Talk about joie de vivre!
Every gluten free eater--whether they are new to the gluten free way of life or have been following a gluten free diet for years--has experienced the challenges of this dietary restriction at one time or another. It can be hard enough to source appropriate products from our local grocery stores, let alone try to find something appropriate on a restaurant menu. For years, unless we specifically chose to patronize health-conscious restaurants, it was either next to impossible to order a meal guaranteed to be gluten free or the options offered were so bland and unappealing that eating out lost its appeal.
Fortunately, things have gotten easier and easier for gluten free diners with every passing year. As awareness of gluten sensitivity has spread, so too have the options available to those of us who need to avoid gluten. The only thing that I have been completely unable to find is decadent, French-style pastries... Until now!
Not only is this the most impressive gluten free business I have ever been to in 25 years, with an incredible selection of sweets as well as gourmet food - the service was incredible and caring. They made my day. While on the patio enjoying my grilled sandwich I convinced others to come inside : )
So glad we discovered this place!! It was absolutely loaded with gluten free pastries and they have a large selection of lunch/dinner items and sandwiches. Everything we tried (cream eclair, gingerbread cookie, Nanaimo bar, lasagna, pizza, chocolate tart, lemon meringue tart) was wonderful.
We brought home a tourtiere and a huge box of pastries for New Year's Eve.
Service was quick and so friendly. This will be a regular stop when we're in Canada.
The absolute best restaurant in Ottawa! I'm from Moncton New Brunswick and this is always my first stop! The most delicious food and friendliest staff! Very cozy:) highly recommend 😊
As a Celiac, I love this 100% gluten free bakery right in the heart of downtown Ottawa! They have everything gluten free from sandwiches, pizzas, to a selection of desserts. Service is amazing. Caroline is very nice! Highly recommend this place!
Went to Olive & Chili for the first time and felt like a kid in a candy shop! Not only did the pastries look 'normal' but they were absolutely AMAZING! Bought bread and pastries and had a sausage roll for the first time in ten years! My pal and I split the sausage roll and a grilled smoke salmon panini - Food was fabulous and the owner and staff were superb! Highly recommend this gf establishment and will now make it a regular stop!!
I brought home a selection of pastries and my family loved them. The Danishes and eclairs were our favourites. I had your italian sandwich for lunch and your bread is delish. I think they forgot to add an item after heating it up for me. I highly recommend this place!
Wonderful 100% gluten-free bakery/restaurant, incredible baked goods! I haven't seen this kind of selection anywhere in my area before today and what I have eaten so far..yummy indeed! I will be back when I get to Ottawa for sure!
This is the most unique gf offering I have ever experienced! Great gf food and large selection of gluten free treats... even the coffee is quite good. My only constructive criticism is they could have slightly more efficient service. But overall staff is friendly and the civility is clean. I’ll definitely go back.
best GF place in Ottawa. conveniently and nicely situated in By Market. efficient bilingual Service. Large choice of breads pastries, sandwiches, hot meals and salads. suitable for vegetarians. must see and must try
Friendly staff and a huge selection of 100% gluten free foods ranging from breakfast to supper to dessert! So good! I ate here a lot during my Ottawa stay and was never disappointed!
Silly me, I just found out you were on Facebook. I go by about twice a week. Today I had a frittata for lunch and a Paris-Brest for dessert. I am always happy I when I have time to stop by and get goodies. These are the best pastries in town and they are gluten free which means I can eat them. They may be the best GF pastries in the Americas but I haven't tried every place yet so I can't be sure.
My daughter just brought me a box of assorted treats. Amazing! All of them are delicious. So hard to find good gluten free. Thank You—will definitely be back to sample more!!
Excellent service and the food is sooo amazing. When in Ottawa you have to come here for brunch/lunch/dinner! The owner here is great she treats you like family. While we were having brunch two customers walked in just to say thank her for the great food.
Food was tasty and service was good. My friend and I were the only ones there. They asked us to sit and they served us the food. It wasn’t perfect but it was still great. Hence I give it four stars. Can’t go wrong trying it out. Their vanilla latte is also very tasty and good quality.
Great gluten free options with decent prices. Everything in the restaurant is certified to be 100% gluten free
Fantastic gluten free bakery in the Byward Market. Spectacularly good stuff!
This place is an absolute paradise for anyone with Celiac disease. Not only is everything (I mean everything) certified gluten-free but it actually tastes really good too. I'm happy to invite friends and family to come here with me and know that we'll all be able to find something good to eat. Their loaves of bread are without a doubt the best-tasting gluten-free ones I've found to date. I'm also astounded by their wide assortment of puff pastry based items including croissants and sausage rolls. 100% recommend checking this place out!
They had sausage rolls the last two times I went! I don't know how they manage to make the pastry flaky when it's gluten free but I'm happy they do.
A great selection of reasonably priced gluten free food. I like their meal option (2 sides and 1 main).
It's easy to order 2 meals worth of food rather than 1 (because you generally go in hungry and they have a lot of variety).
Their store hours posted on Google and their website don't always match their actual store hours. Hours are longer in the summer and shorter in the colder months.
Their staff is friendly and beyond helpful. Love this place.
Great gluten free spot! Always visit here when I’m in the market.
Pretty good GF food (but not the greatest). I had great service when I went, but the food is the business. I can recommend the cheese danish (as long as you're okay with thick pastry and less filling), otherwise, I'm still looking for my go-to place. PS - the best looking foods are the least tasty, based on the 6 things I tried.
Wonderful find in Ottawa's in Byward Market. It is a bake shop, restaurant, catering service and everything is gluten-free. No table service.. order at the counter and the food is delivered by a staff member. They have a cracker jack pastry chef (awesome cactus inspired chocolate Easter bunnies for example). Checkout the salads, sold by weight... Especially the beet fennel, orange salad
Recently found out I am gluten intolerant...found this location on google search while in Ottawa. Tried it and will definitely be going back! We had the chicken pesto sandwich with gumbo and a peanut butter cookie....all of which were amazing! Never thought gluten free would be so delicious! Made me much happier about my health changing my eating habits.
Finding a place where someone with gluten allergies can eat everything is all but impossible - except here ... simply being able to choose anything in the eatery is refreshing!
Sandwiches were good, the desert selection was great and delicious!
This café/restaurant is fantastic for its variety of gluten free dishes. One can get side dishes, main courses and fabulous desserts.
Definitely worth a visit for people who need to avoid gluten and those who are willing to try something different.
I wish I'd found this place sooner! The selection of GF pasteries is amazing... I had such a hard time narrowing my choices down.
Be sure to try both sides of the restaurant - the hot food is fantastic as well. I just finished the quiche I took 'to go' yesterday, and not only did it reheat well, but the crust was nice and flaky.
Everything I've ever had here has been fresh and made in a genuine manner. The range of options is excellent. The pastries and soups are first rate.
Francophone staff are bilingual, and very friendly. The outdoor seating looks out on the Byward market, so it's interesting but not too loud or trafficked.
This place is 100% gluten free, but you wouldn't guess looking at their incredible selection! One side is a bakery with everything from cakes to breads, turnovers and croissants. The other side boasts a kitchen with everything from lasagna, duck confit, sandwiches, quiche, salads, ...
You can eat in the cafeteria-style bistro, on the terrace on a warm day, or take-out your meal (you pay by weight for all deli items).
I recommend this place to everyone whether you avoid gluten or not. They also have a list of common allergens for those with other food allergies or intolerances.
Everything is gluten free, and taste very good. The very best part of this shop is definitively the pastry. We went once for dinner, which was good and tasty, but not exactly mouthwatering like the pastry usually is.
Found this gem on my first walk through the Bayward market, and what a find indeed.
For us Celiacs this is a true heaven.
The breads and baguettes were amazing, also the little tarts and cookies, all tasty and fresh.
Definitely worth a visit!
This place is peerless among GF bakeries. They have several classic French pastries, cookies, cakes, sandwiches, etc. I had my first croissant here in over 30 years. Wish we had a place like this in Boston!
