13/30 "indie coffee passport" experience

Large coffee shop located in Mile-End aka difficult to park if you have a car. Took easily 15 minutes to find parking, no matter you want to pay or not. Otherwise the coffee was great. There was a lot of choice for eating. Unfortunately. D didn't have the chance to try it out.

D will update the review once she get a chance to pass by and lucky enough to get a parking spot.

When I visited Montreal last year, I was quite interested in visiting some independent coffee shops.  One that I came across was Caffé in Gamba, an Italian-style coffee house in the trendy Miles End area.  I thought it was interesting how “cafe” in their name was spelled with two “f”s.  When I researched into it, I learned that the extra “f” caused quite a stir a few years ago.  In fact, Caffé in Gamba had faced prosecution under Quebec’s language laws over that “f.”  In Italian, “cafe” does have two “f”s and the owner named it that way because he wanted it customers to have that Italian experience.  I couldn’t quite find much information on the outcome of the case but it looks like “caffé” is here to stay.

Decent Coffee, probably best in the area. But there definitely are better cafes in Montreal. The service was quite friendly when I went in with a friend to order our drinks. Afterwards I had some questions about the coffee and I got an aloofness from a staff member similar to what another reviewer mentioned.

They sure do have a lot of coffees from a lot of roasters (including the local St Henri). Not sure if they're spreading themselves thin (or keeping the beans too long) but it didn't seem that busy on the lovely saturday I was there so it made me question how fast the stuff gets rotated. Of course most people were probably outside drinking beer and lemonade.

This place is worth a shot. If you are looking for beans to brew at home it could be a good source.

Wonderful allongé and coffee beans!. I haven't lived here long but it seems that Gamba is overshadowed by nearby Cafe Olimpico's scene. We tried a head to head taste test and each cafe's allongés were very good but Gamba's slightly less bitter bean, less rushed service and more tranquille environment won me over. I'm sure if I was a regular at Olimpico I'd feel differently but as a newcomer it feels like the staff just don't have a lot of patience for you. Gamba's passionate and knowledgeable staff on the other hand took the time to help me pick the right beans to take home and ground it for me without attitude! They even provide a complementary coffee when you order a bag of coffee - bonus! The coffee... is incredible even from my cheap drip-maker.

Amazing!. Best espresso in Montreal... then again the coffee is also amazing, as are the allongés (my usual order), cappucinos and lattes. I love going there to read or study (they have free wi-fi) or just for a coffee with a friend.

Other great thing, if ever you get a bit hungry they serve healthy paninis or salads and a few deserts like tiramisu and canollis (I've never had any of the deserts though).
