Review Restaurant Albacore - Quebec City

Maya
First of all, food was great. I ordered the double calamari. The fried calamari was basic but everything else in the plate tasted good. I especially liked the calamari steak, it was tender and delicious. My family also ordered the Sea and the fried cod. Everyone agreed their food tasted great. Now the service.. Everyone but our server was great. One of the first thing he said to us was, "English?" And when we said yes, he said "ok good". Not sure if he was being ignorantly racist. We declined to get drinks because we just had lemonades before getting to the restaurant and our server rudely put away our wine glasses, without even asking. We also declined appetizers and again, he rudely took our appie forks without asking. Despite the good food and the amazing service from the other staff, we did not enjoy our dinner because of our server and we would probably not come back. We paid that much, we expect a decent service. Instead, we felt judged and the experience almost ruined our whole Quebec trip. I wish I asked for his name so I could call him out here.

Extremely friendly staff, took the time to answer all our questions, even though we didn't speak French. Amazing views of the city from the outside seating, food was plentiful - the servings are pretty big, and innovative. We tried the oysters, taco and burrata, followed by the calamari and cod with gnocchi - all hit the spot The drinks were quite well balanced. Would definitely recommend, and try to fit in again before we leave.

I really wanted to love this place. It was one of the restaurants I wanted to try in Quebec City. I must say, even though the food was good, the service was terrible. I have a slight suspicion that our server was racist. I would have given one star if it wasn't for the food. We reserved a table for five on June 17. The table wasn't ready and we had to wait a few minutes to be seated (I didn't mind because the hostess was very polite about it). When we were seated our server came to ask if we wanted to get anything to drink almost immediately and didn't give us enough time to think about it. He also assumed that we didn't speak English because we were all Asian. Afterwards, the rest of the dinner was basically a joke. Our server would put away things like the wine glasses and forks when we didn't order wine or appies in a very rude manner - almost like a tantrum. Was that really necessary? He could have put that all away later. What if we changed our minds? Aside from the rude server, the rest of the staff was very nice and accommodating and was the only reason why we even gave a tip at all. Food-wise, it was what I expected. I ordered The Sea and it was really good. I couldn't enjoy my food because of the service but even with the terrible service I can't even be bias and say the food tasted bad. It's that good. I honestly would want to come back again because they change their menu and everything we ordered was really good but the server was just so unbelievably rude. If service is something you care about in your dining experience, I would probably rethink going here - just cause you might get inconsistent service. The food is good though.

The soup was very good, but it was the only dish that tastes good. The ravioli has a weird filling. And the most weird dish was the fried chicken with lobster. I mean, why? The lobster was cold and the fried chicken was warm. Doesn’t make sense. The worst part is that the waiter doesn’t let us in while it starts raining and kept us sitting in the patio. I can’t believe that. Anyway I want to give one star, but two stars just because the soup was good.

I had made a reservation but upon arrival, realized it was for the next Sunday evening. Nicholas, who greeted me, was able to kindly squeeze me in as the restaurant just opened. I had come during happy hour and the oysters were on special until 1800h. From my understanding Albacore is known for large portions thus he suggested only either an appetizer or main from the two items I had inquired about, which I appreciated. I ended up going with the recommended item and it was paired with great drinks. Upon reading reviews, I realized Albacore is highly via reservations and walk-ins are not always available. With my mistake on the reservation, I am very grateful it could have been accommodated that day and it does not happen all the time - thank-you, Albacore & Nicholas!

One of my favorite restaurant in Quebec. Don't expect a super fancy decor as they are definitely putting their money on the food quality! They will propose very nice wine pairing with your meal and you should indeed go for their suggestions! I revisited Albacore and I can confirm you still feel the passion in all plates!

W O W ! How could I explain how I feel about that place ... Sexy, Fun & Barolo. It is all about feeling and texture.

I'd originally made reservations for dinner at six o'clock, but I was so exhausted from walking around the city all day that I arrived at 5:15pm and asked if I could eat earlier. No problem, and I was whisked to a seat at the bar where I could watch the bartender at his métier. Everyone was very kind when I requested to speak French instead of English (they switched back and forth effortlessly). I had a dozen super-delicious oysters with a shallot mignonnette, then an exquisite beef tartare, which unfortunately I simply couldn't finish. It's a happening little place - most diners appeared to be in their 20s and 30s. (A fitting sticker for me was on the wine fridge - "I'm too old for this sh*t.") A unique, yummy dining experience! Definitely recommend!
