Review Thai Basil - Regina

Saydlynne Reinhardt
Good food in the past, however when we ordered lastnight (October 31st 2021) I received a staple in my sweet and sour pork. This is truly unacceptable, your kitchen staff need to be more cautious about what they're handling around food. How does a staple end up in the pork? I'm glad I saw it before I ate it. They're only open for limited hours in the evening so I can't even call to advise them. Please be careful if you're ordering from here . 🙏 Update, under new management hasn't changed the staple issue. How does this happen twice? April 13th 2022.

New menu, new ownership? Some items have changed and find they are not as much to our liking as the former. Thai veg spring roll definitely not as good as former. Missed the chicken balls in our group dinner. Pineapple sweet & sour pork had no pineapple. Ginger beef was dry and a bit tough. Really miss the old recipes.

Didn’t know there was new owners. What a disappointment from previous owners. We had a jem here that’s lost. They are very stingy with the food now. Had mild pad Thai and there was no spice at all in it. Also had combination dinner D. Thai spring roll was horrible no chicken in the vegetable chicken and the sweet and sour pork had an off taste to it. The other owners made the best. Hate pineapple and red and green peppers in my sweet and sour pork which has it now. I think I’ll be looking for another place. Or find where the previous owners went. So sad.

Rude and Terrible customer service. Order took 1.5 hours. Was not hot and fresh... chunks of slime in the veggies and I almost threw up. ..and fish tasting broccoli. Old broccoli. Some Old tasting pieces of chicken in the sweet and sour chicken. . Ugh. Gross. Don't recommend.

The salt and pepper shrimp was amazing! Wonderful attentive service!

Disclaimer Edit: the old review is for the old Thai Basil. The new Angkor North (which is now the name of this resto), we have only tried at the end of the pandemic restrictions and we’re not really impressed. 3/5 stars we think. The portions are more generous than the old Thai Basil but the quality of taste is not up to par. It’s still good though for generic Asian cuisine tbh. Old Thai Basil: This is our go-to place for Thai cuisine in Regina. We’ve been to many other Thai resto in the city and find the authenticity of Thai Basil very refreshing. They use good cuts of meat and we find that the food is always less oily and the vegetables fresher compared to others. The beef hot pot surprisingly has enough fat for flavour but it’s been trimmed and the bean cake hot pot is generous with the tofu and the seafood. All other menu items is also very well recommended!

Had take out when new menu / new owners and found it not very good, had it again yesterday hoping it would be better and sadly not, lack of flavor and quality. Disappointed I will have to find a new favorite place, won't order again

I have been always ordering the jumbo prawn dish for years. My husband and I love your food. I see you are now open again for lunch. Please bring back your jumbo pawn dish it was one of my favourites. I have gone to Angkor since the east open it s doors …. Best Chinese food in the city.

Was there last night and we were the only table. We ordered green curry chicken and beef panang. From the time we ordered until the food came out was about 2 minutes, which I thought was super weird.

I’ve never had green curry like this before. It was more grey, flavourless and overall extremely boring. By far the worst green curry we’ve ever had. The only redeeming quality was the grilled egg plant in it, which was really good.

The panang was a bit better but still pretty bland. Decent amount of (low quality) beef. Not the worst I’ve had but far from great. I don’t think we’ll be back.

My family shared the shanghai noodles, thai basil boneless basa fish, and special bean cake hot pot.
The shanghai noodles was good but needs a little more seasoning (but can be easily fixed with some soy sauce).
My family LOVES the thai basil boneless basa fish! All-time favourite dish! Perfect amount of flavour. The fish is battered and fried to perfection, then topped with a thick coconut curry sauce. What I love about this dish is that the batter on the fish doesn't get soggy from the sauce (unless you take it home and reheat it). The texture of the battered fish and sauce is consistent throughout your entire meal. If you like fish then be sure to try this dish!
The final dish we tried was the special bean cake hot pot. Its loaded with meat/seafood and vegetables. Everything in the dish was perfectly cooked and had nice textures all-around. I found the sauce to be a little bland but not surprising for a hot pot dish (but you can add soy sauce and hot sauce if you want). The slight blandness didn't bother me as long as the seafood and vegetables aren't overcooked then I'm happy.
The service was great! The restaurant was quite busy but our server made sure he constantly checked up on us.

Update:
we went there recently and tried the pad thai, which I found to be very fishy in taste and smell (too much fish sauce) and it didn't really have that slight sweetness that pad thais should have (combo of sweet, spicy, with a slight citrus flavour). It was edible but I probably wouldn't get it again. I also didn't like the vietnamese rolls. Very greasy (that's expected) and just loaded with carrots..not how vietnamese rolls are traditionally made. It should've had more than glass noodles and carrots in them. We also ordered the basil basa fish (again) and once again, it was perfectly cooked.

Will be back but a very mixed review. My husband ordered the garlic chicken, he liked it a lot. Their chicken & veggies were the best I've ever had! The lemon chicken was very sweet. Spring rolls were quite greasy and fried rice was bland. All around good, maybe just work on a few of these things and it would be hitting it out of the park! Lots of selection and very nice costumer service.

Came here with my family Feb 28/16 (5 of us, all 20-55 years old) we ordered the dinner for 6 with an extra plate of deep fried shrimp.
Food was fast to come and the waitress was very frequent in filling water glasses. Lots of food, large servings, we each were able to have the first plate and then fill up again, with more to take home!

Our favourites were the ginger beef, not too spicy, and very well cooked. Pad tai, nicely spicy, and huge amount. And the spring rolls!

I will defiantly come here again!

Delicious Pad Thai and peanut sauce! Close to home and great quality for what you pay. Very clean and modern inside! Will definitely be back.

June 1, 2016

Just had supper here again tonight and the food was great, the staff were also really nice. Never a disappointment!

June 24, 2016

Had dinner here again tonight, the spicy Pad Thai and Thai spring rolls were excellent, the server was really nice and knowledgeable, will come here again and again.

Tasty, reasonably priced and very quick food. Spring rolls were dripping with grease last time, that was the only downside. Great pad Thai..

Ordered take out "combination dish A" and it was pretty good. You get a lot of food for 15 bucks. You will be full and have left overs which is always a plus.

We went there for supper. I had one of the noodle bowls and it was fine. The restaurant is nice decorated. Very modern and none of those strange carved Chinese pictures.

We often go there. The staff are always quick and pleasant. The food comes quickly and we've never had a bad meal. Hard to get parking. You usually have to walk from the Home Depot parking lot.

Very disappointed. Food quality has gone down hill dramatically. Will not order from here again.

Terrible. We ordered 3 dishes for take out which cost 45.00. Yikes first of all! The ginger beef was dry, tough and bland. Chicken chow mein was just nasty and smelled as bad as it tasted. Deep fried shrimp...too much batter too little shrimp. The spring rolls were tasteless and to be honest everything tasted the same....awful!!! We ordered from there because our usual SR kitchen was closed as they must be taking a well deserved vacation. To sum this all up...we won't be ordering from there again.

Bland, tasteless. We ordered three dishes and requested no MSG as they offer on the menu. We were told they will not add "extra MSG" but there is MSG in there food already. Our order all came covered in the same watered down red sauce. The Pad Thai was just noodles and grated cauliflower !!?, no sweet or spicy flavours. The Szechuan beef was all celery and onions with the same red sauce. Everything was bland and tasteless. A complete waste of money, skip this place.

NEVER EVER GO THERE-OWNER ARROGANT ,STALE FOOD. We went to this restaurant second time after 1 year- thinking it has same quality of food, but the quality has decreased tremendously. We ordered section D of their combo-without pork and they said will increase chicken mixed vegetable quantity-they increased vegetable quantity only. The chicken fried rice on the plate was stale and unpalatable. When we complained about it, they took the food away and gave us the full bill without any replacement. We agreed to pay 50% as we hardly ate out of that plate- the owner started shouting at us and said no body has ever complained about his food and that we should never come back to his restaurant ever. We threw the bill money at his face and left the place.
So, guys if you ever don't like the food there, never complain or else be prepared to face the OWNER'S rude and arrogant behaviour..

Fantastic food & service... Best Thai food in the NW of yqr...

Horrible. 86% like? What were they ordering? The restaurant is clean, and the staff is nice, but the food is bland and oily. Go to Siam!

Burnt noodles =(. I decided to try the Vegetable Chow Fun with Beef. I think it's made with fresh rice noodles but I could be wrong. The noodles were clumped together at the bottom of the dish and would sort of mush apart as I pulled them up, they were definitely over cooked and burnt in some places. I also had the Vietnamese Spring Rolls and they were good but were mostly made up of carrots. I've had way better at other restaurants.

It wasn't busy at all it was completely empty in the restaurant and I ordered around 3 to avoid the dinner rush so it just sort of surprises me as to why they didn't remake the noodles for me cause I'm sure they noticed they were over cooked. I will never go back here again.

Incredible meal and fantastic prices. Probable the best meal we have had in the last year. Very good service, and very reasonable pricing.

Had number 87 noodle bowl... Was good, large portion ( to muchh for me to finish), competitive prices. I use peanut sauce instead of fish sauce and I found the peanut sauce a little tangy but still alright

Great value, great taste!!!. Two hungry girls ate lunch on Sunday afternoon. We both had the Rice Vermichelli bowls with spring rolls the one with 3 kinds of meat, It was absolutely delicious. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. One hungry girl had the the Wonton soup which was extremely flavorful. The other hungry girl had Pork and Shrimp fresh rolls. The peanut sauce was very strong and not watered down like most other places in the city. The meal for 2 people came to approximately $30. Great value.

The service was fast and friendly with the waiter offering to fill our water glasses several times. The decor is simple but very classy.

We will definitely be coming back.

Standard Asian food. Nothing special that makes this place stands out. Standard run of the mill Asian food

Best Deep Fried Ginger Beef in Town!. After living for 10 years in the Capital City of Deep Fried Ginger Beef - Calgary, and moving back to Regina 17 years ago, I have been on the search for decent deep-fried ginger beef. I finally found it at Thai Basil. It was still lacking something that I can't put a finger on, but it's the best I've found so far. I will definitely go back there again!

Thai Basil is in a two-way tie for first place for the BEST Southeast Asian in Regina with it's sister restaurant, Angkor. No other restaurant even comes CLOSE.

Pineapple fried rice, ginger beef, Thai cashew nut chicken, almond prawns, hot & sour soup are all big favorites.

Wonderful food. Love.

If you are looking for authentic Thai food this is not the restaurant to eat. We were exctied about another Thai food restaurant but we were very disappointed, it is just another Chinese food restaurant. It has a few Thai dishes but mostly the same old chicken balls fried rice and a few Vietnamese dishes. Very disappointed.

Delicious Experience. I was visiting from Toronto a few days ago and happened to drop by this restaurants with a couple friends.
The place was nice, very clean, and had a fresh feeling to it.
In terms of price, it was reasonable for the variety of food offered.
I especially enjoyed their Coca Cola Chicken, I've never tasted anything like it in Toronto!
All in all, it was a delicious experience.

Excellent Asian Cuisine. We ate here a couple weeks ago and it was all very good and I plan to go back or order take-out.
Building: It is nice and clean inside, disappointed to see that its setup small restaurant style with the typical 4 seater tables. I like private booths and tiered sections, I feel that gives a place character.
Service: we had 2 different servers, one was excellent and the other was so quiet that he sucked. But I have high expectations they will get it going.
Price: Reasonable
Food: Was excellent! Tom Yum Koong was spicy and tasty. Spring rolls were....just spring rolls but good.
Lemon Chicken is the best I have ever had in the city! BBQ duck was a nice treat and very good. And we really enjoyed the Pad Woon Sen! wasn't greasy or sloppy, just a really nice dish.
I overall really liked the place, The only Cons for me are
- No music playing so you can hear everyone's conversations
- MSG (bad bad food additive!)
- Seating (old school dinner style and squishy when full)

Great new Asian food option. A bit more upscale than most Regina Asian digs - could be the fact that it is brand new - very clean - lots of parking

Food is great - selection of Thai (tastes quite authentic) - Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese

Menu laid out nicely - prices reasonable - friendly staff

Very tasty - definitely recommend this place - glad to have another restaurant in North Regina
