My favourite place for Mexican food that is close to home. Excellent hospitality and awesome food.
I've been eating food made by Carlos and his wife a few times a year since I was a child (well over a decade). It has always been a treat. Great food and they treat you like family.
Go Here often and always get wonderful food and great service! The margaritas are wonderful and the enchiladas are my go to dish. Would recommend a visit here if you are in the area.
Great spot!. We went to Charlie's for the first time in ages tonight. The place was decently busy, about six tables were full when we walked in around 7:30 p.m. We ordered chips, salsa, and guacamole to start. The guacamole had a great lime-y flavour. I decided to try the Mexican soda. I recommend it! The mandarin flavour was tasty and not sweet at all, like a mix between Orangina and Crush. I ordered the beef tacos. It was six mini corn tortillas, spicy beef, and all the usual sides (green salsa, red salsa, cilantro, etc.).
Charlie was there and super friendly, as always. He's a character! He had time to chat a bit to us in throughout the meal, and it was nice to feel so at home. Port Moody could use more mom-and-pop places like this! Go for the kitschy ambience, tasty food, and friendly service! You won't find anything else like Charlie's in the Tri-Cities.
Good food. Not breathtaking but very good Mexican outside of downtown Vancouver.
Slow service and slow response when it's busy. When it's dead it's a little better.
I've waited 10 min for a menu and 20 min for a drink before (tonight as I type this).
They try their best it's just understaffed sometimes.
Overall a good experience just don't arrive too hungry or thirsty it may be a few more minutes than you would like.
I don't know what people who didn't like this place are talking about!!! I went with my boyfriend and his parents tonight and every dish we had was fantastic!!! We had the combo plate one his mom had the chimichanga and his dad had the chicken enchiladas!!! All were super Delish and filling!! Even the chips, salsa, and guac were fantastic:) we will definitely be back to Charlie's, who was there and he was super friendly and fun with all the tables as well!
Re: soup or premium crackers. For you Canadian guys and gals that don't know about real and 100% authentic mexican food, let me explain you that white flour soup crackers, or premium plus crackers are to accompany ceviche at all times.
If you get a ceviche without crackers, then you are not eating at a 100% mexican restaurant, but at a TexMex or other Mexican-wannabe place or franchise.

Awesome, authentic, Mexican food for a great price. My favorites are the tortilla soup which is hearty and delicious, as well as the Tacos al Pastor which come de-constructed for you to assemble at the table. Juicy pork and fixings. Service was also quick and friendly. Highly recommended.
Okay so my first time here. I'm from Toronto but come to Vancouver for business. I loooooove Mexican food its my all time favorite. Now Charlies I started off with my fav app ceviche. I was in shock when they brought it to me with two wrapped packs of premium plus crackers! Wtf! So I asked in confusion to waitress if they ran out of tortilla chips? She said no that I can order them. Wtf! I handed her bag the crackers. Said its an insult to Mexican food serving these crackers with such a delightful and delicious dish. The ceviche was great tho. She came back minutes later and brought me a bowl of tortilla chips she said the kitchen wanted me to have them. That wasn't the point to score free chips... I'm still shocked they actually think that's authenticity to serve premium 2 pack crackers! Come on, people step up to the plate. The food is awesome. Don't screw up your rep for something minor that you can quickly change.
Great funny, the owners a funny guy. But be prepared for a very long wait for your meal if there's more than two other tables.
I've been eating here for years.... I first ate at Charlie's Cafe when I was probably about 5 years old. I've always liked going there to eat: the food is consistently delicious and the service has always been great. The atmosphere is very charming too. And of course, Charlie himself is really nice and has always come over to chat every time I've been there. Oh, and I LOVE the Chicken Mole Poblano: the sauce is thick, rich and velvety and tastes incredible.
