Review Shanghai Wonderful Restaurant - Richmond

I visit this restaurant whenever I visit Vancouver. The food is good. Even the Cantonese dishes. The Sweet and Sour pork is up to good standard. Crispy outside and juicy inside. I am showing you two of my most favorite dishes there that you should try. The Chinese radish cake (蘿蔔絲酥餅) and the dessert, donut with red bean paste inside ( 高力豆沙). They are so good. I am looking forward to visit Vancouver again in this summer.

Our family’s go to restaurant for years. Consistently good food. Finally made back here for dine-in service after a long pandemic. Service is fast and very friendly. Food is so much better when it comes straight from the kitchen to your table. Compared to takeout; where by the time you get it home … food is lukewarm. XLB have a lot of juice and very flavourful and is a must try. We ordered the 3 course Peking Duck. Menu says 2 course but you can order it with the soup for an extra $13. The Peking Duck came with 12 pastry wraps. All three courses were very good. Our favourite dish here is the Dry Ginger Beef. Deep fried strips of ginger beef coated with a sweet spicy sauce.

One of favorite Shanghai cuisine restaurant in Vancouver. All dishes never disappoint us each time we come here. Kids loves Shanghai steam bun, meat stired with sticky rice , meanwhile beef and bean curve soup . Very suitable for family and friends gathering. Try here if you love to taste Shanghai cuisine .

Location is good if you are staying in the hotels nearby. There are not much restaurants around if you do not drive. There are a good variety to choose from and they are all nicely made. Portion is decent but not big for the price. If you want value for money, they are not as good as other Chinese restaurants around Central Richmond.

My first time since they moved from Cooney Road. Overall food quality has been degraded. Xiaolung Bao was ok, the smoked fish: should have used Pomfret rather than using the cheapy tasteless white fish. The back vinegar sweet n sour ribs- size of the ribs was cut too small thus making it dry, taste was ok. The taro duck was not done right - using the batter to deep fry was not authentic, and the taro was too mushy. Servers were attentive. 3 applies and 2 main dishes cost us $90+ . Not recommended, I will go back to Dynasty and Shanghai River for some more Shanghainese dishes

💵 Price: $30 - $40 pp 🤤Taste: Overall 3.8 / 5 || XLB 4 / 5 🕯Atmosphere: 3 / 5 🪑Seating: 3.7 / 5 📈 Price Performance ratio: 3.5 / 5 Retention Rate: 🤔 ℙ𝕣𝕠𝕤: 🥡 quick service 🥡 soup dumpings - similar to Wang’s Shanghai cuisine. It has a thin skin and was loaded with soup. 🥡 Everything was flavorful ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕤: 🥡 food was a bit too salty (even a canto say so) 🥡 closes at 8:30 pm 🥡 kinda pricy

Authentic Chinese Food with huge portions. Had dinner with 5 family members but portions could have fed 10 of us. Every dish is cooked upon order. Ordered tofu with seafood, pork knuckles with vegetables, special fried noodles, xo fried rice and tomato soup with salted vegetables. On hindsight, should have ordered only one less dish. Worth a visit if you want good Chinese food near Holiday Inn Express Hotel.

This is the place where we always go for shanghai dim sum. Turnip cakes, sticky rice roll and soya milk are the must try items. Although the XLB is not the best in town but it's worth to try too. Went there many times and food quality is consistent. Good service and the waitresses are very attentive. It would be better if the manager can improve his communication skills.

Authentic Shanghai! Dumplings were amazing, far better than any I've had in town (and I've tried plenty). Every dish was excellent and the service was great. A hidden gem that we've driven past many times - highly recommend!

Service is hit and miss but the food is worth it. Turnip cakes are my favourite. The blue menus have more options for more adventurous eaters.

Food good, employees nice, services weren't very good. Always had to call or chase someone down. Food was amazing. This review is more for the restaurant staff, maybe services will become better.

The food are pretty amazing, SO YUMMY! Nothing I don't like, can you imagine?! Way to go! :)

the food is amazingly good. You ought to eat here!

This is a really great place near YVR if you‘re craving some Shanghainese food. The service is a bit lousy and it’s a bit loud because of the small space, but the food is really really well done and decently priced for their portions.
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
Shanghai Wonderful is in the Best Western Abercorn in Richmond. It's a comfortable room and six of us sat at a table with a big lazy susan which is great as long as you spin it slowly. Hot and Sour Soup was a good way to start on this rainy ugly day. It was thick with mushrooms and noodles and just sour enough to qualify for the name. Very nice! The main event was next and we all agreed that the soup dumplings were very good! The skin was just thick enough to hold together and the soup was tasty. Inside the little pork nugget provided a nice finish to the experience. Later we had another round but the version with crab. I believe the crab is only in the actual soup with the same pork nugget. We tried a few other items such as Green Onion Pancakes which were crisp on the outside but tasty and chewy inside. The Beef Roll was also enjoyable. Some cucumber added a pleasant crunch and there was just enough Hoisin inside to add a bit of sweetness. The Chinese Donut was less of a hit and the only thing that we didn't actually finish. I assume this is a Shanghaiese version and were more doughy than what I am used to (usually a little closer to a Mexican churro. Am I wrong?) We had a true vegetarian in our midst and so ordered a Vegetable Chow Mein. The vegetables themselves were nicely just cooked but overall the dish was a little bit meh. Still it was nice to see some green. We tried Sticky Rice Shao Mai. I have never had anything quite like this. The rice was rich with mushrooms and meaty flavour. These went quickly! Finally to my delight, we ordered Shen Jiang Bao. I recently discovered the existence of these tasty variations on Xiao Long Bao from Dennis The Foodie. They are the pan fried slightly leavened dough version of a soup dumpling with the same soup and pork meatball inside! These were great although to be honest, since I have never had them before, I have no benchmark. The soup was very hot inside so care was needed! I am not even sure what they are called on the English menu as someone else ordered them and they just appeared as if by magic! We don't order dessert very often but I am glad we did this time. We had Sesame Balls in Rice Wine Soup! The interior of these balls was a tasty sesame paste and they were floating in a light, not too sweet, citrusy syrup. The best part of any meal is the company and conversation but I think we all enjoyed the food as well. Service was very good and food came out of the kitchen in a timely manner. Everything was great! The dim sum menu is a little different at this Shanghaiese restaurant than what we usually have but that just means more to explore!

The food was delicious and as a tourist I went there twice yesterday. The first time I dined at the restaurant and was served well. However, the second time I ordered to take away one bowel of sesame glutinous rice ball at around 8:23pm . I had an unpleasant experience. The female receptionist took the order with an contemptuous attitude and a cool face . Just like the money I spent was less and no tips could be obtained. Besides the delicacy is important, the service is also essential for the reputation of a restaurant. This young lady should be trained again and didn't look down upon anyone.
For our Sunday brunch, we decided to try out Shanghai Wonderful’s ‘new’ location across the street from the Richmond Costco. It’s not really that new, it’s just that we haven’t visited since they moved out of their former location by Landsdowne mall. We got there by 11:30am, and luckily there were still a couple of tables available so we didn’t have to wait for our table for four.

It’s my second time visiting the Shanghai Wonderful Restaurant (旺上海菜) in Richmond, located right across Costco. My first time there was for my friend’s “post-wedding treats”, recommended by the groom’s grandpa. We thought the food was good so we revisited the restaurant again for our long overdue family luncheon.

First time in this restaurant. The food was good. The food was warm and just spicy enough. Didn't know what to pick so I tried the fried shanghai noodles with chicken.

First time here since they relocated. Felt food isn't the same anymore but it does the job. XLB's are not as juicy as they used to be and their pan fried dumplings were dry. Service wasn't great either..besides bringing food to our table that was pretty much it. We had hot and sour soup and they didn't even bother portioning it out for us. Not one of my first picks for Shanghai food next time around...

We bought the special 6 people feast from dealuse for a birthday celebration. food tasted a little above average. We were well attended by our friend who was working there.
But it all went downhill until the end, we did not call for the bill but another server made our friend sent it to our table saying we asked for it. We immediately felt like we were being pushed to leave.
Went to the front to pay for GST and the bill (we ordered some drinks). I misread the bill and gave $5 less than the 10% tip margin. The cashier first asked me pay in cash with this frown on her face. Then I told her I don't have cash and her attitude became worse.
She then confronted me saying "did you not know how to read the bill? You had to pay $15 for gst and drinks, plus tips." That's when I realized I misread the bill but I was greatly offended by her attitude. Even then I still decided to give them their 10% at least.
As if that was not enough, the lady shook her head when she thought I wasn't looking. Then passed me my receipt without looking at me or saying a word. I did not want to make a fuss but I have to say that was the worst customer service I have ever seen at any restaurant for the past 15 years.
Last time I recall, tips are EARNED by superior customer service, if you want 15% or 20%, provide the service that deserves this amount. We will not be coming back for any event, coupon or not.

On a cold December Sunday, the extended family met for dinner at the new Shanghai Wonderful location, in the Best Western Abercorn Inn on Bridgeport road in Richmond. The restaurant was previously located in a strip mall onn Lansdowne and Cooney Road, but closed several years ago when the strip mall was sold and redeveloped.

I have not visited until now. I had an errand in the area, so me and my family dropped by for brunch. My experience for this particular visit is not the best. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon at around 1:15pm, and ordered the usual by 1:20. Now, usually within 15-20 minutes, some orders are served (like the simple wraps or ready made food); however that was not the case for us. We ordered 4 items which includes the must have Shanghai dumplings (Xiaolongbao), a beef wrap, the Shanghai buns (Sangjibao) with soup inside and this other dish which I'm not sure what it's called, but it consisted of rice crackers and a savoury broth that you pour on top. So, 20 minutes in, we were getting really hungry, our tea was cold and no food was in sight. The restaurant wasn't super busy (60% full) and there weren't many servers there either....

After their relocation from the lansdowne region, I have not visited until now.

20 minutes in, we were getting really hungry, our tea was cold and no food was in sight. The restaurant wasn't super busy (60% full) and there weren't many servers there either. So, it did took us a while to get the attention of a server to inquire about our food. That person never came back with an apology or response explaining the delay. Around 15 minutes later, the rice cracker with broth was served and we ate it super fast.

For the dishes, the rice crackers was very crunchy and the broth was super savory but it felt a bit too rich (or possibly too much MSG) that my throat was hurting a bit after the second bowl. The beef wraps came ,after they took away the Shanghai Dumplings, was okay, not the best I've had though. It was on the oily side with rather salty beef. I think I would prefer a bit more cucumbers to balance out the strong marinated beef.

the Shanghai Dumplings, they were served piping hot and were pretty good, but they are not SO good that I'd drive out of central Richmond to eat. The skin is not as paper thin as other places I've been nor is the soup so abundant and savory to my standards to deem as "must eat".

Finally the Shanghai Buns were last. They were super hot, so be careful if you plan on eating these. They were okay. I think they can be crispier on the bottom, but overall, this was an average dish.
Picky Diner
Overall the food quality at Shanghai Wonderful Restaurant is pretty solid. Their Xiaolongbao is tasty although not super amazing. when the sum dim style lunch is more suitable for a smaller party, the dinner experience will be much better if you come with a bigger party (at least 6 people), which are the typical deals for the Shanghainese restaurants in the city.

I’ve never appreciated statutory holidays as much as I do now. Once you start the 9-5 life, you realize that holidays are few and far between. On Canada Day, I met up with R and H and their adorable baby boy. We went to my favourite Shanghai restaurant and in their usual style, we ordered so many things.

This is my favourite Shanghai restaurant in all of Vancouver. When they closed their first location, I was heart broken. I was so happy when I found out they had reopened.

I love the XLB here, and it is my No.1 pick for Shanghai food. I recommend this restaurant to everyone because I just love it that much!

My family comes here at least 4 times a month and we always order the same things: XLB, Shredded Chicken Noodle, Fried Shanghai Noodles, Pork Chop Noodle, Seafood Hot and Sour Soup, and their pan fried pork soup dumplings.

Unhygienic and slow. Unfortunately the service was terrible. Tables that arrived after us seemed to get their food first. We felt sorry for some tables who appeared to be waiting a very long time. To top it off, one of our party witnessed two instances where an employee used the washroom but did not wash his hands afterward. This turned out to be a very disappointing dinner out. Plan to go elsewhere.

Disgusting food. Paid $600 for 10-person dinner but given food court quality (or worse!!) food.
Dishes heavily marinated with no fresh vegetables/seafood. Huge ripoff. Never going back. Avoid Avoid!! There are so many better places in Richmond/Vancouver for fresh food for the same price!
Goodafooda
The only thing good about this place are the juicy buns..and even those arent good as others the wrapping is hard. First of all location wasnt great..it was at a hotel bottom floor ..inside looked like it was once a banquet room. We ordered chicken and corn soup, beef and broccoli, steamed and fried shanghai buns. The soup was thick, beef was tough, OVERALL NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE

New Year, so let's try a new restaurant! Bad idea. We thought we got "lucky" when we called and asked for a table of 10 for Chinese New Year dinner. Now we understand why this was the only restaurant that wasn't booked last minute.
Horrible experience! Only rated 1.0 because it won't allow me to rate it a 0 that it truly deserves.
I don't even want to waste my time writing a review so short and to the point it is.
Service was terrible! Asked for tea refill at least 10 times. Our food took at least 40 minutes each plate to come out!!!! They didn't even bring us plain rice that we ordered until the side dishes were cold. We ordered the 2 course Peking duck and they didn't even bring us enough wraps for the dish! When we asked they told us we would be charged an additional $6.30 for extra wraps! That's pathetic! They are charging us for something we already paid for in the first place that they didn't provide us properly! The servers were rude and looked annoyed when we asked about the menu! We didn't even get 2 of our dishes we ordered and had to ask twice about it and in the end we ended up just leaving without eating anything but the only 4 dishes that came. The other tables around us were also complaining. We had a table of 10 and not one of us will ever return. Ridiculous customer service. The dishes we actually got were extremely salty and sloppy. Restaurant location was stupid. Parking lot was nothing but a mud pitt. 👎

We finally tried this place after it reopened! The food was good, but it was not amazingly good like we remembered. The XLB were tasty, big and juicy and the pan fried dumplings were also great. However we found the overall taste too salty for our palettes. We also ordered the crab, scallops and egg white on broccoli with salty egg - the "salty egg" taste was great, but after a while it was too overbearing. I would recommend this place, but in my opinion, I much prefer the XLB and food at Lin's.

Comfortable and clean restaurant (probably because it's relatively new). Service was better than the usual Chinese standard. Good portions and priced reasonably. Wine chicken was good but I've had better. XLB was tasty and didn't fall apart. XO fried rice was bland, I wouldn't order that again.
PickyKasumi
3 of us went there for lunch today.
We had ordered: sweet and sour cod fish ( batter are too thick/ no pine nut / put too much green beans and chopped carrots instead of shrimp); deep fried bun (omg so hard inside/ not soft inside); sliced lamb cold dish ( its tasteless / dont taste like lamb to me); chinese donut (not crispy outside / soft and cold) ; streamed shanghai dumpling (not good as old place/ soup inside are too salty); soy milk is tasteless / not smooth); so disappointed.. we all though they changed the chef there.. better service / cheap price , not expensive ar all/ won't go there again because of their food quality.

For Thanksgiving dinner this year, instead of having turkey, we had Shanghainese food!! Which is totally fine...because what sane person would turn down XLB and fatty pork?! ;). I vividly remember my dad chose Denny's for our thanksgiving meal last year because he wanted turkey (bonus points if you remember that blog post!) I took advantage of the fact that it was a holiday and ordered their cherry pork heheh. And to my surprise, my dad didn't even complain that it was $19! (Don't you just love holidays?)

We did manage to finish most of the food, in the end we only packed up 2 shen jian baos! My dad was quite impressed with the food, he was like "This place is way better than Dinesty, you can tell they actually put thought into their food." I have to agree. Dinesty feels and *tastes* more massed produced (being a chain and all) but I still like them! My dad on the other hand, isn't a fan ;D

The servers were really nice!! When I told them about my allergies, they were friendly and assured me that they would omit the ingredients I'm allergic to!
Pandango85
Do they just close and open when they feel like it? Their hours were clearly posted on the doors, online it said they were open, and the front door was unlocked. Walked in, they weren't friendly, looked at us and said they were closed. Be open when you say you're open. It's business.

Reception's concept of 15min wait is actually 45min wait!!. The reception is a total liar. Shw told me the wait will only be 15min. I waited 45min, which is enough time for an entire dinner. That means, every customer probably just get seated when I ask her how long will the wait be.

I quite like unassuming Shanghai-style cafes that can pump out anything from 10 pages of menu and make it taste delicious and Shanghai Wonderful is one of the better ones. Next time I’ll bring even more people so we can order even more food. Groan.
Not as Wonderful. It looks like they've updated their menu and raised the prices. Was only 15% full on a Friday night, 8:30 pm. Food was mediocre. Clearly not what it used to be.
Pork_ninjas
Yummy authentic eats. Came here for dinner and ordered a set menu with Peking duck, done 3 ways : duck broth, on crepe and lettuce wrap. The set menu came with various other delicious items all were heaping plates. I would definitely come back to try the lunch menu

Shanghai NOT Wonderful. I've spent 20yrs of of my adult life trying to find the best XLB in the lower mainland... something that is even close to what i remembered in my childhood growing up on Shanghai. This was one of the biggest disappointment for xiao long bao yet. Agreed, it was extremely soupy but the meat filing tasted weird. It was hard like a Vietnamese beef ball, I had a hard time swallowing... Don't get fooled by the name of the restaurant.

Shanghai Food at best. Tried this place twice and both were delicious with descent enough service( they actually offer to change the plates for you). Juicy Pork bun is really good, perfectly molded with a thin wrap. Peking duck was delicious except for the fact that they should be generous on the green onions. My friends like the deep fried fish(with seaweed powder??). I on the other hand thought it was too deep fried with greasiness.
Travellifego
Food overloaded with MSG, my sister didn't feel well and threw up 4 times last night, too bad I used to like their XLB, but I will avoid this place until their tastebuds are getting back to normal.

Tasty. The dim sum was very tasty.

If its busy parking will be an issue.

Quality. Some of the highest quality chinese food ive had, the honey beef is a must, its served up with these dumpling type things and u can dip them in the honey sauce mmmmmmm. also some of the best service i have ever received in a restaurant, seemed as if 4 or so servers were assigned to our table, worth the drive and a must if u live in richmond

Dumplingssssssss. Soupy dumplings are so amazingly good. I can't get enough of them. This place is always busy and bustling. I like the buzz in there. Cool how you get to watch the dude make the dumplings right in the restaurant. Most things on the menu I've tried have been pretty good.

The xiao long bao were really good with nice thin wrappers and tasty soup inside. The texture of the pork filling was just right as well. Also has stir fried pea tips which were cooked just right though slightly too oily

We can’t go to a Shanghainese restaurant and not have some XLB or Xiao Long Boa as they are called. On the menu they were called Shanghai Style Juicy Pork Buns and they are juicy. Just as I expect they explode in your mouth. Awesome.

One of our favorite places to have great Asian cuisine. You know when you want to try new places and new things but you just want to have something from somewhere where you KNOW you are going to love it? This is one of those places for us. Here’s some of our favorite dishes…
MISS VANCOUVER PIGGY
How did every dish come out within 5 minutes? Aside from the lightening speed food, the service is pretty good and attentive (we were seated where the waitresses stand if that makes a difference). The food is not bad and the only complaint would be, why were the panfried buns so greasy? Shanghai Wonderful is cleaner than Top Shanghai Cuisine and you may or may not get better service, but I think I might still prefer TSC because the buns kind of threw me off.

Their chicken with wine is on par with that of Long’s Noodle House, although both are quite distinct from one another.

The former is firm and cold while the latter is soft and a bit warm.

The conclusion is – tastes good

I love Shanghai food. There aren’t many good restaurants in town, but Shanghai Wonderful is definitely one of them. I have been here many times over the past few years and it has been consistently serving good food; a very solid restaurant. I like Shanghai Wonderful because of the flavourful yum-tum food with plenty of quality ingredients. In terms of service, all the Shanghai restaurants are equivalent. For those who never been to a Chinese restaurant, please keep in mind that the only positive in these restaurants are efficiency. Unless you are a regular, no conversations will be generated; simply because the waiters have no time to spare for a decent conversation. My review on most Chinese restaurants is solely dependent on how well the food taste. Chicken with Wine Sauce 花雕走地雞 ($10.95) This free range chicken is soaked in rice wine sauce. The flavour of the rice wine is actually quite strong. My sister didn’t really like it because it was too rich for her. I would not recommend thi

Shanghai Wonderful continues to serve solid dishes at reasonable prices. Although the décor is not fancy, the restaurant is clean and there’s a big window for which you can watch various dumplings and buns being hand-made in front of your eyes. Unfortunately, it’s cash or debit only – we always seem to forget this, as we feel it’s a great dinner destination for bringing guests.
JsLeigh14
Shanghai Wonderful Restaurant gave us a lot of bang for our buck. For less than $20 per head, this was an affordable and delicious place to have Chinese dinner. It’s not the most luxurious and fancy Chinese restaurant there is, but I felt that we got more than what we paid for. Especially after hearing my mom complain about how expensive Chinese food in Alberta can be, I think I wouldn’t mind coming back to this restaurant again.

I enjoyed my mushu pork wrap very much. Mushu pork primarily consists of shredded pork, scrambled eggs, with sliced wood ear mushrooms. It’s tasty with the sauce. We had some leftover so I brought it to mix with my rice for lunch, but it was bland- sauce is needed!
Two Hungry Piglets
Po pokes a whole into the top and the soup squirts right up his nose! That's a lethal pan fried bun! Just goes to show how soupy these buns are. Not too doughy with a good bun to filling ratio and a nice crispy bottom from the frying. Delish!

A positive point I must mention is the service they provided was efficient and productive. But then again, the restaurant was quite empty and they were high on staff.

First and most important thing to order was the xiao long bao (小籠包). Some people would say that Shanghai Wonderful has one of the best xiao long bao in the Lower Mainland, but I was actually quite disappointed because the broth was way to salty . I couldn't taste any other flavours. I don't even have any other comments on it because it was so bad, I didn't notice anything else. There was a reasonable amount of broth though. Still, I'll definitely have to satisfy my xlb craving again sometime soon with another Shanghai dim sum meal. I

The skin was thicker than I preferred but the soup and filling had a distinctive pork flavour to it (unlike the ones at Dinesty that were pretty tasteless). The vinegar dipping sauce didn't have much of a vinegar taste to it… it tasted more like soy sauce and it barely had any ginger in it.
Krispybites
It has been a while since my last visit to Shanghai Wonderful, but I decided to go for dim sum because of this dessert coupon from groupforsave.com . The coupon is valid until the end of October and offers one complimentary dessert per table. Unfortunately the deal site is written completely in Chinese, so if you can't read it, you'll need to grab a Chinese-literate friend to help you out. No Shanghainese meal is complete without xiao long bao, so it was the first thing we ordered. It was listed in the menu as Shanghai style juicy pork buns (ä¸Šæµ·å°ç± åŒ…) ($5.25), and the buns were indeed very juicy. There was a lot of soup inside and the flavour was intense compared to Shanghai River 's milder version. This is one item that Shanghai Wonderful does quite well. The smoked fish noodle soup (熏é-šéºµ) ($6.50) was just average. The soup was dark in colour but the flavour wasn't there. The smoked fish was also rather bland because the sauce had not soaked in. I've

The consensus was SW's dumplings were lackluster, not bad, but lacking flavour and texture from the rest. We tried a crab XLB and agreed it was an odd choice and inferior to pork. It was nothing special in general and a bit of a disappointment.
Gracecheung604
Although I've been to Shanghai Wonderful many times for lunch, this was my first visit for dinner. Their lunchtime service features lots of Shanghainese dim sum dishes but dinner is a whole different ball game.
Gracecheung604
I have been to Shanghai Wonderful at least a dozen times but every time I go, I'm so famished that I never remember to take pictures for a post. Well, this time, I finally did! As always, we got their Salty Sticky Rice, which is a sushi type roll with preserved mustard greens for crunch, a deep fried Chinese doughnut runs through the entire length of the roll, with loads of dried pork floss sprinkled in between. It's a bit salty, a bit doughy yet peaks of flavour come from the preserved greens. They might look harmless, but limit yourself to just one. Have more than that and you'll be too full to try anything else! Pack extras to go, they are great at room temperature for a snack later. I was also in the mood of a bowl of noodles and we got the Szechuan Beef Noodle, and yes, it's a bit spicy. See the chilies there? The beef was super tender and juicy, the noodles were just a touch past al dente, but still pretty good. I like the abundance of veggies and the piping hot broth. This split

I’ve been to Shanghai Wonderful a couple of times but oddly enough for dinner only. And the times I’ve been there for dinner, we’d usually order the large plates. This was an opportunity to try their signature lunch items.

(旺) , otherwise known as 大鴻運 was a hole in the wall that used to be on No 3 Road across from Richmond Center. It was ridiculously busy back then and their success allowed them to move to a bigger location. There's something about the previous location that Shanghai Wonderful used to occupy, as it has proved to be quite successful for consequent restaurants that have come along. My mom had taken my sister and I to the old location, and so for my sisters birthday this year, we met up at Shanghai Wonderful for an early dinner. To start off, we had 西湖牛肉羹. Just a basic starchy soup of beef and egg. Mmmm 苔條魚 (Fish fried in seaweed batter). The seaweed in the batter gives it some natural salt, negating the use of any dipping sauces or seasoning. Mixed stirfry vegetables. Typical, standard. Whaaaaaat is this?!?! It was such a rich red/pink colour that my sister and I were both "wtf". The sauce itself tasted like th
