Review Red Star Restaurant - Richmond

Michelle Y
Came here for dinner and everything was just mediocre. I had huge expectations since I'm from the states and I was always told Richmond has good Chinese food. Service was a little slow. Peking duck was dry and the abalone had too much garlic smeared on top. The beef was super chewy so if you're going to order that you should ask for a knife ahead of time.

Came here for Dim Sum and it was pretty expensive for food that really isn't that good. The dishes weren't very flavorful, and our congee wasn't hot. Service wasn't great and we were pretty much ignored the time we were there. Every other restaurant we've been to for dim sum, they ask what kind of tea you want as soon as you are seated. at least with us, we had to ask someone for tea. By the way, the entrance to the parking is well hidden if you've never park there before (it's in the back of the building, by Yaohan Center). I gave up and just park next door.

It has space to hold large parties which is a benefit for most Asian families. However the food is a bit on the subpar side. Fish dishes didn't seem as fresh as they could be considering they had their own live fish tanks. Food with beef and chicken are pretty good, but not amazing. Some things also tasted a bit under seasoned but that may not necessarily be bad for some diets. Staff is friendly and accommodating.

One of the few restaurants I would go to for Hong Kong Cantonese type dishes. The food quality, flavor and portion have been very consistent and never disappoint through the many times I visited. Price is comparable to the many restaurants in the area so nothing to complain. Best part is you don't have to fight for parking since it pretty much has an entire parkade to itself, not like other strip malls in Richmond where 3-5 restaurants had to share 20 spots.

Great dim sim spot. All my favorites here including shrimp dumplings, beef tribes and intestines, sticky rice in lotus leaf, and their egg tarts are the best. To get there second floor indoor parking is the way to go where you can park up to two hours and you walk through a corridor to convenient walk right to the restaurant.

Over priced, low quality. Sweet and sour pork is frozen food level. Peking duck is not crispy - not freshly made

Excellent dim sum with indoor parking. Excellent, excellent, excellent service. Changes your plate, fill up your teapots and very proactive. Tasty food, good ambiance and centrally located. Also right now, there is 15% discount for lunch, simply amazing.

Good seafood restaurant in Richmond. A little bit pricey but seafood tastes good, especially their lobsters and shark fin soup.

I find dim sum in Vancouver is way better than in Hong Kong, which is quite the opposite you would expect.  I have heard people say, dim sum in Vancouver in only better because low quality food ingredient in almost non-existent in Canada with all the regulations.  Those people say food in Hong Kong should taste better as the chefs in Hong Kong has better skill.  I find that not true at all.  I truly and sincerely feel that not only the quality of the ingredient is higher, but also the chefs skill in Vancouver is better.  At least for most of the dim sum places in Vancouver and Richmond.  Not very sure about Burnaby or anything east to that.  I have heard some bad comments about dim sum over to the east side.

Red Star Seafood Restaurant 鴻星海鮮酒家 has two locations. This one is located in President Plaza across from Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. <br/><br/>This place used to be good, but the food and service have gone downhill. <br/><br/>We ordered a King Crab set dinner for a party of 10, and we also ordered additional dishes.  We have to say it was pretty disappointing.  A big disappointment was the House Chicken with Brown Bean Paste.  The chicken was not tender, and it was real dry as cardboard.<br/><br/>Food: 🍽🍽🍽Can Try! <br/>Service: 👩‍🍳👩‍🍳👩‍🍳<br/>Price: 💲💲💲$50-$100 for two (dinner)<br/>Presentation: 📷📷<br/>Parking: 🚗🚗🚗🚗🚗<br/>Would I Return: Maybe 🤔<br/>Explore the menu: King Crab Set Dinner for 10 people, Golden Shrimps with Salted Egg Yolk and Rice Cakes<br/>Tips:<br/>📝 makes a reservation <br/>📝 can cater to large party

April, 2018<br/><br/>Went there for lunch with cousins. We sat inside the room.. lack of server in that room.. took them forever to give us tea and food. All the dinnerware are dirty... table cloth all have holes on...<br/>Extremely thirsty afterwards<br/>

Nice & Quiet<br/>An early Sunday lunch -  a table for 2<br/><br/>For having a Dim-Sum lunch, this restaurant is one of the least 'noisy' one located at Richmond.  They have very high ceiling.  I like the environment.<br/><br/>We ordered a few dim sum dishes - Steamed Beef Meat Balls w. Bean Curd Skin; Steamed Pork Dumplings; Steamed Matsutake Mixed Mushroom Dumplings; Steamed Sticky Rice Wraps; Steamed Rice Rolls w. Prawns & Chives; and Bean Curd Wrap w. Minced Shrimp.<br/><br/>Everything was nice & hot.  Service was ok.<br/><br/>A good choice if you like traditional dim sums.

It was Father’s Day, I told my dad to pick the place and I would take him and my mother out for lunch. Not surprisingly he choose dim sum. My parents know what they like and typically keep within those bounds. I was however delighted that they look this blog into account and choose a Chinese restaurant I have yet to visit. My father has been here once before and remembered it fondly, enough to want to return again.

We went to Red Star on a Saturday afternoon for some dimsum. Much like all the other dimsum places, Red Star has the basics. We ordered the prawn wrapped in rice flour, Chinese donut wrapped in rice flour, sticky rice and eggplant. Overall the food was okay, nothing outstanding.<br/><br/>The service was good since the restaurant was pretty dead, and the price is standard.

We were yelled for no reason.we went there with a groupon and being treated as a cheap cousin. We sit down for 10minutes, and all the sudden there was a waiter came to us and yell "if you don't tell us the number of your groupon code ,you will be sitting here forever and never get your food " . We answered"we told the reception when we came in and she just guided us to this table ,no one asked is anything about the code." Then the rude waiter said " show me your groupon" we showed him but he yelled again" read it out "<br/>What the hell is wrong with you really? Did we do anything wrong .feel so insulted

Unprofessional Service!!!. I went to Red Star on Cambie for dim sum today for 2 people. The bill came out to $44 and we paid $50. The lady came back with change and we said keep the change. The lady said, "Not Enough tip". Really?!?! How can they be so rude. We will not be going back.

Extreme terrible service from Alvin. My husband and I went dinner last month. We are loyal customers have been visiting over 5 years. We were sitting on table 14 next to entrance of kitchen. Alvin walked by and bump into my back twice. My hubby told Alvin to be careful, but he was so rude and meant. He speaks Chinese to coworker to tease us, thinking we don't speak Chinese. The foods were excellent and manager were nice except Alvin. I have been for dim sum for few times and seeing Alvin wasn't nice to other customers as well. Alvin ' s terrible service stops me coming back.

Better than a lot of other Chinese restaurants. I often go to this place for dim sum whenever I go to Richmond. Both food and service are great and even better than most of other restaurants. It has never disappointed me so far.

Unbelievable. This place has gone downhill past the point of no return.<br/><br/>The food and service used to be quite good. The last couple times, the food has become very mediocre. We went as a family and ordered a full meal with 6 entrées, none of which to write home about. <br/><br/>The service was deplorable. They kept rushing us even though there was plenty of space. Near the end of our meal, a manager said aloud to our server in Mandarin thinking we couldn't hear or understand, "what the hell? are they still not finished? (干嘛! 還沒吃完?)" which we heard and fully understood. The server noticed and was quite embarrassed about her manager. <br/><br/>We won't be going back and recommend others to stay away from this god-forsaken place. There are better one-$ places.

King Crab. We went to this restaurant to feast on the king crab which was in season. We were not disappointed, if fact we found the food and service incredible. The server was most helpful in advising us on how much to order and very accommodating in providing the crab cooked various ways. The deep fried variety and curried crab in the carapace for the third course was devine. We highly reccommend Red Star to anyone who loves Chinese food done well and served quickly and efficiently. Yummy!

Amazing food, Amazing service!. We visited Red Star las Sunday, it was our first time and we're pleasantly surprised with the top notch authentic Chinese cousine and excellent service! Assistant manager - Kelvin Leung made us feel very comfortable, like we were old friends who know each other many years. If you would like to get an amazing Authentic Chinese Food and amazing 5 Star***** service you will be thrilled with Red Star. Thank you very much, we'll be back! Sergey and Family

Mediore Dimsum. I am not sure how they do for dinner, but the dimsum was mediore. Shirmp dumpling was reheated and the filling is broken apart. With the above average price and average quality dim sum, I definitely would not return for dimsum again.

Disspointing. This place was just too overstaffed, the food was mediore. I came for dimsum on a Sunday and was rather disappointing! Good thing we had the 25% off deal if you order and leave before 11:30am.

That was a new location! when I first come here it has two floor than in Marpole because it only has ONE floor but it's bigger than the new location. but it's quite big.
Picky Diner
Red Star Seafood had been one of the most established Chinese fine dining restaurants in Vancouver with 2 locations in Vancouver Marple area, and central Richmond. I had always wondered if they were affiliated with Superstar Restaurant Group in Hong Kong. They had shared the same restaurant name in Chinese and their logos looked very similar. This was my first time eating at the Richmond location, and I really enjoyed the food. 4 dishes were shared between me and my mom, and they were delicious. Shrimp dumplings, being the king of all dim sum dishes, tasted super fresh and showed great technique of dumpling making here at Red Star. The dumplings were hitting all the marks. The filling of a good shrimp dumpling should contain a combination of whole shrimps and chopped shrimp. Besides shrimp. Other ingredients should be very minimal and should not be more than a couple tiny shreds of ginger or young bamboo shoots.

The dim sum overall at Red Star is very disappointing. Why does the food taste like a $2.00 dim sum restaurant? Actually, a $2.00 dim sum restaurant may even serve better food. How can there be such inconsistencies between Red Star in Richmond and Vancouver? Is the Richmond location a lower end of Red Star? Like a discounted version? But with full prices? What pissed me off the most is that we LITERALLY drove past Red Star in Marpole and I was stupid enough to travel to Richmond just to try a different location. To top things off, we had to rush back to Vancouver to check up on something so passed the Marpole location again!

...I love how they decided to start using a picture menu! It makes it much easier for folks like me who can’t read chinese characters. Unfortunately, the food was sub-par. Nothing particularly stood out

I think there are definitely better places for dim sum so I would skip this place the next time I’m in Vancouver.

For me, the most enjoyable part of the spot prawn was it’s head. I got beautifully sweet, briny ocean glory form the liquified guts contained in the heads of the prawns. The sweetness of the prawn heads had such enjoyable flavours that they almost approached uni territory, stopping short only becauce there was so little of the liquified goodness contained in each head compared to each sea urchin.

Though excellent, the roast duck we had at Red Star Richmond was not the best version we had in the area. It came in second place to the superlative version we had at this same restaurant’s Vancouver location. We did, however, have a soup dumpling that was better than any we’ve had in the area. This version even bested the previous champion: the soup dumplings we had at this same restaurant’s Vancouver location. It says a lot about a restaurant when different locations of the same chain serves the best and second-best versions of not one but two dishes. It shows their overall dedication to putting out an outstanding product. So I won’t be nitpicking the differences between the quality of the dishes when I next visit one of these two restaurants. I’ll instead be asking them to serve me the lettuce wrapped duck bits first, before I lose my appetite by overstuffing myself again.

..food overall is great but bad service and hard parking really turns customers away.... would only come again for BBQ duck

Red Star Seafood Restaurant is classified as one of those high-end Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. It's even a little pricier than Kirin . However, I don't think this restaurant deserves being in the "high-end" class, mainly because its service is so-so and the staff are a little cocky. It's one of those Chinese restaurants they serve you like royalties if you are a regular visitor. And it just so happens that they were having a banquet later that evening, so we were given less attention. Half BBQ Duck Plum Sauce for BBQ Duck We decided to go for a less traditional dim sum lunch today because my girlfriend and I had a date with our mom's. So, we just let the mom's order. First up is the BBQ Duck with Plum Sauce. We have heard that the BBQ Duck here is really good. So, we decided to give it a try. Conclusion, it wasn't bad. The flavour was ther

The family went to Red Star Seafood Restaurant in Richmond. They are another large Chinese restaurant specializing in Dim Sum for Lunch and large dinners at night. When we asked if Red Star was affiliated with the Red Star in Tsimshatsui, HK…they said they are not related at all. Apparently, lots of patrons come in asking the same question since the name is the same. Red Star is located in Presidents Plaza, which is on top of T&T. They are not as elegant as Fortune House in Metrotown, but it's normal. They have high ceilings, draped curtains and a chandelier in the middle. We first ordered the watercress soup . This came delivered in a pot and made about 8 bowls. The waiter will soup it out into bowls for you. They remove all the watercress, meat, dates, and other ingredients into a separate dish for you. They also give you sauce to dip the meat. This soup was refreshing, but it's something you can make at home yourself. When the meat came out of the pot, it started drying up really

Both visit we ordered this. It’s blanched geoduck with another similar food item. I have no idea what the English name of that other thing is but in Chinese it’s 桂花蚌. I’m pondering whether or not to tell you exactly what that is…
