Review Longtail Kitchen - New Westminster

Colleen Chang
We ordered the longtail wings, chicken pad thai, roti with peanut sauce and daily curry with prawn (comes with rice). Everything was super good and tasty. Our favourite items were the chicken wings and the curry. The pad thai was solid and the roti was nice and crispy. I would definitely go again just for the wings!

We ordered basil pork and egg with rice, and a green curry tofu. Both dishes were good, and the presentation was good as well. Staff were polite and they came to fill water several times. The food was not cheap though - $16 per dish (for the items we ordered). If you are in the area, this restaurant is worth a try.

This place is awesome! Pretty expensive, but I mean the going rate to be fair since your right on the Waterfront. A sweet casual, comfort and relaxed vibe to chow down on some great grub in the sun. We got the Pad See Ew ผัดซีอิ๊ว in which the kind and friendly staff were able to accommodate customizing it into a tofu-based veggie option. A plentiful portion of yummy wide rice noodles with a good mound of tofu, egg and veggies and was super yummy. We also got the Roti in peanut sauce to start which was devoured in seconds, wow that stuff is adictive, crazy good!! The menu is focused and specific, specializing in a great selection of delicious Thai cuisine whilst offering both veggie and meat options. I love how this joint uses so much compostable friendly cutlery, eating boxes and bowls as well as cups. Every little change makes a huge positive impact to save our beautiful planet. Khob khun ka ขอบคุณค่ะ !! Support local business!

I would definitely come back to try other items on the menu. I came on a hot sunny day for lunch. The fried cauliflower wasn’t greasy at all. The pad Thai had amazing flavour and perfect heat with juicy shrimp. The chicken wings was perfectly crunchy and seasoned just right. Although it was a lot casual because of the patio seating only it was still enjoyable and delicious.

Great place! Got the pad thai chicken and 3 sides to share with my boyfriend. Longtail wings, green papaya salad, and hand pulled roti w/peanut sauce were all delicious. They don’t lie about the wings… a bit more on the expensive side but we thought it was worth it :)

In my opinion, this place is low-key so good that not many people know locally! I tried every food that they have on their menu and everything were very good!! This place is located at the corner of food court of New Westminster quay.. they have a nice patio outside too! If you're first time, I would recommend trying their Chinese Sausage Fried Rice and the Longtail Fried Chicken! They are reasonably priced too!! Highly recommended! Note: Photos taken Pre-Covid

I have eaten here 3 times total. I haven't been here for about a year, had a craving for Thai food so this place popped into my head. So happy I came back! The food is expensive, but well worth it. Delicious flavors and fills you up. We got the stir-fryed eggplant, roti with peanut sauce, and long tail chicken wings. All of them were so yummy; the eggplant is something I am definitely ordering again!

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food. My favourite dishes are the turmeric curried mussels, eggplant, and the pad thai. I order them every time! To top off the amazing experience you can have a pint of Steel and Oak beer.

I swear if this place was closer I would be there for lunch every weekend. As it is we drive in from Abbotsford often to experience the best Thai street food ever. Always some good daily specials as well as must have favourites. Chicken wings are addictive!

Crispy chicken was good but the Singapore fried noodle didnt have much flavour in it.
Steve Cadiz
One of the best Thai restaurant in Vancouver BC or not the very best
Twila Schembri
Had the pad Thai tofu. It was amazing and i will definitely be going back soon!
Thomas Turniawan
The best pad thai and chicken wings in the city. You will not regret coming here.

Bad food Poor customer service Over priced Ordered two chicken pad Thai’s for 27$. Got a few pieces of chicken in each bowl - there was mostly tofu. I asked for more chicken, so one of the chefs whipped up some more chicken. What they gave us was flavourless, had bones and skin in it too. I took all of the tofu from one the dishes and put it in another bowl - it was half full of tofu. I showed it to someone at the till and explained why I was upset with the experience. They were not very accommodating. I will not be returning.

So delicious! Pad Thai is amazing and so are those chicken wings!

Gorgeous food.

This "restaurant" wasn't anything like what the pictures looked like online on their website. also from the pictures on the website, I wasn't expecting to be served my food on disposable plates, etc. Both my wife and I have been to Thailand and enjoyed the food over there. What we got here wasn't even remotely close. We were quite disappointed with what we got and how much we had to pay for it. For how much we paid, you expect to be eating at a nice sit down restaurant, better tasting food, and bigger portions than we got. we won't be back.
Sandra Dielissen
Disappointed. Had better Pad Thai at the food court in the Mall. Paid $12 for prawn Pad Thai, and only got 3 prawns - small ones, that weren't properly cleaned. Noodles had no flavour other than heat from chilis. Also, very concerning that one of the cooks stepped in to take my order and cash, then went back to work without washing his hands. Maybe it was just too busy for them to handle.

Chef's prawn curry is amazing! For someone like me that can't eat spicy will love the sweet mild curry flavour<3

• I found my favourite Thai resto in the lower mainland!
• Authenticity 100%!!!
• they are known for their Chicken Wings and yes it is the best ever! Perfectly seasoned, crispy and just delicious! I can have this over and over again. I would like to have a bucket of it lol. Seriously!
• Chicken Basil: flavourful, spices are great, flavour marry together. Crispy egg: nice touch!
• Singaporean vermicelli noodles: good as well! Lovely flavours in every strand
• Fried rice: also good, basically everything in this restaurant is worth to have! You won’t be disappointed
• Curry: good amount of coconut and the curry flavour
• Fish/Chicken balls: just like the one in Thailand!
• Pad Thai: well made
• I highly recommend this place! I will be back numerous times, watch out :)
• parking: $3+/hour at the hotel; park along Front Street or take the transit
• service: great!
• ambiance: cozy
I've been wanting to come here for the longest time but they are always closed early so it's been hard to pay them a visit but lately we've been going to new west during the late afternoons so I get to catch them before they close! Of course, I had to try some of their satay skewers and noodle soup and both were amazing! Lots of coconut flavor that reminds you of thai and malaysian cuisine. The price point here is a little higher than most especially for a order at counter joint but it's so worth it!

good service
great food
very small restaurant but cozy a little hard to find unless you are specifically looking for it
parking can be a hassle
great price
if i had to choose 1 dish: chicken wings
would i go back? yes

3.2/5 they share some items with the one on Granviile Island. Sadly the skill of cooking my order ( was on the special sector, Pad Woon Sen) is lacking. I can barely taste any flavours other than noodle itself. I can't finish it ( too plain to finish). Although the failure on the noodle part, the fish ball is great. The sweet and sour taste, and a bit of empathized sweet hit are all good. As usual I'm a fan of their Thai Iced Tea. They put the iced tea on the fridge, you can grab by yourself once paid the bill. The shelf display is another memorable thing. I like the feeling of wondering in the market while waiting for the cook.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Longtail Kitchen so I was expecting big, bold flavours coming in. It’s located in the River Market of the Quay, which also houses one of their sister restaurants, Freebird Chicken Shack. They also have three other spots: Maenam Thai, Fat Mao Noodles and Sen Pad Thai.

On my continued search for great Thai food near home, I think I have finally found my spot in Longtail Kitchen in New West. I admit that I have been longing to go since I saw some of the dishes featured in “You Gotta Eat Here,” but was only able to try it last night, months after I saw the episode.

Longtail Kitchen is a casual eatery located at the River Market in New Westminster that focuses on Thai-style comfort food. The food you find here are quite similar to what people will find at traditional food stalls in Thailand like pad thai, roti, and of course.. curry! The restaurant first opened its doors in 2013 by Chef Angus An who also owns other well known Thai establishments in Metro Vancouver: Maenam, Fat Mao Noodles, Freebird Chicken, and his latest project underway- Sen Pad Thai on Granville Island. Follow him on instagram for the latest scoops like me 😉

Authentic, delicious food. The staff seems to work well together. Their location is on some prime real estate so I'm sure they are super busy in the spring and summer months

This is a regular takeout place for us. It has yet to disappoint. The atmosphere is super casual. Grab a beer while you wait for your food. I do like the chicken wings but much fave is the pad thai with prawns. It's inexpensive and tasty.

Having come here after eating Freebird, we definitely wanted more of a snack so we decided to try out Maenam’s third store, Longtail kitchen. Hearing a lot of people talking about their crispy chicken wings as “cracked wings” I had to try it for myself. So how was the wings? . Famous chicken wings with tamarind sauce $8

I happened to be in the New West area on a sunny day around 2 pm, and I decided to grab a bite to eat. Longtail Kitchen was nearby and my friend had recommended it so I decided to check it out. It was not busy at all (just once person in front of me). W and I ordered one dish each. W ordered a Laksa and I ordered the Mee Goreng with Chicken.

This Thai/Asian joint is located inside of the New Westminster Quay. Casual place; you order at the till and there is a self serve condiment counter. We went on a fairly hot summers day and there were flies everywhere...was hard to eat and swat flies at the same time. Overall, food was quite tasty, but portions were small. Chicken wings were quite flavourful and was one of my faves.
Imkoonta
I can rave about the wings, its out of this world! Crispy, freshly made so piping hot, uber tasty with a fabulous dipping sauce. The pad thai not so much. The noodles were undercooked and oversauced and I have had much better pad thai in Kits, Downtown and South Granville area. As I am about an hour away from New West, it is unlikely I would make a special trip there just to have the wings but when I have out of town visitors who want to check out the Quay, I am so there. For them wings only though. Oh, service was non existent so don't come expecting good table service, its very much a food court type venue.

We came here because their reviews were good having higher scores. The interior design and style are well done. When we walked into the restaurant, we felt like we went to a restaurant in Thailand.

We had to order the food at the counter. They asked us to wait for 10 mins. We grabbed a table that was facing the river. The view was nice. We ordered pad Thai prawns, crispy chicken wings and Thai iced milk tea. After we had the first bite of each of these food, oh my goodness! They tasted amazingly awesome! Mama Mia! It was so good! Of course their food relied on a lot of dressings and sauces but the combination was so good especially the pad Thai and crispy chicken wings. We could not find this excellent pad Thai anywhere else in Vancouver! The texture, flavour, and mix of ingredients created this wonderful dish! The portion was a bit small and it was pricy for a smaller portion but we thought it was worth it!

We would like to come back and try other dishes of their Thai food! Yummy!!

We went as a group of four, each getting something different. Service wasn't the quickest, but it was very busy which was a good sign for us, and we were willing to wait.
When the food was ready and served, the aromas of fresh herbs and spices permeated the air, and was wonderful! The portion sizes at first seemed small, but after savouring the flavours, it was enough and I was satisfied with quality rather than quantity.
On of the dishes ordered was Pad Thai, a good barometer to test a Thai Restaurant, needless to go into too many details, It was EXCELLENT. Quality outperformed the quantity, but in the end it was enough to be satisfied and wanting to come back for more.
If I had to say something negative to keep the review realistic, the portion sizes along with he higher than average prices could discourage new comers from experiencing this hidden delight, but once you have tasted the food (hopefully on a beautiful day when you can enjoy the outside deck) then the total experience will well worth it!

Longtail Kitchen is an authentic Thai cuisine at the revitalised River Market at New Westminster Quary.

We came here because we read many good reviews from Zomato. We also know this is a restaurant owned by Angus An. Chef Angus An is the same chef owner of Maenam Restaurant in Kitsilano and Fat Mao Noodles in Chinatown.

Longtail Kitchen is different than Maenam Restaurant. It only opens 10am to 7 pm. It has an expressed kitchen. It also carries and sells ingredients on the side.

The only disappointed is they sold out their Yellow Curry with Mussels. We definitely will go back early next time.

Food: 4.5/5
Services: 4.5/5
Special Features: Crispy Chicken Wings, Tempura Fried Oysters, Mama Cheung's Laksa

Cute little place in the river market. Heard a lot about this place so I'm glad I finally got a chance to try their food. Ordered the crispy pork belly and gailan stir fry. Great spice kick that I wasn't expecting so don't order it if you don't like spicy food. Great flavours and good portion size.

Another over-hyped place. I had two most Instagramed dishes, laksa and wings. Laksa was crwamy but very underseasoned. Generous toppings. Wings were crispy but coating was too sweet for my liking. Dipping sauce was good.
Gracecheung604
Despite all the hoopla about Longtail, I'm ashamed to say that I haven't made a trip out to New Westminster to give them a try. Well, I finally rectified that recently. Because they are a bit far for me, I made sure I was starving so I could sample as much as I could in one go. I think we made a good dent in the menu...we spent close to $80 in total, since Sherman paid, I guess the next meal overload is on me!

I finally had the chance to try this place, it's been on my list forever. I got the crispy chicken wings with tamarind sauce. They were so good! I also tried their papaya salad, it was crunchy and tasted fresh. I definitely would come back to try other items.

One of the joints that i personally wanted to try in this foodcourt was longtail kitchen which serves southeast Asian food. Im a sucker for anything curry so we quickly agreed upon getting the green beef curry as well as the papaya salad cause thats also one of my all time thai favs. The taste was without a doubt on point, but i do feel for the price they were a lil skimpy of the portion sizes. Personally i felt there weren't too many pieces of beef floating around in our curry. Still, they packed a lot of flavour and we enjoyed every bite.

came here on a weekday lunch, and was on my explore mode, so i've been wanting to come here twice already, and so this time will be the time, coming into the building, and went through the foodcourt, yep the place is located on the corner a restaurant by itself. Thai food, i'm not a big fan of thai food, although i'm a big fan of thai culture, for some reason i always find the culture's food is good, but somehow it's not really satisfying.

but never theless i ordered a few items, in this location to get everything in one go, first the laksa, i've never thought i would find laksa in this location. the laksa the portion is healthy, and the ingredients are definitely okay, the laksa itself i would say is decent.

then I also got the pad siew with beef. this one is okay as well, the taste of the stirfried is definitely okay. beef was thickness is just good for stiffried and the sauce is not overwhelming.

and also got the chicken wings, this chicken wings hmmm alittle bit different from what i thought, the flour is more translucent type, and the taste is more to the sweeter counterpart, although there's also the salty part of it. a little bit different from most of the chicken wings, and reminds me more like pnom penh chicken wings, i would say this might be a good comparison with pnom penh, although i can see many people will favor pnom penh's, but i can also see a fraction of the people liking longtail's better.

overall i would say the taste of the food is definitely decent and definitely likeable, but it's not really memorable. price wise it might be okay for the portion although bigger portions is always nice.
Kelly Yee
Price aside for the extremely small portions of food, the food is actually good. Spent $40 for 2 people and left still hungry. I would only Suggest coming here for food to get some good flavors, not to fill your belly.
Labonbon
Tried the crispy fried wings and liked it a lot.
It had an unique spicy and sweet flavor.
$8 for 7 wings isnt too bad of a deal.
Would go back.

I met a friend for lunch, and we went to the LongTail Kitchen in the River Market. It’s been years since I last visited the New Westminster River Market (most recently in the late 1990s or early 2000s). It’s changed alot since then, and undergone a bit of an redesign in the process. The Longtail Kitchen is under the same ownership and guidance as Maenam. Angus An’s popular and well praised Thai restaurant in Kitsilano’s West 4th Avenue. Longtail is much more casual. It’s a cafeteria type set up in the food court area of the River Market, but it’s in it’s own closed off space, that includes retail shelving filled with products from south east asia.

Longtail located at the River Market in New West, and they serve Thai/Asian food. It's a small restaurant but it serves amazing food. We came here for lunch and we got the roti, mussels curry, chicken wings, and fried oysters. They all had great flavors, especially their curry. The mussels were as plump as I wanted them to be, but the curry was excellent and it had enough heat. Longtail is especially famous for their deep fried chicken wings with tamarind sauce. It had incredibly crispy skin, and the overall dish had a good balance of sweet and sour. I would love to come back for their other items, and I believe they have specials once in awhile. The only complaint I have tho, is their portion is quite small. So if you are thinking of sharing, you better get more than a few dishes.

Ended up at the River Market looking for vegan eats last night. My friend and I wandered into Longtail Kitchen during the dead-time before any sort of happy hour (between 4pm and 5pm) and we inquired about what might be vegan. The suggestions were the tofu pad thai and eggplant stirfry. There's a wall of very limited south east asian groceries, assorted seating in two's, four's, and a longer communal table; and a condiment station with self-serve water.
Danomango
The best Thai food in the entire area around Burnaby, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Potentially it could be better than any other Thai place in Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, White Rock, Delta, and maybe Surrey.

About a month ago, I finally got to try Longtail Kitchen and it was not quite what I had expected. They serve Thai and Malaysian fusion dishes that were on the pricier side for quite small proportions. This restaurant is located around the New Westminster Quay.
TheHappySloths
The shrimp pad thai ($13) had great authentic flavors but it had the smallest portion I've ever seen. There were only three shrimps (which works out to $1 per shrimp because regular pad thai is only 10$).
Not worth the price!

Located in River Market at New Westminster, longtail kitchen is the 2nd location opened by Maenam‘s celebrity chef, Angus An. A bistro that serves Thai comfort food, longtail kitchen serves up some delicious noodles, stirfry, and curry dishes east of Vancouver for those who don’t want to venture out too far to find quality Thai cuisine.

Best Thai place in new west! The Pad Thai with prawns is the best!! My only thing is that it's a bit heavy on the salt, but still really damn good!
Claire Grace
Finally got out to New West to try this place and we were not disappointed! Long tail Kitchen provides fresh tasting Thai food made (practically) right before your eyes. The setting is very casual but very warm. I enjoyed that the line cooks preparing the food were able to look out and watch people's reactions to the taste of the food they had just prepared. It added a level of intimacy to the meal. We went in August, so the patio was open. The view of the Fraser River is outstanding and we enjoyed the warm August air, but unfortunately sweet smelling Thai food does attract many a fly. We spent a good chunk of our meal swatting them away and I'm sure those in the kitchen did too.
I ordered the pad thai prawns and my partner ordered the fried rice with Chinese sausage. Portions were huge and we both left stuffed. I can see us returning in the winter months when we need something comforting to fill our bellies and warm us up from the rain.
NomNomYVR
Had their delicious chicken wings with tamarind sauce and stir fry gailan with pork belly. The stir fry packed a punch that I wasn't expecting, but delicious nonetheless.
Great place to eat.
Went there recently for the first time. The chinese girl hostess and cashier with glasses was very friendly courteous; the pad thai with sweet and sour tamarind sauce (no ketchup!) was amazing; the fried oysters dipped in lime-fish sauce-Chili dip was heavenly light, fresh, and delicious; and the papaya salad was crunchy, fresh and flavourful. Awesome! The only drawback was the very sticky floors .... But easy to ignore with all that good food and service!
EATeatEat
I'm Thai, I wouldn't say it's authentic. But the food here is still amazing in its own way. Love their deep fried oysters, wouldn't say that is thai but it's still good.
Shydi
Good food, but portions were a bit small, and we weren't too fond of the take out containers and plastic cutlery.

Not cheap, but worth it. Came for lunch on a sunny Friday afternoon around 1pm with four co-workers. Although the aroma from the bbq place next door was definitely stronger, it smelled delicious in here as well. The menu is fairly limited, so it didn't take us long to figure out what we were having. I ordered the rad na, which consists of pork, rice noodles, gailan (mix of bok choy and broccoli type veg), and mushrooms. I didn't keep track of what everyone else had, but at least one in our group ordered the pad thai.

Food came quick and was delicious. I'm not a big meat eater so I was quite happy it wasn't weighed down with lots of pork. The meat itself was cooked well and good quality (not fatty or gristly). There was gailan, but not much as I recall. Mushrooms were tender and flavorful. But the sauce was the real star: perfect amount of heat and flavor. Everyone else enjoyed their food as well. Portions are fairly generous; we had been considering ordering appies to share as well, but we were glad we didn't because some of us had a difficult time finishing their entrees.

Staff was friendly and quick. Atmosphere was casual hipster (Beirut was playing through the speakers by the counter, and they had the delicious Projekt 0002 pale ale from Steel & Oak on tap for 5.50!). I'll come again, but maybe not often, as $12 is a bit more than I usually want to spend for lunch. It is worth it, though, compared to yer Earl's and yer Cactus Club type places.

Update June 2016: Been back several more times since my first visit. My go-to has been the green curry chicken, but last time, I had the Laksa ($10-11) and wow! That was incredible! I don't care much for oysters normally, but this was just so good. The coconut milk curry broth, heavy on the coriander, the way I like it, was incredible. Slurping it up, I made a mess all over my shirt. Need a bib next time I go.

I’ve been hearing many great things about Longtail Kitchen on social media, and decided that it was finally time for me to try it out! The laksa came with a seafood curry broth, chicken, fish cakes, prawns, veggies, and noodles.

Very delicious food! Portions getting smaller now tho... So it's a little expensive. I get the Chicken Wings every single time (I think it's even better than phnom phen)

Cancelling my trip to Bangkok. We've found it. This is it. We stumbled across this little gem at the Quay as the BBQ place next door ran out of meat, and am I glad they did otherwise I would've been stuffing my face with another pound of pulled pork. We had such a great time at Longtail. Their Rad Na Pork with Fishcake was jam packed with fresh ingredients and authentic Thai flavours. My wife who worked at a Thai restaurant for years under a Thai chef (and super picky about Thai food) attests to that.

The Gailan (Chinese broccoli) in their Stir Fried Gailan with Pork Belly was super fresh and crunchy, which complemented perfectly with the soft and flavourful pork belly. The Roti with Peanut Sauce was soooo tasty, with their hand-pulled roti served with a fresh and crispy exterior. The peanut sauce was something different too, and more like a spicy-sweet chunky peanut butter than the curry sauce we'd normally see.

One word of caution though: some of the stuff on the menu without a chili pepper warning logo on it are actually quite spicy, such as the Rad Na and the Gailan. But we mentioned that to the staff and immediately got another dish of non-spicy Gailan, with a smile. We got to keep the spicy one and gobbled it all up anyway! Awesome food. Awesome staff. They'll be seeing us again.

Not bad, I'd go back. I've been meaning to try this spot ever since a friend went there over a year ago. He had gone there to experience their tasting menus and his pictures made the food look so good (well, his pictures always make food look good -- being a foodie and photographer). I had the pad thai and my partner had a spiced duck noodle soup of some sort (it was a special and not on their regular menu, I think). While the portions could be more generous, the quality was there. I liked that they have extra condiments on the counter for customers to add (e.g. crushed peanuts, deep fried/dried shallots, etc.). We also shared the deep fried chicken wings (which a couple friends had raved about) and I really liked the spices they used to garnish/cover it.

Great Thai Food!. This place deserves much more credit that it receives. They are serving up some authentic Thai dishes right down to the side sauces. I love their special Chiang Mai style chicken.

The servings are reminiscent of real Thai Street food. With cilantro, fried onions, fish sauce etc... no detail had been overlooked. Put this one on your list!
Daisy
Bold flavours on the pricier side. I've sampled offerings from Longtail three or four times since they opened. The taste has always been bold and flavourful. However, I find the portion size of their new dishes to be quite small for the price. They have changed their menu and prices several times. The new menu has been disappointing in terms of size and price. For this reason, I will not be returning.
Mc1986
Went there on Friday, nobody greeted me when I entered the place so I sat myself outside. So I waited patiently at this filthy table and still no one aknowledged me being there, went up to the counter to order a singha but they were all out so I settled for a 7.50 asahi which was actually advertised as 6.50 on the board. All in all I got a crappy vibe in my ten mins of being there.
Chung006
Great spot in New West. Haven't been to the Quay in a while and been meaning to check out Longtail because I love Maenam. Made it there last night and was very happy. Quay is completely changed with other food stalls I want to try... Re-up, La Grotto etc... Will go back for sure. The set up in LT was very cool, family style joint, not quite food court, but not quite restaurant, very casual. Pad Thai was great, enjoyed the roti, green curry w fish cakes and chinese sausage omelette. Only item that disappointed was the Kai Lan w pork belly. There is a pork belly dish at Maenam that is sticky, sweet and crunchy, thought it was the same dish but the pork belly was stir fried and it was a completely different consistency.

Overall, not the same food as Maenam, it is a more economical / simpler version of it's sister restaurant, a great family style joint to visit when out in New West.

Love the freshness and potent flavors. This place is amazing. I've been multiple times and my favorites are the deep fried oysters, the tamarin ling cod and mussels curry (intensely tasty), pad thai, and the chicken wings.
Hello Hello
Small menu full of quality dishes. Small menu, full of quality dishes.

I hate thai restaurants with a 4+ page menu, that charges +$15 for a plate of mediocre curry that doesn't even include rice. Longtail is none of that.

Chicken wings were tasty, fried perfectly. Soup and curry was tasty, and full of seafood (nice mussels, clams). Pad thai was good, served up with all the proper toppings.

Disappointing. Was hoping for some authentic Asian/Thai street food, but unfortunately Longtail did not deliver. Visited on a Saturday afternoon - not too busy, smelled good and there appeared to be authentic ingredients in view. Menu seems very limited given the number of things you can do with the same ingredients. Service was polite but disconnected - the kitchen area is open so you can see the cooks at work. Decided on the Curried noodles with chicken and satays with peanut sauce, with some lemongrass water. Was not asked about the level of spiciness. Food took about 10 minutes to arrive. Curried chicken was different than expected in that the chicken component consisted of two whole drumsticks with the skin on on some noodles and sauce with crispy bits on top. While the presentation may have been authentic (sans cardboard container), it was very awkward to wrestle the chicken off the bone with plastic utensils or chopsticks, as bits of sauce splattered everywhere when you finally liberated a piece of chicken or noodle end. I can forgive that if the food rocks but, the dish was mysteriously devoid of flavour and there were no options of condiments to up the flavour to be had. The chicken skin was slimy and came off in one piece (I love crispy chicken skin but this was not appetizing in the least). Satays were thicker than expected with the peanut sauce already drizzled on top and not enough of it. Cucumber that had been pickled too long and was soft instead of crunchy was served alongside. The chicken had nice grill marks, but again hello flavour? The only component that had any taste was the lemongrass water, which was a overly perfumery and sweet instead of refreshing. For the price I could get more and better for less at other Thai restaurants nearby. Having said that, this place has potential with a few tweaks - authentic flavours, spiciness options, variety and more engaged customer service is needed, Here's hoping because i would love for them to nail it and succeed as I love the concept.

Good thai food!. Another case of just finding out about this place and makin' tracks....on a rainy day at the New Westminster Quay. The Pad Thai was super fresh, the noodles were great, it was quite sweet - the only mis-step were 3 overcooked prawns. Good and fresh green papaya salad, on the sour side. I tried the fried oyster but didn't like it - my sweetie liked them though.

The highlight for me was the wings - quite spicy and super yummy. I loved them a bit more than my sweetie did, and she really liked them. So crunchy and deeply flavourful....I'll want those again. Small menu, so we'll try the other items need time...plus the wings, for sure!

Great find. The menu is li.... Great find.
The menu is limited and the restaurant inside lacks anything pleasant, but the food is surprisingly good.
The seafood was super fresh (Mussels, spot prawns and oysters) and the spicing was unique and delicious. I really enjoyed the food, and its served at a gentle price.
I strongly recommend this place for an informal meal. Delicious.

Extreamly disappointed..... I was really looking forward for the opening, went there for lunch on the long weekend and was very disappointed.

My boyfriend lived in Thailand few years ago and I've visited Thailand many times when I was growing up, needless to say we're both fairly familiar with the Thai cousin. We arrived around 4 PM, it wasn't very busy but they ran out of dishes and most of the tables have not been cleaned.

We ordered 4 dishes for dine in, and they all came in the take out containers. The total bill came to $37.28 but it felt like a Eight-Dollars lunch at a food court experience.

The Pad Thai was over cooked, the noodles were very soggy and the portion was ridiculously small for $10 (in a small McDonald like container). Fried oysters was good but how can you go wrong with anything being deep dried in oil. Papaya salad was very dry and bitter, and it doesn't have any flavor. Northern style grilled hen was pre made and heated on grill again when you order it. The inside of the chicken was cold and 1/3 of the breast meat was RAW!!! I understand they just open the restaurant and trying to get everything together but there was no sincere apology, I feel the chef and the assistant cook do not take pride of their food knowing one of their costumers walking out with a very bad experience.

We will never go back again, nor recommend this restaurant to anyone.

With an open kitchen filling the place with delicious aromas ... I was super excited to eat! (6 hrs of shooting without food translates to a very hungry me photographer!) I felt like a kid in a mini thai kitchen, looking at all the spices, coconut cans, huge spoon decor and abundant amount of rice noodles all around the restaurant! I wanted to try their grilled chicken salad that was on their special m

Another day, another restaurant opening, right? Wrong! This week's opening of the Longtail Kitchen even rivalled the buzz generated by the new J Crew. In a stunt that could only be described as guerrilla PR, a game gaggle of media met Chef Angus An at Waterfront SkyTrain station at a strictly appointed time, were handed train tickets and whisked quickly to the platform. Within seconds, our train pulled up and we were instructed to step into the last car. Behold: between stops, the team had quickly transformed it into a Thai-themed party, complete with lanterns, flowers, Thai window shades and cushions on the seats. SkyTrain security turned a blind eye (" I saw nothing" she said), and fellow passengers were more than amused (and some quite amusing). In 20 minutes, we pull up to New West Minster's River Market www.rivermarket.ca, and Chef An ushers us down to the river and his new Thai street-food inspired restaurant. With cooking classes, wine dinners, and take-home kits for Pad Thai an

I know we go on and on about Longtail Kitchen in New West. They do longtable pop-up dinners featuring different chefs on a semi-regular basis. This was the first one we’ve been to. We really enjoyed it! Here’s the menu!

I was craving for thai food and was surprised at the number of thai restaurants there in New Westminster. Eventually, we settled on Longtail Kitchen. Longtail Kitchen is located within the River Market in New Westminster.

...our first course is up, Som dtam (Green Papaya Salad) and their famous Crispy Chicken Wings are our starters. The wings are super crispy and with the Tamarind dipping sauce they are way better than buffalo wings..

... extremely crisp, fresh and juicy, definitely the best wings I've had in a very long time, yes even better than 'legendary' Phnom Penh; tamarind sauce was actually a detriment, wings were best as is...

Posted on March 4, 2015 by mag_mei There has been much buzz surrounding this place, so I jumped at the opportunity to visit when in New Westminster. “Longtail Kitchen” promises a modern take on Thai street food. In their open kitchen they fuse traditional street food with their modern interpretations, using local ingredients. Their website promised brightly coloured spices and intense flavours in the form of curries, stews, soups and noodles. An exotic break to us, but dishes enjoyed day to day by Thai fishermen, which also plays a part in the origin of their restaurant’s name. “Longtail”, an affectionate name for their fishing boats. The restaurant is located at Westminster Quay facing the tranquil waters of the Fraser River. An easy walk past a giant toy solider and row of tug boats. All together an extraordinary scene on today’s cloudy and chilly February day; so I imagine even more so on a warmer and sunnier day, maybe a month away? The scenery made this restaurant quite the setting to have delicious meal at. A bowl on their outdoor patio with a back drop of blue waters and bluer skies to keep you company. But unfortunately given the temperate wind we opted of the warmth of four walls instead. The entrance is through the River Market Food Hall, one of many restaurants calling Westminster Quay its home. Though with its position and its eye catching exterior: an orange font paired with blue crabs outlined in drawing it certainly stood out. You enter the food hall and take an immediate left. The first thing you notice is the wall dedicated to authentic South East Asian canned and dried goods. A bevy of sauces and seasonings used in their cuisine and available for you to take home today at cost. Fried onions, chilli sauce, fish sauce, and coconut milk. All the basics were covered.

The noodles were cooked perfectly – just soft enough but still resistant to the teeth. Perhaps more importantly though, I could pull two or three noodles out of the bowl at a time. A simple perfection.

Longtail Kitchen at the revitalized River Market at New Westminster Quay is a quick counter service open kitchen that brings you authentic Thai cuisine. The eatery seats about 25 people faces the boardwalk patio along Fraser River. The barely 900 sqft Longtail Kitchen focuses on fresh seafood based Thai street food and some staple Thai comfort food like Pad Thai and Curry rice bowls . Prices are reasonable at $8 to $12 – comparable to a bowl of tasty pho .

Serving up authentic Thai comfort food in the Riverside Market. Longtail offers modern style Thai street food like curries, noodles and soups, stews and much more. Daily Specials When you walk pass the doors, don’t forget to look at their daily specials. You might be in for a treat that is not typically on their regular menu. Fa

I’ve been looking for an excuse to come back to try the rest of their menu. Truth be told, they don’t have an extensive menu… but what they do have is all made quite well.

A comfy little gourmet and ethical Thai street food restaurant, I had deep fried oysters. I was skeptical, because I am not a fan of deep fried oysters. It sometimes brings out the overwhelmingly seafood taste, but Longtail did not. It was sweet and sharp, soft and chewy oysters that paired well with a sweet sauce they served on the side. I was looking around their shop and was pleased to see Gluten-free products on the wall. I will have to come back for some pad thai. Since this was light fare, I don’t think it’s fair for me to rate these restaurants out of 5. So far my experiences with them have been pleasant enough for me to go back and really put the food critic glasses on.

After seeing some photos on instagram and a few people in the Twitterverse, I just had to make a visit to Longtail Kitchen in New Westminster for some Thai food. The interior was very cute with a variety of items arranged on the wall. The tables are not too crowded and has a very casual atmosphere. It’s a great place for lunch. Thai Iced Tea ($2) was very good. It was not too sweet and it reminded me more of like a Thai version of milked tea. Fresh Tumeric Curry of Ling cod and Mussels ($10) the mussels were very juicy and plump. The curry was very well balanced! Yum. The above dish came with rice too. It’s a good ratio of rice to broth too. You’ll still have some broth left over. Changmai Style Curry Noodle ($10) M ordered this dish and he enjoyed it. It’s not very large, but it is packed full of flavor. Crispy Longtail Chicken Wings ($8) was really good, but its not like Phnom Penh’s wings. It has a crunchy exterior surface and the meat is quite moist. I’m not exactly sure what spi

This was an excellent meal, one that showed imagination and skill. You could see that things were well thought out and purposeful. Everything was cooked spot on. I really don’t have anything to criticize here. This was really one of the better dinner’s I’ve been invited to as a media guest. Add to that the fantastic ambiance and the fun of being in an otherwise closed-to-the-public restaurant, this all adds up to rare and very enjoyable dining experience.

Yup. It’s time to crank up the old blog. After two and a half years, it’s time to dive back into the pool. I’ve returned to my old stomping grounds and it seems to have come alive with a variety of interesting and inspiring venues. New Westminster looks to have been revitalized and I can’t wait to check out what’s new and visit some of the better, long-standing spaces I have neglected. Recently, a good friend tipped me off to Longtail Kitchen’s Longtable Series . Longtail Kitchen is Chef Angus An’s New Westminster spin-off of the famed Maenam . Longtail Kitchen is a cozy resto of about twenty seats located in the Quay at New West. I’ve yet to dig in to their mainly Thai menu but from the word on the street and this wall of deliciousness, I know I will soon. Every so often Chef An opens his space for an interesting variety of dining experiences. This past Saturday, Chef Alex Chen put together a five-course Malaysian feast. His bio states that “He enjoys re-creating dishes from his child

Longtail kitchen is an offshoot of Angus An’s Maenam restaurant, created to serve Thai fisherman’s comfort food and Thai street food. The design is loosely based on Asian night markets, and features reclaimed wood and paper lanterns. The interior was bright and funky, with an open kitchen behind the counter where you place your order. There was also a wall lined with groceries for sale and other neat odds and ends like cookbooks and mortar and pestles. I really like it when ethnic restaurants have these little sections, an

Longtail Kitchen has landed at the food courts of New Westminster’s River Market — taking over the space once occupied by the short-lived Fathom. Maenam’s Angus An brings a slightly more casual take on Thai cuisine to the Royal City.
