Came here with my family for first time! All I can say is wow!!!!! The portions are huge and the food is just like home cooked meals. The prices are reasonable for how much food l received. The escargot was delicious and the cordon blue was to die for yummy will be back very soon! Great work cooks!
The best snitzel , service was great as well.
Will be coming back soon.I live in new west
so very close to home. This was my ninth or tenth time to the house, first time in 1979.
It has always been good.
We arrived here on a busy night but we're still seated quickly. The service was impeccable and the food also arrived quickly. I was impressed with the size of the servings. Everything was delicious! I recommend the Schnitzel Charlotte while my hubby had the combo platter (perfect for when you can't decide because it all looks good). We also enjoyed the German atmosphere and murals on the wall. We'll definitely be back. :)
Sometimes, I just get a craving for schnitzel. We popped in to The Old Bavaria Haus back in October because... well, what better time than Oktoberfest for schnitzel?
I flipped back and forth between the type of schnitzel I was going to order before finally settling on the Schnitzel Rockefeller where they top your crispy breaded schnitzel with oysters rockefeller. I really enjoy the red cabbage that their schnitzels come with.
If you've never been here before, try the combo dinner so you can try out a little bit of everything.
Had an awesome experience at this place. First of all, it's a very nice building, the outside facade and the interiors really set this place apart. Super cool place to enjoy a meal.
We had the German pasta with black forest mushrooms to start and it was absolutely amazing. Probably my favorite part of the meal.
For a main, I had the Bavarian Dinner, which included some sausage, sourcraut, veggies and some grilled onions, all topped with an amazing sauce. I was fully satisfied at the end of the meal. Service was really attentive. Will come again.
Birthday visit. A visit for the first time. Since it is the Sunday after Christmas it was busy the service however was attentive and friendly. We both started with the Caesar salad, it was light and fresh. I had the combination platter for my main meal. A platter of meat and spatzel, I am in heaven. This combination consisted of rouladen which was so tender and full of flavour. Next was the bratwarst... Also good, with a light flavor. I then had my schnitzel with peppercorn sauce. I was not a fan of the sauce, but the schnitzel had a good crunch. Rainbowcrab had the corden blue schnitzel, she loved the ham and cheese inside. It was very big.
We look forward to going back.
This place is awesome! Ive been here roughly 20 times and i have ordered the Rouladen every single time because it is excellent. Cabbage and Spatlze is tasty. Service has alwys been great as well.
Terrific Schnitzel!. Sat. Sept. 21 - A glass of wine and well prepared food is a great evening. Lucky we were in for 6:00 pm as it was full by 7:00 pm. Worth the trip to enjoy.
Service was pretty abysmal (the waitress took forever to take our order, forgot about my friend's drink, and seemed generally scatterbrained). The food was delicious though!
What a charming experience we had....we had a lovely time. Charming place, great service, full room by the time we left. The drinks were so reasonably priced, the food was good (a bit overcooked) and we enjoyed ourselves. Better than expected.
Warm garlic bread to start, yummy. I had the combo dinner - good schnitzel, very good gravy, mushy red cabbage (that I didn't eat), veggies in butter, the spatzle was handmade and ok, good bratwurst. My sweetie had the schnitzel Rockefeller, just in case it was a good combo, and it was not a natural fit after all and her schnitzel was overcooked but that was ok. Her wheat beer in a frosted glass was perfect. Homemade desserts: her black forest cake was very good and my apple strudel was overcooked but still good with vanilla whipped cream. I had a glass of riesling and actually drank the whole glass (I'm not much of a drinker).
Decided to use our entertainment book coupon and give this place a try cus we love LOVE european food. Man this place is busy (and totally charming looking)! Didn't think to make a reso, so we had to put our name down and go for a coffee and come back. Was oh so worth it! Ordered the Black Forest schnitzel and hubby got the schnitzel Rockefeller. Subbed spatzle for potatoes. Garlic toast was complimentary and good but the stars were the mains. The last time I had a delightful schnitzel was in Germany in 2011. Honestly, the spatzle was great but not the bestest ever (hard to beat spatzle in Germany, right?) The service was rockstar! From Kiran getting us in to Cheryl cracking us up. This was a fantastic experience. We will totally be back! Advice: make resos (it's busy!), come hungry (the portions a deceivingly enormous), be patient (like I said, they're busy and cook it fresh!) and tip well (these guys are fantastic and super sweet!)
Schnizel crisp and tasty, prices high but portions adequate. will go back to try some more.
This was my first time there and i really loved there food. I am German and i have to say this was the best german food i ever had eaten here in Canada!!
Decent. There are many choices and varities of Schntzel here, we ordered three different ones, crabmeat/shrimp, German sausage and mushroom Schnitzels and the NY steak. All are decent and I espcially like the red cabbage which is very tasty. The NY strip could be bigger and the prices are not cheap but overall pretty decent. Service was attentive. Parking can be scarce.
Yummy!. We ordered chicken schnitzel champignon and bratwurst schnitzel combo with appetizers of Caesar salad and onion soup. Nothing was less than delicious! Portions of appetizers are smaller but the dinner platters are a good size. And you get garlic bread for the bread basket! Even the merlot was great! Service also attentive with a very rustic cozy feel to the house turned restaurant. If you love German food (and I never was a big fan) definitely worth a try!
Delicious! I've enjoyed many meals at Old Bavaria Haus and they are consistently great! The food is always perfectly cooked, and the service is friendly and attentive. An old school charmer, that doesn't try to be anything but.
Amazing schnitzels. If you go here definately order one. The service was amazing and the food was amazing. A little pricey, but its worth every penny for a date night
Stolid schnitzels. I use the word "stolid" for a reason. It means kinda plain, not excitable, but not necessarily negative. Old Bavaria House is that way.
It's respectable German meat-and-potatoes fare -- not that there's anything wrong with that. Their food won't make you jump and say "Wow, that's fantastic!" It's the equivalent of a good German burgher -- I didn't say "burger" -- the kind of average citizen who goes about his business and gets the job done decently, not flashily.
My wife and I liked our schnitzels. Nicely-breaded and fried, not spicy or over-doughy, Big flat poundings of meat. Hers was plain, mine had champignons under a pleasant Bernaise sauce that was so light it was almost frothy. Slightly over-sweet red cabbage, barely-steamed broccoli/cauliflower/carrot medley and dry fried potato chunks as sides. (Ketchup helped the latter.) Rib-sticking, stomach-filling food, not sophisticated, but good on a long, cold, rainy night.
Our dessert, which was called blueberry "cheesecake," was more like a Charlotte, according to my wife, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of cooking terms. That is, it was made with some gelatine added to the cream cheese. This makes it mile-high and puffy, like it was done with Dream Whip whipped cream substitute. Good flavour, odd texture.
Old Bavaria House has a decent wine selection, including some light German whites, and enough German beers to make an Oktoberfester pound his chester. The decor inside is tastefully Germanic without going into kitsch. Nice waitstaff, and the people we saw eating around us seemed to be regular diners there. One got a "See you next week" from the waiter as the diner left. Old Bavaria House might not be great enough to warrant a drive through the truck-route construction zone that is New West, but it's good enough to keep its core customers coming back.
I Finally Found a Good German Restaurant In Canada. Wow, very impressed. Perfect spaetzle, just like mine! Thick breaded schnitzel, tasty red cabbage, and perfectly cooked, nice tasting vegetables. The rouladen was tender and spiced nicely, and the bratwurst tasted really good. This place knows how to cook German food. Complete with a decor and menu that looks like they are stuck in the 70's, which in this case is a good thing, as the prices are very reasonable. Dessert was Black Forest cake and Apfelstrudel which were devine, all desserts are made in house. Very busy place (with good reason) so make sure you reserve ahead.
If you’re not completely full after your meal, they do have some interesting desserts. The Peaches Melba is served with delicious vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and strawberry sauce
Just a few blocks down from Taqueria Playa Tropical on 6th Street is an old home that has been converted into a German restaurant specializing in schnitzel. When you walk in this restaurant for the first time, it really feels like you’re stepping into a bit of Bavaria.
Old Bavaria Haus is a German restaurant in New Westminster that specializes in Schnitzel. The restaurant is located in an old 2 storey house and has been in business for many many years. It is known to be a local favorite especially for traditional German dishes. M has a goal of going to all the German restaurants in the Lower Mainland to find the best schnitzel, so M, Scarface and I decided to start at Old Bavaria Haus since it’s the closest. The interior is quite ornate and you do get a unique dining experience as you are actually in a house. Warsteiner Beer is a German beer. It’s light, but has a bitter taste. What I disliked about it is how there is so much foam on top. More foam means less beer for me. Complementary Garlic Bread is a good change from the usual bread. It is crunchy on the outside and has enough garlic spread to make each piece aromatic. Spatzle “Jaeger Art” ($6.95) is composed of homemade German pasta with blackforest mushroom sauce. It was delicious! The pasta was
For MePlusFood’s 3rd birthday dinner, we invited a few friends to the Old Bavaria Haus in New Westminster. This was before I went on a trip to Europe, so we picked this place to sort of get a warm up of what we’re going to eat in Germany & Vienna. All of us had schnitzels on our plates, I went big and got the Combination dinner , which had schnitzel, beef rouladen, bratwurst, and spätzle; a little bit of everything German. It was a very comforting dinner for a cold winter night and I enjoyed all the components on this plate from the sauerkraut, to the schnitzel, to the spätzle. The schnitzel was perfectly deep fried to crispy, while the pork inside stayed moist. I also really liked the spätzle that was pan fried with crispy ends. The combination dinner was a good choice because of its variety, and the super delicious peppercorn sauce really brought the whole plate together. So in hindsight, was this meal authentic? Pretty close! And to be honest, even
This restaurant is located in New Westminster, the oldest city in Vancouver. Therefore it's no surprise that this place is nestled in a century old home. Simply from the outside, it has a German Village feel to it. It's basically a two storey house with t
Schnitzel is apparently not the national dish of Germany, but you wouldn’t know that from surveying the room at the Old Bavaria Haus.
Wendy and I don’t usually eat out with others. Probably because my schedule is pretty messed and it’s already tough enough to go out with Wendy! So it was a pretty night to be on a ‘triple date’ with a very good buddy and his girlfriend and another couple
