Review Carver's Steakhouse & Lounge - Richmond

Aaron Tsang
We found this place at the last minute to celebrate Christmas. We wanted to have steak dinner, that's why we choose this place. But they had a special menu for Dec 24 and 25 only, which does NOT include any steak! Wrong move. If this is a steakhouse, you should always have steak on all of your menus. I honestly was disappointed by that. I had boneless beef ribs. The meat turned out to be tender, and I would say it's not bad, but it's also not memorable. The server was good. He was hospitable. I don't recommend this place at all.

It was fathers day so we decided to spend a day in Richmond and have a nice dinner. I dined with Carver's on multiple occasions in the past and had great experiences. I'm not sure if it was because the chefs have changed since then, I thought it didnt compare with what I was used to in the past. The food was ok. My wifes steak wasn't cooked to order. My salmon was dry as can be and the salad was way too big. Deserts were boring. Service was slow. I had to ask for a bandage for my daughter's cut on multiple occasions. I asked multiple times for a to go box.

Didn't have much expectation when we went in, but for sure we left with our greatest disappointment. Don't waste your money unless you love escargots - the only edible item on the dine out menu (at least the ones we had were not) As a steakhouse (or so they called themselves), the steaks that we had (NY + Oscar) were tough, dry and way too chewy! Escargots - surprisingly good Crab cakes - no good Steak - tough, dry, chewy ( we love chewy steak but definitely not that chewy) Cheesecake - i personally dont think banana and cheesecake makes a good combo Chocolate eruption - a decent chocolate cake Our server was friendly and attentive. So 1 star for her and 1 for the escargots.

It's probably a reason why I like this steakhouse: eastern European food servers! Got the greatest care and the smiles for my food. Got a perfectly medium rare rib eye steak! Also really enjoy my appetizer (calamari and baked cheese top oyster) pricewise might be high if you don't have a Groupon.

The filet mignon was grilled to perfection. It was juicy and flavourful. Truly an amazing steak. We also got the rib eye steak, it was grilled exceptional well. The cut of meat had a lot of fat and tendon but it was still flavourful. The sides included Carver’s grana padano gratin potato, and seasonal vegetables. These were just so so. Nothing mind-blowing. For dessert, we had turtle molten cake - Fudgy chocolate bundt, toasted pecans, caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, berry coulis. This was not overly sweet but just right. It was delicious and tasty.

Total professionals. Service wasn't fast, but paced well. Other than that, fantastic food, great drinks, music and atmosphere in point. Expensive, and worth the money if you can afford it. It's good to be King.

Pleasantly surprised how good the food was. Boston clam chowder, cesar salad, salmon and steak. Usually never order salmon at a restaurant but was blown away by it. Steak was perfectly cooked and the service was fantastic! Servers actually cared about their food. Really looking forward to go back.

If good food with very scant service and drinks made poorly is what you're looking for, Carver's is your place. It had been a few years since we last visited Carvers because the service was not great that time either. We made a reservation on OpenTable to make sure we got a table on a Saturday night at 7, only to arrive and find the restaurant less than half full, on a Saturday night, in September, albeit a rainy one. We were seated and quickly water glasses were filled. After that we waited more than 5 minutes before our server arrived. We ordered two sodas for the time being which he brought back a few minutes later. We were not expecting 2 cans, which he poured for us, at a Steakhouse ( which has a lounge and presumably soda on tap) We ordered an appetizer, which was not listed on OpenTable, sweet and spicy steak bites, which were excellent. When this was ordered I also decided to order a Bellini which I have occasionally. He informed me they made them with champagne which is a version not recommended but served occasionally at restaurants. My wife wanted one as well, which I did not know, but he was gone before she had a chance to speak up. What arrived was a champagne flute with peach chunks at the bottom and champagne above, and no puree. It was not exactly what I expected nor all that enjoyable. Chose not to order one for her as well. We asked about the cost of their three-course dinner because there was no price listed we were informed $35. We were also told there were items not listed on the menu which we never would have known otherwise. So if you would like their 8 oz prime rib for $29 or 10 oz for $34 you have to ask. We are glad we did because the prime rib was excellent, served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and seasonal veggies. Service continued to lag to the point where we waved down another gentleman to ask for a water refill and the check, not wanting to wait another 15 minutes or so to be asked if we wanted the check. So the only refills we got were water, as we received the check. Dessert was offered finally as the machine was brought out for us to make payment. Good food, great company, but unacceptable service over a 90 minute meal. Likely a few more years before we consider visiting Carver's again.

Long story short, we were there back in Christmas for dinner and didn’t have a good experience. The restaurant apologized and took care of the bill. They wanted us to go back. We went back tonight and gave another shot.
Service: good
Food: appy were decent. Escargot and calamari
Main course: prime rib was a big disappointment.
Rib eye was not bad.
Overall: average
Had dinner here with a big family party. Excellent service and good food. Management went out of their way to make us welcome, despite being a very busy night for them. Fine selection of steaks and preparations, and a good selection of alternatives. My chowder was excellent, very tasty and served piping hot; I had the NY Steak - good quality steak and cooked just as I like it. Food presentation is very nice too, with interesting accompaniments, and servings are right sized. No problem getting appropriate meals for the two very young children in the party. We had a private room, which suited the family get-together.

Definitely one of the best restaurants in Richmond, British Columbia.

Total an unpleased experience. The food is so so, and the service was really bad. The waiter did not even serve pepper for my New York steak! He brought the pepper to my table said he will come back but only came back after I've finished half of my dish! I served myself with the pepper.
By the way, I could see after they made me waited almost an hour for my main dish, I could see my dish was put on the kitchen counter waiting for someone to bring to my table for 7 minutes!!! It's beef, they served it warm, not hot! I could not wait to pay and get out of that place. Will never go back again.

There were quite a few good reviews on this restaurant. There was a groupon deal on this, so I decided to try it out. VERY disappointed! We tried the appetizer Seafood Chowder, which was lukewarm, but the Arugula salad was really good. For the entree, we tried the rack of lamb, which was seasoned and cooked very nicely. However the steak quality was quite poor. I would have thought that for a steakhouse, they would have great quality steak, but my supermarket carried better steak. The potatoes on the side was cold, but barely reheated properly. Although the presentation was very nice. The dessert we shared the Turtle Molten Cake with the vanilla ice cream, and that was really good. However, I thought the service was pretty good, so I was ready to give them a decent tip, but when the bill came, they charged me the tax (which is normal), but they also put on a 15% service charge. I double checked the groupon, it didn't say that there should be a service charge, so I asked the waitress, she said she didn't know what it was, and that it is automatic by the computer. So I paid the amount on the bill, not a penny over and left. I will never go back here again.

One of the best steak. compare to keg or chop steak house in richmond meat itself is tender and juicy and price wise its actually cheaper than other steakhouse out there. I ordered arugula spinach salad and Rib eye medium rare, spinach arugula salad is well balanced and taste refreshing, Rib eye was very juicy and tender, and it also come with their seosonal vegetables and potato gratin. some places like gotham steakhouse you have to order separate and very expensive. carvers steakhouse will be my favorite steakhouse.

The service at Carver`s was amazing. Everyone we spoke to was helpful.

In terms of steaks, we had the NY Strip Loin and Filet Mignon. While the NY Strip Loin was great, the Filet Mignon was forgettable. The texture of the mignon was mushy and felt like it was rushed to be defrosted or something.

We shared a couple of appies and they were a bit of a hit or miss as well. The escargot was bland and the calamari was decent.

What is not to love about steak? In terms of meals, a steak dinner is probably one of the most “primal”. A plate with a piece of red meat and some vegetables is pretty fair representation to what our ancestors would have (well probably not all neatly plated…). A slab of grilled meat, smokey on the outside and tender inside, is probably one the most enjoyable meals out there. Sara spotted a sweet deal for Carver’s Steakhouse on Groupon and she pounced on the deal like our primal ancestors would on wild game. Sara had purchased the Groupon deal that Carver had. I was honestly surprised by what was being offered as part of the Groupon. For $69. we had the choice of 2 entrees and 2 appetizers and 1 dessert. Honestly, that is a fairly good value for a Groupon! The appetizer I selected was the calamari. The batter had trouble staying on the calamari and the dish was a greasy one. I originally wanted to get the Chef salad, which comes with a 6oz steak, but I thought that would be meat overkill; however, once I saw how greasy the calamari was, I instantly had regrets on my decision. The spicy dip was good though. Sadly, I ended up eating the greens that the calamari was served in. The greens were soaked in oil and that was a bad move on my part. The second appetizer we had was the escargot. The escargot was disappointing as I found everything to be bland. I imagined that all the ingredients was tossed together at the last minute and baked. There is some disconnect between the flavors. The whole dish just didn’t really mesh well together. I was looking forward to the escargot as shitake mushrooms and cheese made for an interesting combination on paper. Sara’s main was the filet mignon, or as I nicknamed it filet “ meh-on “. The scarcity and tenderness of the cut makes the filet mignon one of the more desirable steaks. The filet mignon that we got would not make anything think this was a prized piece of meat. Sara had asked for medium rare, but her steak was more on the mediu

Fantastic food at Carver's. I wanted to provide a positive review after having seen a few negative reviews of Carver's. I had actually planned to bring my family to Carver's for Dine Out but was put off by the negative reviews. However, when a great Groupon offer came up, I decided to try it with a good friend of mine. From the minute I walked in the door until we left, I was thoroughly impressed by Carver's. They had an exceptional wait staff, attentive and friendly. I think it was the manager that brought the food out himself, he was extremely friendly and accommodating, even offering more jus if we wanted it. I also liked how the staff wasn't overly attentive either, they let me and my friend have a great conversatuon without relentlessly interrupting (which has been the case at some high-end restaurants in Vancouver I've been to). And the food was absolutely fantastic. I had a crab cake appetizer which was fabulous, and my New York Steak was cooked to perfection. My friend is a self-confessed foody and she loved her Oyster appetizer and filet minion. Our desserts were wonderful too. I would HIGHLY recommend Carver's. Good service, good food, and very reasonable prices. My family typically does large family dinners of 25-30 people for special events at the Keg, I am going to try to convince them to do our next dinner at Carver's.

Terrible Food and Service!. We went to Carver's Steakhouse for the first time during Dine Out. When we arrived, we were seated fairly quickly and had our menus. None of the servers tended to our table for at least 15 minutes after being seated. After flagging one down, we wanted to order crab cakes on top of the Dine Out menu. Our waiter informed us that they were only doing the Dine Out menu during DOV so he suggested adding an additional Dine Out appetizer. We took his suggestion and ordered an extra dish.

Our appetizers came (baked oysters and seafood chowder) soon after we ordered. The baked oysters tasted no better than the ones you get at all you can eat sushi places. The amount of seafood chowder was literally less than a cup worth; there was a lump of butter and flour in the chowder. At this point, a can of Chunky soup was better. When we finished our appetizers, we were presented with a lychee sprbet with pistachio cookie to "clear our taste buds". By this time we knew they forgot about our additional appetizer.

Next, our main course came (lamb shank and filet mignon). The lamb shank was alright, nothing special, but the brussel sprouts that it came with were just awful! They were deep fried to the point where they were burnt, then rolled around in balsamic vinegar. The overwhelming burnt greasy taste was lingering in the air even when I set it aside. The taste of the burnt brussel sprouts left a bad taste in my mouth thus ruining the lamb shank. The filet mignon wasn't much better either, as it was already cut up into pieces when it was served. The meat was done the way we wanted (rare) but it was tasteless and mushy.

Dessert was OK but nothing special.

After having an awful meal, we just wanted to pay and leave. It took about 15 minutes and 3 people to get us the card machine to pay.

Overall 3/10
A Cook's Opinion
Just alright. Carvers seems to be a nice steakhouse with reasonable prices however service is quite slow. Food is decent but not the best. They do a good job presenting the food as better than it is. Don't expect to be full by any means. $35 steak dinner 10oz seems barely 10oz, comes with mash and veggies. Mash being one decorative swirl and 5-7 small pieces of veggies. Same with salmon.

Nice atmosphere, food pretending to be better that it is. Value until you see portions. Typical restaurant connected to hotel.

Barbara. Celebrated our 50th anniversary at Carver's. Had 55 people celebrate with us. Everyone had an excellent meal, lots of compliments about the steaks, chicken & fish, Michael the manager was fantastic, couldn't have been more helpful. Certainly the staff couldn't have been nicer, the service was perfect, everyone had a lovely time. Would give the restaurant 10 out of 10.

Bad Service. It took me 3 hours to finish a 3 courses meal.UnbelievableI ! The steak was okay.I have cream burlee for the dessert and that was the worst cream burlee I have ever had.The texture was strange and the taste was not good as well.
The staff need to be trained...........they didn't really listen to their customer's request.A big mess on my take away order.I am sure I will not go back again.

Great food,. Just had the best restaurant meal in a long, long time. The well-aged Angus beef was superb.
We will definitely return. Quality of food is equal to downtown Vancouver steak houses at a fraction of the price.

Very bad service. We stood at the door for 5 mins before a waiter approach us. During this 5 mins we only see one waiter serving all tables and we already expected that it is gonna be slow.
After we were seated we had to wait for another 10 mins to get the menu. Then we waited for another 20 mins before the waiter finally came to take the order. We ordered 1 appetizer and 2 entries. Took 30 mins for the appetizer to come and another 30 for the entrees. Checked out was also unpleasant as he dropped off the machine and walked away. I left without waiting for him to return. God knows how long it will take.
Food is okay. Service sucks.

Awesome food!. Just came back from a date night at Carvers. We used a SocialShopper voucher. The restaurant was completely empty when we walked in, and only about 3 more tables were filled by the time we left, but don't be scared off by how quiet the place is. The food was superb. Awesome crab cakes and awesome filet mignon. They are perhaps not in the best of locations in Richmond, and maybe that is part of why they are so quiet. The food is so good though. If I needed a mid day snack and happened to be in the area, I'd even go back for the crab cakes alone. It was sad to see how quiet the place was. They definitely deserve more business. Give them a try and help them to stay around. They truly deserve to have more customers in their restaurant.

Amazing Experience. Really good. Best steak I have ever had. The sirloin was tender and the fat melted in my mouth as a complimentary texture to the rich flavor of the meat. Would love to go again

This restaurant seriously has the best filet mignon I have ever eaten in my life. Better than Morton's or Gotham for sure.Chef Boban is unbelievable!!!

The boyfriend and I come here for special occasions as its super quiet in comparison to the restaurants downtown where we live. Dinner here is an experience. Have a martini to start, have the oysters as an appy with any of the beautiful salads, filet with bourbon peppercorn sauce with any of the incredible sides and let your server recommend a bottle of red. Finish with an espresso martini and dessert and you will be beyond satisfied. VERY highly recommended and cannot wait to go back.

February 7 , 2018
I tried their dine out menu.
We had tuna tataki, escargot (mushroom was bigger than escargot), I ordered my steak with medium rare,it's end up gave me blue rare; My hubby ordered his steak with rare, but they gave him medium.. we don't bother to ask them do it over again. Cuz they are extremely busy. We just switch our steak.

January, 15th, 2016.
We Had first day dine out at Carver's Steakhouse with my hubby. We tried their salmon tataki (it's fresh/ tasty / nice decoration), baked escargot (too oily and tasteless ), braised lamb (it's soft and tasty), creamy crab sauce on sirloin steak (asked for rare/ perfect cook/ couldn't find any crab meat on top), 3 glasses of red wine, lemon cheesecake (not smooth/ sour/ so disappointed ), chocolate eruption (so smooth and not that sweet/ I like it myself)

-----------------------------------------------
Went there for father's day dinner. I ordered medium rare filet mignonette, but it's over cook, taste like beef jerky to me. But it's taste juicy and favour after they changed it. I also like their seafood chowder.. a lot of Shrimps, clams and salmon inside. Lemon cheesecakes are so fresh, light and not sweet, but the raspberry sauce on side is way too sweet for me. Good services and nice atmosphere.

October, 2, 2015
I didn't go there for half year. I went there for dinner with my hubby tonight. We Had seafood chowder (used to be a lot of clam/ shrimp/ salmon and scallops inside, but it's full of corns and potatoes instead, but it's still tasty ); sizzling sirloin steak ( it's extremely small portion for 10 oz, it's look 6oz to me); filet mignon (still good as before, but too small); caesar salad (under dressing, we need to ask for extra dressing) ; turtle molten cake , cream burlee and 2 glasses of red wine for our late dinner tonight. . Their steak is getting smaller than before.. even we ordered 10 oz.

We tried their turtle molten cake with roast pecan (the chocolate cake is hard like a rock, so disappointed )with strawberry syrup on side and vanilla cream burlee / pumpkin spice cream burlee for dessert. Services are still good..but food is worst than before.

Loved it! Can't Wait to Return!. My mother-in-law and I stayed at the hotel and decided to stop in for an appetizer and glass of wine. We were warmly greeted by Michael, the Manager, who checked in with us a few times during the evening to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. We ended up staying for a 3 course dinner - and it was excellent from start to finish. Very good value, the presentation of the food was exceptional, and the flavours of all the dishes were delicious. We enjoyed ourselves so much we returned the next day for another dinner.

As someone who worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years, I have high expectations - and they were met -- and exceeded. Thank you to the staff for making our dining experience so memorable. We will definitely returnto Carver's Steak House on our next visit to Richmond.

Not worth it for DineOut!. I went with some friends who wanted to try their DineOut, but I had planned on ordering from the regular menu. I had looked at it online and saw that they usually offer a 3 course meal for actually a few dollars less than the DineOut menu! And more choices!

When I got there I was told that I HAD to order from their DineOut menu which was $38 plus taxes and tips. I did not walk out...

Had the beef goulash (beef stew), New York steak and their dessert which was a sample of 3 tiny bites of: cheese cake, chocolate mousse, and berry tart.

The only thing I liked was the steak, it was tender and delicious. The mashed potato that came with it was bland and boring; the vege sides were decent but it was just a few pieces of zucchini (?) The goulash was small and ... just a stew basically, with a fancy name. Dessert was just some tart shells, chocolate shells put together, nothing personal or special about them.

If they had allowed me to order from the regular menu I would have just had the steak and that would have been fine.

Came here for Dine Out Vancouver and overall found the food decent. I had the lamb shank which was good and my companion had the steak which was average. I wasn't too fond of the atmosphere but the staff was very nice. I wouldn't recommend dining here unless you were doing so as part of the Dine Out event. Otherwise you'll be paying quite a bit for decent food.

Expensive. And not worth it. So so steak, a bunch of guys who look like they haven't had food in weeks chowing down steak.

Best steak in Richmond?. Its hard to find a quality steakhouse away from Downtown Vancouver. Carvers is one of the good places. In my opinion there are only 2 steakhouses in Richmond, and Carver's is the better of the two. Tastey steak, good service, nice quiet environment. NOTE: They serve the steak on a VERY hot plate so order your meat accordingly. Example: Order Rare if you actually want Med. because the steak will cook a bit more while you eat it. Kinda like stone grill. For me this is not a big deal as I've learned to order appropriately. I really like this place!

Good Steak.. The steak was delicious. It came on a really hot plate, so I had to be careful not to touch the plate for the first 5 minutes or so. The meat was really tender, juicy and soft; really easy to cut with your knife. I asked for a medium steak, and it was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed it a lot. The steak only comes with a some season vegetables, we also ordered a few side dishes ($7 dollars each) to go with the steak. The garlic mash potatoes was worth a note because was also really delicious; good match with the steak.

Carver’s Steakhouse is a restaurant attached to the Executive Plaza Hotel in Richmond. Obviously by telling with the name, they specialize in steak! I’ve been hearing about this place lots from my friend Richboy, and I decided to give it a try. After seeing this great deal on SocialShopper, I couldn’t let it slip! The deal was $45 for a three-course meal for 2, with a value up to $93. I took Sleepy here for his birthday since I know he loves steak :) Many people associate restaurants that are attached to hotels with average or mediocre food. Carver’s Steakhouse is a perfect example of the contrary. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a nice host. I think his name was Michael. I mentioned to him that we had a voucher, and he kindly explained the limitations of the voucher to us. He even gave us recommendations of what to pick for our appetizers and entrees.

Overall we had a wonderful dinner and great steaks. I think the quality of the food, combined with artful presentation and friendly service is definitely worth a repeat visit :)

Going to a steakhouse in Richmond may not be the first thing that comes to mind, considering the amount of Asian restaurants available in the city. As for the steakhouses in Richmond, there are only three which includes Carver's, Chop Steakhouse and the good ol' reliable Keg. As for myself, I have made it a goal to try every steakhouse in BC and because there are not many, it can be easily done. Also, conveniently, Social Shopper was offering a voucher for $45.00 which includes a three course dinner; one appetizer, two entrees and a dessert to share. Who can pass on a great offer considering the visit was bound to happen anyway?! After circling the parking lot for ten minutes looking for a spot, we called the restaurant and asked where else we could park. Turns out, the manager mentioned we could park anywhere and if we get a ticket, the restaurant would reimburse us! So we ended up parking in the staff section. Walking in, we waited at the front for a while and a friendly server came

Aside from the usual checkups after each plate was brought out, there was no interactions. For it not being too busy when we were there, our dishes came out rather slow. When the bill was being paid, our server just left the machine there after the amount was entered and walked away. I, having experience as a cashier, knew how to run the machine, had to run the transaction and print the receipts myself. Overall, the night felt like a mistake that I would not want repeated. Unless I had to go for some special occasion that I didn’t have to pay for.

My entree, the 7oz filet mignon! It was fantastic. I got it medium rare and finally, a place where it actually comes medium rare. Most places I’ve been to lately or in the past year has always failed to deliver medium rare when I ask for it. The inside was bloody red, and the juice that came out of that filet was fabulous.

We started with a taste of the Cheviche with Scallops cooked in lemon . It was very good, the fish was flakey and the presentation was lovely.

A couple of friends of ours wanted to go for out for steak and as we were all in Richmond, it came down to either Chop or Carver's. We'd never tried Carver's so we decided to give it a shot. When we got there, the restaurant was completely dead. Not a great sign for a Friday night. The decor is nice, and very steakhouse-y. I think maybe this is just the wrong neighborhood for this type of restaurant. Steaks at Carver's come with potato and veg, and for an extra $7 or $8 you can get a starter and a dessert as well. That sounded like a good idea so we both went with that option. Given that we were the only table there, we got pretty good service. We got some complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar which was...well it was bread. Nothing remarkable. For my starter, I went with the Caesar Salad. This was a little bland, and the portion was so small! It was a super skinny plate and I was disappointed by that. Also, instead of croutons, there was one big crispy piece of bread
