Last year we visited Sayshutshun Island for a day, and knew we had to come back. We recently camped for almost a week and had a wonderful time. The trails are great for birding. We also had a fun time renting a kayak and going around the bay. We were lucky to see sealions, raccoons, and multiple otters on the shores.
The concession food is delicious and the showers were nice and hot. The staff were also kind and helpful with questions we had and support we needed. I highly recommend camping here or visiting for a day!
Amazing views, easy hikes, soo much to do and see here on the island. Clean, fun…truly magical!
A beautiful day trip spent here walking about the entire island. It’s reported to be haunted my Kanaka Pete and throughout some areas of the island there’s a supernatural feeling. We had three separate large branches break with no wind and on a hot sunny day. Just be aware. ;) Overall it’s a lovely hike around the island with many different ocean vistas to view.
We had stay at Newcastle Island Marine park for more than a week. Great place, super for families and kids. Great trails to explore the island, nice beaches, playground, etc. One thing which needs improvement are bathrooms and showers, plus the little bistro/cafe needs most definitely attention and work... kind of missed opportunity, but overall we'll be back. Highly recommend.
This was my first time camping on an island with trees. I'm from Nunavut and we don't have any trees. The island is beautiful! I saw an eagle flying, I had to cover the little puppy so it doesn't take it for its next meal 😂. Me, coming from Nunavut, I wasn't expecting to go camping to a place with cell phone service, running water, garbage bins, outhouses, let alone a place to take shower (for loonies). This place has all of that! Lol
The Concession is a nice little place to get some food, drinks, and merch. The beer is nice Not very many options, but I didn't even think they'd have beer available. It was a nice surprise.
I had remembered to bring everything on the face of this Earth to this Island, but coffee. And the Concession had run out of coffee for a couple days, too, so I just had to drink my tea to get caffinated. 🙃
Overall, the food was good, coffee was ... I wouldn't know, view was beautiful, ferry was small and cute, weather was hot, water was cold, the experience was great. I had so much fun!
P.S. - I found a sand dollar! It was my first time seeing a sand dollar. Lol
My heart belongs to Saysutshun! It is a place of mystery, history, education, fun, relaxation, healing and growth. I spend most of my summers camping, hanging out, riding the trails and boating and kayaking and Paddleboarding and canoeing here. The food at the little restaurant is amazing and the hall is available to rent for dances and weddings and parties. What a wonderful escape 8 minutes from downtown Nanaimo!
What a gem! It’s beautiful! The cute little ferry ride that is dog friendly and the 10km perimeter trail is spectacular! A lake is also hidden on the island and camping is allowed, also trails throughout the island.
Peaceful and quiet and beautiful place to visit.
