Review Lucky Star Chinese Food - Ottawa

Genevieve Rice
Decided to try this place after seeing several great reviews on my Orleans Foodies group. I have to agree! Ordered online through their website for pickup an hour later and when we arrived early, they were still making my food, which means it wasn't sitting around (a good thing!). Portions were generous and the food was delicious, not at all greasy. The Egg Foo Yung in particular was excellent, with delicious gravy. Egg rolls were tasty too! Thanks for a great dinner!

Lucky Star Chinese is fantastic! I love this place. Food pricing is competitive with alternate Chinese food locations: super fast service, kind & humble people. Always a pleasure doing business with you guys. I will see you again lol 👍🏼

Eaten here several times - it is consistently fresh, hot and delicious. I find their combo plates a great deal as they are priced right and offer enough food that you’ll have left overs!

Depending how busy the wait time is about 10 minutes Goodies are tightly wrapped up in a paper bag and hot when you get home. Each different serving has it's own container with locking lid. Dinner for two can be eaten over 2 nights as they provide ample food. Best guy's in town.

My go-to Chinese take-out over a long relationship. My favourite standard meal comprises Won Ton Soup with its huge pork-filled dumplings, juicy Curried Veggies, cashew-laded saucy Kung Pau and other speciality, General Tao chicken. Of course, the feast begins with the stellar Spring Rolls, handmade, packed with crisp veggies, and perfectly crisp. Kudos to the woman who whips up these out-of-this world morsels fresh, for each order ... could make a meal on them alone!! Delivery is speedy and piping hot. Defer the usual food additive MSG. Lucky Star meals are flavour perfection in these and other dishes I have ordered. LS kindly give me chopsticks when I ask. Courteous and dedicated workers from my years of experience. Wish them a prosperous 2023!

I drive from Barrhaven to Orleans just to get food from here. Portion sizes are excellent, but it's the flavor of the food that keeps us coming back. It's worth the trip. It is still our most favorite Chinese food restaurant in Ottawa. Our whole family loves it. It's just for takeaway though. No dining in.

I recently ordered from this local family owned restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by the food and service. Definitely reccomend their singapore fried noodles if you like curry based food. The price point, quality of food and attention to special notes when u placed my order was on point.

Such good Chinese food! We've been going here for years. Note: it's take out only. We've never had issues with our orders, the service is always good and the food is amazing! Favorite dish is their broccoli and beef. I have shellfish allergies and have not had any issues but they do have shellfish in the kitchen. This is where we order from when we have groups and they love it too!

I went on what is probably their busiest day of the year, New Years Eve. The staff worked themselves to the bone and yet they stayed positive and did their best. They would let you know how long the wait was so if you thought it was too long you could leave before ordering. Well done Lucky Star. Oh and I enjoyed my meal.

I've been in love with Lucky Star Chinese food for the past 30 years. Seriously one of the best Chinese food takeout restaurants in Orleans. fantastic egg rolls. All the other food is pretty good too. The only downside but this restaurant is trying to get an order on New year's Eve be prepared for 2 to 3 hour wait. Overall however the great restaurant.

Really good Chinese food. Probably the best in Orleans.

This is my go to Chinese place in the area. Delivery service is very fast, food is always fresh and piping hot. Great service.. Been ordering from here for 12 years and never disappointed.

Disorganized. Ordered on line and received on-line confirmation. Arrived at pick-up time and was asked for phone number. After a wait of 15 minutes was asked if there was an alternate number. After another 15 minutes I asked about my order and was told it was in progress. After 30 minutes asked again and was assured that it was almost ready. After 20 minutes and several inquiries was asked what my order was as they did not have it and would I like to reorder. I wasted 1 1/2 hours being led to believe that my order was in their system and they were making efforts to have my order ready only to find they could not find it. Tell me the truth up front that you do not have my on-line order when I arrived and I would not be writing this review of to comment on what appears to be a totally disorganized ordering system. Have been a regular customer but will NEVER order from them again.

Ridiculously bad customer service. I have ordered several times from this restaurant and had reasonable success
After a 2 hour wait today I was informed they can't deliver they are too busy and wouldn't be able to fill my order
They were looking at my order and have my phone number but lacked the consideration to place a call and notify my of the situation
And when pressed offered nothing but an insincere apology sorry we are too busy
Not the first time they screwed up my order but definitely the last
Don't take orders you can't fulfil

Great value. One of my favorite places in Orleans - have been eating here since I was a kid

Never again. Ordered tonight at 5 pm for delivery. Our bill was over $60 and they said delivery at 5:45. Had to call twice more and it finally showed up at 6:30. My kids were starving, we were all upset and they thought they were gracious giving us 10% off. What a joke. When we opened our dinner, the chow mien noodles were missing that we got charged for and most of the food was cold. Driver said there were lots of accidents on Innes. Lame excuse there is no snow and I don't care.

Brutal. I will be calling Asia wok from now on.

Greasy food. Have been going to Lucky Star for years and was my favourite spot to get Chinese in Orleans until recently. The last two times we ordered the food was extremely greasy. Had to dab the egg rolls in paper towel to get rid of some of the grease. The quality of the food has lost its value. The egg rolls now taste like fried sausage bites. Defiantly will no longer recommend lucky star and will try different local Chinese restaurants.

Been eating here since childhood. I have eaten Lucky Star take out since I was a kid, and it always tastes great. I will definitely continue to do so since I am pretty much addicted to their food!

Great Chinese takeout place. I've been going here for a couple of years now and always the same great quality. I have found that the food isn't as greasy as other places I've been to in the past. I highly recommend the open ended egg rolls.

Nobody Does it Better. Our family has been getting our take out from Lucky Star practically since it opened. It has always been consistent and of a quality nearly to what you would get at the better restaurants on Somerset.

Consistent high quality, good selection and excellent service. We have kept it as our go to place even after moving out past Trim.

I agree with Coolgurl, the bad comments must be for a different shop. There is Lucky Key on Trim and from the couple of times we bought there no question that they live up (or down) to those comments.

To EXPENSIVE. Food is not up to par, and is WAY to EXPENSIVE

Didn't have luck with Lucky Star. We ordered 3 dishes and the price was $50.00. We were hoping the food was worth the price but we were very disappointed. The food is very bland and had an off taste to it. The General Tsao Chicken was impossible to bite through, we think it was old chicken, the beef dish was very bland and the egg rolls were so-so. The only thing dish that was good was the steamed rice which was free.
We live in Orleans and we will never recommend or order from this establishment again.

Don't believe the bad reviews, this place is great!!!. I don't know where the bad reviews are coming from, but those individuals MUST be referring to a different place! Lucky Star has been and always will be my go-to Chinese takeout spot. Always consistently delicious food, friendly service with some of the employees who have been working there since I was a child. So what if the food has a bit of grease? It's Chinese takeout for goodness sake!!! The egg rolls are the best I've ever tasted, so I don't get why people are knocking those either. Do you honestly inspect every molecule of every item of food you eat?? It's really not as scary looking as some people have described, just your standard egg roll, and they are delicious.

All in all, give this place a chance! Excellent food, and friendly staff if you treat them with respect.

Worst Chines Food. This is the worst Chinese Food, as a matter of fact the worst food I have ever tasted.

The SWEET AND SOUR PORK was flat long pieces of tough material. Still unable to determine what type of meat it could be. It appear to be food reheated a number of times with a thick red sauce. No pineapple. Pieces of uncooked carrot, and lots of green and red pepper. The EGGS ROLLS, I don't know what is inside, a grainy substance don't know if meat or vegetable. The CHICKEN BALLS, batter with uncooked taste. 1st chicken balls my family didn't like. The LEMON CHICKEN pieces of thick meat with the batter falling off. The WHITE RICE , overcooked, no flavor. The CHICKEN WINGS , refried God knows how many times and had salt sprinkled over them.

Why is this restaurant still open? The food is awefullllllllllllllll. What a waste of money. I think I am due a refund. I would't even request it, because I know will not get it. Just will not shop at this restaurant again.

Great Chinese food and great service. The food is always hot, fresh and consistent. The combo plates are a great deal with good portion sizes. They also make a great won ton soup.

NO RECOMMENDATION FROM ME!!!. We ordered a dinner for 6 and food it an extremely inadequate amount of food for the 6 of us. Good thing I ordered 3 other dishes. We were very disappointed as it was a special dinner. When calling the restaurant back to complain they pretty much laughed at me and said they'd never had a complaint. Well here's one!!! Terrible, awful attitude of person on phone It was our first experience with this place and will be the last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEVER EVER EAT THERE!!!!! So I call for delivery and the food comes to my door and it is 10$ more than what the guy on the phone told me. I had to call the restaurant at least 6 times an threaten to call the bbb on them to return my food. The guy asked me if I can come in with the food but my car was in the repairs shop so about 2 hour later the driver shows up gives me my money. I did not get to see the food but the bag was covered in grease. Nasty!!! I have eaten there once.... There egg roll is awful !! It does not even taste like an egg roll. Never ever again and for those reading this still questioning if they should eat there the answer is nooo wayyy.

One up on the rest. Lucky Star has been my go-to Chinese take out restaurant for years. I've tried quite a few of the others in Orleans but they are just not as good and I've never eaten at any other place more than once or maybe twice.

The portions at Lucky Star are large and the prices are fair. The food is always hot and fresh. If you like General Tso's chicken, Lucky Star's is the best I've ever eaten; the chicken is crispy and served in thin slices, something I prefer greatly over the chunky pieces you usually get, and the sauce is just right. One of my favourite dishes is the Almond Guy Ding. Again, the sauce is divine and the veggies in the dish are fresh and delicious. The wonton soup, fried rice, and garlic spare ribs are great too, among the other things I've tried. Hubby likes the beef dishes (such as beef with green peppers). I have never been disappointed with a dish from Lucky Star.

The combination plates are a great value as well. For around $11 (can't remember exactly off the top of my head) you get enough food to easily share with someone or make into two meals for yourself.

That all being said, I find that whether or not people enjoy Chinese restaurants has a lot to do with how the food is prepared and that's a personal preference. So don't take my word for it, try it and decide for yourself!

Always consistent. Generous portions. I've been going for years. On large orders specify you want more rice or make them separate orders. My brother in law comes from Gatineau. It's that good. Wish they had a sit down restaurant. Owner , he could smile more.
Price is good, good value.

Great food! Not greasy at a.... Great food!
Not greasy at all.

These guy are bosses! Unreal quality and prompt service. They deliver 10 k to my house in less than 45 mins. Fresh fun food for parties or late night cravings! Try the young chow fried rice!
Alley
Terrible! 4.5 hours later we still have not gotten our order. We told them to forget it. Not sure why this place is rated so highly. The screwed up our order 3 times. We will never order from this place again.

We eat here quite often and always enjoy it. They recently changed their containers which I really don't like. Watch for spills on the way home!

Fantastic.............. We order from the Lucky Star approximately 5-8 times a year, for holidays, birthdays and any othe special time, we have not been disappointed yet, the food always arrived hot and usually delivered between 45-60 minutes which is not bad for this city, The flavours and the textures of the different dishes were always amazing and I will say that we are very particular about food as well as our guests, if you haven't tried them yet you should, order some Crispy Beef "YUMMY"
