Not bad for the north shore. Ordered the Beef ribs bento box (it was okay...) and then #14 combo that came with 3 different rolls all with different fillings. Overall, a place I would return to try their reasonably priced special rolls.
Amazing roll is aptly named, as it was amazing. Loved the jungle roll. California roll was average.
Great new find in North Van!. My partner and I had gotten tired of the same old sushi places in North Van and had decided to try something new when we came across Aka Tom-Bo on the web.
Our first visit: We were a little taken aback by the unappealing and unassuming street entrance but was pleasantly surprised the moment we were inside and by the service AND the food. We had one of the best Tako sunomono, an order of prawn tempura, very generously sliced salmon and tuna sashimi, specialty crunchy roll , a dragon roll and a BC roll to share between the two of us (yes, we were famished!). We could only wait 3 days before we had to go back.
Second visit: I had to have the crunchy roll again. We also had the mixed sashimi, the spicy salmon specialty roll and the tako sunomono. My partner wanted to order the katsudon but we were told they were out of pork for the evening (it was quite busy) and offered the kitchen version which he was happy to accept and it turned out he was very pleased with. They promptly brought us complimentary miso soups as an apology.
Attentive, fast, friendly service and tasty, great food, I would highly recommend :-)
My Go-To Sushi place. I really like their creative rolls here. They are a good combination of creative and traditional/the norm.
The service is so-so. They are very stingy on the wasabi and ginger, you have to ask for more especially if you're going to have a lot of sushi. My favs there are the yam roll, cali roll, Canuck roll, Sakura roll, and Alaska roll. Also their salmon avocado roll is yummy too. Their other Japanese food is okay, my mom doesn't like the sunomono salads there, the vinegar is very sweet she says. The other foods like the teriyaki chicken and yaki soba are made is inferior sauces.
If you want solid sushi at good prices (lunch is 3 rolls out of the list for 5.99) then I would strongly suggest this. It's a little gem in North Van.
If you are close by ...go.. Decent Sushi
Decent service
Decent prices
What's not to like?
Try it.

Actually the best in town.. Aka-Tombo is hands down the best sushi in Vancouver. For those wanting traditional Japanese fare, this is not the sushi restaurant for you, but for those in search of the tastiest and most creative rolls I'm town, no one outdoes Aka-Tombo!
Aka Tom-Bo. Bo and I started off with the crispy spicy tuna roll. I was excited to try more as it was a solid 8 on the flavour meter.
She ordered the seafood hot pot which lacked depth and broth according to her expert opinion. I wouldn't have ordered the dish but she loves the soup! I don't know how fresh the green mussels were. They can't be too fresh coming from NZ or Oz.
Miso soup cost a buck as well but should have been free as it was nothing special.
I asked the waitress about the fish being used in the recipes; like where it came from, what cut was used, fresh or frozen, farmed or wild... She was clueless but cute. I knew she must have been Chinese which she later confirmed stating that she was Mandarin and from the central part of China. I can forgive her then for not knowing much about the fish.
I decided to try the dragon roll after her recommendation. It looked cool with the tobiko eyes and crusty eel back surrounding the shrimp tempura rice cover. However, I miss fresh eel from Asia. I'd give it a 6 if that.
For the final test I ordered a tekka maki which was subpar and similar to the dirt cheap sushi restaurants you find littered all over Lonsdale.
I liked the restaurant, but do not believe it is one of the best! Maybe I was spoiled in Asia. I think Bo misses the food back home...
Peace in the Middle East...
JOeL.
Consistently Great Sushi. You can have menu from their website www.akasushi.ca
Best sushi on the north shore. If you haven't been here, you're missing out. the food is amazing - tastiest gomaae i've ever tried. lots of creative rolls including one with no rice - ocean garden roll. the service is wonderful and the chefs are actually japanese. nothing compares on the shore - just go!
We were running some errands in on the North Shore recently, and got the grumblies. Since M used to live along the Lonsdale corridor, we searched around looking for some familiar eats. Since it was a Sunday, a few of our "usual" joints were closed (ahem,
