This Portuguese restaurant in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal has become an institution since it’s opened it’s doors in 1974. They offer a variety of fish, seafood, poultry and meat all cooked on their charcoal grill. I have been there quite a few times and it’s good for all occasions. They have 2 distinct dinning area, one with linen table cloth more proper for special occasion or dates and the other one on the bar side that is more laid back.
One of the best traditional portuguese restaurants in Montréal. Noisy and chaotic sometimes, in a good way. All-male staff, casual and frequently abrupt service. Excellent simple seafood, fish, grilled meats. Very "boys club".
The food is excellent. Makes up for the so so service. The waiters can be a bit rude sometimes, but I still go cause the food is that good. It's all very traditional Portuguese food. Nothing fancy, just good homestyle dishes. I don't recommend the desserts though.
Great shrimp entre, and the grilled squid was good, but the seafood casserole was a little bland and over priced, but I will be coming back to try some of their other dishes
By chance went to this little non descript restaurant. The place was filled on a Monday night. The fish of the day was great and I don't like fish. The chicken was flavorful and smokey the fries were even good. The waiter was just fine nice even. It's a bustling place they don't get cozy with you which I appreciated. The food is great prices were reasonable. This tourist was happy to finally find a neighborhood gem in Montreal.
Chez Doval. The octopus is perfect
I'll be back for seconds. After reading a few of the previous slightly negative reviews, a single question remains: what were you expecting from this restaurant? I went around 9:30 on a Wednesday night, ordered a delicious and copious grilled chicken ($12), 1L of simple house wine ($21), and all the old-fashion-kitsch-style ambiance complete with a disgruntled waiter the resto has to offer. Rowdy patrons in the next room played on an acoustic guitar: it was everything I was hoping for and more. It is nice to be in an old fashion restaurant that makes you feel lucky to be eating in it (rather than the other way around). If you are looking for a modern turnkey dining experience, maybe this is not the place for you nor your palate. However, if you desire good Portuguese food dispensed in a pleasantly traditional manner, you will be right at home.
Amazing. It is loud and cramped and it is so worth it. Absolutley love the grilled sardines and the pork with clams.
Thé crusty waiter was attacked by an angry chicken. But the food excellent.
Good food and even the crusty waiter will eventually grow on you. Part of the "charm" of the place (for some people).
Fresh, simple, noisy. Very authentic but incredibly noisy at lunch time. The second room seems to be favored by the Portuguese-speaking workers--that's where you want to sit if you want the full experience. Fresh and simple cuisine, nothing fancy.
I wouldn't go there for dinner, though.
12.5$ for a lunch with tradional portugese food, with méat or fisc. A bargain.
As Chez Doval is a Portuguese restaurant, the menu was pretty straight forward and simple: GRILLED. EVERYTHING.
