Review Little Ongpin - Richmond

Marvellous lunch before or after a visit to Ikea. Seemingly simple clear soup packed with lemony celery flavour, deep fried batter free fish delicious, even the egg was perfect, the little pink dipping sce so tasty. For me the eggplant salad took the trophy, such a lovely mix of flavours. And the Flan desert was worth coming for alone, needs to be eaten not described.

Born and raised Richmond Fil-Can and this is my favorite Filipino restaurant in the city. Price is excellent for the quality of dishes they serve. Most importantly, their staff are friendly and I am never disappointed with their service. Clean and fast, ambience could use upgrading though but most of the patrons are local residents and a lot of employees in the area of all races looking for great Filipino Asian dishes. A lot of the offices in the area do take out orders for groups for office parties as well. Call ahead for sure!

For was good, a bit over priced. Had lots of flavor but the beef tough and had been tenderized with tenderizer which removed any beef flavor. I would go back if the process were cheaper and they used quality meat. Had potential for amazing food but it fell short. The service was friendly and inviting.

Well It's not fine dining, for sure. You get a stack of plates with spoons and forks for you to distribute to your companions. Tables are too close that your back might bump into someone seated at the other table. The Filipino dishes taste very good but some like the "sisig" is too salty for me. Prices have gone up though still reasonable. Service is good and quick. Oh, if you are not Christian just ignore the small stickers on the fiber glass barrier.

Great, authentic filipino restaurant that serves a wide variety of food. It is more on the pricier end compared to other filipino restaurants but their quality of food is worth it. The restaurant is small so try reserving ahead of time or come in early before their rush hours.

Burnt sisig and the "crispy" pata was dry and leathery, like it was re-heated. The food was quite good prior to the pandemic but the quality is now significantly compromised. The decor has strong religious elements/messaging that is potentially uncomfortable and segregating to others of diverse orientation and beliefs.

It's been many years since we visited Little OngPing Restaurant in Richmond on No. 5 Road. It's a very busy place for lunch, especially on weekends. The restaurant has many large tables, great for family gathering. The service was a bit slow due to how busy they were, but they were polite when you wave them down. They offer many authentic Filipino dishes, and all looked very delicious. The three dishes we ordered had delightfully rich flavours. Ongpin is a great little eatery for good Filipino food. Recommended.

Another Filipino restaurant to go to.. Food and service is great. They have a lot of food selection - definitely we will keep coming back until we tasted everything on the menu hehehe

It has the best Filipino menus to offer esp the sinigang na bangus belly, pork sisig, kare-kare, you name it and always serve ala carte. My only concern is they close so early unlike their asian competitors.

My son Vince always asking for the barbecue chicken he likes it so much...I like the seafood medley mutya Ng cavite and the mixed vegies lohonchay, so good...

We enjoyed our first and only visit on this restaurant. The place was packed with customers..their halo halo was really good.

No common sense!!! I went there to order several dishes to pick up in a few hours for dinner. I had placed the order in the afternoon and mentioned I would be back later to pick up for dinner. They asked for my name and number so I had given it to them just in case they had any issues.I had ordered over $100 worth of food and I even offered to pay up front. When I arrived to pick up my order they told me that they didn't have one of the dishes for my order which I had ordered 3 of. It was the adobo pusit. Their reason was that their seafood supplier didn't deliver their supply.....so you took my number down for no reason...I believe all restaurants would've have called the customer and tell them that they wouldn't be able to fulfill the order...am I right? Some commonsense and intelligence should've been used....but it seems the staff is bobo. I wasn't even given a discount....I had to share this with you so if you ever placed a large order for takeout...be sure to confirm they can complete your full order before you get there and are disappointed and angry they didn't.

Had lunch with my mechanic. It turned out to be an unpleasant experience. I ordered Lechon kawali, kare kare and pansit. The Lechon was tough and hard to chew and gave me toothache, meat in kare kare is also tough. The only thing that is good was the bagoong.

Yes. We,re Eating Again.
We have eaten at Little Ongpin quite often and it always seems to be packed! As is often the case with Filipino places, not a lot is spent on decor but the emphasis is on food and friends. This time we were there with the family for an early Christmas dinner (you could say). We ordered and the food arrived when it was ready! Nothing is waiting under heat lamps but is cooked to order! Sisig is one of my favorite Filipino dishes. As with so many great cuisines of the world, the best dishes are those where creative cooks take what they can afford and what is available to make something delicious. The main ingredient in Sisig is pork face (jowls, snout, ears) but it arrives at the table redolent of garlic and is wonderful and crispy on a sizzling platter! Get past any squeamishness you may have and try this wonderful dish! Bicol Express is another one of my favorites. Pork in coconut with vegetables and chilis. It came with a nice little bite from the chilis but the pork was a tad chewy in this case. Lechon Kawali might just be the national dish. Wonderful deep-fried pork belly, crispy on the outside and tasty and tender inside. Served with a tasty vinegar based sauce. One of Marie's favorites is the Stuffed Squid. It is a little too far on the fishy side for me. Filipinos use a lot of shrimp paste and fish sauce and sometimes dishes are a little too strong for my palate. I have learned that a side of shrimp paste, judiciously added to things can be quite amazing. Still, after tasting it, I left the squid for others to eat. No Filipino meal is complete without rice. This time everyone wanted fried rice. There were lots of tasty shrimp in this version. I was happy that some veges were ordered. There was a nice bit of variety and they were not overcooked. Not bad! Finally, more squid! This was not exactly life altering but it was nicely cooked and crispy! Little Ongpin is a good place to be introduced to Filipino cuisine. The menus come complete with pictures so you can know what you are ordering even if you do not speak Tagalog. There is something available for the adventurous and not so adventurous!

I went in and sat myself down. For 10 minutes I waited for someone to give me a menu, but even though the servers walked right by me, I had to flag one down and ask for one. Not a great start. <br/><br/>I ordered the Chicken Adobo on rice, and asked to give me garlic rice. I liked that the dish wasn't overly sweet, but the chicken pieces were boneless & skinless (skin and bones add flavour to the dish), and the sauce was thickened with cornstarch (a shortcut that cuts down on cooking time). The garlic rice seemed to be simply white rice mixed with ready-fried garlic bits that you can buy in any asian supermarket (another shortcut). <br/><br/>Edible, but not overly impressed.

Per recommendation by a friend, had dinner with another 4 friends with this restaurant and we’re not happy with our experienced. The staff are friendly and accommodating and their service is good. We’re dissatisfied with some of our orders especially the Beef Caldereta as it tastes different than the usual Filipino Caldereta. Lack of flavors and ingredients. The Grilled Pork Belly and barbecue are good. Their prices are fair with what you get. Will not go back here.

Don't go there!  The waitress were good, but the owner tried to rip us off.<br/> <br/>We were served food that we didn't order.  When I told the waitress that it was different from our order, she told me that they were going to make our order. <br/><br/>  "Aren't you going to take it back to the kitchen," I asked.  <br/>  "No, you can have it," she replied. So we ate one-third of it.<br/><br/>We waited and waited for our order, but no food.  Finally, when I asked about our order, she asked if the "wrong dish" that was served would be OK with us since they were both noodle dishes.  I couldn't believe they would say that.  I replied, "No, I want the dish that I ordered."<br/><br/>So we waited another ten minutes before we finally got our order.  All the while, I could see the owner telling the waitress what to do.  When it came time to pay the bill, they put BOTH noodle dishes on our bill, even the one that the restaurant screwed up on.  They expected us to pay for a dish we didn't even order.  I'm positive that the owner ordered the waitress to put the extra dish on our bill.<br/><br/>Only after I complained, the owner took it off the bill.  Not a good feeling when they tried to rip us off!!

○good service <br/>○good food/ we enjoyed all dishes particularly the Shanghai spring rolls<br/>○good price for quality and quantity/ they are very big portioned so good for family dinner <br/>○they tend to close earlier than their posted hours so call first before u go, we came 3x different days prior to today and they always closed early <br/>○would I go back? Maybe only because this isn't the type of food I'd eat regularly <br/><br/>

ALWAYS CLOSED WHEN I COME HERE!!!!! I HAVE TRIED COMING HERE THREE TIMES NOW AND THEY ALWAYS CLOSE EARLY!!!! EVERY TIME I GET THERE AROUND 7PM AND THEIR SIGH SAYS OPEN UNTIL 8PM OR 9PM, SO THERE SHOULD BE PLENTY OF TIME FOR ME TO SIT DOWN AND EAT BUT FOR WHAT EVER REASON, THEY CLOSE EARLY. IF IT HAPPENED ONCE THEN I COULD ACCEPT IT, BUT THREE TIMES?!?!?! THIS IS VERY ANNOYING BECAUSE I LIVE IN VANCOUVER AND I CAME ALL THE WAY TO RICHMOND TO EAT HERE, WASTING MY TIME AND GAS FOR NOTHING!!!!! SO WATCH OUT FOR THIS, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BELIEVE THE HOURS THEY HAVE POSTED ONLINE OR ON THEIR DOOR BECAUSE, MOST LIKELY, IT'S GOING TO BE WRONG!!!!!! PEOPLE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!

Great family run joint in Richmond. Place is a bit small and service can start out slow but they are super friendly. Menu is quite extensive, had trouble choosing for two people! Food was tasty and portions are quite big for reasonable prices. Will definitely be back to try other dishes.

Yesterday wasn't the only time I've eaten in this restaurant. This is my favourite Filipino resto! I always come here either with my family, boyfriend, or friends. I love their bagoong rice which comes with egg, mango, and meat. It's super delicious! And of course their sisig which comes in a sizzling plate and is so tasty and crispy. My other faves are the bbq skewers, lechon kawali, crispy fried shrimp, and sago't gulaman. They get Filipino food just right. Their service is great too! Such a friendly place. The place isn't very big but it's well kept and mostly clean. Always my go-to Filipino restaurant.

<br/><br/>(Ongpin Value Meal #3) Chargrilled pork belly $7.95 ~ served with egg, rice, salad and soup

This is the first time I try the philippino food that is better than I expect, service is so so & overall experience is very good. Although the place is a little bit small, the atmosphere is warm & cozy, will be there again.

I had to go to Costco in Richmond to get some groceries on a weekday. Lorna came along with me as we wanted to go out for lunch after groceries shopping. Initially, we intended to go to a Chinese restaurant on Bridgeport Road but I missed the turn in and as I tried to find a way to turn back, I got further and further until No. 5 Road. So, we changed our plan and stopped at the strip mall on No. 5 and Cambie.  Moreover, I needed to get some minced ginger from Fruitcana. This is how we ended having lunch at Little Ongpin Restaurant.

I feel that filipino food is over price a lot of the time, if not, most. Little Ongpin is OKAY in terms of their portion sizing matching the prices, but I feel like I can make a filipino homecooked meal much better and flavourful. I find the taste is never consistent with the dishes, sometimes too salty, other times missing a key ingredient. Regardless, if you want you Filipino fix and are too lazy to cook, go for it. Small cramped restaurant, incredibly crowded on weekends.
Picky Diner
I have always wanted to check out Little Onpin for their colourful, rich and comforting filipino dishes. And finally we made it there after our badminton game this week. Their menu was huge – deciding what to get was no easy task. Java BBQ Chicken ($11.95) was slightly smoky, and we could totally taste coffee on the chicken and then dipping sauce. Although a bit on the sweet side, it was moist and delicious!

Best sisig in the lower mainland! I'm filipino and find that the food here is just like what my parents would make at home. Service is ok. Could be better

It is quite frankly the best Filipino eatery here in Richmond. At Little Ongpin, we are regularly satisfied. Thanks to the joint's friendly staff, and their tasty, authentic Filipino dishes, Little Ongpin has provided us with a go-to Pinoy joint whenever we need one. We particularly enjoy their smoky, flavourful sisig (pork or bangus) as well as their value meal combos. Despite not being the most inexpensive restaurant, Little Ongpin gives you the bang for your buck, as you will certainly enjoy their True Pinoy flavour.

Worst service and pretty disgusting food. save your money! It's not worth the hype. And when you actually complain or give them feedback about their food and service, all they can say is "Oh".

Not freshly cooked but freshly reheated. Considering that it's our first time here, we were very, very, disappointed. <br/><br/>Saturday, lunch time, you'd think this place will be busy. I guess we're lucky that it wasn't. There was a total of 6 tables occupied. We're the seventh. We ordered 'Sinigang na baboy' and BBQ platter. Based on the high praises that we heard for this place, we couldn't wait for our food. We were so excited. <br/><br/>About 10-15 minutes later, our food started arriving. Sinigang was first. The sinigang was good. We couldn't get enough of the sinigang. Then the BBQ platter came. Our high hopes and expectations came crashing down. It crashed so hard that even the sinigang couldn't lift our spirits up. <br/><br/>Presentation was ok. It was presented on a big platter with banana leaf. But you can tell that it wasn't freshly cooked. The bbq skewers, chopped pork, squid and the mussels were dry. And it wasn't even hot or at least warm. We asked them why it's not hot. They took it back and reheated by microwave. The meats weren't tender, it was very hard to chew. The mussels were tough and rubbery. It felt like we were eating a rubber band. You can definitely tell that these were probably cooked the day before and was just reheated a few times already. <br/><br/>When we talked to the person in charge, we were told that "it's because it was cooked from frozen".<br/><br/>We live in Maple Ridge and traveled all the way to Richmond so that we can try what everyone is talking about. I guess we should've just went to PinPin. Saved a bit on gas and for sure that we won't have any complaints about our food. <br/><br/>Never again going back here. <br/><br/>Picture attached is meat from our BBQ skewers.

Just okay!. Not bad, but nothing especial either.<br/>We ordered Dinuguan, Tokwat baboy (didn't like it!) The pork Sisig was good. Lumpiang shanghai & kikiam doesn't look good but tastes okay.

Pinakamasarap na filipino restaurant na nakainan ko sa buong Canada!Mabuhay Little Ongpin!!!!

I was a little hesitant in the beginning, I mean; Chinese/Filipino fusion restaurant?! Both the food orders were really good. I haf fish in Black bean sauce with a side of garlic rice. My g/f had spicy pork in cocanut milk with a side of java rice. Good portions, parking, servicen and when I asked for water, they left a pitcher without asking!I WILL be back!
Food
Great Surprise!!. Cannot believe I waited this long to try this place. I lived literally 5 mins away from this restaurant but was never motivated enough to go due to where it is and the way it looks on the outside. <br/><br/>Anyway, finally decided to try last night and the food was surprisingly good! I was expecting it to be those greasy Chinese food you get from the food court but I was wrong!<br/><br/>We ordered the spicy beef short rib, this coconut sauce with shrimp and beans, deep fried pork hog, and chicken java combo. The portions were huge and everything was done perfectly - not over cooked or overly salty! (which is a common issue in many Asian places). <br/><br/>The service was decent and the waitress was nice. <br/><br/>Will definitely come back!<br/><br/>O, also remember to try their dessert called "halo halo". Its a dessert with shaved ice and beans and ice cream. Similar to that Vietnamese ice drink but better!
Saeryn Correll
Nice halo halo.. Came here just for the dessert near the end of the night, though they were out of about half of their desserts. Went with the halo halo anyway, and found it to be pretty good. For five-fifty, there's a lot of ice with ice cream to be had. My only wish is that there were more beans with it, particularly since it's all at the bottom and you just have to keep digging around.

Fabulous Dinner. I seriously can't wait to go back here! Had the bbq pork combo with java rice- the pork was so juicy, perfect amount of fat, and the marinade/glaze was mouthwatering. Java rice was new for me, but I loved the flavour and it had lots of meat in it. Also tried the lumpia (spring rolls). They had a very tasty filling and were fried to crispy perfection. Also had the special fried pork hock. The cracking was heaven, and the meat was tender. The dipping sauce was a great foil to the crackling. The whole staff was incredibly friendly to us and were very helpful with our first experience with the cuisine. Can't wait to take friends and family here and try more dishes.

Friendly and Delicious. Came here the other week and ordered the sisig pork (crispy pork cooked on a sizzling skillet) and the miki bihon (noodles) and an order of one of their soups (which I've forgotten the name of) All were supremely delicious and the sisig was one of the best I've ever had. I actually went to Goto King later in the week because it was nearby, but unfortunately no comparison, Ongpin takes the cake.

Check your bill. The place looks like a Canteen..Food is ok,its a plus they serve Halo Halo...they do their bill by hand, good thing I did my own math,,it turned out it was $10+ over..The cashier didnt look surprised ..made me wonder if it was really a mistake ?? but will still go back to eat,,but will check the bill .

Authentic enough!. Ordered the daing na bangus (butterflied milkfish), crispy pata (pork leg), palabok (noodles) and pork barbecue (on a stick). Masarap (tasty)! Brings back the taste of home (Manila) minus the hassle of making yourself the comfort foods I miss! Prices are reasonable and the staff very friendly too. Definitely recommended.

I'm on a mission to try out all the exotic cuisines in Vancouver.. Last week, I went for Filipino food. I was surprised to find that there isn't a lot of Filipino restaurants around, but since I was in Richmond with Mama Rae that day, we headed to Little Ongpin.

... Crispy Pata: Deep fried pork hock... very crisp but slightly hard skin; meat tender and moist; lots of skin, fat and bones, actual meat portion woefully small...

Looking for a good Filipino restaurant in Richmond is like looking for a needle in a haystack (pardon the cliche). I can only name around 3 as opposed to the hundreds of popular Chinese dimsum places in this city! One of the more popular Filipino restaurants though is called the Little Ongpin located on No. 5 road behind the huge Shopper's Drugmart. The exterior actually looks like a mix between traditional Filipino and Chinese designs- the use of eye catching color and big bold letters that's easy to read from afar. Inside carries the same theme of simplicity through the choices on fixtures and decor that's actually very Filipino. The top half of the walls are lined with mirrors that actually help make the place a lot brighter and more welcoming. The bottom half is covered with neatly lined bamboo sticks that give it a more oriental feel. We were greeted almost immediately by the staff with smiles and showed us to our seats. The table setting is definitely simplistic, not at all clutt

Sometimes you just crave Filipino food. That greasy, fried goodness just overwhelms me sometime and yes, I know I could probably make it at home or go over to my parents place and ask them to cook, but there are just some things you can’t make at home as easy. On our way to see a movie at Silvercity Riverport, I subliminally suggested we go to Little Ong Pin. And by subliminally suggesting, I mean I’ve been harassing him to go try out a new Filipino joint soon. And yes, I’ve been here before but that was a while ago. So let’s get to the review. First off, I ordered a Royal. It’s basically a Fanta Orange drink, but called Royal. They also serve Sarsi if you’re feeling the Filipino cravings. The dish I ordered comes with soup, and it’s basically a broth made with onions, carrots and celery with some chicken or pork most likely. It was light and good, but nothing too memorable. Up next is the Lumpiang Shanghai, i.e. fried lumpia. They look a little worse for wear but they tasted fine. A r

For this post, I decided to write about the 3 places I started visiting quite frequently or will be paying more visits to. First, they are all different types of cuisines; Philipino, rustic North American, and Shanghainese. Although they are all very different, all of these places have one thing in common, crispy fried pork , my most recent addiction. If this trend keeps up, I'm going to have to hit the gym everyday or land myself in the hospital very soon. Little Ongpin It was 8 pm on a weekday and of course I was craving fried pork hock at Little Ongpin, a modest, friendly Philipino restaurant on No. 5 road. The server informed us that they didn't have the small portion for the pork hock (which I wasn't sure why), but since the medium size is only a dollar more, sure! supersize me! Sure enough, I regret eating it once I got home and crawled into bed. But take a look at the glorious portion of the soft and tender pork hock with thick, extra crispy skin and extra thicker layers of fat.

Little Ongpin Restaurant serves up Filipino - Chinese cuisine. It's located in Richmond on No. 5 Road. I came here with M and Scarface for a Balut eating contest. I was in the contest but I didn't win. Before the contest, M, Scarface and I order some dishes. Since I have zero clue about Filipino food, Scarface did all the ordering. Java Rice is essentially garlic rice. It tasted good and went well with the food, but it was intensely oily. At the bottom, there was a lot of oil. Pork Sisig is marinated meat on a hot plate. What I found strange was that the hot plate wasn't actually very hot. Scarface said the dish wasn't very good and isn't how it is in the Philippines. Beef Salpicao is like stir fried garlic beef. The meat wasn't very tender at all but the flavour was ok. Pork and tofu was completely different that what we were expecting. Usually it would be pork meat instead of the pig skin. All of us didn't like the dish. Overall, M, Scarface and I were disappointed with the meal desp

Value Meal #3 at this delightful Filipino-Chinese eatery has ingrained itself into my lunchtime cravings so deeply that it’s hard to order anything else when I visit. $7.95 gets you the day’s soup, deep-fried pork belly, garlic rice, and a fried egg (mix into the rice–trust me). For a true Pinoy experience, eat the pork with a heap of the bagoong salad that accompanies the combo, but beware: shrimp paste is pungent and not to be had in copious quantities on your first try. Other value meals are available if you prefer fried fish or BBQ & spring rolls to pork–all under $8, and all worth trying at least once.
