I normally go here for vietnamese food when I'm in town since other places have lacked in flavour and quality in the past. This weekend I tried their broiled pork and viet rolls on vermicelli. The pork looked unappetizing but it tasted good. Full flavour. The vietnamese rolls tasted alright but the rice paper was incredibly thick because the rolls lack a decent amount of filling, especially meat! They use cheaper quality vermicelli but I actually like the harder texture (I guess I like it because its different from what we'd use at home).
My dad had pho (beef rice noodle soup) and didn't like it. He complained that they used pho seasoning rather than cooking the broth from scratch with beef bones (we're a family of cooks and bakers...and my parents worked in the food industry for over 50 years so they can definitely know what they're talking about). They definitely need to tone down on the MSG in the soup (its too much when the soup tastes too sweet, slightly slimy consistency and makes your taste buds numb). My dad agreed that there was an excess of MSG. Mind you, MSG will not stop me from eating somewhere since its in everything nowadays, especially in asian food.
I tried some of the broth in my niece's wonton soup. It had a light, smooth flavour to it. My dad wasn't fond of it because he said the vegetables that were added to the soup made the broth sweet (my dad's very particular about how food is prepared and presented). In contrast, I liked that aspect about the wonton soup because the natural flavours and sweetness from the vegetables was the focal point of the broth.
Finally, my brother had the pork chop on rice, which he absolutely loves. I tried some of it and thought the meat was strongly seasoned. The flavour wasn't bad though. But nothing compares to the pork chop on rice in Vietnam!
This is my favorite place for a good old hangover cure.
Pretty basic Vietnamese food, nothing too special, but thats why I like it. Its consistent and good.
Id suggest Combo G, the Pho or one of the Vermicelli bowls.
The people who work there are always friendly as well.
They also have a cool fish there.
As someone from Vancouver, I've definitely had my fair share of Asian food. I love Vietnamese food and let me tell you, this is by far the best place I have ever been to.. I tried the pho (Combination beef) and the broth is very tasty. It's full of flavour and didn't leave me dying for a glass of water afterwards. I could taste all the different herbs that they had used and the deep flavours in the soup. They didn't cheap out on beef either.
I ordered #86,the Vietnamese combo with salad roll to go. Upon arriving home, I was disappointed to see that there was no salad roll. I called the shop just to be sure that I didn't mix it up, and the lady told me she would credit me back next time I was in (she took down my phone number and name). Wow. Such customer service! But in terms of taste, it was phenomenon. Once again, very strong flavours and no skimping on the meat!
I've found my go to Vietnamese place in Regina for good. I won't be going anywhere else. Please do keep in mind that in many Asian styled restaurants, it is customary for you to raise your hand for service. Do not expect them to come to you automatically. It is just the way things are done. No complaints at all with the service at all.
