I recalled reading from a Globe and Mail article about a list of suggested Hwy 7 restaurants to visit for Chinese food. I was naturally curious because I have been working in the area for years. White Orchid was a restaurant that I have never visited. In the previous placeholder, there was a restaurant called something "Delicious" which opened only for 2 hours a day at lunch. Many of my colleagues thought that this restaurant was operating a gambling den in the background.
White Orchid is wonderful little restaurant with quite a few special dishes available. There is a medium sized but surprisingly extensive menu that includes curries, rotis, crab, fried tofu, lobster, laksa, fried noodles, and satay.
On separate occassions I have tried their curry chicken with roti, which is delicious, wasabi mayo prawns, salted egg golden prawns, and fish tofu balls. Each dish was quite flavourful and a treat.
This is definitely a place I would come back to, it is worth the drive up to Richmond Hill!
Another hidden gem in Richmond Hill! I love this restaurant for their selection and flavours. They serve a mix of "Sing-Ma-Thai" (Singaporean, Malaysian, & Thai) cuisine that is slightly Westernized to cater to Canadian taste buds. The chefs are masterful at using the wok, and every steaming dish that comes out of the kitchen makes my mouth water. Some of my favourites include Bah Kut Teh, Fish Otah, Hainan Chicken with their special Coconut Rice (SO GOOD), and their Salted Egg Golden Prawns. I'm definitely visiting again because there are still so many things on the menu I want to try!
Best Laksa in town!. Saw the advertisement a while back, decided to come for the laksa, best laksa in town! The soupbase is AMAZING! WIll return for sure.
The White Orchid restaurant is a quaint little place encompassing a few specialities from southeast asian cuisine (notably Thai, Singapore, Malaysia, and China).
After starting off with some vegetarian spring rolls, my main dish that I was waiting to try for weeks was the classic Singapore Laksa. It's a real meal in itself with a flavorful and spicy creamy broth featuring coconut milk and curry. The base of this dish features thick egg noodles with one shrimp, half an egg, sliced fish cases, tofu, and bean sprouts. It was a real meal in itself (perfect for Winter) and even "I" had no room for desert :)
For drinks I stuck to soy milk as a perfect way to balance the spices from the main course.
Other key dishes featured in this mom and pop place include rotis, satay, and other hidden gems that I want to try in the future such as singapore sweet chilli crab, and portuguese sauce baked conch.
Irene, the co-owner made us feel comfortable and stopped by a couple of times to see if we enjoyed our selections.
Everything was made fresh to order and that was clearly in evidence by the taste.
One guest from the Philippines is a regular guest at this establishment. She ordered extra rotis to go.
The whole family was involved in getting this restaurant ready. The daughter was instrumental in designing the space thanks to her interior design acumen. The son, an engineer in training, helped build the restaurant itself.
As there are very few tables, I discovered that they do take reservations. It's good to keep in mind for busy nights so please call ahead.
I look forward to returning for the original, tasty and fresh menu items and pleasant ambiance.
