flavour contrast. The service was friendly and informative. We're returning to this memorable establishment for sure!

A nice little spot close to or in the town of Steveston. It is tucked in a new building so keep an eye out. A good inexpensive thing to try to see how fresh bakeries treats are is a Nanaimo bar- many will taste slightly stale and that to me is a telltale of what's to come. Diplomats was FRESH and tasty. I will be back

The cakes are delicious! My favourites are definitely the triple chocolate mousse cake and cappuccino cake. Next time you're in steveston, stop by and give it a go! You won't regret it.

Very impressed!. Came here to pick up a last minute cake for a friends birthday, and decided on the chocolate ganache cake in the display. The girl at the counter was very nice and helpful, and they wrote a custom birthday message on the cake and dressed it up with some fruits an an icing rose. The cake was big enough for 15 people, twice the size of the cakes you'll get at a lot of vancouver bakeries for the same price. And it was delicious! Very rich and chocolaty, but not overly sweet, really nice balance. Had lots of people asking where it was from. I didn't try anything else from this bakery but I definitely would come again.

Meh. I've been coming here for a couple of years now. The slices are getting thinner but the prices keep rising. Service also gets slower and slower.

J.L. I do not write reviews often, but the service was so bad that i wanted to find an email address off the website so i can complain about the service i received. This was not the first time i received poor service from the same girl. First time, i let it slide because people have their "off days". Yesterday, i received service from the same girl, and she was extremely rude with a lot attitude. She is a little asian girl, perhaps Chinese. It seems as if she's hating life working there. I love the baked goods, and have been coming weekly ever since i learned about this bakery. It is sad because the service makes me not want to visit this cake shop anymore. It is not close for me and i don't care to drive far and receive attitude from the front staff.

One of the ladies who assisted me was very rude. I asked her nicely if I could have anything written on the cheesecake that I wanted then she just gave me a bad look and told me "what do you want it to say?" And instead of handing me a pen and paper, she wanted me to just say it to her. So I did. Then the cake was sent in the back room for the dedication to be written, after 5 minutes the chef had put it back in the counter so the lady who assisted me can show it to me. After 15 minutes (no kidding), no one had given me my cake yet. I had to get one of the ladies' attention to wrap up my cake then when they showed it to me, they got one word wrong. So I asked them if they could make it again then the rude lady went up to me and said "that wasn't what you told me awhile ago". If I could only shout at her, I would have. But then I just asked karma to take care of her. If ever that lady reads this review, just a note, if someone asks to write something on a cake, give them a pen and paper so you won't blame your customers for your mistake.

Best Red Velvet Cake in Town. Have tried Red Velvet cake from a few different restaurant/bakeries around the Lower Mainland and The Diplomat has the best one by far. The cake is moist and has just the right balance of chocolate flavour with the tanginess of the cream cheese frosting.

Their cheesecakes were okay nothing special

I love their European cheesecake, Red velvet cake and the Mango mousse cake! Their cake is not too sweet and the European cheesecake is not too heavy. Always visit this place when I go to Steveston.

Best Blueberry Cheesecake!

Best cakes i have ever had. Cannot find even one bakery that is at the same level.

Forgot to make birthday cake. Ordered a 9" Diplomat Cake for my son's birthday and when I showed up to pay for it, I was told there was no order. When I asked how they'd make this up to me (as I believe in good customer service) I was told that "Chef said he wouldn't do anything" but he'd make the cake for me. Well, after 5 previous cakes bought from the Diplomat, this was my last. Hello Steveston Bakery! I'm all yours now.

Jewel of Steveston. Not quite in Steveston anymore but still a jewel!. Diplomat Bakery has been a local treasure for as long as I can remember. This bakery used to be on the corner of Moncton and No. 1 road, right at the Steveston Village. It has since moved to London Road, just off No. 2 road by the very end and close to the dyke area, by Bayview.

Their new location is much bigger than the last one but still is one of the best bakeries in town. I've had many of their cakes and I always request for Diplomat Bakery cakes whenever we're holding events. My absolute favorite is the Diplomat cake, which is layers and layers of puff pastry and butter cream. The puff pastry is light, flaky and crispy while the butter cream is delicious and rich but not very heavy at all. This is quite similar to something else that they have which they call a Napoleon Slice. Some of my other favorites include the European Cheesecake, Strawberry topped N.Y. Cheesecake and the Blueberry Cream Cheesecake. (I love cheesecake)

I also love their Pear flan, which unfortunately has gone up in price. A very simple pie with pears and glaze, it is so tasty. I always have huge portions whenever I get this.

I can't eat chocolate (unfortunately) but I was told their Triple Chocolate Cake is to die for. Other chocolate treats that I can't have but have heard great things about: Chocolate croissant and the hot chocolate.

As far as their selection for savory eats, the Calypso wrap and the Sausage rolls are my favorite. The Calypso wrap includes rice, chicken, kidney beans, vegetables and lentils in it. There is a hint of spice but it's not overwhelming at all. I love the pastry they use for the sausage rolls, it makes it very filling.

Other favorites include the almond butter croissant, the cinnobun, the raspberry coconut cake and the strawberry smoothie.

Because I was feeling adventurous today, I had the carrot cake and the vanilla cupcake. The carrot cake is moist and isn't too sweet (perfect if you like moderate sweetness, not sweet enough for me) which is the same with the icing. The pistachios add a nice touch. The vanilla cupcake is also moist but not sweet, which is great if you like moderate sweetness. I like my desserts a bit sweeter than these.

Overall a very good place. The washrooms are huge and clean and there is parking right inside the lot. Street parking is also available. The area is also very pleasant; you can walk around after you sit and enjoy your Diplomat treats to burn off the calories.

Would I come back? Every time I'm in the area.

Small little shop near steveston village. The pastries and cakes are above average. Price is moderate.

Excellent! I really love the cake there...But I've only tried their cakes. I really like the blueberry cream cheesecake, totally recommend it! I also recommend the hazelnut cake, the mango cream cheesecake, and the espresso cake. The espresso cake is more on the flavorful side compared to the hazelnut cake. The mango cream cheesecake and blueberry cream cheesecake are perfect for those who don't like super chocolate-y cake.

I went for there for the very first time last summer and got a red velvet cupcake and it tasted divine! My favourite part was the cream cheese frosting on top. Yum! Now whenever I go I never know what to get because everything look so delicious.

All of the items look incredibly good, but one thing in particular catches my eye today; the red velvet cake. It’s fuzzy and red. I know, it’s gimmicky. Well, I guess my tastes just aren’t that sophisticated yet.
Every Day Is A Food Day
I ended up with a slice of one of my favourites: the Red Velvet Cake . I love the creamy smooth cheese filling on the red chocolate sponge cake! Delcious! Must go back to try those other cakes! In addition, they have a lot more simplistic pastries and desserts like chocolate covered cream puffs, cream horns dipped in chocolate, danishes, croissants...etc. Their prices are also reflective of their simplistic approach.

It’s this hidden gem no one knows about. Diplomat is very nice both inside and outside the store. It used to be on Number 1 and Moncton, but now it’s moved along London Road by the end of #2 road in a little complex. WAY out in the boonies! It’s definitely a hot spot: a bakery of cakes and pastries and it’s really good! I love their fruit tarts, fruit flans and cheesecake. I don’t normally drink Americanos but it was good there too. The bakery/cafe is quaint and nice. And there is parking in the back!

The first time I tried Diplomat Bakery, was when my brother brought home some of their Blueberry Cheesecake a few years ago, and I thought it was delicious. One of the best cakes I ever had at the time. I really wanted to go back, but never made the time out to go to Steveston. After high tea at Adorabelle, we made our way over to Diplomat since we were kind of close by. It’s a really popular place for cyclists to have a snack. They have a huge selection of cakes, and pastries. They also serve hot soup and sandwiches too. You can order full cakes, or cakes by the slice. If you order 6, you can get another two slices free. I ordered the a couple Blueberry Cream Cheesecakes, a couple Red Velvet, Mango Cream Cheesecake, Cappuccino Cake, Ganache Cake, Hazelnut Cake, and a Gluten-Free Cake. Unfortunately, we were only able to try a couple before they went bad. I shouldn’t have bought so many that day since I went on a trip a few days after. Of course I had to try the Bluberry Crea

It’s basically the True Confections (cake café) of Richmond. The style, look, and choices at Diplomat Bakery are similar to those offered at True Confections, but not quite as refined. I can’t say 100% because I haven’t tried enough, but True Confections

Polly and I revisited Diplomat Bakery for our cake meet. This time, we went to the new location on London Road. It is a new commercial and residential area where many constructions are still in progress. The location seems a bit remote now but after all t
