Review Kari House - Richmond

The roti canai is the bomb here! It is authentic and easily the top 3 roti I have tried in my life. They also serve a very decent laksa. I love how it is not too creamy and heavy, but would appreciate for the prawn paste flavour to come out a bit stronger. The assam laksa was also good but was quite sharp and there could be more flaked mackerels (i.e similar to the authentic version) Service was warm and efficient.

Great service, reasonable prices and clean restaurant but the food wasn’t as good as I excepted. Tom yum Kung soup too sour n the lemongrass chopped too small, can’t avoid not to eat it when u drink the soup. Pad Thai noodles wasn’t taste good either. But I do want to go back n try different food next time.

Such wonderful Malaysian cuisine! We took our granddaughter for her birthday lunch, before wandering along the Steveston riverfront. All our meals were excellent. Granddaughter proclaimed the orange chicken as one of the best. Service was very good. The photo is the view of the Fraser River from outside deck.

A nice little family restaurant. The food is good. The special lunch menu has a good variety of choices and reasonable price too. The chicken satay is so good.

Very delicious food and reasonable prices. The lunch menu had a nice variety of rice, curry, and noodle dishes. Sizes were perfect for your mid day meal and werent large enough to stuff you, but left you feeling satisfied and content. The ginger soup that came with the meal was a nice touch and, even though it didn't look like much, packed a lot of flavor!

Good food and service. Server was friendly and patience.

I came here on my birthday, such a wonderful restaurant, friendly and helpful staff. The location is PRIME by the waterfront overlooking the marsh and marina in a quiet area, I ordered mee Goreng and Kari Massaman curry dish both with beef and I am so pleased with the flavor! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everybody I know.

I went here for the first time today for dinner. I've heard great things about this place from others, but I was pretty disappointed with my meal. It was very bland and not tasteful at all (I ordered the tofu in red curry). My mother also felt the same way with her meal (a noodle dish). I had about 2 bites and just couldn't finish the rest.

I’ve been here several times over the years. The food is consistent, curries are pretty good. The Thai options don’t taste especially Thai, maybe more generic Asian. Seems to have gotten significantly more expensive with time but that might just be due to Steveston’s popularity as a tourist destination.

Good service / family run business so can be slow at times <br/>Good food/ not a fan of the Tom yum soup though <br/>Family friendly but the layout is weird <br/>Really hidden in the corner/ won't notice it unless you're looking for it <br/>If i had to choose 1 dish : samba wings <br/>Would I go back ? Yes

It's not as bad as it sounds, especially if you don't mind non-authenticity lol, heard Cantonese-speaking chefs...ah, who knows, maybe there were trained in Malaysia.<br/><br/>Against my judgement, ordered the Tom-yam seafood, the sourness way too powering.<br/><br/>But a good place if you're craving this cuisine in the summer, good views. A bit hard to find from the street as it's in the back corner.

"Terrible service that almost felt like racism (I do not understand, the owners and waitress are Asian too) , mediocre to poor food... Don't waste your time and money here."<br/><br/>My wife and I lived very close to Steveston Village, and one day we just decided to try this restaurant out. We were there at around 6pm and was seated promptly, and that was the end of the good experience. After we sat down, there were a few Caucasian families and couples that came in after us. And we were the only Asian couple sitting in the restaurant of about 6-7 tables. The waitress promptly attended to them and offered them water to drink while also holding short conversations with them. While my wife and I sat there, with no water, one menu and ZERO attention even though we were the first to sit down.<br/><br/>We waited for at least 10 minutes, (and if you were purely waiting for 10 minutes, it feels like a decade) and I finally got impatient, and started to raise my hand to get some attention so that someone could take our order.<br/><br/>Finally someone was looking my way! While the waitress was approaching our direction, I was starting to speak, but she just walked pass us without saying a thing, and started to take the order of ( guess who ) a Caucasian couple sitting behind us. At this point I was pissed off, I had the urge of standing up saying really LOUDLY, "Really?! This place is a JOKE!" and just stormed out of the restaurant with my wife. But obviously my wife stopped me from elevating my emotions in this situation. I mean, if the waitress had just acknowledged me, and said something in the sense of "Sorry, I will be right with you, I saw them call me over first." or whatever I would've been fine with it, even though I was already annoyed by the poor service (no water, no attention, long wait to order). After a few minutes, finally she walked over to us, of her own accord, without me having to raise my hand again, which means she did see me raising my hand the first time (which pissed me off again), and took our order without apologizing for what happened and how rude she was.<br/><br/>Kari-House is suppose to produce South-East Asian ( Singaporean, Malaysian ) cuisine, but the food that came out of the kitchen feels like someone just took a few recipes off of the internet and cooked it the first time. We ordered Laksa, Prawn Noodles and Char Dua Pan (Stir Fried Rich noodles ), all of the dishes had basically no taste to it, they have no idea what they are doing... It was just bland and dull, it almost felt like they withheld the salt too. South-East Asian cuisine uses a lot of spices and herbs in their food, which Kari House seemed to lack.<br/><br/>I lived in Singapore for roughly 5 years about 20 years ago. Loved the food there, ate out almost everyday. The food that they are serving in Kari-House are basically the same street hawker food they have in Singapore, but Kari-House cannot even hold a candle to to the street hawker food's quality and tastiness. If you compare this restaurant (Kari House) to ANY Singaporean street hawker on a scale of 1 to 10, Kari House would be a 4 and Singaporean Street Hawkers would 8-9.<br/><br/>Verdict: Terrible service that almost felt like racism (I do not understand, the owners and waitress are Asian too) , mediocre to poor food... Don't waste your time and money here.

Inauthentic food, exceptionally oily even for Malayasian cuisine. Flavours were lacking from both curries ordered. Quality of the meat was low and skewers were dry. Will definitely not come back. Would rather order Malaysian food from a food court.

Value for money Malaysian Cuisine. Food is average but not the views<br/>I don't remember but the dish that I ordered had too much oil (it was floating on the side). <br/>Cost for 2 would be around $12<br/>Try their veggie options, veggies are better here!

Grayson and I went to Steveston looking for a restaurant our friend recommended but being the directionally challenged people we are, we ended up walking in circles for 15 minutes. By that time we were too hungry to keep looking so we decided to just look for a place to eat. We stumbled upon Kari House which was a Malaysian restaurant that was hiding in a corner by the docks.

Kari House serves up tasty Malaysian food at decent prices in the Steveston area.<br/><br/>The service was kind of slow when we were there. The appetizers took around 15 - 20 minutes to arrive at the table and the entrees took roughly the same amount. <br/><br/>The food came in sizable portions and with the right level of spiciness. For the uninitiated to Malaysian cusine, some dishes are oily due to the sauces used. <br/><br/>The prices are great - each dish sits around $10-$15. What's great is that there are 'upgrade' options. You can choose to add different types of proteins at a little bit extra.<br/><br/>Great experience at Kari House and we will be sure to visit again!

Worst food ever!!!. Lemon chicken small and tasteless. Screwed up our order. Curry lamb was chewey and drowning on oil. Please don't waste your money here!!!!!

Nice and Spicy Foods From Southeast Asia. This is another place that is family run. This is a Chinese Malaysian Family that is cooking all the tasty food. Kari House is know for their curry dishs. I love the Yellow or Red curry dishes. The Chicken Curry is very good here. Just like the Xyclo Vietnamese Restaurant, their curry dish is excellent, but to some people it might be very hot.<br/><br/>People in Southeast Asia and South Asia like spicy food. This is not a fast food place, but their services are good and the food come out fast. This place is near the river, so the view is not bad. It is the only Malaysia Restaurant in the Steveston Fishing Village Area.<br/><br/>It is walking distance from the bus stops in Steveston and Parking is not that good. Their are too many people who like to drive in to Steveston.

Nasty as nasty gets!. I just had dinner at the Kari house. After being served by a 6 year old and watching her little bother wipe down tables. Isnt there a law about this??? After having the little girl bring us a couple glasses half filled with warm tap water that had lip marks on them. We were served the nastiest attempt at malaysian food ive ever had the misfortune of tasting. Not only is this not even close to malaysian it was disgusting. We ordered three separate dishes. The first was so salty we couldnt even eat a bite. The second was a seafood rice dish. The seafood consisted of a handful of those little dried fish you see in the Chinese dollar store that had been fried until rock hard and then thrown on the plate with some old basa...no prawns nor scallops as stated on the menu. My dining companion almost vomited when she attempted to taste what the little grey hard funny smelling chuncks on the plate were. I thought they looked like dried crickets at first. Honestly this place is the poorest excuse for a restaurant Ive ever experienced. Avoid at all costs! You've been warned!

How this place is in Buisness is beyond me....rice was microwaved, fried rice was awful and I didn't even know it was possible to screw that up, the soup was very watered down it hurt to pay the bill

Disappointing. Not authentic.. I was excited when I found out about this place in the Review's "Best of Richmond." I used to travel to Penang every few years with my parents as I have family there, and my favourite thing was the food. So I go online to check out their menu and think to myself, "Hm, this is a tad pricey." But I figure if it's good and they have decent sized portions, it'll be alright.<br/><br/>Well, I ordered my 2 favourite dishes, Char kway teow and Mee goreng, each costing about $11. Indeed their portions are larger than most, each dish could probably feed 2 people with relatively small appetites.<br/><br/>The Char kway teow was extremely bland. It was just flat rice noodles lightly fried with soy sauce and a barely noticeable amount of chilli. But at least it somewhat resembled authentic Char kway teow, which is more than I can say for the Mee goreng.<br/><br/>I honestly can't figure out whether they got my order wrong with the Mee goreng, it was that bad. It's supposed to be thin noodles fried with sweet soy sauce, but what I got was this weird, flat noodles in a soupy sauce. It tasted of disgusting spices that I did not recognize. Had I not payed $11 for this I would have thrown it out.<br/><br/>The only positive thing I can say about Kari House is that if you ask for prawns, you actually get a fair amount of decent sized prawns, not a couple of tiny shrimp. But that's obviously not enough for me to recommend or go back to this place.

Nice Malaysian restaurant.. Definitely a good location with a view and you can sit outside on a nice sunny day like today!<br/><br/>Had Nasi Goreng, kinda spicy fried rice which tasted good and sizable portion.<br/><br/>Singaporean Seafood Laksa, I definitely felt the spicy from the soup which I love the coconut flavoring and the two different kinds of noodles underneath all the seafood!<br/><br/>And for dessert I had a scoop of coconut ice cream which is a nice way to end an awesome meal. Will look forward to my next visit! ^_^

Delicious and a great value. If ambiance and atmosphere take a back seat to quality of cooking, Kari House is for you. We had chicken and beef curry dishes and both were wonderful, tasty and fresh. Kari House cooking is like having your favorite Aunt who's a great cook, invite you over, only she's Malaysian! Super value and family friendly. I highly recommend it.

Not Authentic or Recommended. We went there for dinner with a group of 6 and ordered Hokkien Noodle which is suppose to be dark soya based fried thick noodle, instead we got a spicy hot spaghetti. We also ordered the Beef rendang and in malaysia where we are from, its beef chunks cooked with coconut and spice that is very tender, but we got a soupy curry sauce with small pieces of beef (hardly any) with green peppers and vegetable. The green curry basil fried rice was over spiced and very pungent. The only item that resembled authentic malaysian was the satay which was tasty and edible. There are better places to go, and if you have not tired real Malaysian then go to Penang Delight.

Wonderful. We took my mother here for a very long wonderful dinner. We enjoyed 3 appetizers that we all shared. Then we had two "main" dishes with two kinds of rice AND desert. We loved the small, quaint and quiet environment. We noticed that the restaurant was also doing many 'take-out" orders. The food was very fresh and very flavorful. My mother is quite particular and when I phoned her recently she was expressing her desire to return to this restaurant. Wow. For me, I wish to say that the Satay was the best that I have ever had.

Kari House Restaurant is one of my favorites. The food is fantastic, very authentic, good value and overall really yummy. Ironically my favorite thing isn't on the menu, it is the Ginger soup that comes with the lunch special. It is to die for. Another perk about Kari house is their patio which is a nice touch. it is a family run business, I love their little daughter who sometimes is the hostess. Once when she was really tiny she refused to give my mom a menu. Such a cute moment :) One suggestion I have is to go with a group and share multiple entrees. That way everyone gets a taste of everything but you don't get overstuffed. (large portions) I highly recommend going to Kari House!

Great hidden gem, authentic Malaysian food!. It's a small little restaurant hidden right at the heart of Steveston village. <br/><br/>They have a large selection, and with many of the famous Malaysian dishes. <br/><br/>I loved their fried tofu, and the super crispy roti canai (which is the closest to the ones from Malaysia from all the other ones that I have tried so far!).<br/><br/>I don't really eat too spicy... but I actually did finish their Laksa noodles all by myself. The price is alright too, for the great taste!<br/><br/>Only thing is, I hope they open in the afternoon, and have longer evenings. They close by 8:30pm......

Solid choice for Asian food in Steveston. The portions are large, moderate in price and tasty. There are some specialties they do very well like the curries, roti canai bread, sauces, chicken skewers, and vegetarian noodle dishes.<br/><br/>It's not a fancy place, mostly decorated with Ikea furniture, but it's quaint and cozy as well. In the summer you can eat outside on the deck in front of the river.<br/><br/>I've frequented this place about a dozen times a year since it opened and it's always satisfied me. The service is friendly and it's clean.

Nice family owned restaurant. This restaurant may be hard to find but it offers a wide variety of menu items that are flavourful and filling.

This sweet little Ma&Pa shop has a really decent waterfront view without the hefty waterfront-restaurant-pricetag.  It's perfect for a cute little casual date or family lunch.  The storefront is a bit hidden, so unless you know it's there or you've been reccommended it, it's invisible.
Every Day Is A Food Day
They don’t open on Mondays, and only for a few hours for lunch and dinner the other days. It’s family operated, and during a Friday lunch hour, it was almost fully occupied. Although they are famous for their good valued lunches, we opted to go with the normal dinner menu since we could share the larger portions. Spring Rolls (4 rolls) - Deep fried vegetarian spring rolls with plum sauce First up, we got the Spring Rolls , which were vegetarian. I didn’t find these that tasty. There was too much wrapping paper so when it was folded over and over again, it became really thick. Only the outside was fried crispy, but the inside layers were soft. Roti Canai (2 pieces) - Malaysian flaky bread with curry sauce Whenever I think of Malaysian food, I think

Kari House is a restaurant located in Steveston that serves Malaysian food. This was our first time in this part of Richmond and I have to say that I love the ambiance of the area, especially because it is right by the water. Since the restaurant is also located oceanside, we opted to be seated outside in the sun as opposed to the more dimly light indoors. We first went with two orders of Roti Canai  ($2.95 each) to start. This is definitely one of those dishes that I have to order if its available. The flatbread was soft and flaky with a nice chew to them and went deliciously well with the curry sauce. My boyfriend ordered the Kari Rendang  with chicken ($12.95), which is a curry consisting of coconut milk, onions, bell peppers and potatoes. Although this dish did have a slight spiciness to it, the curry was a little bit lacking in flavour. I also thought that the chicken was a little dry but my boyfriend seemed to enjoy his dish more than I did. For myself, I had the Tom-Yam Seafood

There’s a ton of places to find fish and chips in Steveston but what do you do if you have a hankering for something a little different  What about Malaysian food on the pier  Fortunately, the one Malaysian restaurant in Steveston happens to be right on the pier (albeit a bit hidden) located near the Hog Shack.
