Review Ora Sushi - Richmond

Keila Ikeda
I used to be a loyal customer, but I don't think I will return to this place. Last time we noticed the food hadn't the same quality, but we thought it was a specific problem. Today I had the worst experience. I don't know if they changed the owner or manager. It's not worth, it's overpriced! Actually, the price is the same, but they reduced the food amount a lot, the quality isn't the same, the service were lack. The sushi thickness is now 1/3 in comparison to the sushi in the past, the food were bland, We waited too much for our food and my husband's food arrived about 10 minutes after. The waitress used to offer tea or water, checked if everything was ok with the food and paid attention to customer needs. I don't know if they didn't receive a training. I am really sad for writing this review because I always recommended this place to my friends.

We intended to have Greek food that day but ended up here coz our original choice was closed, and we're glad we came in. This is one of the best Japanese restaurant in Richmond. The salad is loaded with seafood, i kinda want to ask for extra greens. The sauce has a nice touch of spicy flavor that's good to the palate. Unlike other teryaki don I have tried in Richmond where the bowl is heavy on rice that is almost losing its flavor, this rice bowl is just perfect to make tummy satisfied. Although our order of soft crab came in late, it was still worth the wait. I will come back to try the Ora tower next visit and will update this posting.

We went here on Canada Day and it was packed! Even though the resto was full of customers, the servers were able to serve our order quickly. Prices are reasonable and the owners and crew are very nice. Food tastes yummy!

The Japanese restaurant we regularly visit was packed so we came to Ora sushi but will not be returning. Service: Terribly lacking When we went in the server (lady with pony tail and glasses) just looked up from the bussing station and didn't bother addressing us at all. The place was emptied so we seated ourselves. There were no other tables, yet she didn't bring us any water nor come to take our order for 20 mins until we called out to her, then she acknowledged us but continued to organize empty take out boxes/folding bags and came over 15 mins later stating she was ready. We were quite ready, to walk out the door from being ignored. When the food came, instead of placing it on the table, she would hover it and wait for us to understand she is passing it to us and have us to take the dish and set it on the table ourselves. There were no refills of water and whenever we asked for anything, it would take her awhile to bring it. When other tables started coming in, another server came out to help, which was much more friendly and competent. Hopefully the restaurant would be able to properly train the first server to up their game. Food: Edible but low quality The sashimi still had fish bones. Food portions are very small, almost half the size we'd get at the other restaurant but prices were par to other places. In general it was an unpleasant experience, there would be a lot for this restaurant to work on.

Intended to have brunch at another restaurant but it was closed. Glad I decided to try here out. Enjoyed my meals and the waitress was friendly..it was my first trying hot Sake..It wasn’t what I expected lol(I’m not a fan of beer, it tasted so much like beer)..good service..loved the bibimbap

Little pricey but food and service are awesome. Definitely coming back again.

Meh. Not worth the price. Food is mediocre. I keep on forgetting why we don't eat there and when we do, it's always disappointing. They overcook chicken all the time. The most recent food I ordered was the chicken katsu and look at the rice 😂 I should remember not to go there ever again.

Had lunch here today. Ichiro was fully booked so we found this place. There were only 2 other tables of diners so we got seated right away. The servers are very young and inexperienced and clearly don't know anything about Japanese food or their own menu. The service was horrible. The food however was very good and reasonably priced. We won't be back but if you want good food at a reasonable price and don't mind waiting for it and asking several times for it, this place will suffice.

May, 12, 2019 @ dinner

I read reviews here and mentioned the service was not that good... not really.. they are fast and friendly. Maybe we ordered a lot. It look like run by Japanese ladies, with Asian servers. I saw Japanese ladies cashier, at kitchen and sushi maker.

We had reservation at 7:30pm.. they gave us table right away with my name on their note. We got nice window seats with a lot of flowers around us.

We ordered:

1 bottle of large kirin to start... then slowly look through the menu. Their menu look like mega sushi to us.

Then we ordered:

Prawn tempura... its pretty hot, crispy, fresh and natural sweet from the prawns... we like this one..

Grilled Saba... skin not crispy enough.. tasteless .. I didn't eat it after 2 bites.. my hubby finished for me...

Special salmon belly sushi... big piece of salmon tataki on top of rice, but not tasty as mega

Toro sushi... it's so fresh and cheap... we ordered 2 pcs first then ordered 6 pcs more

Saba sushi... tiny pcs... soso

Tobiko sushi... they gave us red color , not orange color one..

Japanese manager suddenly came out and served us with big smile, even not busy.. I found out next few tables from us.. didn't order that much food , like us... LOL

Uni nigiri sushi... so fishy , not fresh, no wonder so cheap?! $4.50 each..I had already told my hubby.. it's not season anymore.. but he still ordered it..

Hamachi toro sushi... so good and fresh.. we totally ordered 6 pcs

1 more large kirin...

Unagi sushi... too lean... dried... falling apart

Oysters tempura... so tiny.. exactly like mega

Spicy chicken karaage.... batter was too thick, not much meat inside... I ate one piece and didn't touch it... just pack to go..

I paid... $154.85 + 18% tips... for 2 of us... not bad.. worth to try..

Will go there again for sushi and sashimi, but not cook food

Here's some update menu pictures

What a shame! After ownership changed the food quality has gone down significantly and the staff are rude and unfriendly. Sushi tastes different in a bad way and the food looks much smaller than before. I'm never coming back I can guarantee you that!

Made the mistake of returning for a second time and it's even worse than I remember. I came here a long time ago and left very disappointed but the recent visit was worse. It's far too expensive ($30+ for two rolls) and way too similar to another restaurant in the area. The taste is below average and my rolls constantly fell apart so that annoyed me so much. Learn how to make rolls properly if you're a sushi cook! Portions are smaller than most sushi places and service is very slow and unfriendly. There are many delicious sushi restaurants in the city and this is not good Japanese food so I don't know why they charge so much. What a waste of money.

We headed out to Steveston Thursday night for a walk and ended up having dinner at Ora Sushi after we passed by and saw their menu on the window. It looked quite busy so we decided to try it out as we were getting hungry. We got in at the right time since there was one table for 2 available at the moment. We were promptly seated and given our menus and tea.

Ora Sushi Review

I go to Ora Sushi many time, I enjoy the food. I like the friendly staff and I have met the Korean owner. I like the spicy sushi flavours and all the other spicy dishes that are offered. The place is very clean and the food is freshly cooked. The prices are not very expensive. The food takes a little longer than other places, but taste great. If you are in a rush go to another restaurant.

This is a restaurant that only sit no more than 20 people. I talk to the family who owned it, they do not like large parties. It is a small place and it is not permitted for a large party. It is better to take out for large parties. That all for now.

漂亮
Jolie

Ora sushi is one of the smaller sushi restaurants in steveston. I personally love more 'hole in the wall' restaurants. They tend to have better food and a more home-y feel.

Based on my experience dining during their lunch hour, the food was very well made and presented. Their service was readily available and atmosphere of their restaurant was very comfortable.

My favourite dish was the tuna tataki, which is layered on top of a thin layer of greens. The nigiri had just enough rice and was carefully wrapped. The salmon oshi was really tasty and filling because it's basically rice pressed firmly down to pack in flavours of the fish and toppings.

Overall I love the place! Can't wait to enjoy another meal here!

So good especially if you are looking for so good vegetable rolls (which I always am). The caterpillar roll is super cute and tasty. The vegetable roll has shredded beets in it.

Ora Sushi is extremely unethical and very unoriginal! Their menu is near identical to Mega Sushi which is really close by. I've been to Mega Sushi many times before so I was shocked to realize that the descriptions of the special rolls and dishes were identical word for word. Just a few names were changed slightly. I was curious what the relation was so I asked a server if they were run by the same owner and she said no! Apparently the owner of Ora Sushi is a former employee of Mega Sushi and she copied all the dishes from there without permission! The owner clearly lacks any originality and what she's done is super unethical. I'm surprised she hasn't been sued yet! I won't go to Ora Sushi from now on because I refuse to support a copycat. As a business owner myself, I know how troublesome illegal copycats can be. Besides, the rolls looked very similar but the taste of the sauces and ingredients were noticeably worse than Mega Sushi. Clearly there's a reason why the original is way more popular than this place.

Great place! the bim bop bowl is bomb!! Spicy agedashi tofu is also really good. I'm not into the raw fish. I go white style with beef teriyaki and California rolls. This place makes it well. Not chewy fatty grade f beef. It was lean and tasty with a good teriyaki sauce. I'll be back!

Similar menu as Mega Sushi just few blocks away. Just changed some of the menu names...probably same owner. Food was ok. Chicken Karagge was like Mini chicken bites and a little dry. Sushi was fresh. Service was slow. Mega sushi is better.

My friend and I ate here for dinner tonight. It wasn't busy so we got a table immediately. I ordered the Crazy Roll which was deep fried cali roll. Our servers were very nice and friendly (it was a man and a woman). They were attentive to our needs. After waiting 20 mins, my friend and I got our orders. She ordered takoyaki and bibimbap which was served on a hot sizzling bowl. It smelled and tasted good! The food was great and the serving is generous for the price. The place itself isn't that big but it's clean and it's a good place to chat with friends. Looking forward to coming back here!!

Ora is located in the heart of Moncton Street in Steveston Village where the old Moncton Cafe used to be (one of our favourite Japanese curry house). We always pass by Ora since their renovation, but never thought of giving this place a try because there are so many good existing sushi restaurants nearby (ie/ Ichiro and Mega Sushi... etc). Just visited here for the first time and I am already pleased with their food and friendly atmosphere. I believe this is a Korean operated sushi restaurant so the taste can be a bit different from traditional Japanese Sushi house. I really like Vegetable Udon and Vegetable Yakisoba. Vegetable Udon is served with light and flavourful soup, and the udon is in chewy texture. Vegetable Yakisoba is delicious with lots of vegetables and not too salty nor greasy like some other restaurants. Asides from their expensive special sushi rolls, we chose the affordable maki sushi. I love the seaweed they used and the fresh ingredients they have. The avocado maki is made in decent portion filled with lots of fresh cut avocados and cucumbers. The Spicy Yam Tempura Rolls is prepared with spicy mayonnaise on top. Sushi is enticed with more flavour yet it minimized the dryness in deep fried yam tempura. I would say the location is a bit isolated from city centre and parking can be a hassle. However, It is nice to visit during day time and get a chance to walk around Steveston and visit some unique shops nearby. I will definitely be back to try other selections from the menu and recommend this restaurant to others!

My favorite place was full so I gave Ora a try and I left pretty disappointed. First of all, the prices here are insane. I mean who would pay $15 for one meager special roll?!

Also, the rolls here rely far too heavily on sauces. A little bit of sauce is always good but the rolls here are completely drenched in sauce so it's hard to really know what you are tasting. As a result, the food felt a little artificial and I couldn't really savour what I was eating.

Next let's move on to the service. My table didn't get any attention from the servers after our initial order and the food took forever to come out. It looked like they only had one sushi chef so maybe that was why but it was awful to wait forever for the food. There're much better restaurants nearby so I think I'll pass on Ora unless I get desperate again.

The California Roll was neatly constructed and the mayonnaise in the center provided a creamy texture. There was a decent amount of crab meat, but the ingredients were average in quality and essentially standard fare. The Chicken Teriyaki came with a decent amount of tender chicken that exhibited a nice grilled flavour. The stir-fried vegetables underneath, being quite savoury, worked as a good complement to the chicken.

Great food! I love the way they presented the meal. Very friendly atmosphere. Very relaxing ambiance. On my personal opinion, the best sushi restaurant I've been to in Richmond! I would recommend this to my families and friends. Good job to the owner!

Ora Sushi is the new kid on the block.
Their menu is similar to Mega Sushi just a few blocks away but better!
Sushi was fresh and prepared well.
I had crazy roll, golden roll, chopped scallops roll and chocolate ice cream for dessert.
