Review So Good Restaurant - Ottawa

Officer Maryjane
Food is great. We purchased: 183- Beef in black pepper sauce 278- Chicken w orange flavour 280- General Tao 140- Mixed veggies w fried noodles. Everything was good except 278 & 183 in my opinion... Beef way too chewy🤐... Orange chicken.. doesnt taste like chicken🤢. Theres too much rice vs the amount of meat.

I really enjoyed the food here. Perfect portioned food, fresh out of oven, and great location. I will definitely come back for more food!

Ordered some takeout recently within 15 minutes of close (2100) and everything seemed to have been prepared fresh. Pictured is 107 on the menu, flat rice noodle with beef or chicken (ordered chicken) - it is also combined with Asian veggies which tasted fresh. The noodles had great flavour and felt like the ingredients were very well combined relative to some other Asian fast food places where all the ingredients seem separate. This particular dish uses the “So Good” sauce, which I believe tastes like a cross between garlic and general tao, very flavourful and a tiny bit spicy. Would order this dish again. 4 stars rather than 5 as this dish was $15, a bit on the expensive side for a basic noodle dish.

Classic hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant. Offers various regional Chinese dimmed and Thai. Has some dishes not usually seen (eggplant in black bean sauce. Menu could have been more concise ( I. r. Instead of listing four identical dishes with different meats, name the dish, and then show the meat!/seafood choices abailable forir. ) Would making understanding the vast menu easier to appreciate.

Very good service and food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the chicken with Chinese green which is bok choy and Chinese greens which I love it was with garlic and a chicken broth well seasoned it was delicious fresh chicken was so juicy and tender. My two friends on the other hand, didn't enjoy some of their food although I didn't taste it one of them ordered the spicy beef with rice and onions and he said the beef was too cooked and the dumplings he said had too much meat in it. My other friend said is combination plate, the spare ribs were not tender. I wanted to be specific to help the owners cuz I really want to go back and they just left a review with no details which is not too helpful. They used to go there and they liked it before so I hope they will come back with me.

Weirdly GOOD! I must’ve walked past this place 100 times and it was my first time trying it! Everything looked wild to me at the beginning, then strangely enough, every dish hit the right spots! It’s very good!

Do not miss this restaurant! The name fits perfectly with the quality of food. IT IS SO GOOD. The service is wonderful, helpful and courteous. The small seating area can accomodate about 40 people, it is very busy over lunch and dinner. Do yourself a favour and make it a point to make this place your favourite. I have been coming here for over 15 years.

Great restaurant, really nice staff working there. Very fast and a ton of options. The Thai soup is the best there! The sauce is a little too thick from corn starch. Would be back to visit. Can accommodate big groups and also takes AMEX.

Best Chinese food in all of ottawa! Must try the Szechuan crispy beef and their sweet tofu cashew dish. So damn good omg I could just eat it forever. All of their noodle dishes are delicious and their lemon chicken and dumplings are to die for. Also the owner and staff are so nice!

What a find, we feel so lucky to have found this place. Amazing food we had crispy spicy beef the spicy vegetables in peanut sauce both were outstanding . We also had Malaysian fried rice and Kung pow chicken which were good. The egg rolls are fantastic. The restaurant is good size and was full when we went approx. 6pm Friday. The waitresses are right there when you need something . And owner couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. We will certainly be back.

Everyone raves about this place. And the the name of this restaurant is far from humble. But I tried it and was extremely disappointed. Poor service, cleanliness was questionable. I wasn't impressed at all with the taste and quality of the food. I will not be returning.
Chris
Took my girlfriend for dinner and we weren't disappointed. Food was SO GOOD, but ambience was a little awkward. Cheap, so thats a plus. Will definitely be returning.
D
fried rice was decent, 6/10......Shanghai noodles with shrimp was very bland, not even the soy sauce or sriracha could save it. Kung pao chicken....the chicken was overcooked and fried. too crispy. and there were pieces that were way overly salty. the hot and sour soup was the real mvp here. and why no hot oil? NO HOT OIL

The food was good but I personally thought that it was very noisy, not very clean and no atmosphere whatsoever. The service was also very average.

Husband and I went in search of good Chinese food in our new city - Ottawa. With a great china town we didn't think we would have a hard time. This is a relatively small spot, with good atmosphere. The service was good and helpful with menu selections. We ordered 3 dishes: spicy beef, Malaysian fried rice, and a beef noodle dish (name escapes me). The serving size was excellent, the price very reasonable, and the taste great. We enjoyed all three dishes and the leftovers! We will definitely will return. Would definitely recommend.

Sooooooo gooooooood! Always get Wu si chicken or veggies and salt and pepper tofu! Haven't been disappointed yet always tasty and for a good price!

Items tend to always be greasy and overcooked. The sweet and sour chicken balls have been rancid on two separate occasions and when I went to return them the last time, I was given a hard time and told that there isn't anything wrong with them and that no refund will be given. We won't be back!

Great service, friendly worker. Food was good. Ordered the noodle with spicy beef and hunan dumplings.
Noodles, were a tad bit over cooked but passible, good amount of tender beef chunks, not spicy to me at all, soup I find to be missing something. Pickled mustard greens was used to top the dish. I'd give that noodle soup 3/5.
Hunan dumplings were well cooked, basic meat recipe, sauce was possibly hoisin based, it was salty but the dumplings were not drowned in the sauce because the dumplings were placed on top of the sauce. Green onion used to top the dish were dry, fresh would of made it a lot better. Not spicy at all.
So Good Restaurant lies just at the point where Somerset Street West begins to slope down towards Preston. I have passed by it many times and thought I should try it sometime but a friend recently recommended it to me and, as it turned out, her praise was well-founded….

Talk about great service. The owner sat down with us and explained some of the varieties (on the rather large menu). We followed some of the suggestions and the four of us shared several dishes and were satisfied enough to come back soon !

The first time I tried "So Good" - it was more like "so not good" but after a few years, and seeing a facebook post about their salt and pepper tofu, I had to try it again. The restaurant is small, it has a home-kitchen kind of feel to it and the menu is huge - so many items to choose from what to choose? (Please don't come here and order Vietnamese food though - you can just cross that section out, so that narrows down your options;P). The salt and pepper tofu is quite good, it's not very spicy, has just a little bit of spice, and it's not over-fried either so you can actually taste the tofu inside. What's more is the food comes out in about 10 minutes and the service is quite efficient. So Good is not my first pick for a Chinese restaurant though, simply because there are many that are bigger and have the same quality/better food. For example today, I had the salt and pepper tofu from Ng's Cuisine and they certainly outdid So Good. But it's not so bad as I once thought it was.

Food is AMAZING. Lots of vegetarian and gluten-free options. The atmosphere is not so good. I'd recommend take-out only unless you aren't looking for ambience.

So Good can be sort of hit or miss - There weekend chef produces much better dishes than their week time chef(s). Pad Thai can sometimes be downright disgusting. On the plus side, they offer plenty of vegetarian dishes.

This place was recommended by an old co-worker. He said their general Tao's chicken was a real crowd pleaser. I gave them a shot, and I found a few things.

Firstly, everything was bland in comparison to what I am used to in chinese food. Nothing was bad, but nothing had any flavour either. I left not necessarily feeling disappointed, but not really feeling like it was a great meal either.

The service was very good & friendly though, but overall, I wouldn't recommend this place.

I came here with my parents, who *insisted* they weren't hungry enough to order a big meal. Well, by the time the food arrived, they thought "maybe I'll try just a bit" and then once they started to eat, they realized how great it was!

I was having a sesame beef craving, so I asked if they could use their sesame sauce from their chicken on the beef. Yep, no problem they said! It was quick to arrive and fantastic. SO GOOD!

We just ordered the sesame beef, spring rolls, and had some tea.
Hungry87
So not Good. Nothing much to say about this place. I didn't like any of it. The food was mediocre at most, the place is small and cramped and the service was ok. (That wouldn't bother me at all if the place had amazing food) Wouldn't go back, so many other better options.
Corarivers2012
Food is great - If you visit on the right day.. The title says it all! Food is completely mediocre during the week, but comes to life on Saturday and Sunday in the evenings. I wish it was more consistent during the week, as it has ample amounts of vegetarian options!

If you happen to visit during the weekend, I recommend the salt and pepper tofu, the green beans, and eggplant with tofu-cheese.

The owner, Peter, is quite a character and such a lovely man. He'll happily help you pick out menu items or help you if you happen to have a restrictive diet.

Overall, this is a good restaurant to go to if you, especially if you're in the company of people with different diets, children, or people that prefer milder asian dishes.

Sooooo Good. The place looks a bit run-down, but don't let that fool you. Everything I have tried there is amazing!!! I like their salt and pepper tofu, and wu see vegetable. I recommend to everyone with good taste. Friendly service as well
Discernante
Goodness. Owner Peter So has the right formula. No BS about trying to be fashionable. Even though the Wu Se chicken isn't what it used to be, it's still quite delicious, and I always get it anyway. Always a favourite place to re-visit.

Big, delicious portions. The restaurant is quite small, and gets really busy early into the evening - it's popular for a reason! The hunan dumplings were drool-worthy! Not being a big dumpling fan, I took a chance and ordered them and I'm very glad I did. The shanghai noodles were, well, shanghai noodles. They were very good, but nothing out of this world. The flat rice noodle with So Good sauce was extremely delicious, a bit spicy, but just enough to add a nice kick. The portions lasted us for two meals, and the prices were excellent. The restaurant could use a reno, and I hope whenever that happens, they add more tables to accommodate their popularity.
Chrissy
Try it you'll like it. Good food ( large serving, 1 plate can stretch for two) Really funny & friendly owner

Got take out last night, and I was really impressed! Portions were pretty large and at a reasonable price. We will definitely be back!

This was delicious, fast and bountiful! I will make this a my go to restaurant.

Great Selection and Food. This hole in the wall is a real gem. The food is excellent and priced very reasonably. I was a little concerned at first that the sheer number of options available on the menu would impinge on the quality of the resulting meals. I can satisfyingly report that it did not.
Jade D
Quite flavorable. I just feel that it's caked with salt, sugar and msg. The place could use a reno.
Cj
Small place. This chinese food has a more authentic taste than the other chinese restaurants in the area

Good Gluten Free Food. The food here is made fresh, and tasty. Priced right for the portion and served hot. Owner is nice and remembers us each time we go
VukQC
The restaurant itself is nothing to write about. Ot could do with some Renos. But the food is some of the best I have ever eaten, and NOT expensive. GO for the food.

One of my favourite restaurants in the city - period. I've been going to So Good for years and am still infatuated with it after all this time. Some of my favourite dishes include Malaysian fried rice, salt and pepper tofu, wu se chicken, spicy green beans and hunan dumplings. They have the best vegetarian spring roll I've found in the city. It will prompt you to say during your meal at least once, that is it 'so good'!

I first heard about this place back in 2006 by word of mouth and heard it was delicious. Well what I had heard was correct! This place might be small but the flavors are HUGE! I've been hooked to this place ever since. Their wu-se chicken is to die for! Do yourself a favor, if you enjoy Asian food, go to So good. You won't be disappointed. My only word caution is that you might be addicted to the food. :)

Really so good.... This place is unbelievable. I love love love it and always bring vegetarian friends who have just moved to Ottawa here. Gigantic menu, veggie and meat options, gluten free options. The ambiance is a little weird but the food more than makes up for it.
HungryCat
This place is so good for real!. Love the salt and pepper tofu!!!their menu is huge and they have lots of vegetarian choices too!!
the place is not huge tho so if you go with a crowd make sure you reserve a table( the biggest table has a lazy susan good for sharing :D)

My son and I are 100% gluten free eaters and are very hesitant to eat out. My mother and grandmother were in town and we decided to risk trying Chinese food in China town. I found this restaurant on Urban Spoon and were we ever happy!!! So accommodating to our needs but also to my mother who had given up on eating Chinese food because she qas always disappointed. She was amazed, she loved her food!!! We took everything home with us. The restaurant was small but cozy, it was also a little worn around the edges but clean and everyone was so helpfull. We will go back again for sure!!!
Grizzlybear117
One of my favourit restaurants in the city. Cant go wong with anything on the menu

To die for. The wu se chicken is one of the best dishes you can order at any restaurant in ottawa.
Bikeboy
Generous portions, good food, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere (casual eatery), reasonable prices, good menu.

Great Food!. This place was small, crowded, and use a make-over, however, the food and service was great!
I highly recommend the Salt & Pepper Tofu and the Pad Thai.

#95 is amazing dish

Soo gooddd. The crispy beef is seriously to die for.
Glebe-ite
Not good. The vermicelli was horrible. If I go back, I would try something else.
Jennie
So good..... While not a gluten free kitchen, So Good has a wide assortment of gluten free dishes and will gladly help with menu choices. My celiac sister was so excited to try it out and was not disappointed!
Dani Fraser
The Wu Se vegetable tasted like eating a bag of sugar. When I returned it the manager yelled across the restaurant. I doubt I will ever go back here.
Norco806
So good is not so good. One time while walking on sommerset I was interested by the cheesy and funny name for a restaurant. I hesitated to enter because of all the whiteness in the restaurant. I was right to think that way. It was good for canadian chinese but it was nothing like "real" chinese. The decor and service were also mediocre.
Evisou270
Cantonese food at its best. This restaurant may be small, but the flavour in the food is big, big, BIG! The Indonesian vermicelli noodles and hunan beef dishes are AMAZING! Owners are very nice, too. Would reccomend.
Downtownme
My new addiction!...... They're right....the "Salt and Pepper Deep-fried Tofu" is crunchy and wonderful! The "Wu-Se Chicken", however,....is "crack" to a food addict....we loved every morsel!! The "Sesame Beef" was highly recommended, but we haven't had a chance to sample yet.......next time. We also loved the "Thai Coconut Spicy Soup"...huge fresh mushroom slices, big luscious pieces of chicken and lemongrass.....it was the perfect antidote to the cold, wet weather that Ottawa night. The place is small and noisy....don't expect to have a private conversation....but, if you like a restaurant with a 'one big family' feel to it...you're home! The owner is a sweetheart....lots of good advice. The servers are fast and efficient. We'll be back.....
Carrie
Delicious!. Very, very good. Excellent place for vegetarians/vegans.

We had the salt and pepper tofu, the veggie shangai noodles, and eggplant in garlic sauce. Everything was excellent.

The actual restaurant is small and kind of dingy. If you are going during a busy time you probably want to make a reservation.

Best Chinese in Ottawa! Order the Hunan dumplings, crispy beef & chicken in peanut sauce... You will be happy:)
Daily Diva Doze
The food was ok.... Very small place, very noisy... Good for take out I guess

It's good, yes.

Solid restaurant, solid staff. Would recommend.

He spoke with pride about how he's been able to accommodate celiacs for a number of years, with no reported problems. Great to hear! But, how was the food, you ask? Well, awesome! The Fried Tofu with Pepper-Salt was highly addictive. Mmm! It was kinda like popc
